Too much respect for you, for having to tune every single head for this video haha.. the best video to compare heads sounds so far! Thank you very much!
At the end of the day, nobody in the audience listening to a performance is going to know the difference. I choose what sounds and feels the best behind the kit for myself. Love the Emperor coated heads but they all sound good.
As someone who grew up with Pinstripes (go to heads for my dad) this video clearly tells me why I also really like the EC2s which I've used for a long time on one of my sets.
I like the Evan’s EC2 clear most, on my set I use the the EC2 frosted. I think they sound a little warmer and have little more tone and softer attack. But there is always a lot of „this is what I was told“ what you see in the sound of drums. Have you ever been to a wine-tasting? There is caramel and green apple and you taste the chalky ground 😉 same with drumheads.
I've been drumming since the late 1980s, and I have tried out dozens of different heads (different manufacturers, single ply, double ply, coated, clear, hydraulic), but I ALWAYS find myself coming back to clear pinstripes eventually.
The single hit comparison worked best for me, because the multiple hit comparisons lasted just long enough for me to forget what a previous head sounded like. I hope this makes sense to you.❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️
Been playing since '77 and never used Evans. When I received my new TAMA STARCLASSIC Maple kit I put Remo's on all of them. No reason other than I'm familiar with the sound I get out of them. Emperor coated or clear top, Ambassador clear bottom, Powerstroke 3 on the bass drums.
Thanks for this, im still with EC2s, but very interesting. The Single hits comparison at the end was a Little to quick to follow, i think i Need 2 Hits per drumheads before Moving to the next one. But the shots before wäre already quite Good
I wanted to go with Remo but the prices changed my mind. I went with Evans G2 clears on batter and Evans Reso 7's on the resonant side. Just about every sound engineer that has mic'd my drums has come up complimenting my drums. On my snare I am using an Evans UV1 which was a game changer.
General purpose: Coated Reverse Dot for Snare, (or REMO Controlled Sound)... REMO Coated Emperor for Toms. BOOM !!! Common Reso's for both. (reso's tuned slightly higher than batter) DO A VIDEO FOR CYMBALS...... !!!!! Thanks for all the hard work. 😎👍
To my ears the Ambassador Clear's sound really good. Probably my fav in this comparison. I liked the EC2 Clear's as well and currently using them on my recording kit. The Remo black dots very nice too and def look cool (ha!). It's about time for new heads -- decisions.
Ik depends on the kit itself too. I own a maple and an oak one. Both have Coated Ambassadors on top, and clear on bottoms. Both sound great, but different. Imho single ply heats without and , really get the best out of your Toms.
Must have been a hell lot of work! I liked the Ambassador Clear (using these) and Emperor Clear best. I actually would have expected a bigger difference, though. But this video really is a great comparison.
To me the difference was negligible because I assume the tone was being generated primarily by the reso heads, and correct me if I am wrong, I believe you used the same reso heads for all the tests and only changed the batter heads.
The drums are tuned to near choke territory and lack body on all heads, which leads to a tuning issue. The drums are expertly tuned, but a bit high for a comparison video. I would've went with a bit more of a medium to medium low tuning to let the drums speak a bit more.
there is too much audio processing to allow for a proper comparison of the heads. there is an audible difference, but it's anywhere near the actual difference. Thanks for the video though
only difference is from 1 ply to 2 and maybe on coatings . Maaaaaybe if you account for edges like pinstripes. But you couldnt tell the difference from remo or evans or w/e by ear. just marketing

I like Remo, in times I use emperor coated, then Pin Stripe clear. But I always use Remo. Thanks for this video, I really preciate your work!
Was es für eine Arbeit gewesen sein muss! Danke für dieses Video!
Gern geschehen!
As someone who grew up with Pinstripes (go to heads for my dad) this video clearly tells me why I also really like the EC2s which I've used for a long time on one of my sets.
I really liked the Remo Ambassador Clear, Remo Powerstroke 3 and Remo Emperor Clear. 🥁
Great tuning consistency! I liked the Ambassador coated.
Those sound like wet paper bags. Remo heads take too long to dial in.

All sound good, I tend to use single ply on smaller toms and double ply for larger toms
The Remo Pinstripe Clear sounded great to me and I am a beginner drummer
You have a good ear then. It's subjective, but I've been playing for years and clear Remo pinstripes are my favorite!
Make sure you listen through good speakers or headphones.
I like the pinstripes, too.
I've been drumming since the late 1980s, and I have tried out dozens of different heads (different manufacturers, single ply, double ply, coated, clear, hydraulic), but I ALWAYS find myself coming back to clear pinstripes eventually.
Which reso heads do you use?
He does a great job tuning; if you don't hear a difference, put on your headphones, and you will.

