    So, basically this is a 'You can't go wrong with Evans' video lol. I thought they all sounded nice in their own respects and you gave a fine representation of each. Very well done, sir! I'm sticking with the G1s, but saving your video as a reference for when I need a different flavor. By the way, Onyx= ahn-icks ;) , like the silicate normally possessing black bands.

    #1 for me was the EC2. What can I say? I'm a 90s kinda guy, and EC2s bring out the lows and the attack at the expense of some character and mids, and that's what sounds good to me. #2 would be the G2 coated. They've got just a bit of the old-school drama that I liked on the G1, but with a bit more control. #3 is Onyx. It's just a cool sound. A little bouncy perhaps. I bet they project like crazy.
    BTW, I don't pay that much attention to the mic/trigger sounds. I concentrated more on the room sounds because I'm a hobbyist on drums, and I mostly gig and record on other instruments. I'll jam with my friends, and I'll record using a 1-3 mic setup, but I'll seldom mic the toms separately.

    • @drumteacher43
      @drumteacher43  ปีที่แล้ว

      EC2 is a great choice! Clear G2 is my go to head especially on the bass, really great attack bounce and feel. Double kick especially it feels good. If you watch my video about swapping out heads for the g2 on my kick drum it will explain more.

      I would recommend evans coated G1 or G2. You want a nice resonant sound with some reverb added in and these heads will do the trick for your style of music. I’m going to do a tuning video soon so that will help too. Don’t tune them to high and ringy. more medium descending in 3rds from small Tom to floor Tom! Hope this helps. 🥁😀

    I’m currently playing Evans and I love them so much, I’ll always love Remo, but Evans has the sound I was really looking for. I play the G12s on top of all my toms, and the resonant heads are the G1s on all the toms, and I use the HD Dry snare head right now but might switch to the UV1 next. I used to play a lot of metal, but now I play it occasionally, mainly play classic rock and pop now and I find the G12s are a perfect middle ground for me. They’re a 12 mil single-ply as opposed to a 10 mil, and they’re amazing heads.

    I use Evans Onyx as batter heads on my rack and floor toms, with Evans EC's as reso heads. Also, have used Evans hydraulic (red) batter heads, again with Evans EC's as resos'. I prefer short sustain on toms, with a touch of darkness, hence that's my current combinations. Evans make great heads, regardless, and you are right, it depends on what you are familiar with on your kit. Clear batter heads, to my ear, sound abit brighter and plastic. As a side note, Onyx is pronounced on-nix, like the colour, and gem stone. Anyway, interesting video, thank you.

    Wow! Thanks Tim for making such an extensive video! I was sold on the coated G1 immediately after you started playing it! I also like that you are playing the Recording Custom. I’m planning to buy a professional kit this year but can’t decide between the Recording Custom, the Hybrid Maple and the Live Custom Hybrid Oak. This video is making me lean toward the RC… I would love your thoughts…

    Hey Tim really dug your demos here as I play the Evan’s ec2s and had a small 13 floor Tom and threw on the onyx since I originally bought it for my deep snare but hated the sound. Went back to Evan’s Hd drys
    Most important question as I loved your fill at the end of the onyx demo part . What’s the sticking and bass drum footwork there ? Tied to slow it down but you sound great with that. Any guidance would be awesome.

    • @drumteacher43
      @drumteacher43  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment. I’m not sure if you meant mic’d or in mic’d for the fill you are talking about out but basically it’s a 4 stroke roll RLR L Foot, phrased as 3 16th ore triplets and an 8th note on the bass. The bass pushes the phrase when you repeat it. I also did RLR L FF. Phrased as 32nd note triplets. Hope this helps.

      @@drumteacher43 They sound like the one you demo-ed, which sounds similar to g2 coated.....maybe slightly more deadened than that. It's not horrible, doesn't sound like cardboard, but it's just a bit more dull than I like. It did get rid of some annoying overtone ring, but I miss the punchiness and free sound of a good single ply head. Colortones are singles, and I could have the best of both worlds with the visual appeal, but I miss that raindrop punch of pinstripes. It's been years. Ok back to my original question, all my Tom heads sound like crap. I’ve been messing with the tuning for 2 days straight now and they just sound right. To answer your 2 questions:
      1 Tom head is not ideal for snare go buy an Evans Coated G2 head this is the best head for the snare.
      2 yes the hydraulic heads will work on your kit, but be aware hydraulic heads are dark sounding and filled with oil in between 2 heads. You will not get a higher pitch or high bounce out of hydraulics. But if you are looking for the wet 70’s sound than hydraulics are it! Hope this helps my friend! 😎🥁
