The biggest positive for my generation (Born in 98) is that popcorn ceilings dampen sound. So everyone is recording videos or just talking online. the popcorn ceiling will help dapen background noise like PC fan noise and other things. I think itll make a comeback in offices in homes.

    • @nbooky
      @nbooky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes indeed. Popcorn got their bad name possibly due to low ceilings and asbestos back in the days. It also signals the building is quite old in US. Nowadays ceilings are higher so the popcorn is less obvious.

Wow. This video comes out at just the right time. I hate the popcorn and what's worse it's not just the ceiling but the walls as well in my home. I was forced to drywall my entryway ceiling after my son accidentally stepped thru while in the attic. I thought, perfect, now I can skim coat the walls and come back with any texture I want. I've done coat after coat and still not satisfied with my texturing. After watching this I'm pretty sure I'm going to revert back to the original look. And to think I wanted to remove the popcorn for my entire home! This video is instant stress relief and saves my bacon for sure! Many many thanks Jeff!

Popcorn ceiling was a dog fur magnet in my house, especially near the ceiling vents. Hideous!!
I see a lot of the comments are about how to remove the popcorn, so I'll add my 2 cents: I lightly scraped off the popcorn with a stiff rubber squeegee, which left some texture but not the actual popcorn. Then I painted, and now there's no fur but I can't see imperfections and I really like it!

Had to do some popcorn repair that didn't turn out as well as I hoped. I've painted over the repair as I thought it would hide it better but still not as good as I'd like. Would you recommend removing the patches and reattempt to apply or should I respray my ceiling? If I respray do I need to remove the old texture or could I texture over it? I love my popcorn ceilings. I actually painted my existing popcorn ceiling and found out by accident that Dunn Edwards Ultra Grip primer mimics the original color of the ceiling so well, I didn't have to paint over the primer! I used a roller and brush.
My GF had the popcorn ceilings removed to try and achieve the smooth flat ceiling. She has a very large house and it didn't come out very well. You could see all the imperfections so eventually had a small amount of texture sprayed on.

I've removed A LOT of popcorn ceilings in my line of work, and honestly the drywall underneath majority of the time ins't too bad, you will always have to fix it up, but its not to the point where it takes hundreds of hours to fix, its just time consuming because you have to come back to it, remove, sand (drywall sanders work great for this) patch, tape, let dry, come back sand, prime, patch imperfections, come back sand, prime patches, paint sand, paint done.

I removed the popcorn off the ceiling in the breakfast room area and smoothed out around the taped joints. It only took me about 4 hours to do everything and I painted the next day. @@Angela-yg3bc I used a small spray bottle that Walmart sells in cosmetics section filled with water, spray about 12" x 24" area till wet but not soaking, wait 1 minute or so and lightly scrape in a straight line on wet area (I used a large plastic scraper) and do not gouge into the ceiling. Be careful when going over the taped joints not to get your scrapper underneath the tape, also you just want to remove surface popcorn so go gently. You will want to put plastic sheeting on the floor, this stuff makes a mess. After your done removing the popcorn just go over any areas where you see the joint tape with joint compound and smooth it out to blend with ceiling and wait 24 hrs to paint. Make sure the popcorn on your ceiling has not been painted because this won't work with painted popcorn. Check out Paul Peck Drywall YT channel he has tons of video on doing ceilings.

Knife it in random directions before it fully dries, aka knockdown takes an extra 5 minutes. Looks a million times better. If spray on ceiling is solely for some kind of sound echo reduction or hiding flaws may as well save the mess and just roll the mud on, even that looks a million times better. Spray texturing a ceiling really doesn't hide flaws other than pits and bubbles. It will not hide large concaved or convexed areas due to poor finishing.

