    I own this vehicle as well as a Tesla. The Mini is far more fun to drive, and actually goes further than the EPA range, unlike the Tesla. It was a fraction of the price too and qualified for the federal $7500 credit.
    If I had to pick a favorite it would be the Mini.

      130 miles with mixed highway and city, in the rain, temp 50-55F, with cabin heat on. 145 miles in nicer weather with similar driving.

    I probably don't have the same sort of concerns when assessing it as Munro's but I've had my Mini Cooper SE a week and i'm very impresesd. Mainly because the driving experience is great. The whole car though is better than I was expecting from a car that isn't a ground up EV.

    • @schmoab
      @schmoab 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The criticisms of the car on this channel are ridiculous. The fact that it’s not ground-up EV or that it has some level of road noise and the back seat is small. I mean come on. Nothing has been said about the performance of the car. And the interior blows away most of what’s out there in 2021. It’s not meant for 500 mile road trips.

    • @mikewhitehead50
      @mikewhitehead50 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@schmoab I think it’s because this channel focus on how the car is packaged and put together. Rather than the things a consumer might actually the bothered about. For example neither you or I care at all about how they’ve installed the motor under the bonnet, but it leaves them flabbergasted.

    We love our electric mini. Base model has everything you need and is a little over 30k, plus factor in the $7500 tax credit, it’s a great price. Quick to charge every night, so range is no issue. We use wireless apple car play for maps, etc so don’t care about the infotainment. This car is not meant to be a competitor to Tesla, etc. It is in its own niche, two door small hatch around town car.

    • @SteveBakerIsHere
      @SteveBakerIsHere 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think the price point is the thing that sells it. For commuting and a quick trip to grab shopping - it's going to be OK, but if you've got to drive any kind of distance, the crappy charging networks combined with the very short range of the car will make that miserable beyond belief. As was mentioned in the video - you can roll up to what you THINK will be a good place to charge and find that you can't...and once you're outside of a city, with only 10 miles of battery range left - you **NEED** that charger to work, and to work painlessly. If you run out of charge, you're going to need to call a tow truck. Also, it has a relatively poor top speed (93 mph) which means that overtaking at 80 or 85mph will be a miserable experience...so again, sucky for longer trips.
      But if it's an in-town car, then it needs better regenerative braking. For in-town, one-pedal-driving is AMAZING. If you're stuck in a 10 mile stop-start traffic jam and you're continually in that gas/brake/gas/brake cycle...it's uncomfortable...and you need regen to avoid eating into your (short) range availability in stop/start situations.
      To contrast that to a Tesla (which is, admittedly, a hell of a lot more expensive) is just no comparison. For road trips, with more range and a much MUCH better charging network, more top speed than you'll ever need and proper lane-centering steering (as standard) - you can drive a couple of thousand miles and still be comfortable. For in-town, I don't think the MINI wins (except on price). Tesla has better acceleration - and for such a large car, better handling too (I've been a long-time MINI owner - I know). In stop-start traffic, you just turn on the "cruise control" and auto-steer and the car does 100% of the work for you. Great regen and TRUE single-pedal driving makes driving in town a joy.
      So - yeah if you absolutely *NEVER* - not even once want to leave the city or have more than two people in the car - and if you can't afford the payments on a Tesla, then MAYBE the MINI might be a good choice. Bu that word *_"NEVER"_* is important here. Even if you only need to do one 300 mile trip a year - don't expect the MINI-SE to do it...it absolutely won't.
      My feeling is that if you have a Tesla - you could get the MINI as a cheap second car...but as your ONLY car...forget it...don't even consider it.

      130 to 145 miles for us so far. But we never use the GOM (guess o meter) as it's extremely pessimistic. Usually deleting 20 to 30 miles of potential range fully charged, tapering down to a missing 10 miles down low on charge.
      We're running stock Hankook Ventus summer tires. Yesterday was sort of a stress test here in the Pacific Northwest, wet roads, raining, temperatures of 50 to 55F so we were running cabin heat. Mixed driving of highway and city with many, many quick sprints...... averaged 4.5 miles/kWh after driving 90 miles. (Arriving home with over 1/4 battery remaining).
      Nice weather + similar driving would hover around 5.0 miles / kWh, giving us 140+ miles per charge.n

      I would choose a competitive market over a duopoly any day. Here in the States we tend to have very little competition in almost every conceivable service. Leaving one to four major players dividing territory amongst themselves ensuring local monopolies without "technically" being a monopoly in the business. Which is why we lag behind, significantly at times, from other nations. From Utilities and healthcare, to anything that isn't part of the gig economy.

