It's crazy that Pixar basically almost made Woody a villain. Deciding not to was probably the smartest decision they ever made. I'd imagine they are now very relieved they didn't.
Well in the creative process characters go through numerous changes and that affects the entire story. It's easy to imagine how it wouldn't work in what is established in the finished product but I'm sure he'd have some sort of redemption arc.
You're not wrong. In Ed Cattmull's (He was the CFO of Pixar) book, he said that Disney hated the test footage because of the mean-spirited take on Woody, and they changed him around after that.
I mean, even in the film’s final state, Woody was still quite malicious in his jealousy towards Buzz throughout the first half of the movie. The only things that really changed about Woody’s attitude was that in the final product he was far less of a bully towards the other toys (and EVEN THEN he was still a bossy egomaniac) He still had inklings of this behavior in the middle of Toy Story 2 when abandoning his friends, but that was more likely caused by his fear of breaking. But in Toy Story 3, Woody is a fantastic character through and through, and that added onto the fact that I had gotten so attached to the whole cast, made the final scene of 3 so hard to watch (in a good way, of course)
@@jakeystarsuper tbf the woody we go was more like a soft villain than a blatant one. His actions against Buzz were motivated out of sheer jealousy which made him do things he immediately regretted. Even at the time it was very interesting cause the main conflicts in the film pertained to the character’s own personal problems rather than a standard good guy vs bad guy narrative that was common with animated films, Sid was just a barely relevant side character in that regard.
Lewd boi what? Idiot. He turned the globe on buzz and tricked him into jumping into the wall to hurt himself and get lost from andy. Wtf you talking about dumb ass idiot that is not the same personality they CLEARLY changed his persona for the movie how can you not even spot the difference LOL
Tom Hanks accepting this role was probably one of the most important moments in Animated history. Woody is arguably the most iconic Disney character who's name isn't Mickey Mouse... And a lot of it has to do with Tom Hanks Incredible voice acting of Woody
The Mandalorian I think the reason (or at least one of the reasons) they scrapped that idea was because the technology to render and animate fur (y'know like the fur that we see on Lotso) just didn't exist at the time. They couldn't do it. That being said though, an early version of Lotso can be seen in Toy Story, albeit very briefly. He can be seen when Woody is testing the microphone for the staff meeting. He says, “Hello, check? That better? Okay, can everyone hear me? Up on the shelf, can you hear me?” He looks up to the shelf when he says that, and a pink(ish) teddy bear waves down back at him signaling that he can hear him.
I like that not only did they decide to not make him evil, but to make him evolve from it. They didnt just ditch this character, they still gave him these selfish/jealous tendencies but made him overcome them and be better. There were many times woody almost decided to be this way but fought it.

It's impressive considering the time this was made, but it does not hold up well today. I mean, look at the cat in Toy Story 4 and compare it to the dog in the very first Toy Story. There's a huge difference.
I actually like this design of Woody. Not only he acts like an actual cowboy trope, he also looks like an actual wooden doll - a Nutcracker-esque puppet.
People say they prefere the version of Woody we got But to be honest, that other version of Woody couldve been an interesting villain or an example of a redemption arc

“This is, easily, the CREEPIEST thing I’ve ever seen.” Edit: yeah I know this comment is old but I wasn’t actually THAT scared of this but it was a little creepy so I was quoting that one scary room Easter egg from CoD
It's really nothing to be scared of. There is no sinister intent, or supernatural happenings at all. It's just early 3D animation testing. Keeping in mind that Toy Story was the first fully 3D CGI movie, it's pretty impressive. Not to mention that 3D animation is an incredibly difficult and painstaking process. Finally, you have to remember that this was made back in '95... Before everyone was so superstitious, and afraid of everything. Back in '95, if people heard you call something like this creepy, you'd be laughed at, and called a wuss.
the scene animated by lassiter shook me. his ability to portray emotion with such ease astounds me. it amazes me how the smallest most minute detail was replicated in his face. even ones we dont think about. that took me away, it was the most realisticly animated face I've ever seen. in awe.

I'll be the party pooper and say he's actually saying "stupid dog". The audio is taken from Turner and Hooch in a scene where Tom Hanks is scolding Hooch, his new dog.
I've been reading a Steve Jobs biography, and, yeah, apparently the first several versions of Toy Story almost got the movie canceled. People eventually figured Woody was way too cruel and changed his character.
Jeffrey Katzenberg was the one who pushed Pixar to make the movie more and more cynical and adult until they showed off test footage when Disney executives wanted to know what they'd been working on, which is now known as The Black Friday reel and it flopped so badly Disney almost cancelled the project altogether. Even now the only footage available online is from the 2010 Blu-Ray re-release and Pixar has no plans of releasing the full cut.
@@AluminumFusion22 Ironic, almost canceling a project because it was adhering to what one of YOUR key executives commanded.... Yeah, Jeffrey Katzenberg was absolutely important for the Disney Renaissance...but in the end he DID need to go.
0:12 He says "I'm Tempus From Morph!" Just to let you guys know. He was originally supposed to be named "Lunar Larry" then "Tempus From Morph" but then they came up with Buzz Lightyear.

