At 14:32 I worked at that shop on the right. Paint O Rama collision back in the 80's across from Hermans Gardens. We went to that party store every day on lunch, man could I tell you some stories. Thanks for the video Frank
Great memories. I went to Mackenzie (C/O ‘93) and skipped school MANY DAYS, eating at Royals on the corner. I remember those Burgers were Dinner Plate Big!! lol A lot has changed over the years..
I live on Joy in Westland now. I'd move back to Detroit in a second if I could get my childhood home back. Trenton and McGraw. The now yellow house by the billboard sign. I'd have that yellow siding taken off and restore to white.
Way chill video. Detroit is such an epic location near the strait by the lakes and so green. Fun to see what’s going on there as it has been thru so many changes.
I haven't lived in Detroit since 1985-its always been home-I am sad to see this but know it will bounce back!!! These were once my hoods-Thanks!! What up doe?
I like the way that you are describing Detroit on this video. As someone who lives a half hour from Detroit, it gives me great pride to hear you detail everything respectfully! It’s another TH-camr that makes videos like this, and the disgusting racial undertones that he use are literally cringeworthy. I hope you get many subscribers……. You just earned one here 🙋🏽♀️
I grew up on the 9100 block of Prairie between Chicago & Joy Rd. That "Dollar Daze" at the 5:09 mark used to be "Food-a-Rama" back in the day. Prairie can be seen at 5:31 mark. I lived one block down from there.I used to go to the dairy queen on Wyoming, off of Joy Rd, just a few steps away from Mckenzie high school. My cousins lived on Mendota, between Joy Rd & Chicago. I'm definitely from Joy Rd. Thanks for posting this.
I've recently been checking out Detroit's real estate and came across your videos; they're very enjoyable. What is going on in Detroit? Why is real estate so cheap? There are some nice places for sale over on E. Outer Drive that are very nice looking and very cheap; I don't get it. Is unemployment so bad up there? Have gangs taken over? I would love to hear more about the city. Keep up the great work.
@@FredMaples Was that God's House of Prayer? My church was in that same building - in the 1960's it was Boulevard Congregational - where I was baptized. Great memories!
I really like these driving tours. You mentioned there are more restaurants opening downtown. When I was last in Detroit 3-years ago,I don't recall seeing any fast food places. Is that still the case? Merry Christmas and watch yourself out there,Fred.
On the corner of Pinehurst and Joy Rd was a club called the Paramount Lounge. Back in the day I hung out in there frequently. Sam Gray the owner, Tiki Joe the cook, Whistle the DJ…
Joy Road and Clairmount intertwined in that area near Grand River. We lived at Joy Road and American Street. The streets got all chopped up after I-96 was constructed, and we used to take the Joy Road bus to Northwestern High School, but would have to transfer to the Dexter Bus, at Grand River and East Grand Blvd, or we just walked to the school. So much history in that area. You passed right by our home on American Street! We used to shop at the Food-A-Rama, on Livernois and Joy Road. We could walk anywhere during the 60’s and 70’s!
I drove that route 5 days a week. It breaks my heart ❤️ now. But I could have gave you a better tour . You passed by plenty of places. Where famous people. Grow up . David Ruffin , prairie & Joy rd . Judge Mathis Greenfield & Southfield. Judge Bennie Neopoleon . Smokey Robinson , had relatives that lived on prairie. Seen him quite often, as a child. Good history there .💯
That’s my childhood area I lived in those apartments on Joy Road and exit now when you coming off Southfield freeway you make that right drive down a few blocks you’ll see the apartments on the left right next to what used to be a daycare gray building only three floors Mr. LEE was our landlord lol that man Jerry curl was strong 💪🏾 😂 my apt was a few blocks down from the murdah mac you didn’t drive all the way down to telegraph you might as well you’re in a car you’ll be all right
Fred I got to tell you right between Joy Road and Tireman and watching your TH-cam video it seems that the only thing that's really have right are the streets I suspect you're just reading the signs as you go by so where are you really from
There is no house iin Detroit that goes for $500.00 or $600.00, You can barely get one for $700.00 so yyou are wrong on that $850.00 or better, yyiu can't even get an apartment fior less then $800.00 any lower you getting getting a ghetto home or apartment

Crime, taxes, failing infrastructure, horrible roads, constant construction, corrupt city officials, oh and did I mention the crime?
You past our church on Joy road...its funny, that was me in the grey van in front of you on Joy and sheafer
Thanks for the comment. Yes, I’m on Joy Road often. Where exactly is your church?

That beauty supply building use to be a bank back in the day. The burger spot on Wyoming use to be called Royals in my time.
That was Royals. Elmer's is on Oakman and West Chicago. I'm a Mackenzie Stag. We hung out at both places.😊