    It's a great little local car, though we have easily taken it on a 140 mile weekend trip. A 5 minute DC fast charge stop, or 20 minute level 2 stop, gave us the buffer to complete the trip.
    Highway efficiency is quite impressive, but we're comparing it to a Gen 2 Volt and Kia e-Niro. The Gen 2 Volt was great for the city, but suffered significantly on the highway in EV efficiency. The e-Niro is just bigger and heavier, explaining the thirstier highway efficiency. We're running Hankook Ventus Prime 3s (stock) on the Mini, a summer orientated tire. The Niro and Volt came with more efficient, low rolling resistant tires.
    Off the line acceleration is a bit lackluster in the mini compared to the almost 300 ft/lbs of torque in the Volt. But quickly makes up for it once up to speed. I'd argue the Mini has more passing power on the highway over the Volt and Niro.
    No option to coast in the Mini. An option that's available in the Niro and Volt. But one pedal driving is far more intuitive over any attempts to mimic such in the Niro or Volt.

    • @spuddy4063
      @spuddy4063 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interestingly, I happen to own a 2018 Chevy Volt. not exactly sure what you were getting as to range? But mine gets 100 miles / 160 KM of range from May until the end of October. After that I get the rated range of 53 Miles / 85 KM.
      Maintenance is piddly considering the complexity of the vehicle. Oil changes once per year seems to be holding fine. Just replaced the brakes NOT because they needed changing but because after 155,000 KM I figured it was time. Safety is my concern. The mechanic however said those brakes are like new.
      I always use the paddle behind the steering wheel to slow down and never touched the brake pedal in the 4 years of owning this car. Or as the case may dictate that I needed to hold the car stopped at a traffic light or traffic / Stop sign.

      For the Volt, we usually saw 40 to 45 miles in the Minnesota winters when the vehicle was new. Nicer weather turned out 60 to 65 miles with mixed city and highway. But local, nice weather, driving turned out 75 miles at our best in Minnesota (2017 model). When comparing it to the larger and heavier Niro, the Volt would edge it out in efficiency at slower speed, but quickly fall behind above 50 MPH. Maybe that has to do with the gearing between the motor and axle, or the fact Volt uses two motors and a clutch set over the single motor of Niro and Mini....idk
      Loved the Volt though. One of the quietest vehicles we've owned.

      ...... also one of the smoothest vehicles we've owned. The natural regen braking between off pedal regen + brake pedal regen + steering pedal regen was flawless. Any use of the combination above was beautifully integrated to avoid jerky decelerations.... a trick I wish Kia used for the Niro. Mini didn't attempt such, they went with Tesla's approach where the brake pedal applies hydraulic brakes only, no blended regen braking with the brake pedal.

      The decent distance/energy performance on the highway for the mini is mostly due to its small cross sectional area, not because it has a very good drag coefficient (0.3) or efficient motors, batteries or power management system. Lucid engineered the Air to have a relatively small cross sectional area to get better range. Obviously there are space and safety tradeoffs, but a small aerodynamic profile is one way to get better range at highway speeds.

    Finally a male of typical height has to drive a vehicle meant for someone of a shorter height.
    We ladies experience the issue of the display being cut off by the steering wheel. It's either lower the steering wheel and cut off the speedometer or have gravity make our arms sore. Hopefully mounting the display like that helps those of typical female height be safer on the road.
    The shorter amount of space behind the driver's seat means they didn't think someone of a typical male height would want to drive this car and/or fit a passenger behind the driver's seat.
    Pair the two together and you can tell they designed the car for ladies without young children to kick the back of the seat.
    Hopefully the introduction of crash test dummies in typical female and children sizes will help vehicle makers to design beyond the typical male sizes. That would save many lives and make more comfortable vehicles in the process.

    • @SteveBakerIsHere

      The business of the dashboard display being cut off by the steering wheel - and the related problem of not being able to see a traffic light when you're right up close to it because the top edge of the windshield gets in the way - are not unique to the electric MINI - every one of the regular-sized MINI Coopers have that exact same problem. The REAL difficulty here is about what exactly gets cut off. On the gas powered MINI, it's just the top edge of the tachometer and the speedometer - which really doesn't matter a damn. But the people who designed the display put critical information (your remaining range) up there where you can't see it...and that's a rather serious screwup.
      The design of this car really does seem to have been done in a hurry...they didn't spend much time thinking about it.

    • @dhargarten
      @dhargarten 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have worked on crash test dummies in Europe where this car was designed, and there have been "tiny" dummies intended to represent different groups of the car users since forever. There's a "5% woman" which means the dummy is so small that only the smallest 5% of women are smaller than it, a "50%" man which is what you'd expect, and the "95% man", which is quite big and heavy. (There are also kid dummies as well ass special whiplash simulating dummies). The exact numbers for height and mass that these dummies are based on come from a while ago, so they don't reflect the rampant morbid obesity that the US is seeing, so that part is not very accurate; I don't think woman are shrinking in the US though so I assume the 5% woman dummy is still accurate enough.