We must have faith (believe/trust) in Jesus Christ, and by the grace of God it will lead us to salvation.* "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God." (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) "Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." (Galatians 5:19-21) "Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you-unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures." (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation." (Romans 5:7-11) "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." (Romans 6:1-4) "For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God." "For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For 'whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' " (2 Timothy 2:19) "For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works." (Titus 2:11-14) "For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again." (2 Corinthians 5:14-15) “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9) *That was the Gospel message. While he's Andy's favorite toy, he was supposed to be really stuck-up, arrogant, and a bully. He was the leader of the toys, but rather distasteful (I wouldn't really consider him a villain). After throwing Buzz out, called it a "toy-eat-toy world", he would insult the other toys, who would turn on him and beat him senseless. And originally, he threw Buzz out on purpose instead of on accident, like in the movie. He was described as being "jealous, sarcastic, narcissistic, belligerent, and cynical".
I love how when Woody first gets up to see what moved the globe, he had his fist raised to just punch Buzz, before his face suddenly shifted to “friendly” and warm- it probably just dawned on him that tricking Buzz into getting himself stuck would be a much better plan.
@JonMxwll No, the physics and animation are far too good for that. The only thing that looks “crappy” is the animation fidelity in general, but this was in the late 90’s, so of course it’s aged poorly.
@Brandon Spain Are you sure that it was done before JP? Because, I think both movies should have been in the development roughly at the same timeframe, given their release dates.
Woody still goes through the character arch from being selfish and jealous to becoming selfless and caring more for the childs needs than his own, tho he does waver in this slightly throughout the series, it still shows he is consistently looking after the child rather than his own interests. It is neat that he still has the leadership role because it shows him also grow as one. Truly a wonderful thing...

@@astarteswillum5259I really don’t like this take on Toy Story 4. I think the “purpose” of a toy throughout the series has been established as to make a child happy. Toy Story 4 asks the question “Is that really all there is to a toy’s life? Or is there more to life than that?”
@@drelezar7745agreed, it’s a bit weird given that the first 3 establish that a toy is to be used by a child, a companion of sorts, but it’s interesting and I think gives a really good epilogue to Woody’s character. Perhaps unnecessary but it’s a good movie.
0:35 given that this was a completely new technology and art form, it's amazing how good some of the animators were. This would still count as top tier animation.

I like how you can tell that the animator is very skilled, but is limited by their medium. CGI was an emerging art at the time, so the models look very strange to us now, but the movements are very fluid and follow the dialogue well.

It's because the movie was being worked without Disney's supervision. When "Black Friday" Woody got shown. The movie later was being worked on Disney's Supervision and Restrictions.
Jeffery Katzenberg who was Disney’s chairman at the time demanded that the film needed a more adult and cynical edge to it, this resulted in Woody becoming a dictator and a literal jerk. When the Black Friday Reel was shown to Disney, they were disgusted and forced Toy Story’s production to be shut down. Thankfully John Lasseter and Pixar turned things around quickly and we got the Toy Story we all know and love today!
I think Pixar was originally planning for Buzz to actually know that he's a toy rather than a spaceranger, because when Woody asked if Buzz was gonna fly Buzz was unsure about it, and Woody then mentioned that Andy loves toys that can fly which made Buzz more confident in wanting to fly.
It was Tim Allen’s idea to make Buzz believe he was real. The filmmakers loved the idea and made changes to the script to have Buzz originally think he’s a space ranger.
In the first movie they could make him the villain and beat the end he became friends with the other toys, in the second movie, make him a good guy and just keep him good for the rest of the series.

DOGE VS 3D DOGE
It's crazy that Pixar basically almost made Woody a villain. Deciding not to was probably the smartest decision they ever made. I'd imagine they are now very relieved they didn't.
Ever heard of Black Friday reel? Disney would've disowned Pixar had they still going with the original plan. Everyone there were mean-spirited
Ive always wondered why Mr Potato head is such a dick to him. Now i kinda understand
I mean, even in the film’s final state, Woody was still quite malicious in his jealousy towards Buzz throughout the first half of the movie. The only things that really changed about Woody’s attitude was that in the final product he was far less of a bully towards the other toys (and EVEN THEN he was still a bossy egomaniac)
He still had inklings of this behavior in the middle of Toy Story 2 when abandoning his friends, but that was more likely caused by his fear of breaking.
But in Toy Story 3, Woody is a fantastic character through and through, and that added onto the fact that I had gotten so attached to the whole cast, made the final scene of 3 so hard to watch (in a good way, of course)
Not gonna lie, that "loves toys he can find" line was pretty good. I'm glad Woody got changed to being more likable but I still laughed.
Nah he should've been a villian
@@jakeystarsuper Nah
@@user-jk6iu6lf6b to each his or her own. Not saying I don't like woody now.
he could've been a likeable jerk character
I could imagine this is how Woody would be like if he was bitter like lotso
@@jakeystarsuper tbf the woody we go was more like a soft villain than a blatant one. His actions against Buzz were motivated out of sheer jealousy which made him do things he immediately regretted. Even at the time it was very interesting cause the main conflicts in the film pertained to the character’s own personal problems rather than a standard good guy vs bad guy narrative that was common with animated films, Sid was just a barely relevant side character in that regard.
I'm glad they made Woody into a kind, gentle, selfless toy instead of a toy that just thinks of himself all the time.
Andrea Lewis well he was defending the car from being eaten, so I'd still that's pretty selfless
Lol it's funny cuz some of the characteristics were present in toy story 1.
Andrea Lewis I mean he WAS a pretty dickish asshole in the first movie but he did have an arc and changed so that’s that I guess

