Too say I am overwhelmed with awe is an understatement. The journey you just took us in was magical. Your staircase blows me away. At is unbelirvable how you mad at looks like metal. The building of your rope holding whachamacalits was fascinating. I was overjoyed for you in the beautiful gifts you received. Incredible Artists Books. Tour Captain will never get any work done. You my Dear are quite the Artist and I am blessed too have found you. Still dreaming in Oklahoma, Barb
Thank -You for an awesome creative project; great video/instructions.Can't wait to see what else you do.Thanx again and May we all stay Healthy and Free
For the rope you could use hemp string or twine instead of wool, but perhaps the captain would have a heavy gold silk cord with a tassel...? Love this project of yours & such an excellent staircase. The little books are treasures.
Interesting... perhaps he would! I may have to look at a few options to figure out which works best with the richness of the room. Thank you for the insight!!
Im starting to binge watch this playlist and the first episode about the preplanning has givin me alot of confidence and inspiration. Im thinking of trying to make a dollhouse for my daughter and her Barbies.
Thankyou. Its going to be a big project. Thankfully Barbie/Matel were kind enough to put her scale (1:6) on the website, so that has saved alot of fumbling with maths.
Really awesome! Thank you. I will be trying to make mine out of a white plastic fan that has an intricate gold design on it. I got it from the now $1.25, Dollar Tree! It is for a beach house that has a lot of white detail in it!🏖🏘
Yeah!!!!! You washed them!!!! Now you can use them properly! !! This staircase is amazing. This whole project is turning out to be my favorite thing ever!!!!!
Holly cannoli's!!! I have had a wooden fan that I got from the dollar store forever and ever and I had planned on doing this project but put it on the back burner for other projects because I'm still building my creepy house! The fact that you have a tutorial for it just made my happy little day thank you so so much!
Thank you so much for this demo, i really enjoyed it. Now i am retired I am using my time to start making 1/12 miniatures which I will start by placing them in a room box and then later connect them into a multi room property although i have no idea of period, style or size yet.i have subscribed to your site so that I can find inspiration. Again thanks, Michael 🥀
Just a suggestion from having glued many thin pieces of wood lattice for a project once... those triangular makeup sponges make amazing applicators for glue. Dip a little, then lightly bounce the sponge. Applies an even coat without filling the tiny holes. I got mine at the dollar store.
If you want the glue application to go quicker, you can put the glue in an applicator bottle with a precision/needle tip, and then squeeze the glue on. It's super nice to have
This is brilliant! I'm going to be hunting for fans in charity shops once we can go out again. Those offcuts you had spare, would make good decorative panels in other things like cupboard doors too. When you struggled with the basswood, it was because the grain was running across the narrow strip, rather than along it. A way to get round it would be to make the frame of 4 separate pieces joined at the corners, then you can cut each piece so that the grain runs along it. (or, if they were the right thickness, just use pieces of those craft sticks/coffee stirrers. I hoard those, and always pick up a few spares if I'm in McDonald's...)
I definitely saved the offcuts! They could be so many things for sure ;) Great point about the wood grain... I get impatient and I want to cut everything out of 1 panel and it gets me in trouble lol! That's why I like matboard so much... it can take a lot of different shapes in 1 swipe!
I WAS going to make my staircase using triangular pieces of wood then my friend, @LittleTreasuresbyNancy TOLD me about your awesome staircase! YAY!!! I've started working on it! This is going to be perfect for my Conservatory turned Dark Academia Library! I'm going to try adding wooden beads to the dowel to space out the steps. And adding little screw eyes to the top of my dowels for the handrail. I have some chain I was thinking about using for the handrail.
I never thought I’d have a need to make a spiral staircase, but I was wrong. My plans are to make a two story mini store/upper apartment inside a 17w, 9d, and 24h lantern. Not really knowing what my design will look like doesn’t deter me from wanting to incorporate a beautiful (metal) spiral staircase in my project. Yours is perfect! Great tutorial.
Thanks for telling us where to find those fans. I needed one for an old project and I can't even remember what it was for now. I do have a small dollhouse that is missing a spiral staircase. This is so much more elegant than the clunky wood one it was supposed to have.
