    Hey Coach, when you were a WRs Coach in high school, what did you start off with first? Did you start off with their stance, did you start them off with learning how to do speed cuts, rocker steps, and snap downs (moves at the top of the route), did you start them off with press release moves, or did you start them off with route running? If I was a WR coach today I probably don't know where to start and It's gonna tough for me to make these WRs great.
    BTW, I have watched all of your videos of when you had NFL and College WR Clips of the route they are running and you broke them down one by one and explained them very well. Those gave me some valuable insight.

      Hey Matt,
      Thank you as always for watching the videos! So I started with stance, start, Route tree basics, technique basics based off the Route tree, press release & then a lot of situational work like zones or disguised leverages etc. Also, blocking & catching are things we did literally everyday for 20 minutes.
      On a team it’s hard to be super detailed because we have a lot of players and limited time to work things so we broke things up a lot

  • @mattpaden2

    When you meant by technique basics based off the Route tree, does that mean you were working top of the route moves off of that or just teaching them a route?

    • @firstdowntraining

      Yessir correct techniques top of the route

    Hey coach! Do you think you can make some running back videos? Not sure how educated you are on running backs versus receivers and quarterbacks, but my friend would greatly appreciate it.

    • @firstdowntraining

      Honestly man I’m just not a running back guy- I would but I don’t have any experience coaching or playing the position. So it’s hard for me to speak from a place of experience like I do with QB & WR

    Hey Coach quick question, is it possible if you can get a d1 offer in your senior year while playing in a d3 school?

    • @chaseonyt2773

      yeah definitely

    • @firstdowntraining

      It’s unlikely even if you play at a D1 school, however it’s possible. I’ve seen it before- at the end of the day your film needs to be utterly dominant. Now, also- recruiting isn’t how it used to be where the only way you can play D1 is if you get an offer in high school. You can always take a D3/D2 offer & ball out then transfer: the transfer portal is so popular and used nowadays

    • @firstdowntraining

      It could be a few things. Just make sure you’re really emphasizing extending on your release and flicking your wrist.

    Hey coach, WR question. When a db is 2-5 yards off, do I always want to bring the line of scrimmage to him before hitting my release? I have come across this problem in 1on1s over the past few weeks where I would do my release but it feels like I should be closer to the db when hitting my release. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

    • @firstdowntraining

      Yessir always want to close space!. This is such a great question, but yes if he’s 2 off- close the space quickly for 2 and then work your release.

    • @trist7563

      @@firstdowntraining ok thank you. Would you recommend like a small hop step to close the distance or just taking a step or two forward, or a combination of both to keep dbs guessing?

    Coach I need your help. I'm about to start my freshman season, but I'm only 5'4 105 pounds. I play WR. I'm so small, and out here in Texas, there are SO many genetic freaks, i;m nervous i'm gonna get pancaked on the field. I'm not even sure if I can make JV. This will be my first season in pads, i've only played flag. What should I do?

I also suggest trying to gain some weight this off season. If you search up “first down training how to gain weight” we have some content there on TH-cam
