    I got the WORST instructions from an Amazon light fixture and this was so simple and straight to the point I cannot thank you enough. My fixture set-up is pretty much identical to this, so this was a lifesaver.
    I am two years into owning my first home and trying to learn as much as I can to save money while still being safe. I really appreciate videos like this that help and teach at the same time.

  • @falltumbler

    I liked right after the tip about using the ground wire to prevent the fixture from falling accidentally. That alone was worth watching the entire video; which didn’t disappoint. Thanks for the simple, uncluttered instructions!

    • @HB-wd8gp
      @HB-wd8gp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes. However, not all ground wires are strong enough to hold up the fixture. In one case, a light fixture I was installing came with a metal cable wire to attach to it and hold it up during installation. I attached it and the ground wire and stepped down get something. A few seconds later the light fixture came crashing down. End of my fixture installation project for the day! The heavier ones need to people or some other way of support the fixture near the ceiling.

    I am in the trades and was asked to vet TH-cam videos and provide a recommendation to a friend who wants to do this himself. This is pretty good. But for those of you who are totally and absolutely new to this, when you go to the store to buy “mirettes” or whatever he called them, just look for wire nuts. If you purchased a new fixture they’re likely included and you’re old ones may be fine.
    I’m a general contractor with 25 years experience and I’ve never heard that word. I’ve changed a few hundred fixtures and work with professional electricians all the time. In America, they’re just wire nuts.

      Maybe you can provide a tutorial for installing a ‘WALL light fixture’ ??? I have zero existing ‘wall light fixtures’ and really want a specific fixture but it is for wall placement only. I would love to know how to install this myself but I don’t have any idea how to do this…

    • @mechanicalman1068
      @mechanicalman1068 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nlm8487 if you’re replacing an existing wall fixture, it’s more or less the same as a ceiling fixture. If you want a wall fixture where there isn’t one already you’re really outside the realm of beginner DIYer and need a professional.

  • @jckrell

    Very good and easy to follow instructions, however there is one problem. You say to hook the ground wire coming from the light fixture to the green screw to hold it and keep it from falling. Still there are 3 wires coming from the ceiling - a black one, a white one, and a copper one. In the video, after you connect the ground wire coming from the light ixture to the green screw, the copper wire hanging from the ceiling mysteriously disappears (1:30 mark). What did you do with the 3rd wire (copper color) coming from the ceiling? I guess this would be another ground wire. Should you connect it to the ground wire coming from the light fixture? They both connect to the green screw? Just wondering where it went and what you did with it.

    • @BornAJarhead
      @BornAJarhead 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      They did this wrong so the correct way would have been to wrap the ground halfway through to leave a small pigtail, than wire nut (US) or as they say in Canada Murrett. The incoming ground with the pigtail to completely ground the light. You do not need to tape it with electrical tape, it makes it harder for the next electrician coming through. That’s what homeowners do.

      My question also!

    • @gardagod
      @gardagod 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the same question, plus there is a red coated wire coming from my electrical box (for the switch) which I believe goes in the marrette with the grounded wire. However, I have noticed that any comment on here that asks a question or asks for elaboration doesn't get liked or responded to. Not so helpful.

    • @DanSisken
      @DanSisken 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BornAJarhead I think this answers my question re the ground wiring. Just to confirm my understanding, you wrap the copper wire from the new fixture around the screw of the crosspiece (is circular here) you attach and tighten, leaving some wire to then attach to the ground wire (red I think) coming out of the ceiling. In other words, you attach the copper wire to two things. Thanks!

    Amazing video! Best I've seen so far (one small note though, would be useful to explain why frayed copper wire should lead first (slightly ahead of solid copper wire) when entering the plastic screw on wing-caps, this allows the frayed to clamp onto the solid copper wire. Because of you lead with the solid one first sometimes the screw wing caps will clamp down on only the solid part and the frayed part basically slips out causing arcing or low electrical connection issues. Although you did mention the electrical tape around the cap which would prevent a fire hazard

    I was a bare copper wire sticking out of the box along with the black and white but I did not see what you did with it. Was it pushed back on like that or was it attached to anything? I'm not asking about the stranded copper, I already saw that was attached to the mounting plate.

    Thank you for making this seem so easy!
    Is this a standard way of putting up a light fixture? My husband said we need to call an electrician to do it for us.

      A lot of people put lights in themselves, however if done incorrectly and the fire inspector determines that the source is a faulty installation, it can void your insurance. To be really honest, you have to be pretty dumb for it to happen, so if people are that dumb, then yes hire an electrician. Generally if you don't properly insulate the two connected wires, you would open yourself up to accidents.

    Hi there, I just bought a beautiful antique Ceiling Lamp for the closet. It came from a 30 year old house
    where it was installed. Both wires are covered in a cord like material. The cords are both white, but one has
    a ring ribbon printed on it. The gentleman said it doesn't matter which wires are hooked up
    to the black and white wires on the ceiling.
    Is this true for antique lights, or should I treat the Red Ribbon side as the hot?
    BIG THANKS!

    I am going to do this, this week. Should I leave the ground wire connected to the screw and push it with the black and white cables inside the box? or I remove the screw before pushing everything inside the box?
