I will always remember the very first time I ever heard Bennie and the Jets.
I was listening to my favorite radio station, WABC in New York, in the early 70s,
    on my little AM radio.
I had to stop what I was doing because the intro was so unusual; it really grabbed me.
I was kind of wondering what was going on ... and then ... “Hey, kids ...”
I had never heard anything like it in my young life. It blew me away.
I knew that I was listening to a master. There was no mistake about it.
And I’ve always considered Elton John a musician first.
The showboating and glamour never fooled me into thinking that he
was anything but a master of his province. It’s just so obvious.
Thank goodness that he decided to become a musician as opposed to anything else.

Elton John a side show dressing like a duck & idiot was the only way to bring a attention to himself that's when you don't have Talent like the GOAT. Elvis is the GOAT 🐐 nobody then or now could touch him Singing, performing appearance, holding a crowd in the Palm in his ✋. First Original Rock Star period & he didn't need fireworks, fire & all the shit you see Elton John and the shit you see today to put on a Concert. Just a Mic his guitar & even the piano & Singing! My teen years were saved by this album. I couldn't get enough EJ back in the mid 70's and I certainly needed distractions from a rough childhood. So between immersing myself in the Beatles and Elton - it was a certainty that I wanted to be a musician. Many other influences shaped my musical journey as well, as the 70's were a fertile ground for musical creativity and exploration, but there was something about EJ's songs in particular, as well as that rockin' original band, that was just infectious. But G.Y.B.R. was the pinnacle of his creative peak. There is no question that this collection is one of the greatest pop albums ever created. And as a huge Beatle fan, that is saying an awful lot. I love that Elton listens to new music and is a rabid fan as well. As a true musician, he appreciates what's great about the current landscape, even if you have to dig through some of the crap to find it. The other artists here did a great job in honoring these iconic songs, with their own twist on Elton and Bernie's creations. I love that he gives them so much credit for what they've done. One "cover" that need a special mention is the Sara Bareilles version of this title track, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". If you love the song as much as I do - PLEASE find it here on TH-cam and you will be VERY glad you did..! Elton himself was blown away by it so much that he was quoted as saying that it might be better this his version. It's that good - and you'll need a Kleenex for this one. Very powerful stuff indeed. But it would have not been possible without a great great song to start with. Thank you Elton for all the joy and all of the musical passion you helped created in me. "Someone saved my life" ..... indeed ..!!

During the Aids crises, I walked past a deserted bar in NY 's Greenwich Village called Yellow Brick Road. Whenever I think back to those days, the song that stands out in my mind is always Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. We were all seeing too many young people die. "This boy is too young to be singing the blues", are the lyrics that stand for the whole experience for me, and the words haunt me to this day. A beautiful song with heart . Thankyou Elton.

Those who are dissing the younger artists completely missed the point of the end of this interview, you are getting mixed up with the star like quality and the celebrity side of him, but you guys are forgetting that he is a musician first, and musicians love music, different types of music, different people, the collaboration side of the music, hearing how other people outside of your direct circle can interpet an already famous piece of work, the intent of the remastered version was for creative freedom that is revamped to something different, each of the younger artists may not have a known legacy such as Elton John but they certainly did a great job at bringing a new sense of life in the music.

They had the complete package of the lyrics by Bernie, the music which Elton wrote in 3 days(!) the perfect band of Davey Johnstone, Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson, Gus Dudgeon's engineering and production, and let's not forget about orchestral arrangements by Del Newman and David Hentshel's ARP synth arrangements.

HAPPY 70th Birthday Elton Hercules John !
    .
Thank you for this upload, much appreciated..
I liked YBR, but its not my favourite Album, Funeral for a friend is always my most anticipated track on that album.
Its great to see that old footage, I have never seen that before.
Gus and Shiela died when he went off the motorway and ended upside down in his Jaguar in a ditch.
They were returning home in the early hours from a party.
it was never clear if they died from the impact of the cash or drowned from what I remember.
oddly enough he was in the process of suing both Elton and David Bowie.
Gus's greatest work was Blue Moves, but I found that album to be very depressing, and one had a sense of foreboding that Elton and Bernie were going to break up, which they did for a while.
Dee sadly passed away, as did Guy Babylon. So it was nice to see some footage of Dee, Davey and Nigel.
I guess Ray Cooper was not around in the YBR years, I have always found that he made a huge difference to any track he played on. I think he went very much unnoticed until Blue Moves, where he was pictured with the rest of the new band on the inside cover, after Dee and Nigel had been dismissed.
personally I never liked Candle in the Wind, it was a huge mistake in my book associating that song with Marilyn Monroe, Bernie should have used a more generic reference to famous people, rather than using Marilyn's name.
But then, who am I to criticise my Hero and inspiration Bernie Taupin ? :-) I could sit and listen to Bernie talking all day long.

People who appreciate his music , never need reminding how fu##ng astounding his musical ability is . I listen to yellow brick road almost every week .
But along with his music ability , there is no denying it's twinned with a showmanship that I can only compare with the likes of Freddie Mercury .
The music alone , would have eventually found its way into the homes of music lovers around the world , but it was his truly outrageous stage personna that lifted it up another level . And he found audiences all over the world , who embraced the spectacle of an Elton John concert .
But , as he acknowledged himself , he had an amazing team around him , who all contributed to the music . Long may we see such great artists , instead of the music management creations , who are moulded into a marketplace product , instead of musicians who are first and foremost about the music ,& entertaining an audience .

While I'm not a fan of some of these covers, I'm happy that Elton chose to let these artist do their own interpretation of his own songs. They put a new flare on some old classics.

I have this album on vinyl, cassette, and cd, and if I still had an 8-track, I would have it on 8-track. No way, will a tribute album compete with it. in fact, I will go out and buy the tribute album right now.

Fascinating to me that Bernie Taupin sounds almost American here in this video.
The British accent is barely perceptible.
Considering he's lived in Southern California for quite a long time now, since he moved there in the mid 70s, it makes sense that much of the Lincolnshire accent might have diminished a bit over time.
(He has a ranch near Santa Ynez.)

There are definitely a few vowels that have quite a strong American flavour but the English accent is still dominant.

I wonder what the process was for getting the music “written” - ie putting the dots on the manuscript. Who actually “wrote” the songs.
