Your First Light Setup (in 3 steps) | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

  • “How do I start with flash?” is a question almost every portrait photographer asks at some point. If you’ve just bought a Speedlight or you’re looking for a simple lighting set-up that works every time, Gavin Hoey has the perfect answer for you.
Using just a single Speedlight (or flash) and a small softbox, Gavin will take you through his three steps for simple but beautiful portrait lighting. First, he’ll set up his camera so it sees just the flash, then he gets the softbox super close to his model, and finally, he controls the background brightness by moving or feathering the light.
The best lighting setups are those that are also adaptable, so Gavin throws in a little extra excitement by adding a small fan. In doing so he shows how a simple twist can make your first lighting setup look like a professional studio shoot.

Gavin Hoey videos are gold for any photographers - perhaps platinum - or gold+platinum. Just watch them. All of them. And if you're an experienced professional? Well, watch through each and try to be the first to find any mistakes (you likely won't find them, but prove me wrong).
    Keeping it simple. Awesome content.

This is absolutely one of the best tutorials on creating a portrait ever made. Thanks for keeping it simple and displaying your settings along the way. Thanks for not representing selling out for a specific product which takes away from the tutorial. Some of your viewers can’t afford some of that equipment.

Hi Gaven - I've followed you for years, and enjoy (and learn from) your tutorials. However, I do have a point I'd like to bring to your attention about your use of the phrase "flash sync speed" which you used in the context of this tutorial. It seems to imply that 1/250, or whatever speed their camera manual lists, is the ONLY shutter speed that will sync with flash. Obviously, this is not the case, as any shutter speed slower will also sync with flash. I believe if you inserted the term "MAXIMUM" sync speed instead, it might be better comprehended by your viewers that there are other slower speeds, but, case in point, in order to better darken the room, it is best to utilize your camera's "maximum" sync speed.

Like always a very informative and well done video.
I'd like to ask you a question about your flash settings in a lighting setup like this: you talk about the small diffusion pannel, but you don't talk about the zoom parameter that we can find on many speedlight. Does this zoom parameter have an impact on the whole lighting, should it be set to the focal length of the lens you use or to the widest value possible?
