    This is the video that led me to your channel. I was searching for an answer to this question.
    One observation: About your subject lines, it would be helpful if you give the version of PD being discussed. It's Fall of 2022 and I am still using V15, with no immediate plans to buy the most recent version. 15 does what I need, I don't have to worry about clouds and subscriptions, and it's compatible with Win7Pro.

    • @SharperTurtle
      @SharperTurtle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I started putting the version of the recording in the lower right corner of the splash screen a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, I cannot go back and edit the earlier tutorials to do that. In TH-cam land, the only way I can change the video is to completely replace it.
      Fortunately, some of the techniques I show are more or less independent of the version. Or they will show you some of the newer tools you can have if you ever want to upgrade to PD Ultra or Ultimate (the versions you own forever) in a more recent version.

  • @wepilotdrones578

    They've used it on the TV show "24" for years. That's a good example

    • @SharperTurtle
      @SharperTurtle  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greg, My example is primitive compared to "24". One of the other viewers suggested using Snap To Reference Lines, and I made a follow-up tutorial for that. It's a more precise method, although I haven't yet found a way to freehand crop videos in a way that I can control the size down to the pixel.

    Super Cool Jim! I liked that last few seconds the best with the 3 vertical videos! I don't know how far back you go but I started editing with the old Editmaker device. And that was a big improvement! But you had to be an octopus, with two VCRs running, a transition effects machine, (MX-1) if I remember correctly, the editmaker couldn't do it all. We've come a very long way!

    Wonderful....such straightforward clarity without inserting yourself into the teaching process beyond what's necessary. As an aside, that stock music sounds like The Who's Baba O'Reilly but not so much as to evoke a copyright concern 😜 Well...I could almost hear Roger Daltry screaming, *"Teeeenage WASTELAND!"* but that may just be me....

    • @SharperTurtle
      @SharperTurtle  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fact that Cyberlink does a 'fire sale' on the current version usually indicates that the next version is about to be released. You can always upgrade to the new version, though I don't know what the price structure will be like. And I have no clue what the changes or enhancements will be in the next version. I will learn that with everyone else when it is released.I can't tell you for sure which way to go to get the most bang for your buck. If the enhancements in 17 are dramatic, then waiting for it and upgrading is good. If they are minor, then saving money with a cheap version of PD 16 might be best. But I simply don't know what's in store because I don't know what the features or the pricing are like.
      (By the way, I encourage users to get the Ultimate version of any package. It's worth the difference from the Ultra package.) --Jim

      @SharperTurtle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your question. Your English is infinitely better than my German. The "Freeform" option was introduced in PowerDirector 15 or 16. But you can do this another way. You can click on the MODIFY button above the timeline and then select the Mask tab. You can mask the right half of one video so it fills half the screen. Then put the other video on another track directly below the first video. Apply a mask to that, but on the other half of the screen. Now you can see part of both videos on the screen at the same time. --Jim

    I am unable to choose the aspect ratios after clicking the Crop and Zoom. I have Powerdirector 14. Which version did you use for this tutorial?

    • @SharperTurtle
      @SharperTurtle  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin, I believe I was using PD 15 ultimate when this tutorial was created. If I remember correctly, the tools available with Crop and Zoom were much more limited in version 13, so that may apply to your PD 14 as well. Version 16 wouldn't be a bad upgrade if you can swing it. Cyberlink has a pretty good price through 12/15, I believe. And Newegg.com runs specials regularly as well.
      In the newer tutorials I am now listing the version of PD that I use on the splash screen at the beginning. Some of the things you see go back to much earlier versions, while others are improvements or additions. It's tough to know how and when to highlight the differences, much less be aware of all of them in the last 4 versions of the program. Hope the variations are not too annoying for you. --Jim

    Jim, got all that & thank you! One more question when you have time please.
    When I finish the Produce phase in P.D., I get color smrearing from yellows & reds even though the timeline clips looked normal. Any idea? It could very well be my loaded down computer too. I have tried just about every Produce option that P.D. has to offer in their Produce section. When I download it to TH-cam it looks even worse...skies blotted out to white, blue disappears etc. Terrible. Could it be my old Win 7 Pro just can't handle the 1080p? Thank you!

    • @SharperTurtle
      @SharperTurtle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bill,
      I assume by every produce option you are trying such formats as WMV and MP4. I don't know how the production format would add code that would discolor your clips like you describe. Have you tried viewing the produced videos on a different device? If you produce a video that is just a color table, do you see the same result? Does it discolor still images as ell as videos? As you can tell, I'm puzzled too. --Jim

    • @billcallahan9303
      @billcallahan9303 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SharperTurtle ....Jim, oddball things happen to me like no other person. LOL. A few hours after I sent you the "color smearing" email, I think I found a solution.
      I take the P.D. produced video, put it into my Movavi editor & use it to Export the P.D. video to make another copy of it via Movavi. I then compared the two. The Movavi version looks perfectly normal while the P.D. version is smeared & terrible. I too have no idea what causes this but honestly, I have tried every produce option that P.D. provides & every one comes out smeared.
      As we speak, the Movavi version is now being uploaded to TH-cam. I'm expecting it to maintain its perfect status. Will let you know either way. Sometimes, you gotta' find a way to dodge the bullets as you well know! Thanks a million Jim!
      BTW: Yes, I have tried everything, not just what P.D. offers. I tried converting the P.D. version to all kinds of options from Windows, to AVIs to Mp4s to TH-cam's requirements, to oddball formats to everything else, to using frame rates up & down, bit rates, to anything, even the ridiculous things. This has been going on for two months.

