While I haven't bought an adapter like this and don't have a reason to, it's great to know. You may be saving some lives other than your own. Well done.
Thank you for this LIFE SAVING information. I recently made a set up like this for the same reason but have only briefly tested it. I really appreciate the video.
Thanks. I was thinking of doing the same thing 😅 I now realized the larger stoves in other vids i’m trying to learn from have a pipe attachment AWAY from the heat. Glad you’re safe!
Probably safer to buy one of the refill adapters and fill the 1 lb tanks off a 20 lb. Crimp connections in hoses don't react well to heat. Learned my lesson, was replacing air brake hoses on a truck. The truck was from a hatchery and they used a disinfectant that corroded everything. I cut the hose off and had the fitting in a vice and was heating it with a torch to try and extract the hose fitting from another fitting and the bit of hose blew out of the crimp like a speeding bullet. Was lucky I was not standing over it
Your warning has been much appreciated. The General rule of thumb is to do not have anything less than 12 inches from a double wall, fuel burning appliance that is not flame resistant. With a single wall, that extends to 24 inches. In my opinion, a 24 inch copper line would've served you fine for the feed line.
I have this stove also..your point is correct..the base gets hot , potentially melting or burning the adapter hose..useing a copper tubing fitting at least 12 inches away would work..most newer stoves use this setup..the tank connection is far from the flame/heat..much safer to refill 1 lb canisters..I use flame king refillable canisters..this works because the propane cools the connection as it flows thru the regulator..you got lucky..damn
I've also read that (I think dickinson marine but not 100% sure..If you want me to find it, just ask and I'll hunt it down) it's better that no type of tape be used near their burner. I think this was for the joint near the burner of their cosy cabin heater. Yes, I found that odd too, unless the heat at that point exceeds 268 degrees C, Teflon's limits.
Be careful with the camper stove as well. People salvage them from campers but never install them the way they were in the camper with appropriate venting. There is usually a metal vent that is installed through the roof of the camper or out through the wall. The assess panel works as an vent also. Don’t cover it. Install camper units, stove, fridges and furnaces exactly as they were in the camper. Some setups have both the small chimney stack pipe with roof cap and the louvered vent at the back. Diy’ers often don’t salvage or use these vents when reinstalling stoves and fridges in cabins or workshops. This makes the new installation extremely dangerous. Open flame combustion can be very safe if installed properly. Additionally a (blow back prevention valve) is available at most hardware stores for gas lines. A propane line can suck flame back through the line to the tank in the event of a damaged line. This blow back valve prevents any pressure or flame from going in the opposite direction to the tank. Mandatory in many states and an inexpensive safety measure everywhere. Hope this helps. Retired inspector including propane installations. Be safe not sorry.
The entire propane thing is dangerous in a vehicle to start with. When anyone starts changing the dynamics to make things "cheaper or better” they really are inviting a disaster right into the confined spaces of their car/tent/van/rv etc. thanks for sharing this.
Are you not suppose to turn off the gas at source when not in use? Kind of makes sense that there will be a heat transfer when the connection is directly below a flame
That's funny. I got the same idea as you. Made my stove stand out of a few soup cans. Except mine failed while cooking. Cost me a fire extinguisher and lots of cleaning.
I had the same failure using a buddy heater in a tent trailer... but the stove was on when the line let go. I woke up to a ball of fire, bailed out through the velcro panel in the tent side, reached in and shut off the heater and propane.
@@pattiannepascual the buddy heater has a built-in regulator so you need an adapter hose to run the larger tanks since they use different threading. Same is true on my Camp Chef stove/oven combo and anything else that has a regulator/attachment meant for the 1lb tanks
i prefer not to use direct bottle mount or rubber lines. I like the small square base ones, with hard line and regulator. You may have to prop the bottle at a 45 angle with a rock or digging out dirt, but this makes it very stable and you can feel if the hardline gets warm or not. rubber lines need a LOT of air clearance near the heat source
Damn my man. I'm in home Depot right now looking to do the igzact same thing you did. Buy one of these hoses to use for that igzact burner cause im sick of spending money on the little tanks. In my situation and what I WAS going to use it for.....I'm glad I so happen to come across this video, watching, standing in the isle with the hose in hand ready to buy. Fuuuu@# that. Thanks for the video. I was just looking into getting one of these. Maybe better to just get an adapter to refill to small bottles off the big tank. My setup is more for grid down situations, not regular use.
@@curteouslycook Yup. Found this: th-cam.com/video/g2_GhyAw3vM/w-d-xo.html Their example case study isn't a good one. Sounds like the leak was not caused by a 1lb tank refill failing, but rather unattended an hardware union.
@@Keifsanderson right, they gave no real information why it was actually dangerous. Who would fill bottles around an open flame? I would love to know why this is actually dangerous because I have a bunch of these I want to fill?
Hard to say. The main problem seems to have been that the hose just got too damn hot, which probably would have happened with a regulator. OTOH, at a lower pressure, the hose might not have blown out.
Some propane regulators are designed to significantly reduce the flow of gas if it senses an excess flow of propane. It may not have stopped the hose from blowing off but it could have prevented a catastrophic release of propane. The keyword here is "reduce" as it doesn't completely stop the flow of propane, it only reduces the flow to a trickle.
Same with refilling those tanks, you physically can try, especially with the variety of fittings you can find on eBay they will sell anything; however, that doesn’t mean you should do that. There is a reason there is another valve on these tanks because that is how they are filled. When you try to push gas past the inlet it freezes open I hope you’re not holding a cigarette because once your hand freezes to one of the tanks you aren’t going very far at all and it is spewing at a rate fast enough to cause anything to stick to it. The flatulence of this guess absolutely can be Ignited by the smallest spark including but not limited to lighters refrigerator compressors, automotive air-conditioning compressors especially can’t create sparks. I’m surprised they do not say to turn your air conditioning or heat off but instead they say teacher in the entire vehicle off this is the best idea but who wants to learn firsthand why they say not to do things? Someone has already won that Darwin award if you want to go on ahead for the sake of humanity prior to spreading your seed
This is scary, my ex girlfriend's ex boyfriend lit their hot water heater outside where the water heater is and the burner malfunctioned and he basically lit a blow torch and wasn't familiar with propane water heaters and didn't know, I guess he went back into the house and it was super loud, they run next door and got her dad and he immediately went out to the little room outside and he said the water heater was glowing and said it was like a freaking flame thrower. Always use Teflon tape on the threads, and make sure you spray either soapy water or windex to check for leaks ALWAYS!!

NEVER teflon tape.
Use yellow tape for petroleum products.
