    You had to be a kid from a well off family to have a train set like this in the twenties and thirties; especially after 1929! Amazing how many were sold despite the depression.

  • @Shipwright1918
    @Shipwright1918 7 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    On the one hand, it's great that these old toys are valued, but on the other, I'm a bit sad as that train will likely never run again, and certainly no kid will get to play with it.
    I'm not trying to pooh-pooh collectors or anything like that, but I think the true value of these trains comes from the joy and pleasure they bring by doing what they were meant to, being run on a layout.
    You only get to live once, after all, and I'd rather have fun with my trains now than put them in a vault so my heirs can get rich off them.
    Just saying...

    • @DrFrankensteam
      @DrFrankensteam 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Shipwright1918 I totally agree with you! I know someone that has a 1935 Flying Yankee in such great shape he won’t even take it out of the box to show it to anyone let alone use it. I’m sure it’s beautiful but nobody will ever know unless he takes it out to at least show someone. While I can appreciate his wanting to preserve its condition, what good is it?!
      To each his own I suppose. I prefer to purchase ones that don’t have the box and are in nice shape. It keeps the price reasonable and I don’t have to worry too much about scratches and dings should they happen!

    The reason this is going down in value is that the generation that values toy trains is aging out. The center of the generation is boys who were 10 in 1950, when an electric train was the #1 Christmas present. That boy would be 80 in 2020-possibly deceased or having health problems, or at the very least downsizing and less likely to be amassing possessions. Hence, a gradually declining market for toy trains.

      Well last year at this time the market was hot and this was worth big bucks. But six months ago some old guy died who owned a warehouse full of these. The crazy guy had them under lock and for like 60 years. The family had a giant auction which eventually flooded the market. Now your train is worth next to nothing. I even got caught holding 2 of these. We keep one in the john ontop of the toilet tank. 90 bucks is all I can do. That's 20 for esch of the big cars and 10 dollas for the tank car... cuz I'm in a good mood today

    • @jamesrawlins735
      @jamesrawlins735 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly model trains don't have much interest to younger people these days - the entire hobby is in a sad state ; I know a lot of shops have gone out of business - and internet only hobbies are tough for attracting new people. (Amateur radio is kind of in the same boat in the US, and let's not even bring up stamp collecting)

    • @prestonsvideos6133
      @prestonsvideos6133 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I heard the reason it is this way is because when the younger start out with their first starter set and want to buy more it's set at these overwhelming high prices. They may have money to buy a few DCC engines and a controller but not make a whole layout. This is why I'm trying to join that club.
