They should put also auto switch dark and light mode (sunrise and sunset). That would be cool.
I like the idea. 👌🏼
I like this kind of content, even when its products like this that I dont own
I appreciate there are other people out there who are also into small and obscure new features of niche bike tech. 👌🏼
Now all we need is DARK MODE IN STRAVA. You hear us @STRAVA ?
This aged well
Finally!
@@CamiloCasta7 woohoo!
I really like dark mode on the 'normal' datafields. The contrast is really good.
However, on the map and profile it is horrible. The chevrons for a route are also black, so yo don't see the route. And the details are not clear to me.
So I would like to see a possibility to have light mode for map and profile and the possibilty for dark mode on the other pages.
Route chevrons are black in dark mode and nearly impossible to see, so its unusable for me as of now :(
Good job on shedding the light on dark mode, Shane!
I would PAY to get a firmware update for it to tell Strava what bike I'm using for the ride. I know Wahoo listens to you. MAKE IT HAPPEN!
Ride type/profiles has been long requested. Now Strava is automatically categorising rides based on the sub_sport in the activity, it's even more important they do this. In the meantime you can use something like ActivityFix to do this for you with Strava. th-cam.com/video/I9_PAkscrp0/w-d-xo.html
Dark mode will not affect battery life unless screen is OLED, which isn’t the case here.
It may in the next product around the corner.
Thanks @serg1um answering the question that was on my mind.
True, OLED dark mode will be more power efficient due to turning off the pixels to display black.
On the battery charge not being 100%, I've noticed variability in the battery life depending on the charger and cable used on my Roam V2. At all times the unit says 100% but with the same sensors / phone paired the battery life can vary between 10hours and approx 17hours. Searched the forums and saw that the Roam V2 needs to use the USB C cable it came with and a non-apple charger that has an output in excess of 2 Amps in order to get a full charge. Since using a specific charger / cable combination the battery life in consistently close to the Wahoo claims, I was about to return the unit up to this change in charger.
Mine doesnt charge on usb c power supplies that Support the Power Delivery Standard, wahoo messed up the hardware there. It charges fine on any "dumb" charger though (or PC USB Sockets etc)
thats wild if true
I have the same problem with my roam V2. 100% charged only lasted 10hours
@@jcdoh7669 try a different charger block, one that has an output of a minimum of 2 Amps at 5.0V (should be printed on the unit), is not an Apple item and use the thick cable that came with the Roam. That worked for me, I noticed fairly fast that the time increments to use 10% power became longer and more linear across the range of the battery. In the past it would burn really fast over the initial drop from 100% but then slow down as the remaining % decreased.
dark mode only reduce power if used with AMOLED display. For TFT display is no benefit.
Still looks better and more easily readable in light mode.
Have to disagree there. Changed to Dark mode and during evening rides, find the dark mode MUCH better. Except for the 'ridden' line that isn't visible as pointed out by Shane, but other than that - great !!
Hoe do you read a screen in full sunlight whit sunglasses on? I just do see it good. Driving in the evening same thing. Screen is just not bright
Wow that lookahead feature is really fantastic, I am quite envious of it now. Thanks for the great content!
Have you noticed that wahoo does something to control the lighting in Garmin varia lights? There used to be a notification about the light mode on the car detection bar, but now the lighting turns off automatically when you finish training. there is no mention of this in changelog.
Their light control is sneaking into some firmware releases. It’s still not official…. Yet.
@@gplama Mine was off at the end of the ride, I was so confused. I though it have been off for the whole ride. Next ride I made sure it's on, arrive, off again. I was like what is going on. I updated my varia radar firmware (I usually never do). Do an other ride, check a few time during the ride to make sure it's on. Arrive from the ride, still on! The firmware must have fix it, success. End the ride, light goes off, I felt stupid...
Was hoping wahoo can control the light modes on the Varia like the Garmin light network… hope they update that part of the firmware soon.
Thanks for sharing this Shane. Not an option I'll use on my Bolt V2 having watched your demo; seems like you lose some detail in dark mode.
