My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

I've had one of these Magnum BR 800x blowers come to my shop last year, and the same issue, only worse. The owner's crew put straight gas in the tank and 2 days later, Wham ! I told the owner that I already knew what I would find if I opened up the engine and it would cost more in labor to do so.
However, he said go ahead and make sure that it's as bad as you think. 😆
$150 in labor later and the cylinder, valves, piston were all toast. The crankshaft and bearings survived some how. Needless to say, it's sitting in a box for over a year now and the customer has not paid for the inspection labor. He said he paid over $900.00 for the unit. All I can say is, if you don't follow the instructions for your equipment, it will cost you big bucks later.

On STIHL 4-stroke mix lubricated engines, when there is a lack of lubrication, typically the piston pin bushing will heat up and seize before the piston and cylinder score. I have purposely run many STIHL 4-stroke mix lubricated engines with no lubrication in tests and they rarely score a piston and cylinder. Almost always the wrist pin seizes first. This engine uses a bushing pressed into the con rod for the piston pin (STIHL R&D found that needle bearings cannot withstand the combustion pressures of the 4-stroke engine). At minimum you are going to need a new crankshaft and piston. It may be more cost effective to replace the shortblock. The unmixed fuel was likely the cause for the failure.

That's what I've seen too, but also on a 91r seen a connecting rod bearing fly apart and eat itself.
I repair all kinds of engines though.
      I put a 110 engine in that 91.
Always wondered if you could put the older engines in the newer plastics. You can 🙂
      So there's that too

Sometimes you have employees that don't pay attention and put regular gas in. Couple weeks ago I was in the shop and one blower had a hole in piston, two didn't sound any good.
And last one I looked at looked like straight gas. Changed it checked compression, aah ok. Got to start popping off but ran out of time. May need new plug mechanic thought.
Train your employees to make sure they are putting in the right gas. Not just the can but when they pour it in.

Actually found this to be a highly engaging video.... Definitely one of your better productions, and it Wasn't wasted on a unit you couldn't make (immediately) run. That Echo looks like a hefty machine.... Hopefully just a wrist pin and piston and you can make part II. (depending on the price, if it were mine, i might just leave that piston, bore the rod bearing hole and just go with a new pin and rings. 💁) ✌️ ~

Heat the piston with a propane torch and apply oil to the pin. Try to drive the pin out while it's hot.
I'd really like to see what happened to the rod bearing.
Rod bearings hardly ever lock up like that when the rest of the engine is OK.
    Very good video!

Stihl's 4 mox blowers do not use bearings for the wrist pins. Which why when the motors fail the wrist pin always locks up.

    Great video Bre.
It shows the real world of what small engine techs go through daily.
Customers still think a screw driver, crescent wrench, and hammer is all that is needed to work on this type of equipment. Oh and they must also think we have no bills to pay because they don't want to pay you for your services if the equipment isn't repairable or cost effective to do so.

I was looking for a lightweight blower for my deck. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxgioZQl3J5wPGAeDINzbieKbT5qomSEx3 There are some huge trees around my house and the leaves and pods drop all over my deck. Having to move furniture around to sweep has become too big a chore. This blower was the answer. It is light enough for this 70yr old lady and powerful enough to blow all the tree droppings off my rather large deck. Thank you B&D. Be aware the cord is not included. I use a 3 prong outdoor cord 25' cord for my 12' x 20' deck. The cord retainer works very well, but don't try to pass the plug through it. That is NOT how it works. You just have to loop the cord and it works great. One of my best purchases. Very happy.

Great video Bre!! The BR 6,7,800's engine design gets really expensive once you get past regular maintanence. Bearings are unserviceable and a reseal (replace crankshaft seals and gasket maker for the pan) requires a good bit of labor. Removing the blower fan can be a bear also. Simplicity of the true two stroke blowers is much better for the long run. Ease of service, and rebuilds. I work on this stuff all day and I own a PB9010. Short block replacement for these 4-Mix units are only a viable repair if it's under warranty.

    • @leehuff2330
      @leehuff2330 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have a 4-mix FS131, and I can't get used to that congested SOUND they make compared to a true 2-cycle.
It starts right up and cuts great, but that sound makes me want to order the aftermarket parts and overhaul my 20 year old FS-85. The bottom end is fine (no excess play or noise in the bearings), but the cylinder and rings are worn so she's not compressing adequately. She's sitting in my toolshed for now until I get some time to work on her.

