    Another great video to help young and inexperienced officials learn what to look for to help with making the correct call..Season officials can also benefit from it..Love the videos, I share the clips with a group of officials I'm connected with and its great conversation pieces especially when we don't agree but we benefit and learn..Thanks

    Josh, great video. On play number one, who would you advise take that call? Would that normally be lead? Or would trail follow the dribbler into the lane? What do you advise?

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The area that the foul happens in is the Lead's primary and even though it is a drive to the basket starting at Trail, Lead should primarily take this call. If Lead has nothing, a call from the Trail is perfectly acceptable as the Trail is following this drive all the way to the basket.

    Question about Play #5. The shooter has picked the ball up, that is, started his continuous motion (7:28) before the defender is in legal guarding position (7:29). Does that make the block call correct? Thanks

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Continuous motion is a factor on whether a player is considered in the act of shooting or not. The point at which the ball handler starts his shooting motion has no bearing on whether a guard has obtained or maintained a legal position. The only factor that would come into play on a player with the ball is if he was airborne before the guard obtained his position. Hope that helps.

    Question, Should there ever be a time when a player is driving to the basket and there is contact with the opposing player and a no call should be made?

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every play is different, however To address your question specifically, most verticality plays involve a ball handler driving the lane and contact occurring, with the defender jumping within their own vertical plane. This type of play usually results in a no call, however every play needs to be evaluated individually and on its own merit.

    Could #2 be a no call?
    Could #3 be an illegal contact call?

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you think the defender "flopped" in #2 a no call could be supported.
      #3 is illegal contact and categorized as a blocking foul.

    If the player control a foul? Which means is it offensive foul?

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A player control foul is an offensive foul. The NFHS doesn't use that language, however, so we try to refrain from it as well.

    1. Defender's feet were moving, block.
    2. Charge, shoulder lowered.
    3. Three is neither a block or a charge. It's a common shooting foul.
    4. Arm extended, making that a charge.
    5. Charge. Legal guarding position.

      @@virom956 feet being wide have no bearing on the play unless contact is made with the leg; then it becomes a whole different story. If feet are wide and defender otherwise is legal, if contact is made with the torso, it's still a PC foul. If the feet are wide and defender is otherwise legal and dribbler goes tries to go around defender and makes leg contact, then it's a block.

      Movement is allowed on all LGP plays, and shouldn't be a factor in legality UNLESS that movement is toward the opponent at the time of contact.
