    Butane is more expensive if you buy the canisters online or at many sportsman stores. I buy mine at oriental stores where you can get 4 canisters for 5 dollars.

    A small safety tip scott: the company I work for recently introduced hydrogen detection tape. You can put it around your fittings and if there's a gas leak it will discolor so it's a great additional safety feature that's quick and easy to set up.

      From South Africa... ever consider a Trangia? I'm cognizant of your space costraint but having an alternative fueled heat source is worth the consideration. Trangia run on de natured spirits, are cheap to run, fuel is available everywhere and the stove will never let you down, no matter the temp or weather conditions. In my landrover discovery II budget self done stealth and off grid camper, its invaluable and very useful as heat source, and tide me over when my propane says to here and no more.

      @StaticCamperVan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Warren De jager I’ve owned a Trangia for about twenty years. It’s a nice backup stove. But it’s not a stove I enjoy using. Because of space issues, I’ve found it best to stick with propane as that’s the fuel my heater runs on. It simplifies everything by using one fuel source.

    Many gas hoses are made flexible by adding oils to the plastic. The oils will leach out and clog up regulators, the burners. I have a buddy heater and bought a house that was not manufactured using oils. I also use a trap (filter) on other hoses. It catches the oils that leach out, but they call it a filter, not trap.

    Thank you, Scott, for sharing your research. An issue operators of these stoves need to know is if you modify the valves, fittings or the hose on the stoves those modifications void any warranty on the stove itself AND, more importantly, if there should be a fire or injuries caused by the stove, legally the company may not be held liable for any injuries or damages due to the modifications.

    I took a $25 Coleman camping stove (the single burner model that attaches directly to the 1 lb propane bottle) and drilled a 4 inch hole with a hole saw into my counter and just dropped the stove into that put a couple of screws to hold it into place. Never had an issue. I just open my cupboard to turn on and off the propane valve on the under side of the stove.

Many times walmart has the butane on sale, u can get 6 canisters for a very good price. Propane does work much better in cold weather, but im always chasing 70 degree weather so that's not an issue. A few weeks back I noticed your gaz one and was curious about it... In my van I have a butane stove from Iwatani its the size and looked that I found appealing. While traveling in the US this winter, I did however noticed they are a little harder to find. I live in ram promaster so I store a propane 2 burner under the bed. My go to for finding butane almost anywhere in the Us was Asian markets. And they are so much cheaper then REI or Cabellas... There was another reason why I bought the Iwatani this amazing Japanese cook was using it in his vlogs and there isn’t anything this guy could not cook. Thanks for all the in-depth Info!

    The popular buddy heaters have an issue when using the adapter hose.
    There is a filter that is supposed to solve the issue.
    Propane make something leach out of the hose and the filter catches that.
    I suspect something similar has happened to your gas one stove.
    The filter that I mentioned won’t work for your application, and I suspect gas one doesn’t sell one.
    A good disassembly and cleaning will probably get the gas one stove working again.
    While space is precious in the van, keeping 2 stoves might be a better option if fuel availability is the bigger issue.
    This video has great information, thank you. 👍😎
    I already have two stoves to cover both fuels, so I probably won’t be getting the gas one stove. But it’s good to know about and it’s limitations should the need arise.

    Always use a lighter to light any stove. Your fuel lasts a lot longer because you are not wasting it while turning all the way to the clicker. My butane lasts about thirty-percent longer. I love my butane version, but I also had a scary situation this month. I turned the knob off and disengaged the bottle. I always disengage the bottle, because I have found mine leaking butane before. I was just doing a few things in camp and went to move move stove. It was STILL hot. Looking closer, the flame was really low and the stove was actually still on with the knob off and the can "disengaged." I found you CANNOT trust the disengage lever to disengage the bottle every time. This could have been a massive disaster. Now I disengage with the lever AND also verify the can disengaged AND visually verify the flame is out.

