Josh did a great job :) Couple of ideas: You REALLY should have put the resin in a vacuum chamber to get the bubbles out before pouring. Also just pour a bit in the bottom of the deep pockets and hit it with heat, then add more on top so you aren't trying to get the bubbles out of the bottom by heating the top. A random orbit sander with no sandpaper makes a great vibration device. So does a bass guitar!!
I'm not impressed with your epoxy expert, the first thing you learn is NOT to mix bubbles into the mix. The second thing you learn is how to pour it without making a massive mess! Put it in a 20ml syringe, or scoop it into the molds with a teaspoon etc.
Pro tip: put the epoxy into a Ziploc bag and snip off one corner, then pipe out the mixture as if were cake icing. It's fast, efficient and doesn't make as much of a mess.

I have been building custom fishing rods for the last 4 years and have become very familiar with specially made for rods , clear, two part 1:1 epoxy. We use it to coat the multicolor thread wraps near the guides etc. The rod is put in a rotisserie (9 rpm) to keep the epoxy leveled while it hardens and bubbles are a rod wrapper's nightmare. So , some things I do to help lessen the problem is first, I use a candle or room scent heater to warm the epoxy. You can purchase these at places like Walmart household section. They warm the candles and give off a pleasant scent . My wife bought two of them for the house but can't seem to find them. Just set your bottle of epoxy on it 15-20 min before you need it. Second, very important, mix very slowly to avoid entrapping air. Don't dip the mixing stick in and lap or fold the epoxy over itself, just keep the stick in there and stir slowly. Some rod builders put a few drops of acetone in mix to lower the viscosity. This evaporates quickly and doesn't seem to degrade the finish. Then I heat the epoxy with an alcohol lamp as the rod turns and this usually removes most bubbles like in your video. Then , under a magnification, I use a 25 gauge needle to pop any stubborn bubbles. I hope you can use some of these tips to help win the battle against the dreaded bubble, Ted
Oh, and easy composites is an excellent site. You can get any of their products at trade prices, even for small quantities. I got some of the infusion grade epoxy that is used for carbon fiber production from them. It's lovely stuff, water thin.
So i've seen that on some of your guitars, you'd make a backplate that connects on the side of the guitar and makes it look more connected to the instrument. I'd like to see a video on how to do this effectively. I've messed up on one of my guitars control cavities on the side and I'd like to do something similar to fix it. Thank you for all the info you provide, it's really helped me along the way immensely.

You should find a split blank of wood and create a river almost going through the body, similar to the copper leaf rod guitar but entirely filled with resin.

Hehe, I put the same sprakly flakes in my fretboard that I engraved :D I just added purple stunning stains and those flakes and boy did it turn out cool! As for when mixing the resin, it's good to mix it so that the "mixing utensil" doesn't really lift away too much, because everytime you pull the utensil out and put it back in the mixture you create more bubbles as air gets trapped. -T
Hi Ben loved the video just a thought you our Josh should try Glass Cast from Easy Composites. I have used it and it is class it comes out real clear and is also gr8 with colour pigments. I don't make guitars just do woodworking and love your videos keep up the gr8 work.
I put my resin in a plastic cup and leave it in a bowl with hot water. The resin mixes better and it becomes more liquid. Easier to apply and you have a longer working time
Given that guitars are mostly made of glue, I think we're well over a discussion on tone glue. Says the man who makes neck shims out of very thin veneer in contrasting colours assembled into plywood with hide glue mostly as it's an easy way to check the wedge isn't too warped. Hide glue veneer ply has a much nicer tap tone than alcolin aliphatic resin..
So sometimes you vibrate the medium or hit it with a heat gun to get the bubbles out. Would it work to vibrate the pouring container right before the pour to work the bubbles out?
Ben please may i buy that guitar when its finished please please please... Its gorgeous... ... Have you had any thoughts about installing some leds behind the resin pockets... To shine through them, and it woruld make the glitter sparkle when lit up too... .. May be blue or white leds!! Let me know what you think ... Thanks, Rick 😃
Rather than glitter you should've worked out a way to insert some led 's into the bottom of the dimonds so when plugged in it lights up like a Christmas tree.
Im not sure why yiu had so many bubbles & the opeque color? When I did mine after mixing for 5min very slowly not lifting my mixing stick the resin was crystal clear and I had very few bubbles. It may have too do with the glitter you added I hope it dries clear, Also Ben use an old credit card to scrape off the excess it works great.
Very quick tip from down under hit the whole thing with the heat gun after application boom all the bubbles go to the surface have fun.( ps make sure you don’t sniff the shit and wear your bloody gloves apoxy is toxic shite.) keep up the good work 🙂
First timer here and can't justify buying both off the bat. By all mean you want to send me the cash then I'll buy both but for now I'm sticking to a budget. My concern is with tear out with the planer. I'm leaning more towards the planer just worried about taking chunks out of my nice slab of mahogany Iv just bought.
Both are really just about how fast you can do a task. You can do either task manually, so really it's just a question how often you would use the machine. I've been building things for 25 years and don't own a drum sander, but tend to do almost exclusively straight-line construction (not building guitars...yet). If buying a thickness planer pay VERY close attention to the reviews on how much snipe the thickness planer will create - buy the one with the least snipe. You'll kick yourself for buying the cheaper one later - learn from my mistake!! :)
I was talking about those horrendous skirtlights that were in fashion at one point. Anyway, don't take it too serious. If you like LED's on guitar, that can be ok, but it would ruin such a nice grain, imo. LED's are best used for fret dots and simple finishes.

a vacuum chamber is the best way to get those bubbles out...but on the fly, anywhere, a hot water bath for the mixture goes a long way
You can also add stuff to resin so it glows.

It needs color changing LED lights behind the diamonds to reflect off the glitter. That should keep Ben busy for a while.
I've seen people use the sole plate of a jig saw to vibrate things before, maybe that would work in this instance?

Oh, heat. That makes sence. Easier than vacuum chamber.
Unless you have one available it wouldn't be very cost efficient for one-off's or prototypes.

to be 100% honest, he still could! LED's would be best installed from the back after the resin has set, otherwise you'd get leaks.