After the epic ice storm in'98, I went to my friendly Husqvarna/Jonsereds dealer for some parts. There was a rack of chain saws in the shop, all looking brand new. The mechanic told me that everybody and their brother went out and bought saws to clear all the damaged trees. Every one of the saws was run on straight gas and seized up. No one read the owners' manuals. No warranty, just spare parts.

Yea … I got one from a guy same blower … his mixture was terrible and he locked it up so he just bought another one and I gave him 100 cash and told him I would use it for parts … took my time with it one day and poured some marvel mystery oil down the spark plug hole let it sit a day … came back and fired that bad boy up worked great … sold it for 450 got good profit and also let the person know that bought it that it was locked up but I fixed it by freeing up the old piston so time may be limited … 2 years later it still works for him and he brings it to me for maintenance and I give it some hot oil (mystery oil) treatment once or twice a year for him … still picking the 9010 over any other blower tho just so powerful and saves a ton of time when you are a good operator

The best part about the Echo 8010 ( and 9010) is that Echo knows they built a blower that's longevity is compromised. Lucky to get a year from one when used commercially. 9010 not much better. But they are standing behind them with respect to warranty ( even months after the 2 years).

Similar to when you get your car fuelled up and your household has a mix of petrol and diesel cars. I always pause, say to myself “ now what car am I in, what fuel am I about to put in”😂. It takes me two seconds to blow my small driveway off, I drain the non ethanol mix, and I run it until it turns off. Blame Chickanic! She got me loving this thing. Can't believe I spent so much money because I wanted to be part of the crowd!😂 I love this blower so much that I'm installing anti-scratch pads to her. Well it only ran for 2 years until he had to start using jumper cables straight to the starter, until he locked it up. Can’t tell him nothing. “ it doesn’t use oil, I just add it to the diesel” it ran like shit before it locked up. Well now he just bought a brand new kobota tractor. I wonder how long it will last .

transmission fluid works great. used it to free up small engine or large engine. its viscosity lets it creep into tighter spaces better i put it in till it covers the top of the piston let it sit overnight. make sure if it does turn over to leave plug out to avoid hydrolock but ive saved many engines, on quads, dirt bikes, mower even cars with that. not a sure thing but worth a try.

Stuck wrist pins are ZERO fun. Had a Honda 450 Foreman recently with this condition. Ended up using a ball joint press to get that pin out, and a lot of heat from a MAP gas torch. The heat is the key. Heated the piston and sprayed the inside of the pin with canned air like you blow your keyboard out with. That combination had it moving in just a couple of minutes and it had a happy ending, I got everything back together and it runs great!

Glad to have you back. First “failure” I’ve seen on your channel. Too bad. But it’s helpful to learn when it’s not worth the time to repair.

For squirting oil in the cylinder or fuel in a carb I use the syringe for giving pediatric oral meds. Nice and neat.

I worked on a BR 800 for the same reason as of running on straight gas. These are really a pain to take apart, really. Frustration! Besides that, the parts are insanely expensive. I changed the cylinder and piston with aftermarket parts and after around 10 hours it still running fine with very good performance. Aftermarket parts are about 1/3 of Stihl price... Frustration again! Stihl does not want us to fix their (our) machines They want us to buy a new one In order to keep the factory busy.
Many thanks for your very instructive video, helpful. Have a great week.

Great video and.... excellent taste in slippers!!! I'm pausing the video to see if I'm guessing correctly here. Since you took the cover off and started trying to turn it and it made that squeak, I have been saying to myself.. It's the wrist pin failure. I have repaired probably a dozen of those in the BR600 and one BR800 in the last 8 months. It was a warranty repair by Stihl as they know is was a design flaw. Now, to continue the video and see if I'm right.
EDIT: I was correct. What you are seeing is exactly what I was seeing with the wrist pin failures. I also just realized this video was posted a year ago so it's too late now to do anything about it but that would possibly have been a short block engine replacement under warranty by Stihl. Well, now you know. I know it had straight fuel in it when you dumped it out but the damage is exactly what I would see with the wrist pin failure so I'm sure that would have been covered.

