- 50 tons takeoff weight, and 900 feet (300 meters) takeoff and landing distance on the water at loaded weight. It is almost incredible, but you can see on my video compilation several times.
The ShinMaywa US-2 amphibian has a unique boundary layer control system, which uses compressed air from the slit of the flaps to prevent air flow separation and increase lift. This ground effect flight and the special design of his boat body allows the amphibian to land in high sea waves that would inaccessible for other seaplanes.

In all of the time I have spent taxing a C-130 (same engines btw) I have never heard this music on the ramp. I really must say the US-2 is a remarkable and beautiful aircraft. Wish I had a chance to fly one back in the day.

It also has a separate engine(same engine in the superlynx)for boundary layer control. I read the aircraft can cruise at speeds as low as 40kmh 😂.. Hughes would be proud.... spruce goose anyone?
Just found out that it was design in 1953 and proto type completed in 1957. Full production in 1976 after various vigirous test of aeroplane production. Amazing Japan is capable to design and built it 55 years ago of highiest capablity of amphibous aeroplane that still worth till today. Upgrading it avionic system is nessary as all the analog are obselete as time pass by to digital era
This is US2.US1 is the older version.
This has a lot of looks of previous amphibians but has many added features especially the lift feature.
I can only imagine the absolute JOY that US-2 pilots and crew feel in this amazing bird.
My favorite amphibian! Amazing take off and landing performance. There is even a three sketch of a proposed 100-seat passenger version. That would have been something to see on the ramp parked amongst ATR’s, Dash-8’s, regional jets and 737’s!
The performance is because of "blown wing" tech. They get a CL of 7.7, which compares to a Cessna 172 at 2 and Boeing/airbus as 3.2. It has a turbine and a blower in the tail that blows air into the flaps and turns the flow down with the flaps and keeps the flow attached. This is why is can take off in 900 feet...

I love it. In my opinion the best actual seaplane in the world. Great range, unbelieveable STOL abilities and truely amphibius. I think if they do better marketing, they could sell it much more worldwide. And if they could sell more it will also get cheaper (because it is awfully expensive)

If you trace the heritage of the flying boat actually starts with the H8K Emily flying boat. Post War the manufacturer decided to evolve it by taking engines from American Military hardware US-1 which was taking H8K Emily flying boat airframe with pave low GE T407s and then this one US-2 which is your H8K Emily flying boat airframe with AE2100s from C-130J

When it does a water takeoff, they leave a heck of a water spray trail after getting airborne. It seems to last for miles.

Just like a Short Sunderland on take off -first aircraft I ever flew in and it was in its day a huge aircraft -you could pack over 80 people into it and still take off and land in the sea river or lake -even land in a resevoir .
Correct and in reality the US-2 is your WW II H8K Emily airframe modified to use C-130J engines US-1 was H8K airframe with Pave Low engines. Basically, for post-war Japanese flying boats, they take H8K airframe and put US military engines on them. For 2023-2024 modernized Sunderland it needs A400M engines that way Western Europe along with Japan have answers to Moscow and Beijing's duopoly on Flying Boats.

They are Rolls Royce turboprops, 4,600 shaft horsepower each; same engines and propellers that the C-130J is equipped with. The US-2 is probably the "most capable" amphibian seaplane ever developed. It's stall speed is incredibly slow for such a huge airplane; less than 55 knots.

The ShinMaywa US-2, like the US-1, bears a strong resemblance to the cold war era, U.S. Navy, Martin P5M-2 "Marlin."
This aircraft is based on the Kawanishi H8K of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