    My camper has two burners, an oven And a grill. In the four years of going on extended trips plus some short trips, I've used the oven twice, the grill once and the two rings/burners together probably a dozen times and all used mainly for the First two years, the last two years I've been using one ring.
    My last trip I didn't even get the 7kg bottle replaced as the old one was empty, I used a little single burner camping butane stove and it did just fine.
    Even at home I usually get away with using one ring/burner but the air fryer is also handy.
    You can get foldaway/pack away oven that sit on top of a single burner then stow away easily, Coleman Packaway Oven (amazon) seems Good to me for cooking a pie, sausage rolls and/or pizza etc the odd time.
    I've recently purchased a tiny foldup caravan 9'x5' and I'm taking out the cooker and gas bottles to replace with a one burner and I'll probably purchase the above mentioned oven as I too want more space on my little worktop. Space is premium in small spaces 👍

    whoa, i'm heating coffee water in my van on that exact same gas one dual fuel stove right now. i did just like you- had a gas one stove but saw this small one and bought it to take up less space.
    i loved it so much i bought another just like it. i keep one inside the van to make coffee and cook on when it's cold out or too windy- i use a butane can for that, so i have no need for a hose inside the van- the butane can is neat and simple and takes up no space on the table. i set up the other one outside on a one gallon propane tank to cook messy stuff like popcorn, and to bake on with my omnia oven, etc. options! 😀 plus, i figured too that by having two, if one stove broke i have a backup- because life without hot coffee is NOT an option.
    i love this setup. so small that two burners now store in the same space i had been storing one. i have had them well over a year without issue. the chrome looking burner grate cleans way easier than the other gas one burners i've had, and they still look good, which was a problem i had with my last gas one burner- impossible to clean.
    so apparently i got lucky with the quality, since you demonstrate that it's not always up to par. good thing i have two, so that if i develop problems with the hose i have a spare. i wonder exactly what the problem is you were having with the hose? i have been leaving mine hooked up to the propane tank outside without issue- until recently. i've been thinking maybe i have a bad batch of propane, because the flame is sort of not really sputtering, but making puffing noises like it is. sorta like the wind is hitting it when it isn't... huh.
    anyway, coffee time! have a great day!

      I’d recommend you order a spare regulator hose now. Gas One ships them for free. Just buy from their website and not Amazon.
      I really shouldn’t have given away the old one!

    My Gas One is operating fine after a few years. I, like you, don’t have much room in my van, so the stove gets stored away after each use. I guess that’s a good thing because I disconnect the propane each time. Question for you: How long does a 1lb green propane bottle last you? I hear people complaining about always having to buy more propane. One 1lb propane bottle lasts me about a month. That is coffee every morning and oatmeal about every other day, then usually dinner a few nights a week. I carry 3 bottles in my van.

    • @StaticCamperVan
      @StaticCamperVan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great to hear. I don’t want to give the impression that Gas One stoves aren’t great quality. You’re proving that if the stoves are used correctly, they will last for years.
      I can get as long as six days out of a 1lb propane bottle. But usually get much less.
      With this new stove, I am back to using my 2 1/2 gallon refillable propane tank. With bulk propane sold for about $3 a gallon and the 1lb green bottles $4 a piece in this area, I’m happy to not have to buy the little bottles anymore.

    I use the BBQ size bottle (20 lb.) and buy propane for $3.99 per gallon. I have an old 2 burner Coleman Stove that worked with white gas but I use it with an adapter for propane. I also have a single burner propane stove that still works great that I have had for 50 years. On your stove that was not putting out flame on one side I would recommend blowing out the burner head from the out side with compressed air. If it was putting out propane from the dead side a lighter would show it up and burn it.

      I have a much more reliable stove now. Although, last year Gas One replaced the pressure regulators that ship with their stoves to a better design after having so many customer complaints. From what I’ve heard, the new regulators have solved the problem. But I’m going to stick with my current stove for now: th-cam.com/video/lsCcbvDp4ns/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZFZWaQKuobMjHcsG

    I recently purchased a Coleman single burner butane stove for my minivan. I was tossed between a two-burner or single but could not justify whether or not or how often I would use two burners at one time, except for when I make posta, that would prob be the only time I need two.. for the sauce and posta. I went with a single burner. But I'm glad I learned about the points you made in this video. But, I did stock up on butane and propane because back in mid-March, stores were depleted of both gas bottles. So I keep a stock pile in my minivan, but I wonder and worry if they are safe in a hot van. Anway. thanks for your video, enjoyed it.