Excellent video. I like the clear Evans G1 for the 10" tom, and the powerstroke 3 for the 16" tom.
I‘m still the Emperor clear guy. Next the G2 clear
Great job!! I know that was a lot of work! thank you!!
Remo pinstripes is what I have, beautiful Tom heads and sounds brilliant 👍
Thanks for this, im still with EC2s, but very interesting.

What note are the Tom’s tuned to? They sounds really good
I like the Evans Black Hydronic heads best. They are all great drum heads, but the EBH heads seem to have more warmth than any other.
To my ears the Ambassador Clear's sound really good. Probably my fav in this comparison. I liked the EC2 Clear's as well and currently using them on my recording kit. The Remo black dots very nice too and def look cool (ha!). It's about time for new heads -- decisions.
I like low & deep sounds ... I choose evans hydraulic black 🔥
what tom mics are you using there?
Ik depends on the kit itself too. I own a maple and an oak one. Both have Coated Ambassadors on top, and clear on bottoms. Both sound great, but different. Imho single ply heats without and , really get the best out of your Toms.
Remo Ambassador Coated is my favorite. I have new Remo Emperor Coated on my tom batter heads and I think I prefer the 1 ply sound I guess. Lol.
Must have been a hell lot of work! I liked the Ambassador Clear (using these) and Emperor Clear best. I actually would have expected a bigger difference, though. But this video really is a great comparison.
with an electric screw driver and a tunebot you cant really cut down the time
kannst du Werte der Stimmung der Toms nennen (Tunebot oder tuning App) ??! Ansonsten sehr aussagekräftiger Vergleich !
I liked them all, but the 2 ply clears stood out the most - from both brands. PinStripe and Emperor are "home" for me though.
EVANS G2 Clear and Coated
Hey,Very helpful! What are you using or recomend to use as reso heads?
I like the first clear Ambassador’s the most but why is the 12” always a bit choked?
I like the Evens Hydraulics I have the Clear they pack a punch 👍
To me the difference was negligible because I assume the tone was being generated primarily by the reso heads, and correct me if I am wrong, I believe you used the same reso heads for all the tests and only changed the batter heads.
I wish you stocked more Aquarian, i love the studio x and it's cheaper that remo or evans
Hey, good one, thanks. what was tuning measures you have used for it - I assume tune bot?
I have 3 levels.
Coated Emperor
Coated C.S. Dot with white reverse dots
Coated Ambassador
What bass batter head are you using here?
Thanks much!...
I’m using Coated Emperors on top and Ebony Ambassadors on the bottom of my toms to record my first Metallica Enter Sandman parody.
7:25 and beyond is all you need for this video. Easier to discern the audible differences between the heads.
Love the Evans Hydraulic Black!
The drums are tuned to near choke territory and lack body on all heads, which leads to a tuning issue. The drums are expertly tuned, but a bit high for a comparison video. I would've went with a bit more of a medium to medium low tuning to let the drums speak a bit more.
These drums sound !!
Is that the copper Drumcraft snare?
Pinstripe clear after all these years. Similar to the EC2 but lets the drum breathe a little more on this kit.
emperor clears or pinstripes. If I go Evans I like the g2 or ec2.
Evans EC2👍🏼
there is too much audio processing to allow for a proper comparison of the heads. there is an audible difference, but it's anywhere near the actual difference. Thanks for the video though
My thoughts exactly none of these are the room sound they've all been taken from the mixer...imo
Clear ambassadors!
Hydraulic Black 🤝🏼
🏀
Remo Coated Emperors
Pour moi , les ambassador et emperor clear
Evans! All the way.
Evans are great!
G2 clear or Remo emperor clear 😊
Remo Emperor, best balance
Remo ambassador clear
Remo Pinstripes
In my opinion the powerstroke3 and the c.s. dots were best of the singles. The pinstripes, ecs2 and hydraulics would be my choice for doubles.
Emperor Clear #1. G2 Clear #2. Pinstripe #3.
Audience would not know the difference but I think from a drummer’s perspective the remo’s sound slightly better
You're not finished comparison without Aquarian in my opinion
bad recording sounds the same
When I turn my phone volume really low they all sound the same 😮
Attack heads all the way
Tuning range is a bit low for this kind of demonstration imo
only difference is from 1 ply to 2 and maybe on coatings . Maaaaaybe if you account for edges like pinstripes.
But you couldnt tell the difference from remo or evans or w/e by ear. just marketing
