As long as the ceiling hasn't been painted this works great. If it has been painted before or after or even both, your going to be refinishing the whole ceiling. I have seen people use a water hose in an empty house to wash it off the ceiling but you can imagine the mess they had to clean up afterwards. I did popcorn ceilings for decades, I must have done 25-30K houses with Popcorn from small to huge. Good vibes your way for doing this. I have to do it in my kitchen and living room with bad shoulders. Have a great day!
25K to 30K houses? I do not envy you! That was a JOB and it was in a garage, small room AND mess didn't matter AND I tried to keep it clean...basically you end up turning it into plaster of paris all over the place. I found the edges that had paint from the wall spray came off clean in a sheet...but I guess I'm VERY glad it was NOT all painted. Thanks for the comment!
