Kick out the 2 Senators for each state rule. If a state doesn't pay more to support the Federal Government than the government gives that state to subsidize running it, maybe there should be a penalty. Say, losing their Senators. They could still be represented in the house, but by how much they contribute, not just by how many people live there, that are feeding on the teat of the Federal Government.
At least the Mayor and City Council see being "broke" as a BAD thing ... as opposed to the Federal Government that appears to think it is fine and dandy to put our future generations in HUGE debt. Last year our debt payments were over $600B. What could we have done with that money ... if we were not in so much debt?
Cities and States don’t have the luxury of printing more money like the Federal Government does. All they can do is cut things out of the budget which never gets done or raise taxes which they excel at doing. At least this mayor isn’t holding the taxpayers hostage by threatening to cut back on police and firefighter protection, like most mayors do. He specifically said those services must be funded.
There is an important difference between local and national debt. The federal government has a product to sell that no one else has. It is a very successful and highly sought after product - the dollar. The federal govt has never defaulted. It is unique that way. It is the safest investment in the world. People have to understand this. It is the source of our wealth even after we allowed manufacturing to move off shore. We will be in a world of hurt if some politicians allow us to default. Economics is complex but it is critical that we the voters understand.

They need to follow Argentina's example and cut cut cut. Huston has entire depts that could be cut without impacting city services. Examples: The Office of Economic Development, and The Mayor’s Office of Trade and International Affairs, plus anything to do with DEI.
The simple fact is the city doesn't have the fortitude to raise taxes on industry. Even though many cities in Florida are experiencing financial woes (mostly from people up north moving down here), many have chosen to pass the bill on to people who don't live there.......tourists. That's why we don't have a state income tax and we have cheap property taxes. Houston could just as easily do the same thing by taxing it's largest industry, the petrochemical industry. Another idea would be to put an extra $1.00 surcharge to every passenger who flies through George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport. In 2023 there were 60,100,560 who flew through there; that's $60 million right there every year. Yes, people living in Houston that fly out might pay an extra buck, but so is the passenger seated next to you who may be from Yeehaw Junction, Florida (yes, that's a real town).
This was an inevitability due to how Houston has been developed since the 50's. The only things that staved it off so long was its growth and outside funding from the state and feds. Now that the expenses have outstripped the income from new growth and the outside money is drying up, Houston is going to have to start changing how they spend and how the city itself is built before things start to spiral out of control.
@@cba4389 no it's actually pretty basic concepts. Cities are funded primarily by property and land value taxes. The largest expenses any city or town has are the ongoing maintenance costs and construction of infrastructure. Those costs directly correlate with the amount of land that the infrastructure supports. If the property and land taxes throughout the municipality don't generate more revenue than the ongoing maintenance and the replacement costs let alone providing enough money to run services like Police or Schools then the city will not be able to sustain itself. Things like growth can mask the problem, but that growth comes at the cost of new infrastructure. If the new growth has the same issues as the old, then after a while the ongoing maintenance costs exceed the increased revenues from growth. That is the predicament Houston and many other cities are or are going to find themselves in. The vast majority of the city is made up of low density development patterns that don't financially support themselves due to their maintenance costs. Add to all of that any of the other spending issues that the city has and it's an inevitability that at some point, the city would start seeing shortfalls.
I lived in Houston for twenty years. I'm so glad I am out of there. Typical Democrat stronghold that is mismanaged and on the decline. Corruption needs to be addressed.
First, reduce all elected officials' pay to $1.00 (annual) - no travel or reimbursements either, freeze all city salaries, no new appropriations unless a cut in another area is obtained, and continue the across the board cuts (but at 2% per year) - until the budget is balanced. Zero thought required - a brain-dead method for a brain dead situation.
I'm certain that the cuts will apply to the majority of city employees. So, if you have to cut across the board why are there exceptions, cut across the board.

@@inezjackson2244Texas’s budget is separate from the Houston city budget. Texas cities are blue majority. ….but the state votes red. They both have their own separate budgets and accounts.
The citizens of Houston voted for the firefighters to have collective bargaining because they had not been given raises through more than at least 3 different administrations. Turner did not want to honor the agreement so the fighters had to fight him in court. He kept losing and then appealing the verdicts. He put the city in this situation do to his unwillingness to negotiate. The current mayor was fortunate that the firefighters were willing to settle for almost half of what they were owed. I commend Mayor Whitmire for his willingness to sit down and negotiate a settlement. The citizens need to know the real story of how former democratic mayors took advantage of firefighters. The firefighters pension is one of the strongest in the state because it is run by firefighters mostly! The citizens of houston should be thankful that the firefighters have been so successful in running their own pension system which ultimately cost the city less money. I'm a former resident and property owner of Houston. The really sick thing about Houston is that property owners must pay extremely high taxes, not only to support the failing school districts but to pay for over-the-top sports facilities --- all for the benefit of private corporations which own the sports franchises. Let those corporations pay for their own facilities! Also, if only property owners are going to be required to pay let them be the only ones to vote on whether to fund the sports facilities! I never used those facilities yet I paid thousands of dollars more in property taxes each year to pay for them. I'm a 6th generation Texan but would never live in Houston again because of its exorbitant property taxes.
@emperorlondomollari5511 never said that, but in the big scale the federal government Durant limit what the states can pay, only what they can tax. That's why you have these football coaches at some schools making 7 figures. Bring in a cap, plus a surplus of regulations and you can get a pretty good amount in excess funds that the state has to re adjust or put somewhere. With a smart state government, hopefully into bettering the city first before making attractions.

It's not a bad thing for the Democrat Mayor, he gives millions to the Democrat firefighter labor union who contributes to his campaign.

Do the Republicans have a magic wand? Republicans drove up deficits to record levels.
The admission that we’re operating in the red is the most honest news I’ve heard from my local government. Why is that lady asking about metro so afraid, should she be investigated?
She's afraid that the gravy her constituents rely on is going to stop. Can't have that.
They're not going to get much of anything from metro. I've seen countless times metro not enforcing fair collection (or any of their other rules) they can't raise the fair rate either with the busses showing up whenever they feel like rather then keeping to schedule & that's when they're not broke down because they either can't keep good mechanics or don't want to spend the $ on proper repairs.

How can a city surrounded by many oil refineries, Firestone, Goodyear tire plants, and different chemical plants, be broke?
They don't tax industry much if at all. This is why lots of industry comes to TX.
@@michaelsix9684 Well if they`re broke, maybe they should.
Democrats.
It's simple, the refinery industry is outside Houston's domain. Pasadena, Laporte, Baytown, Texas City etc.
Your statement lacks any substance. Just empty fluff yapping.
@@travisbeagle5691 Cities like NYC with high density city design are doing way worse. The maintenance for the transit system is a huge drain as well.

Let those corporations pay for their own facilities! Also, if only property owners are going to be required to pay let them be the only ones to vote on whether to fund the sports facilities! I never used those facilities yet I paid thousands of dollars more in property taxes each year to pay for them.