      Butane was almost impossible to find in my area during the lockdown. But, propane was plentiful.
      I’ve had several butane canisters leak gas in hot temperatures. Now, I never keep butane in my van in the summer.
      There’s a trick for cooking pasta. I did a video about it a long time ago. Put the pasta in a wide skillet and cover with Cold water by about a half inch. Bring it to a boil then turn down to a simmer. When the pasta is cooked, almost all the water will be absorbed. I never boil pasta in a large pot anymore.

      What I do if I’m using commercial/canned pasta sauce is after I dump the water is I just add the sauce to the pasta (which heats it up well enough for my liking, anyway). It’s already pre-cooked, and generally they are “heat and serve”.
      I like that tip about using a wider skillet to avoid the issue of having to dump boiling water, thanks!

    The rubber hose seeps out oils and it does it randomly, but over time it will gunk up the stove. It is a minuscule amount when hooked to a propane tank. You should have added a filter on the hose, like the filter for a Mr.Buddy heater. We use a filter on our table top smoker, no problems, we did not use it on the Mr.Buddy heater and it done the same as your one Butane / Propane dual fuel stove. We found videos that show how to clean the heater.
    I am quite sure this is what happened to your stove.
    The reason: The Mr.Buddy heater done the same issue.
    First would only light with a striker torch.
    Then would randomly not stay lit or only partially light after lighting it.
    We could even smell the extra propane gas is was releasing.
    On the Mr.s Buddy heater we have, it is a metal tube that gets build up in it.
    We will have to clean it with denatured alcohol or mineral spirits.
    We will have to dismantle the heater to extract that tube to clean it.
    I have no idea how to clean that dual fuel stove you had issues with.
    I am pretty sure there will be some tube that the oil gunks up.
    You will have to figure out how to remove and clean it and that should fix it.
    I watched about 25 videos on stoves and heaters to discover what was going on.
    Just like that valve breaks if you leave the propane pressure on it after it is off.
    The same pressure on that rubber hose slowly forces the hose to release oils.
    It is a rubber hose and rubber hoses have oils in them.
    I mean oils in the rubber fabric of the hose.
    We now stock three or four extra filters.
    We found them at Tractor supply and at some Ace Hardware.
    The filter on our table top smoker has lasted about two years.
    It is still not clogged and so we have not replaced it.
    When the filter needs to be replaced, it will be so clogged it no longer let gas through.
    Hope This Helps.
    As I said, the Mr.Buddy heater done the exact same as your stove.
    Stopped lighting unless we lit it with a lighter stick.
    Then eventually would not fully light, even with a stick lighter.
    Eventually we had to stop using it.
    I have yet to dismantle it and clean it.
    We purchased two new Mr.Buddy heaters to use with filters.
    No issues on any heater or the smoker where we have the small filters on them.
    There are videos on TH-cam on how to clean our heater.
    I have watched them several times.
    It maybe you can not use that filter on that stove.
    It has to be hooked to our smoker or to our heaters.
    The hose has to go into it and it attached to the heater or smoker.
    It can not be the filter, then the hose to the stove or smoker.
    If it is not after the hose, it wil not catch the hoses leaked oils.

      You won’t have any issues. This stove is a good combination of quality and price. The only reason I had an issue was from using a bulk propane tank which the included propane regulator was wasn’t designed to handle.
      If you’re using isobutane canisters, you’ll most likely get years of service out of the stove. If you do use propane bottles, simply disconnect them after use.

    The dual fuel stove has an adapter that fits the valve used by the 1lb propane cylinder, not the regular QCC1 valve used by a regular 5 to 40lb propane tank. Buy a power generator instead. That way you can use gasoline which is available everywhere. You can use a 700 w microwave for cooking (especially steaming with some plastic steamer) and you can use a low wattage rice cooker for cooking rice, soup or steaming or boiling water. It is also much safer. A high power rechargeable power station allows you to save the electricity from your generator and run a low wattage rice cooker (about 400w) and other electronic device.

      @StaticCamperVan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I have my propane under my bed as well. I keep it right next to my floor vent. Propane is heavier than air. My idea is any leaks with fall down through the floor vent. It’s one of the many reasons why I have a floor vent and never close it.
      I’ve never had any trouble with propane. But I have experienced several butane canisters leaking in hot weather. My personal opinion is that propane is generally safe. We just need to keep an eye on the hoses because they do wear out. Propane hoses are the weak point and should be replaced regularly.

