    This is the final part.
The US-2 descends into the sea again, moves on the water, and keeps on starting and leaving.
US-2, which flew away and disappeared from view, seemed to have made several turns over Futami Bay.
Thank you for watching so many.

Hi, a lot of people are commenting on the short take off. This is because US-2 is more unique than you even dreamed. It's a five engine active lift-augmented aircraft. 4 engines for propulsion, 4500 hp each, and one for active lift augmentation (also called Boundary Layer Control), 1300 hp. You can hear the lift-augmentation engine whining in the video, and you can see its intake/exhaust in the bulge at the wing root. This fifth engine runs a centrifugal fan (think 1300 hp leaf blower) to supply high pressure air to the flaps and also to the tail control surfaces of the aircraft. By blowing very high velocity air off these surfaces the coefficient of lift is doubled - US-1 achieves lift coefficient of 7. It can generate over twice the lift per unit wing surface of comparable size aircraft. Very high lift also keeps the wing small so the high speed performance is exceptional (for an amphibian, that is). Thanks to the low minimum flight speed, radically short take-off and very fast climb, the US-1 can operate in deep wave troughs of high seas. To my knowledge it's the only aircraft in the world operating today with such a system. I can imagine it must be horrifically expensive to build!

I can't speak a foreign language, so I read it with a Google translation. This reply also uses Google's translation.
As a Japanese, I was very happy and honored to have overseas people praise me for the best performance in the world.
In fact, many countries around the world are paying attention to this flying boat, but it seems that it is difficult to find a buyer because it is expensive.
The unit cost is about $ 96 million.
However, it is said that it is making a low-priced version for India.

@@palfab962ify Yes, wild stuff indeed. I've studied just about every strange device or system ever installed on aircraft and the lift augmentation system of the US-2 is probably my all time favorite. It's complex but the sheer efficiency and effectiveness of the system is breathtaking. By efficiency I mean that the augmentation system is actually very low power compared to the 4 turboprops (4x4000 hp compared to 1x1300 hp) while having an effect on the lift that is disproportionate to the power invested.

Don’t quote me but I think they call that “augmented” lift boundary layer control.

    • @12345fowler
      @12345fowler ปีที่แล้ว +2

How can it generate twice the lift per surface compared to other airplane ? The lift increase is mainly due to accelerated air (more airspeed = more lift) coming from airplane engine (dedicated or not, see F-104 for instance). But the actual wing itself sure cannot generate twice the lift under the same conditions. That's not how it works.

Shinmeiwa’s predecessor was Kawanishi. Kawanishi built the H8K flying boat, which had 50% more range then the current US-2. Its speed was also very good, being only 50 mph slower than the most modern example. Keep in mind that the H8K first flew in 1941, almost 80 years ago!

From an elderly N3N-3, Cessna 180 on floats, Beechcraft B-18 on floats, Beaver, Turbo Beaver, Otter, Twin Otter, Grumman Goose, Grumman Albatross to the ponderous Martin Mars. None got up on the step and then airborne as quickly as this beautiful aircraft.

Probably most places have gone to helicopters. This one though can go long distances to rescue, can load a lot more people, probably use less fuel, doesn't need a runway to land. Considering Japan has a lot of small islands far out and too rocky for a strip or even a pad these make sense. Also considering they have a huge fishing fleet that goes out hundreds of miles they would work better than helicopters for rescue.

My father in law flew Catalina flying boats during WWII for the Australian airforce (stripped of all armour to give them maximum range). On a bad day, loaded with mines and fuel, it could sometimes take miles to get unstuck from the water. He told me he bent a few planes during take offs and especially landings in rough water.

I learned a lot from this video. My experience is with single engine seaplanes. The floats always leak due to the pounding they get in high speed taxi, takeoff, and landing; so the first thing you have to do is pump out the compartments. I think I see that this craft has a double hull, the outer bottom to take the impact of the water and the inner hull for reliable flotation. I think I see the double bottom can retain the water for dropping on fires, or drain immediately for short takeoff. Thanks and I wish I could kick the tires on this beauty!

Japan is one of the few countries in the world, to have mastered amphibious aircraft. If you look closely at belly of the Aircraft in the middle there is a movable ski section to help break the suction that occurs during water take offs, that very few amphibious aircraft have. It save a lot of energy on take off this way. The US-2 also serve with the Indian Navy who has 12 for delivery started in 2016 from ShinMaywa Industries, Ltd and has recently been completed.

Must be using compressed air venting to help unstick the hull for such a short take off. I like the way the landing gear tucks back and up against the fuselage pretty cool. I'm kind of surprised the floats didn't tuck in or up somewhere on the aircraft.

    • @azspotfree

Based on all the water bleeding off it after takeoff, I'm thinking water jets built into the hull

    • @crabsodyinblue

it's the edge halfway down the bottom that helps do that.

    • @FeralRabbit
      @FeralRabbit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

As crabs said the notch on the bottom of the hull is called the step and it is what allows the aircraft to unstick easily.
Folding floats are a trade off. Is the drag reduction of them greater in benefit I.e. increased range versus the greater weight of a folding mechanism.
Not to mention an extra point of failure for an aircraft operating in the harshest of environments.
      Beautiful aircraft.

When I was a kid my grandma's house was on a hill overlooking San Diego Bay (this was in the early 1950s). The Navy had some PBM Mariners stationed at North Island and they would take off from the bay, fly out over the channel and out to sea. It was fascinating to see such a large and ungainly-looking aircraft pull itself out of the water and into the air. It seemed like they would never get airborne - what a contrast with this new seaplane! Actually, the successor to the PBM, the P5M, bears a striking resemblance to the US2, except that it had only 2 piston engines instead of 4 (or 5) turboprops.

I am using Google translation software. There may be some parts that are not translated correctly. I'm sorry if there was any rude expression.
      I am Japanese.
I have lived in Chichijima in the Ogasawara Islands for 30 years and have been working as a video cameraman for about 22 years.
I look forward to working with you. (^^) /

Mr. Keroza Emon , I´m Brazilian and i also use google to translate . I only speak Portuguese and understand Spanish and Italian . I´m old now , I´m already 77 years . Worked as a tecnical assistant in the operation of hydroelectric Plants. I am a great admirer of the Japanese people and I know that you are hardworking , educated and with a very high cultural level . We owe a lot to the Nipônico People for their contribution to the
development of Brazil , in agriculture and tecnologies , since the 1910s . The Japanese colony here in Brazil is
immense . Conratulations and thank you .

When I first saw the seaplane, I thought it was a C-130. Then I noticed that it had a Tee tail. It is a magnificent machine.