Seems I'm not the only one who's already flying downhill when my Wahoo thinks I've reached the summit. 🙂
To be fair, my Garmin does that too
pff you're telling me they couldn't add the same dark mode to the Roam 1. It's not THAT old
Your colours look a lot more vibrant than on my roam2 , how do you turn the brightness up ? I can't figure it out ,I have 3 sensors connected if that makes any difference .
just changed mine to dark mode but had to change it back pretty quickly, the text is way less visible than light mode, dark mode would probably work better if you're riding in the dark.
Is it only me, but in 4:00 theres no line visible on the dark mode. In the bright mode you can see a black line for the path thats already been passed, but in dark mode theres also a black line which cant be seen on the dark background.
He says that at 3:36
Looks like you can now control your Varia's light setting from Wahoo head units after this update too. Not in the changelog, but I see a new "Toggle" option when my Varia is connected.
It'll be in a changelog soon.... I hope. :)
Would be a pleasure to chose in the app that some pages will not be affected by the dark mode…
Just purchased bolt v2. Screen is very dim. Is there a brightness control? I have find only auto off or on settings bud no real brightness.
Great video! How is the radar car passing line moved to the right side of the screen ?
I’m in the USA and mine came on the left ( as I need it ). Did you move it , or does Wahoo send it to countries with it on the appropriate side ? Thanks, Dave
Thank you, I might try it and now at least I know my Roam has a Dark mode, BUT,
it makes sense that the pixels beeing turned on(to darken the screen) do hinder battery.
Cheers for the complete take on it!
Well, the screen is black, it'd make more sense for it to save more energy as it only needs to light the letters and colors.
@@serdiezvWell the screen isnt black. So.. yeah...
@@wsbygt the screen of the V2s definitely is black, at least on the Bolt
Stoked for dark mode!
Be nice if Strava got the memo 😉
I found dark mode doesn't work well with planned workouts. You can't/hard to see the work out progression line
The display panel doesn't draw more or less power depending on the state of the pixels, so battery tests are bogus.
Does the wahoo elemnt just have the climb pro mode?
On my bolt the chevrons are black on black background for the road ahead… impossible to use. Any tips how to fix it?
Not to use dark mode… maybe? Might be one for Wahoo Support.
On Elemnt, battery charge shown is non-linear. It goes down to ~60-80% rather quickly and then goes down really slowly. So the test would have made more sense to be done with more sensors for quicker discharge or just simply waiting for longer.
How did you get the page at 5:10 to show the battery percentage? I don't know how to do that in settings.
That’s just a data field. Configured from the Elemnt app.
Not sure if anyone is having the same issue as mine but my updated version came up to WD14-17021 and all of these features are not on my device. Based on their website it's a totally different version than what I have on my ROAM V2. It's WC46-16781. Why is there two different versions? is one for ROAM and BOLT? I'm not understanding this
One for Wahoo Support.
@@gplama they ain’t helping, I’ve been on them for the last couple of days
Any rumors of wahoo releasing a refresh of the head units in 2024?
I don't do rumours. There's enough shitposting by the typical clickbait cycling media as it is.
I really need to upgrade my bolt v1 to something more recent... and bigger. As I'm getting older, the smaller texts (map screen) can be next to impossible to read.
On the other hand, I also want to buy PM pedals.... :)
Why not both? *insert that meme here*
@@gplama hah! New bathroom, holidays... I'm not 100% there's budget for both this year :). We'll see!
i upgraded to the Roam V2 (have a Bolt V1 and a Garmin 530) for the same reason and I love it. The larger, non-reflective screen and the zoom functions are a big help. Upgraded before a cycling trip where I needed the mapping, did a similar trip last year with the 530 and mapping was fine but much better this year with the Roam.
@@MrJwmurph Nice!
Same. My eyesight has deteriorated terribly since I bought my Bolt, I can’t read much on it any more. Things got too expensive though
This update seems not yet supported for some countries in Asia. I am on WA51-16525 for both Bolt v2 and v1. Not sure if some server mirror problems on Wahoo side.
