What's the Deal With Fondant?

  • Those gorgeous elaborate cakes you see on shows and at weddings owe their magnificence to fondant. But don't cheer just yet, because what those cakes have in glam, they lack in taste. Fondant is no buttercream, or even marzipan. It tastes pretty awful. So it's no surprise that it's a controversial matter in cake pop culture.

So some of these cakes, particularly with the green buttercream, are cakes by Natalie Sideserf from Sideserf cake studios. She uses modeling chocolate, not fondant. Different mediums. She prides herself on not using fondant. Check out her channel, she makes amazing stuff without the use of fondant!

Agreed, only a little research is needed to know this. I was pretty surprised her work was featured on a video about fondant 😅

I’ve never liked the taste of it but it makes incredible edible art! Also never new the history behind it so thank you 😊

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to eat my trainers, especially after a hot summer day! 🤢🤣
Amazing skills though, unfortunately by the sounds of it..it's non edible. 🤔

I don't really get why people hate fondant so much, just peal it off and don't eat it

Then why make something barely edible at all at that point? I am a part time baker and future home bakery owner and my opinion on fondant is that its a edible wall paste that pur form over function. The only lame use it has for function is transport and thats at an extreme case of long travel time. I hate it the same way animators hate interpolation and how game devs hate that mario unreal demo in the early 2010's. Whats the point of making edible wall paste if it doesnt taste well with the cake? Not to mention how bad it is to digest compared to other frostings. If you wanted something to look good make an actual sculpture. A cake is not a shoe, a robot, or any thing else. A cake is a cake.

@@Lucy-qj8ui Not at the expense of ingredients that could have been used for more palletable foods like caramel, buttercream for a cake or even stablized whipped cream for an icecream cake with the gelatin. Plus with more effort you can achive similar forms of art without having to use fondant. Beside food should taste well before looking good. Its a literal mortal sin to waste food for something a superfluous as a cake made that is more edible wall plaster than actual cake layers.

@@Lucy-qj8ui Im fine with cake toppers, its just at.
somepoint when the cake is covered in fondant is when its a waste. Also making regluar cakes without fondant is an art for to. An art form that involve not jist making it look good, but taste as good as it looks. Fondant destroys thay notion by having looks matter over taste. There are better ways to make a cake look good while still retainng the quailities of a cake. Royal icing, hardened buttercream, rice paper, even modeling chocolate taste better than fondant. Fondant was never meant to be more than 10% of the cake, it was meant for like you said, cake toppers not structurea and object shaped cakes of harden corn syrup, sugar and gelatin.