I was a Husqvarna dealer for 8 1/2 years. A customer brought in a 61CC saw and said it stopped running. It had no oil in the gas. I filled the cylinder with Marvel Mystery oil and let it soak for a week. I flushed the cylinder with a fresh gas-oil mix. Installed the plug, filled the tank and it started right away, although it did smoke at first. It quickly settled down and I never heard from the guy again.

Have you tried our good old friend heat? Be sure to heat the piston and con rod (awkward) not the wrist pin then press it out before the wrist pin expands. Probably gonna need a new piston tho'

Awesome video!! Well the 800 might not have worked out. But you definitely help me out with the 9010. I have the tools but there was no information out there on how to adjust the carburetor. The Ecco dealer adjusted it but its still just a hair off depending on the temperature. So Thank You very much!!👍🏻👍🏻🤗🤗

great video Bri ,my guess is the customer will choose to fix it, and I love Echo equipment, i have my SRM-21 Dual string trimmer and still works good starts on the 3rd pull which is awesome considering its 21 yrs old, I live in Manitoba Canada and have a neighbour who never shovels snow he uses a big Stihl backpack blower, i don't know what model ,he has it fired up any time it snows and always has his place cleaned right down to the concrete and thats everything and you can hear him all winter and his vehicles almost never have snow on them either , so i guess Stihl makes a pretty stout blower , i look forward to the video on this unit 👍

Once you melt a little bit of that piston yo the cylinder wall its pretty much over. You can tear it down , dissolve the melted bits off the cylinder walls , make sure the ring is loose , scotch brite the piston and throw the junk back together and it may last a few more rounds but its definitely on borrowed time

Funny story if you need a laugh. Years ago a guy brought a blower in. The electrode of the sparkplug was bent closed. His stepson knew just enough to get out of a job he didn't want to do. I saved the plug & the owner was pissed!

I've watched enough small engine repair videos that when the teaser was posted day before yesterday I knew it was likely going to be a no oil issue. interesting the bearing is what failed, and at half the price of new, it may be worth gambling on a piston/rod assembly.

Yes! I've used B'laster products since they were invented back in the '60s, they are the best. WD-40 smells kinda good, but other than that, it isn't good for much of anything.

On the stihl br blowers, I understand that they use a bronze bushing instead of a needle cage bearing where the piston rod and piston connect, is that why the recommend stihl 4 stroke oil.

I gave my 30 inch Sachs 120 chain saw to my son. When I got it back it was frozen solid! I pulled the muffler and saw the piston welded itself into the cylinder. My SSI does not allow for a new saw! Back to my motorcycle days. I had the saw on my bench and every time I walked by he saw I would use a torch and heat the cylinder then pound the cylinder with a rubber mallet. After weeks it finally came off showing a two-inch wide seizure on the piston with the rings welded into the groves. The new piston and rings were way oversize! I resorted to emery cloth and every time I walked by I would do a bit of sanding around the piston. Weeks later the rings were loose enough to remove and I filed the groves. I honed the cylinder, it had welded on aluminum too. When cleaned I resembled and mixed a fat batch of new fuel. It fired right up. Runs perfectly and the compression is up to new specs? 5 years later and it is still in great shape. I think it was run with straight gas plus I found the high needle only 1/4 out. It was seized directly at the exhaust port. What I did I have done before on two-stroke motorcycles with good results. I still run my fuel mix fat though.

I had a Husqvarna 65L chainsaw seize 35 years ago. I scraped the aluminum from the cylinder, filed the rough piston skirt and replace the compression ring. It still screams! This one sounds like it has considerable metal transfer from the piston. It's toast.

Never thought twice about it, my dad and I ran "cheep" gas in our 2 stroke mix. Started to have issues with the little saw, fella at the saw shop asked (first thing threw the door) what gas are you using? Haven't run ethanal since, have always run a mix, just pay more for non ethanal now.

Hey CHick ....Glad to see ya back and glad to hear you are recharged and ready to go...lol
I have been a auto tech for over 25 years and i DO NOT use WD40 EITHER ....... It is for the backyard mechanic !
But to loosen up a froze cylinder I use a combination of Marvel Mystery Oil and transmission fluid mixed..... reason for that it is what i lube up my airtools with everyday...
SO i always have some on hand . Give it a try ...you might like it for the frozen pistons like what you had today.
Well if he goes for the repair I would like to see a part 2 ......
Have a great week and like above welcome back !