      Greg, I build my own PCs and have for decades. My desktop unit runs on an i5-2500K (3.3 GHz). I have 16 GB of RAM. My boot and programs drive is a Crucial 250 GB SSD. My video card isn't that advanced. It uses a Radeon HD6670. What file size and format are you rendering to?

    • @SharperTurtle
      @SharperTurtle  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greg,
      One of the great elements in your clip was tension! I kept watching, hoping that you would be able to get it down without major damage. It must have been tough on your arms to manipulate that pole for some period of time. I was glad to see that your solution worked! You must have a pretty good camera on your smartphone.
      As for the video production, it would seem as if your hardware is adequate. (Technically, Intel's i5 is not a Pentium, but in a different class.) I'd have to go on the PowerDirector forum to see if the extra RAM makes a difference, though I doubt it. One advantage I have is I'm running PD15 off an SSD. It takes me about 5 seconds to save a PDS file. I wonder if that accounts for something on my end. I have PD13 on a laptop with an SSD drive and that doesn't lag, though it's not as snappy as my desktop. What OS version are you running?

      Greg,
      Nice that your SSD is 1 TB. I'm running the 64-bit PD15 with Windows 10 with a 256GB SSD. Our setups are similar, so I don't know what's causing your problems. Some of the reviews suggest that Cyberlink isn't careful about eliminating bugs. Hope your friend has some good advice.
      One of the reasons I like doing tutorials is that those from Cyberlink are not the best either. If you have an issue I haven't addressed yet, let me know. I have more tutorials in mind, but would like to deal with those that other users want help with first.

    Hello Jim! Hope you're doing well. Got a question about getting my movie on TH-cam without my giving P. D. Permission thru Google. I've got six editing systems with all of them except Power Director giving me NO HASSLE to get my videos out without having to jump thru P.D. hoops.
    First of all, after I produce it, I get a popup stating that "Cyber link needs YOUR permission to access TH-cam." So I click on that. Next thing I know is that Cyberlink thru Google now needs access to all my videos!
    Ain't No Way that's happening! In addition, their so-called "free music" is terrible & is limited to about ten next to worthless tunes.
    Sorry to haasle you but I've tried everything I can think of to bypass their BS to post my P.D. created video on TH-cam. Again, none of my five other editors give me this problem. Thank you for any help.

      Bill,
      I hope I can be of help. I'm not sure what triggers your popup that tells you that CyberLink needs your permission to access TH-cam.
      I've never seen that screen. I'm not sure why, but maybe it's because I don't use the interface of PowerDirector to publish these tutorials to TH-cam. That may or may not be wise. But it's the method I chose.
      I find that I can log on to my TH-cam channel and then upload the finished file from the directory I've stored it in without any interaction with the editor (PowerDirector in this case). I don't know if this in any way will help you, but I hope it can. --Jim

      @@SharperTurtle Jim, apologies for that tirade! I found the location where P.D. deposits the videos. Last few months have been holy hell trying to make things work. But P.D. state that I have to give them permission to access my video files before posting to TH-cam. No way. However, I now go directly to my video's location, grab it & post it myself so problem solved. My only objection now is their lousy selection of music. I now import free music so problem solved there too! Again, apologies for my getting bent out of shape. Nothing personal was meant even if I hadn't solved all my problems before your response. Take care & many thanks! Bill.

      Bill,
      I fully understand frustration with software! It goes with the territory. So glad you located the place where PD is saving your finished product. That should make uploading a breeze in the future.
      It's clear to me that most video editing companies don't try to be media resources. I agree that the selections they offer for users are limited and not all that creative. They want to get you enough so you can begin to integrate audio. But they are not in the business of offering lots of audio and video clips like Pond5 or similar services. Most of us find external sources to do that. And you have as well.
      I'm glad you're a subscriber here and a fellow learner in this video editing journey. Keep up the good work, Bill. --Jim

    How do I get the aspect ratio to come up I do not see it on my screen

    • @SharperTurtle
      @SharperTurtle  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you look at the top of your Power Director screen you will see some icons to the right of "File" "Edit" "View" and "Playback". The one to the right of the 'redo' arrow should tell you the aspect ratio of the project. You can click on the down arrow to the right of the numbers in the box to change it. -- Jim