    Good job on the valve, BUT, really bad troubleshooting on the failing stove. The fact it wasn't igniting should have told you the Piazo was dirty and grounding out. And the fact the Piazo was dirty should have told you the reason why part of the stove wasn't lighting was because it too finally got dirty (and clogged), and NO, unburned gas was not coming out. It was being redirected out the open holes. In other words - a really good cleaning would have fixed all those problems. No matter how careful you are all camping stoves eventually build up crud in its openings. Stuff splatters. 99% gets cleaned up, but that 1% gradually builds up. There is no other reason some ports produce flame while other ports do not. They are clogged.

      The Jetboil stoves look good. But I didn’t like the proprietary pots and pans. I bought an MSR and really like it.

    I just bought one of the mini Gas One's (white face, silver top) ...
    on my first can of butane (about 10 uses in) it now won't light with the ignitor. I have to light it with a cigarette lighter and then it burns an orange flame producing soot all over the cookware

      Sorry to hear you got a bad one. I gave up on the cassette stoves and switched to a cast iron camp stove.

      @@StaticCamperVan It's not bad. They just get dirty VERY easily. I did let it sit outside for about 4 nights now.
      I just took an air compressor and blew it out really well and it lit back up with proper FULL combustion. Maybe it's the high humidity here in Missouri. From now on though I will keep it in the case when not in use.

    My GasOne single burner came with those hard, metal connection 'hoses', instead of the flexible style hose you are holding.

    Was the air fuel mixture off causing the uneven flame around the burner ring? The is usually an adjustment to adjust the mix. Just a thought.

      Ace Hardware and Sportsman’s Warehouse stock adapters. Camping World carries them, too. But I’ve had better luck at Ace.

    Haven't read through all your comments so perhaps someone already asked you as to why you used Teflon Tape intended for water connections (the WHITE tape)? Gas connections, as in your application, should be using the proper Teflon Tape intended for gas connections ( the YELLOW tape)? Water molecules are relatively larger so the white tape is impervious to them while gas molecules are smaller requiring more restrictive Teflon, the yellow tape.

    • @StaticCamperVan
      @StaticCamperVan  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All those hoses get replaced every six months to a year. I use fresh teflon tape each time. If I intended to keep the hoses longer, I would use the yellow tape

    • @williamfuller2389
      @williamfuller2389 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@StaticCamperVan The difference between the White and Yellow Tape is not durability and longevity, it's all about the level of imperviousness. To prevent water leakage, use White. To prevent gas leakage, use Yellow. It's that simple.

      @@StaticCamperVan You also neglected to explain why there is a "proprietary" regulator hose when switching over to propane. Propane is stored at a much higher PSI than butane. Their hose is designed to lower the propane PSI down to the PSI used for the butane bottles. The stove has it's own regulator to again, reduce the PSI further for use in the stove operation.

    Burning anything inside a small space like that is dangerous even if it does burn fuel efficiently because you're burning up the O2 in an enclosed space. You're really better off using an electric stove--an induction burner if you really need to cook inside, but that requires power. The alternative is to cook outside if you really need to burn fuel to cook.

    I have to pack away my dual fuel stove after each use, so the hose does get disconnected when I use propane. However, I've had the occasional brain fart where I start unscrewing the hose at the stove instead of the tank, and propane shoots out. Doh. Also, I have the door open at least a crack when I use the stove.

    These dual fuels gas one stoves are sold out, but the non dual fuel versions are available. A standard propane to butane hose wouldn't work?

    • @StaticCamperVan
      @StaticCamperVan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might. The stoves have an internal pressure regulator that will stop the flow of gas if the flow is too high or too low.
      Even though I like these stoves, I gave up on them and found a more reliable option: th-cam.com/video/lsCcbvDp4ns/w-d-xo.html

    Good detail, thanks. I'm curious; after you figured out to put a gas valve in line with your hose, why did they fail (if I understood you correctly)? Having to turn off the valve seems an acceptable method to be able to use both sources of fuel.

    • @StaticCamperVan
      @StaticCamperVan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using the shut off valve definitely prolonged the lifespan of the regulator hose. But I don’t believe the regulators are designed to be used with bulk propane tanks, which is what I normally use.
      I experienced fewer problems with the regulator when I used the green one pound propane canisters.