    I guess there could be a single charging cap, but the main reason for the bottom one is to keep it on when you are charging on a Level 2 charger (at home, +/- 90% of the time) to avoid debris to accumulate in the bottom connectors used only for fast charging (+/- 10% of the time). There is no such problem on a Tesla since there is only one connector for Level 2 and DC Fast Charging (at the expense of a proprietary connector).

And it sucks ergonomics-wise as you can't just raise your hand 1mm or just enough to break friction between the hand and the wheel to let the wheel return 180° back to straight - you have to raise it significantly or else it'd touch your hand again while turning. Also you can't just adjust the wheel height so that it's just over the dash, because it could still block the view when turned. Also it just looks awkward. And the only point of that is to raise the bottom of the wheel a bit so you would have more leg space when getting behind the wheel - that is not only needed to only a fraction of drivers, but also easily achieved by making the bottom-most part of the wheel flat, like VW does.

    Old video, but if I could jump back 3 years and comment I would. I have owned an SE for over 4 years. The regen is one of the strongest I have driven - but you need to have it in the strong mode. Secondly, it really is, bar none, the most fun to drive *on the road*. A Tesla will obliterate the MINI in a straight line if it is a dual motor. Around a corner, there isn't much better. So fun to drive. If you drive sensiblly, the WLTP range is achievable every day of the week, and drive like a grandmother (no disrespect for grandmothers :) ) you can obliterate the US EPA range. My record is 270km of really boring driving (about 170 miles). In 4 years I have done this once to see what I could do. Never again - this thing is so much fun to drive, so eco driving goes out the window. I have track day tyres which make it corner even better, at a cost of about 10% range. I don't care about the range. How far can an actual go kart go on one tank? Overall a fun review, but maybe a few technical discrepancies (from my experience anyway). For the record, I have a lot of experience with the 3 and y, and a little in the s. Anyone saying the 3 drives better really doesn't know much about cars :)

    The reasonable price is the only compelling feature about this car, though the range would be fine for most commuters if it weren't for so much range anxiety in the U.S. Even still, I would not own a modern Mini Cooper as their long-term maintenance costs and reliability have proven to be poor. The Prius, Camry, and Civic generally top the list for reliability and maintenance over the last couple decades with the Mini dragging near the bottom for consumer cars. To be honest, this has soured my opinion of all BMW's. I'd love to have an original Mini Cooper, but not a modern one.

    Great video, I am not impressed with this car in the slightest. BMW needs to try much harder with their next iteration. This seems like a compliance thing they just kicked out as an afterthought. That or the EV team was given a tiny budget, BMW needs to really commit to do an EV Mini well. This just barely passes the class.

    • @js-hl5hv
      @js-hl5hv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, this is probably one of the best pieces of engineering you are ever likely to see. Being able to choose diesel, petrol or electric in real time on a production line is inspired. They also, unlike almost every other manufacturer, prioritised driving experience over range. They could have packed the boot out with batteries and doubled the range, but you would then have a heavy car which doesn't feel like a MINI. In it's intended environment (city) it is peerless. Due to its size and weight, it is one of the most efficient EVs you can get. You should go have a test drive of one, they are awesome little cars. Don't judge the range or efficiency by EPA numbers - they are out by about 30% (from experience).

    My first car was a 1964 Austin Mini with a range of around 220-250 miles per 5.5 imperial gallon tankful. It was spartan and absurdly cheap. This BMW is not cheap, nor does it have a good range. Plus, I would argue whether it has much of the cute and coolness of an original Mini. For an EV, BMW need to design a completely new car.

    Since the Cooper SE is basically a mashup-Mini platform + i3 drivetrain-I wish Paul had contrasted the two vehicles more. I’ve leased a 2014 and 2017 i3. Now that BMW has stopped producing the US-spec i3, I’m weighing whether to scrounge remaining i3 immediately or buy a Mini Cooper SE if I start commuting again in 2022. With the Bolt off the table and no other manufactures offering city cars in the US, I don’t see any other options.

    Sure, the charging network for Tesla is flawless. That’s why the model Y is 65k (plus destination and tax). I have a mini SE on order and it’ll be 27k after the tax credit. I’m also keeping my used Tacoma that I got for 15k for off road adventures. They’re both cheap to insure and I’m 23k UNDER THE MODEL Y. I’d rather take that savings and get a solar array on my house. I owned a BMW i3 for 3 years and never came close to using its 80 mile range in a day. The handful of road trips (maybe 3 over 3 years) were taken in my girlfriends car. We flew everywhere else. If you’re regularly on freeways covering over 100 miles to and from destinations then definitely get a Tesla. If you’re not in the car 20 hours a week like most of us then get an efficient run about that’s not carrying all of the extra weight that you’ll rarely use. Even if I had a Lucid Air with a 500 mile range I’d still rent a hybrid for a really long road trip. DC fast charging costs are not that much cheaper than gas and I just want to go wherever when exploring and not have to think at all about a charging network.
