Another great set of drills for QBs, emphasizing the importance of basic mechanics. I like the 2 ball drill, which I will start using with my young throwers. In the transition from the prepass position, which I call Lock, to the next phase with the arm horizontal, which I call Load, I make sure that only the toes of the front foot are touching, which ensures the weight is loaded on the back foot as well. In the next phase I use in drills, which I call Cock, the front heel comes down and weight shifts forward, allowing hip rotation to commence. In this phase, the ball cocks up almost automatically. This seems to be effecting in breaking the habit of shifting the ball up behind the head all at once, which prevents an effective sequence of weight transfer and rotation. The throw and reset drill is a great idea, as it will help correct one of the consequences of raising the ball directly behind the head, that is, releasing over a straight front leg and following through with the throwing arm at shoulder height rather than down by the opposite hip. Keep up the good work.
My son is 8 yo and started playing QB his first time this past September. He had problems dropping back after he hiked the ball and also putting weight on that back leg when passing so a lot of his passes hung in the air or it was delivered slow so defenders could recover easier. Any tips on that?
I will make a video on this! Thank you for the feedback- it’s hard to identify the exact problem- could be a few things but I will make a video on this!
Heavy workloads of throwing? I would suggest mechanically - so making sure you’re using your hips properly. That’s why I emphasize hips and legs & sequence so much. And also make sure you’re warming up properly before you throw. I have my QBs do a mandatory shoulder warm up before each workout. If you search up “first down training shoulder warm up routine QBs” we have one there!
Hey coach I am a 13 year old going to be a qb. I feel like I have no distance in my throw and I’m sort of worried about that. If you could give me some tips that would be great. Thanks you and love the content
We will be in 2024! Closest spot that isn’t sold out would be Detroit this year- here is the info below www.firstdowntraining.com/service-page/detroit-michigan-qb-wr-camp?referral=service_list_widget
