Black Mountain Side is another "Borrow". It's from a Irish folk tune called Black Water Side. The tuning, I think is in DADGAD which produces a drone sound on the lower strings and was ver popular in the sixties and seventies. And I don't know if the Dhul is the same as a Tabla but it's a Tabla being played here... All very Beatles lead with their Indian influences... Loving the reaction. Keep on Rocking

Led Zeppelin at its heart, is and always was a Blues Band. Of all the great music they produced, I still think the first two Albums were the best, most raw and gritty music of all.

Black Mountainside I think of as kind of a “palate cleanser” between two harder songs. A breather if you will, before the totally manic Communication Breakdown.

I’m surprised no one has pointed out that Black Mountainside is an uncredited cover of Black Waterside by Bert Jansch, which may be Jansch’s arrangement of a traditional song. Lots of rivalry going on there.

Taught to Page by Al Stewart, who learned it sitting "at Bert Jansch's feet" as Stewart put it. He was called to testify in the court case. He feigned ignorance. Page played on a couple of Stewart's early albums.

That's a great reaction, and you notice so much stuff. But I always have to call out stuff that I felt was important but that didn't get mentioned. In both of those songs, the bass line is so important. And something that happens in, your time is going to come, that you didn't really mention is it's not just all the other stuff, it's the fact that it switches from solo Robert Plant to this huge Unison thing. That Unison singing in a group just transforms everything. It's like there's a guy by himself who's a bit plaintiff, and then this whole core is comes in supporting him going yeah man, you going to pay for this even though you don't even realize it yet. There's a power in that textural change that simply must be addressed. And yeah I think you're right about Black Mountain thing, it's a beautiful piece of instrumental music for the functions as a musical interlude on that side of the album, which is the way everybody was listening to those things back then, it was brand new to move from only singles on the radio for singles on the jukebox or singles at the record store to having entire albums with the sequence of the songs and what leads and what ends aside on both sides and then the overall Arc of the entire album over both sides really matters. It's something that we don't feel today at all because everything is just isolated songs on Spotify. Nobody has any clue where it is in the band's Evolution, or what album is on, or is it part of a larger story arc, it's mostly been lost unfortunately.

Great reaction, and it's heartwarming to see a younger person such as yourself discovering and appreciating the music that us oldies grew up with.
Can l suggest a brief fork in the road, that I think you'll enjoy exploring? Black Waterside is an old folk song that Anne Briggs popularised in the early 70's. Her version of the song is stunning, as she has the voice of an angel. It was then reworked by legendary guitarist and folk singer, Bert Jansch. It's his guitar phrasing that you'll recognise in the Led Zep instrumental. I think it might interesting for you to hear how the song evolved in the hands of the aforementioned artists.

You were right on track when you said listening to the whole album or at least that whole side of that album would have given you a different effect. One reason is that some of these songs spill-over seamlessly into the next song.If you notice "Your Time is Gonna Come"spills over into "Black Mountain Side" then I believe that spills over into "Communication Breakdown",or very nearly so.Incredible album when you think about the time period it came out in,and compare it to other songs of that era,way ahead of it's time.

I don't hear a wedding sound specifically, more like a call to Mass in general. This song was written by Jimmy after a breakup - naturally. It's cool that they all harmonize on it. In addition to the guitars, Jimmy plays a pedal steel guitar. He said he hadn't played one before, and the one he saw was out of tune, but he said he was able to put something together to add to this song. Black Mountain Side is an instrumental in the vein as Bert Jansch. Jimmy used the alternate tuning of D-A-D-G-A-D to help enhance the sitar-like sound and had a tabla played by a session musician. In concert, he would combine this with another instrumental called White Summer that he used to play with The Yardbirds. There's a great, 12-minute performance of it from Royal Albert Hall in 1970. Black Mountain Side didn't stay in the lineup for long, but it would get brought back to their set in the later 70s and would segue immediately into Kashmir.

It was based on a Bert Jansch song, Black Water Side but this was not an instrumental it had lyrics a very folky song but with that very distinctive picking guitar style from Bert that influenced so many excellent arstists such as Jimmy Page, Paul Simon, Nick Drake, Leo Kottke and Donovan (who also taught the style to George Harrison when they were in India).

You nail it when you reference the way they mixed their music! As great a guitarist as Jimmy Page is, he's an even better producer. It's one of the main things that set him above and apart from the competition. Compare the sound quality of the first Led Zeppelin album and Jeff Beck's "Truth" album from around the same time. They're both on similar territory, but the Led Zeppelin album just sounds infinitely better, musical talent aside.

This reaction was…”criminal,” and I’ll tell you why. (It’s not your fault; you don’t know the Zep like we do. I’m 66.)
You can’t end “Your Time Is Gonna Come,” with “Black Mountain Side.” When WE hear the instrumental “Black Mountain Side” finish…WE already hear the intro to “Communication Breakdown.” Do you know what I mean? It’s EXPECTED!!!
The only other Zeppelin songs that pretty much DEMAND that they be played together are, “Heartbreaker” followed by, “Livin’ Lovin’ Maid.” After “Heartbreaker” ends, the next thing OUR brains expect to hear is…”With a purple umbrella and a…”Phipps” in hand…” (the actual wording is: “With a purple umbrella and a fifty cent hat,” but, somehow “fifty cent hat” isn’t what we hear. Check it out and tell me what you hear.) Love your work. It’s the most “intellectual” reaction channel I’ve heard!!! P.S. The Who is another Rabbit Hole that deserves your attention. They’re every bit as sophisticated as The Zep.

A Wedding? I never thought of it like that because the lyrics are about an unfaithful woman so I doubt the marriage will work out.
He literally says he’s going to leave her behind. It’s a good song that I take as a warning to someone who’s unfaithful.
Ie, your going to get what you deserve.
Then the instrumental is a version of Bert Janschs song which is a traditional song.
It sounds like a Hippie tune with the Tabla.
What it really does is setup the contrast to Communication Breakdown which explodes right after, like a bomb going off! CB sounds like Proto Punk! An incredible track full of bombast!

@@SyedRewinds Syed, I know you have a life (😉) but you might be well served in digging into a bit of history of Zeppelin. Jimmy Page brought some of those songs with him from The Yardbirds. The rest, he had the arrangements already in his head. He basically got the musicians he thought could pull it off, showed them what he wanted to do, booked the studio and paid for it out of his own pocket….and this was the result. He picked very wisely.
He also produced it, as you no doubt know by now. Peter Grant (whom Jimmy had worked with in The Yardbirds) and Jimmy then took the finished product and shopped it to record labels and got the best deal imaginable with Atlantic Records
But back to the main point: they needed such a short amount of studio time on this album because the songs were already in Jimmy’s head and he got incredibly talented people who could come together and within a couple of months meld into a tight unit and play at this level.
      Here’s a quote from Wikipedia
“Recording. Page said that the album took only about 36 hours of studio time (over a span of a few weeks) to create (including mixing), adding that he knew this because of the amount charged on the studio bill.”