Two things I see people doing that are inexperienced (or lazy) with applying popcorn and/or knockdown texture:
I see it all the time. People clearly slapped drywall up, taped and mudded, and *immediately* sprayed popcorn all over it. No sanding, no priming, nothing. This is fine, I guess... if you're never planning on the ceiling being scraped, and you don't care about the longevity of the texture hold. If someone ever goes to scrape it in the future, the popcorn texture will have fused with the wet tape lines, and the mud on every nail or screw hole as well, and it will be like trying to scrape limestone build-up off a brick wall. Good luck.
The other, also very common annoyance I deal with, is when someone uses *WAYYYY* too much mud for knockdown texturing. So much, that when they knock it down, it all smears together all over the ceiling, creating big blobs that resemble continents on an embossed map of the Earth. It should be a light application, honestly. It does the job, and looks far more professional that applying it in excess.

My house was built in the 80s and every room has popcorn ceilings except the kitchen and bathrooms. While it was a 'thing' back then, the filth that accumulates in them is disgusting. I can't imagine what they would be like in a house with smokers. Plaster ceilings with classic designs have their place, but popcorn ceilings should be banned.

Probably because this is a DIY learning channel and teaching amateur homeowners how to use stilts is just a bad idea.

skim coat, and get yourself a big 9x9" circular pole sander to get a smoother more level finish.

It amazes me how many people get triggered by watching an informational video on something they don't like and then have to post about their overreaction and their intent to unsubscribe. It's like they zero'd in on one aspect of the information and didn't exactly get the entire message. Had they listened, they would have realized that you're posting this video today, to eventually teach them how to paint it and then remove it because there are many viewers out there who need that information more than the people who actually want a popcorn ceiling.
I'm in the camp that doesn't have popcorn ceilings, nor do I like them, so this video adds nothing for me other than information I can store in my mental toolbelt. Yet somehow, I don't get offended by seeing this type of content. It's almost like there are some viewers out there who feel the world has to revolve around their personal situation and if they see something that doesn't meet their own criteria, it becomes highly offensive to them. I don't know, I just don't get it. If you don't like the content of the video, don't watch and move along with your life and you'll have a much better day.
    Cheers Jeff.

I want to remove my popcorn... But now that you say it's there to cover imperfections, how do I know if removing it is the right move?

    • @AustinMovies

Let me share my experience removing popcorn ceiling. First of all make sure you get it tested for asbestos before you attempt to remove it. So... Me and my friends removed the popcorn ceiling throughout my entire apartment and we found out that the ceiling was a concrete slab which at first seems like it would be easy enough to paint over and call it a day. Turns out the concrete had a bunch of pin-sized air bubbles all throughout which made painting it not possible. We then had to skim coat the entire ceiling with plaster which is not easy. We ended up getting air bubbles that resulted in holes larger than the holes we initially tried to cover. After finally finishing we didn't do that great of a job. We had to clean the spackle off the walls and carpet. And we had to sand the entire ceiling to get out all the imperfections which in reality just ended up exposing more of the air bubbles that were not visible in the beginning. Next we had to prime the ceiling and paint a coat over it with ceiling paint. We ended up missing some spots because the primer in the paint looked similar. It wasn't until the next day that we noticed we missed a bunch of spots and we had to paint again. Let me tell you. Skim coating a perfectly flat ceiling as a beginner is not something that you should expect to be easy. Still glad we got rid of the popcorn ceiling though lol

@@AustinMovies I think I'll get a pro!... Though I know it ain't a concrete slab. Thanks for the info!

@@juncaarle Stick around before hiring a pro. Sounds like Jeff is preparing a series on how to remove popcorn ceilings and it might be worth your while to wait for that one. My guess is he's going to use the technique of installing new drywall to cover the popcorn'd drywall since he's talked about that so much in the past. Way less hassle and less messy. If there is asbestos in the popcorn then there's no concern since you're just covering it up. And if you still want to hire a pro, hang the drywall yourself and just hire the pro to mud, tape and smooth it for you.

I have already removed all the popcorn from my ceilings. Almost all of them just scraped off easily. However one bedroom had paint over the popcorn. The other rooms took a couple hours going slow. That one took three days!!!