I noted in dark mode the 3sec Power sported a black background rather than reflecting the zone colour, but in, say, Climb Pro the colours did show, I wonder why?
Always helpful, Shane!
Hi Shane, tks for that. One question I have not found answer yet. Can turn by turn be switched off when a route is selected. Reason I am asking is that I always check the map on downhills for screening the corners coming up. TBT then gets in the way and zooming out does not make sense as judging the corners is then not really possible anymore. Hope you get what I tried to explain. cheers from switzerland
I'm not sure. So you want navigation but no navigation prompts?
Have you tried choosing "mute" on the route detail popup page?
@@gplama yes the navigation to continue just the pop-up from turn-turn-info (eg left in xx meters) not to show up as it overlays sometimes an upcoming corner and when going down at a high speed you‘re unable to see how much of a bend in the road this is. It makes it then difficult to judge the breaking (guess I should not rely on the map for breaking points anyway 😳) but I find it annoying
@ No but will check. tks
Things I'd like to see in an update:
- Serious work about shortening boot time (it's taking more than 2 minutes ffs!)
- Better battery life when idle (it sucks way more battery when paused than when running... Why?)
- Profiles: the option to set profiles for a single device. I'd like to select between road/mtb/whatever BEFORE starting a ride, and associating each it with a bicycle
- That when you're on something which inclination it's between 0 and 1, it showed the actual inclination value - for everything between 1 and 0 it shows only 0!
- something like a thin colored bar at an edge of the screen or a tiny icon inside the start/pause button that tells battery life or whatever stat you choose
Things I didn't wanted in an update:
- "Dark mode"
Switch off everything you do not need, especially features that require heavy computations such as Strava segments. Basically it means Backlight OFF, Leds OFF, Wifi OFF, Live tracking OFF, Show other users OFF, Strava live sgments OFF, and if you do not need navigation for some rides remove the map page too. Connect all sensors in bluetooth low energy mode instead of ANT+ if you can.
Now Wahoo supports Garmin Varia light!
does anyone know how to choose a specific speed on auto pause on the bolt V2? I want it to autopause everytime im at 3mph or less, instead of 0mph. is this possible? couldnt find it in the settings in the wahoo app or the element app
Can you power these devices from a hub dynamo?
Yes
Thank you that is helpful!
Thanks..btw..have you ever seen pothole? Your road surfaces are ridiculous. You need to visit the roads of southern England..or maybe not!😂
I choose my roads wisely on the road bike. There's a lot of crappy roads around here that need repair (which are good for gravel bikes!).
I love your videos!
Just downloaded the new firmware and quite honestly dark mode doesn't seem as good as normal.
Instead of wahoo creating features that most people don't care about. How about creating a feature like virtual partner like Garmin, so you can race yourself against a previous activity!
Virtual partner is a feature most people ask about turning off on Edge units! 🤣
Like older Garmins the Wahoo head units really need a high quallity USB cable and a 2A+ power source. Probibaly becase a good charger/cable will take the cells to 4.2v and a quillty high capacety - low drain cell will hold that for a while, but the unit takes 100% battery to be the "nominal" voltage of 3.7 and a crappy USB/source might only just get it there.
Yes, my Bolt V2 is really fussy about what USB C cables it will and will not work with. Bit of a pain TBH.
At least it makes me appreciate this feature existing on Edge :)
Thanks for this. My first question was about battery life and of course you did a deep dive on that. Nice job as usual!
White text on green background for the grade does not look that good.
Hello! Can navigation also be used for walking? I would also like to use it for trekking as well as mountain biking
I guess so. Using a smart watch for navigation while walking would likely be a better option.
Interesting. I always thought that displaying a white pixel takes more energy (as it requires all RGB sub-components of the pixel to be on) comparing to black (where all are off) but now when I think about it I can't provide any prove or source for this :D :D
Anyway, cool stuff although not what I would like to see from Wahoo as ex ROAM owner ;-)
I think it depends on the screen type.Wahoo doesn't have a 'white' pixel as far as I know. To me it looks like white is represented by not applying any colorisation at all to the pixel/area, which in theory would mean less battery... maybe.
