The only kids who ever got these Blue Comet sets after 1931 were kids from affluent families - a lot of kids never got toys during the Great Depression.
That would be great. I asked if MTH would bring back the Tinplate Traditions brand. They said that standard gauge wasn’t selling well which contributed to not renewing the Lionel license. The trains ate getting rare, snd the switch tracks are nearly impossible to get, despite the other track returning to production. I need 8 more 72” switches to finish a layout. I have two 400e locos, Blue Comet with brass and red wheels and black with red wheels and brass with the matching passenger cars and eight 216 hoppers and two cabooses. I got the DCS Wi-Fi and accessory unit and boxes of track. The collection is a mix of Lionel Corporation and MTH replicas. The quality exceeds my 1980s and 1990s LGB G gauge collection. The DCS system blows LGB command control and sound systems out of the eater. I recently got a second hand 1/32 scale Triplex that could pull the panels off the walls. MTH needs to up the tinplate and G scale game, because its high caliber.
I know most people wouldn’t want to do this experiment… but I have obsessively considered the idea… of accelerating a Tinplate standard gauge train fitted with an unusually powerful motor, on a very long layout… down the track up to speeds of 250 inches per second. This is about 400 scale miles per hour btw. At some point another tinplate train would be traveling TOWARDS the first train, and also reach speeds of 200-250 inches per second. The two trains collide head-on at a closing speed of 500 inches per second. Would the trains experience substantial deformation upon smacking head on at those speeds?
A bummer that MTH and Lionel are discontinuing Lionel Corporation Tinplate in 2019; really it's pure BS by both companies, as they could've renewed the deal past 2019, but MTH refused Lionel's terms.