Oooh, those fans would be great for so many other things, like grates over heaters. Probably a good idea to have several on hand of those fans... lol Edit: Oh yes you're going to use a rope railing, so perfect for a ship. I should stop commenting and finish the video
I bought a Greenleaf Pierce Dollhouse kit for my daughter and I. I just added this video to my playlist of ideas, as we want to DIY a LOT of the accessories and such. Thank you!!
I love watching your videos, I joined a little late to the Captains Quarters fun. Been catching up on all the crafting fun & trying to follow the story line, watching them out of order as I didn't realize there was a whole play list with all related videos together. I'm pretty much caught up with what is currently available with this project & have thoroughly enjoyed it. I plan to do a similar project but "Barbie" sized and you've given so many ideas.
I cannot watch this. If I watch it, I will be buying a dollhouse, which I am not in any position to buy, having been temporarily laid off over a month ago! I have so many crafts that I do already, like...all the crafts...and I am a sucker for miniatures! I am going to be satisfied with loving the thumbnail and admiring your creativity! It makes me so happy!!! ❤🙋♀️👍
Stay tuned to next weeks video ;) It's a secret project I am working on for those who want a dollhouse but are not able to get a kit! It might be helpful or at least interesting. I am so glad you enjoyed the video❤
I was thinking that the rope was likely to be a red velvet, like you see in the old movie houses. Love the work you did on the stairs. And you are right about ducking your head, and lifting your legs. The hatch are usually (I think) 6-8 inches off deck so you have to be careful that is why they call them Shin Busters. Thanks for the video.
Watching the recent video for this project I was trying to remember how much of it I saw 'live'. I know I found your channel during COVID (with the cardboard house) and I think this is the one. So, I have seen a lot of it live. I have watched all the previous videos as well. I'm really wanting to make a trip to see it once it's at the museum since I saw most of it being built!
If you have any spare fan blades they might be good to make shutters, backs of chairs, stained glass window patterns etc :) Brilliant video and build :)
If you used several strands of very thin craft wire instead of yarn you would be able to form the rope into the hanging shapes you want while also being able to reposition the 'rope' to another shape if it is ever required. This will also give the appearance of the rope having mass.
Here I am again 😉.... This Is AH'MAZING!!! I would so love to be inside your brain for just a day! I think the staircase is very pretty, but the process to make it appear metal could be shortened if covered with Versamark ink and using metallic embossing powder. Embossing powders come in tons of colors...
@@BentleyHouseMinis Thanks a lot to you for sharing your art and talent ❤ Since last Friday I've been watching your old videos, the whole Addam's saga is just astonishing. That turned out really pretty. I think if I was making it, I'd be raiding my cotton yarn rather than my wool, just to avoid the fuzzies that come from using wool or acrylic yarn. Something else that would work well is to take thinner cotton yarns and twist them together just as you would to make ropes from strings. Fascinating construction for ropes/cables etc, because of their countertwist, it makes them very strong and resistant to untwisting. I've been very lucky to see traditional hemp ropes being made at a heritage shipyard on the original machinery they used to do it between the Industrial revolution and 1900s, so for me, there's a nostalgic connection that would make me want to make a more traditional ship rope for such a project.
Great suggestions Rob! And thanks for the bit of backstory behind the ropes. Information like that always helps me make design decisions as I go a long. I will definitely be doing some rope research in the upcoming weeks!
Thanks so much for this tutorial, Ara, it it just what I want to create for a dollhouse my hubby found in the stair landing going down to the backyard of our building. It is a Beacon Hill kit that someone started and never finished, so I will be renovating it and I had decided that the bulky stairs had to go and make space for circular stairs, to lighten up the room. Great tutorial and, like Catherine Koehler pointed out, you are giving us miniaholics a 12 step program to create a great set of stairs. 🏰
I have always had a fascination for all things miniature. So I can’t get enough of seeing your ideas and progress. It’s a very realistic and handsome staircase. Looks genuinely metallic alright. The miniature books are beautifully crafted and all is very impressive. Do you think modpodging the blades would have strengthened them?
I haven't gone down all of the comments, but your marks might have been off because you added the piece of craft stick under the stair, when your measurement was flush with the "tread". I love the finished outcome.
Amazing as always Ara. Being stuck at home l crave your tutorials. Seriously one of the brightest parts of my day. Your talent inspires me. Wired twine