It’s only on oled screens where each pixel has its own light. This is lcd with backlighting. It illuminates the whole screen.
Hey Lama, how do I change which side the Varia alerts show on the bolt v2? At 1:05 your alerts are showing on the right hand side of your units. My bolt v2 is currently showing these alerts on the left side of the screen which I believe is the stock setting. I've looked everywhere online to try and figure this out but with no luck. Thanks heaps for the videos. Keep up the great work. Cheers.
Should be within the Elemnt app. Or the radar sensor settings on the ELEMENT unit. I can't recall exactly which.
Awesome! Thanks@@gplama
Not quite the Wahoo update I've been waiting for, was hoping the rumors of a new device announcement in March were true.
Any news on that? I don’t want to upgrade my v1 only to see a new computer this year.
@@korsveien Doesn't seem like it. The rumors were about the first quarter, so my guess is that it was actually about the firmware updates that took place. I went ahead and upgraded to a v2 roam.
Lama, has Wahoo said if this will be made into an auto on/off day/night feature similar to Garmin? Or will we have to manually select every time?
No indication. I’m sure they could update this for sunset/sunrise automation.
@@gplama thanks for the quick reply!
1:29 is the green blobs for parks a light vs. dark mode or roam vs. bolt?
Roam vs Bolt.
Which rear view camera are you using: thx!
For this ride: Rear radar was the Garmin RTL515. Front facing camera for the on-bike footage was a GoPro 12 with Max lens mod.
New roam model is needed. I’m shallow, but it just looks dated. Bezel too big, not nice form factor. I switched to 1040 solar simply for something more modern even though I actually prefer wahoo. A new Roam with a better sized screen and shape would switch me back in a heartbeat.
Your graphics presentation are not showing the reality. The colors of the Roam V2 are not as vibrant as you are showing in the graphics. In fact the colors are more like watercolors. It’s a shame that Wahoo uses in all there presentations colors that dont add up to reality.
I’m using the screen recording function. The colours are EXACTLY what the unit produces. As for what the screen looks like… well.. that’s dependent on the environment it’s used/viewed.
黑暗模式無法導航... 導航的箭頭完全看不到
One day we will use dedicated app on smartphones with phone case and bike mount. GPS are really old and not relevant anymore. Apps are developed and will replace dedicated GPS computer
Do you know any polished ones? Last time I checked I couldn't find one that is comparable to the wahoo ui
Strava, Komoot, Google map there are a lot of them, big down size is battery but it will depend on your phone (which is most of the case in your pocket)@@lellotrello2338
after i completely trashed my smartphone battery with constant navigation on, and regarding the battery life even if the battery is still good, i tend to disagree. bought a roam v2 specifically because it's a dedicated device that will last longer for this purpose.
a gps goes 10 hours from 2.59 Wh battery with the screen on
Looks like they're finally ending support for the V1 devices and original ELEMNT entirely. No reason this couldn't have been available for those other than a business decisions to push people towards the newer units.
That's a shame, I love my original Elemnt and find the larger B&W screen really good to follow off road
There is an update this week for the Elemnt. That’s good to see.
this is new? my 8 years old garmin does this automatically when the sun goes down.
Yes, it's new in the Elemnt range.
shame roam v1 doesn't have this option :(
I thought that it was a Wahoo selling point that all versions of the same device used the same firmware.
Bolt v1 does have the option! Just without any effect. I was wondering the other day thankfully the video provides context ;)
The more i look at a W.Roam2 i think it's superior to Karoo2!
Which is no longer in stock. Hmmm! 🤔
If you don't want a touchscreen, then the Roam is probably well worth a look.
@@gplama are you hinting Karoo 3 is coming? It's been a long while. They pretty much did nothing for years.
Karoo2 is waaaay better in design
@@thomasglaser291 The design is dated and slow and has errors..it's not performing as others on the markets are and do, battery, auto-routing etc..theirs lots of problems with it
Oh wow I would have thought this was already a thing many years ago like Garmin... 🤦🏽♂️
