You will lose your best employee if you don't promote them, since you're likely not the only employer on the planet. Coach, train, and develop your high performing team members. Be transparent and tell them what skills they need to work on. Find opportunities for them to thrive and stretch that don't require people leadership. Good bosses coach, because you will lose your best employee. 😏
Exactly! Promotions don't always have to be into management. There are different options for promotions, but employers must be willing to invest in their top talent. If they don't and there is no growth possible, then they will leave like you said. I know this because I'm one of them. My employer saw a top performer in me and decided to promote me into management, even though I never said I had any ambitions for that role. All fine and well because any new position poses learning opportunities, but I'm not sure this role actually makes me happy. The promotion I did want had more to do with specialization within my field and they decided to promote what they saw as flight risks instead of me, even though these people were less qualified than me. Guess what? I'm looking around at different employers despite my promotion to manager, because these other employers do offer the growth opportunities I always had my sights on. I'm currently waiting on an employer that possibly wants to give me a specialization spot, despite not having interviewed for it like you usually have to, just to get me to make the transition. If the employer can get everyone on board and give me the spot, I'm leaving my current employer for sure.

I am the top performer in my department. If they do not promote, I am gone. I do not care about "what"s, "if"s, "but"s they can talk about.