*BAH*
Agreed
Well... the most recognizable Pixar character for sure. Him and buzz are probably the most iconic duo of Disney tho
I forget woody is even voiced by Tom Hanks cause he’s such a good character
Don't give Disney credit for such a great character

The way Buzz is unsure of whether or not he wants to fly just crushes me every time

So...I see they took *this* Woody's personality and gave it onto Lotso's. 😂
Huh... never made that connection. Could be possible.
hkr006
Actually, on an early draft of toy story 1, lotso was the main villain. They scrapped him but decided to use him in toy story 3.
The collector How was he going to be the villain? Do you what kind of villain he was going to be?
Yeah...but woody looks weird and fat in the earlier tests
I like that not only did they decide to not make him evil, but to make him evolve from it. They didnt just ditch this character, they still gave him these selfish/jealous tendencies but made him overcome them and be better. There were many times woody almost decided to be this way but fought it.

I honestly think the movie would’ve been a little better if they looked like this. But that’s just my opinion.
Back in '95, if people heard you call something like this creepy, you'd be laughed at, and called a wuss.
it's still funny as hell

Why was Woody so damn creepy...
Probably because of how wooden he looks like a puppet

Because he was supposed to be the villain (and also a wooden puppet). The whole idea is creepy as fuck.
he was originally planned to be the antagonist
The whole movie was supposed to be a great deal darker.

???
He was originally meant to be a villain
I think one of the other comments said something like that. It's honestly weird to see him as a villain...

"Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you-unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures." (1 Corinthians 15:1-4)
"Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38)
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)
"For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation." (Romans 5:7-11)
"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." (Romans 6:1-4)
"For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God." (Romans 8:13-14)
"If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame. "For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For 'whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' " (Romans 10:9-13)
"Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: 'The Lord knows those who are His,' and, 'Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.' " (2 Timothy 2:19)
"For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works." (Titus 2:11-14)
"For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again." (2 Corinthians 5:14-15)
“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)

Woody is so dark in this version
Because he cursing
Buzz is small. And it makes him adorable.
Ikr?
The test animation of woody freaking the hell out is a classic 😂💯🔥
Old Woody wouldn't look out of place in Annabelle or something.

Woody as a villian is oddly satisfying
I love how they made the final Woody still some selfish and jealous but he changed along the way, that's was character development
that woody is terrifying
That woody is gonna be stuck in my nightmares...
Their old designs and voices were so strange
Ikr?
I think Pixar was originally planning for Buzz to actually know that he's a toy rather than a spaceranger, because when Woody asked if Buzz was gonna fly Buzz was unsure about it, and Woody then mentioned that Andy loves toys that can fly which made Buzz more confident in wanting to fly.
It was Tim Allen’s idea to make Buzz believe he was real. The filmmakers loved the idea and made changes to the script to have Buzz originally think he’s a space ranger.
Innocent little child : watches this.
Scarred for life........
I can definitely see how Woody was originally gonna be the antagonist. I wonder how the series would have been if it went this way.
In the first movie they could make him the villain and beat the end he became friends with the other toys, in the second movie, make him a good guy and just keep him good for the rest of the series.
*Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins, He was buried in a tomb, and He rose on the third day. We have all sinned and Jesus died for all of us because He loves us all, and took a punishment that we rightly deserve. We all deserve to go to hell, but Jesus Christ made a way out for us. God's wrath is on those who remain in their sins and do not believe in His Son, Jesus Christ. We must repent of our sins, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and live for Him with the help of His Holy Spirit, which leads us to live holy and righteous lives on this Earth. We live as saints (not sinners) to show our gratitude for the love He has demonstrated to us by taking up the cross. We must have faith (believe/trust) in Jesus Christ, and by the grace of God it will lead us to salvation.*

wait there was a bunk bed does that mean andy had a brother or did he share his room with an older molly

Woody was the same size and Buzz was very small

If woody sat on Buzz in this version, the movie would immediately get rated triple X.
Woody sure fits his name with that look. Also, Buzz reminds me of my Happy Meal toy.
