Hey, kids! Did you enjoy today’s video?
My goal while producing this video was to make it as spontaneous as possible. I did not really plan much, and did not write any script for it. I did not want to put too much focus on their sexuality. I wanted it to be more like ‘grandma OK meets this two people who are in love’. I don’t know, did it work? ;)
As you might be aware, grandma OK is a ‘relatively accepting’ Korean elder toward LGBTQ+ community. She isn’t very educated on the topic, but she values one’s right to love and to pursue happiness. Unfortunately, not all Koreans are like her. There are lots of ignorance and hatred in the air toward the community. But I do believe that we are slowly moving toward a better place. And I hope this video will add a little force to that movement, however tiny it is.
Lastly, I would like to thank the two lovely guys in the video for happily accepting my invitation. Thank you, Cheolsoo and Jangho. I tagged their TH-cam channel in the description box. Please check them out! They have awesome content there. 감사합니다! 철수님, 장호님 :)
Anyways, I am super excited to finally present to you this new series ‘Korean Grandma Meets’ on our channel. I hope you will have lots of fun watching my grandma meeting new people and experiencing new things.
Thank you all! Love you so much! And happy pride🌈

I hope it helps spread positivity, acceptance, and education on certain social subjects. I'm sure many people can relate to Grandma OK and have the same questions she might have. Maybe, they might be persuaded to share her supportive view points on some matters too 💛

This reminds me of my own grandmother. She is a lovely lady. I am gay and my grandmother once asked me the same question but not because of ignorance but because she truly and literally had no clue (LGBTQ+ was a taboo in her time growing up). So, she tried to connect the dots and make sense of what she already knows (male//female in relationships). She asked because she wanted to UNDERSTAND me :) and she does!

    • @kp1271

Also considering her generation didn't have the vernacular regarding LGBT that we do today. Those things just weren't talked about or also didn't even have terminology. Navigating queer relationships is hard enough for the people in it---can't imagine being that old and trying to express your interest/feelings in this hyper-aware time.

I basically said, "are you going to love him any less?" He came out to his family when he met someone serious. She's okay, his brothers are okay, it's his father who isn't. He's still not out at work or with most of his family. And it makes me sad that he's in love, but can't be excited and thrilled about it. I've had lots of gay friends throughout my life, but going out for a drink on New Year's a couple of years ago, I realized for the first time how hard it can be on other countries.

Ah... this hits deep at home. I'm bisexual and came out to my mom. Being an Indian, I expected disappointment or crazy shouting that would hurt since I'm really close to my mom. But I was surprised that she accepted me, more since she grew up in a conservative family and higher educations and stuffs weren't available to her at that time. Before that I already came out to my little sister who was like 10 or 11. Both weren't familiar with LGBTQ+ yet they accepted me. Now I was particularly scared of coming out to my father. Although everyone thought that traveling would broaden his perspectives, irl he was conservative and traditional on the inside. My mother accidentally revealed my sexuality and I was scared. My father didn't scream or protest against it but certainly looked a bit disappointed. He knows about LGBTQ+ and never says bad about them although he also doesn't support them. None of my other relatives know or they all would pressurize my father to disown me and I'm thankful my father atleast accepted me.

It's a common misconception that religion makes people homophobic. The truth is that people make religion homophobic.
Just as Pope Francis, the Vicar of Christ according to Catholic belief, has preached compassion, tolerance, and love towards queer people, multiple presidents of the LDS (Mormon) Church, who are Prophets of the Lord according to Mormon belief, have preached the same. But while both of these and many other Christian churches may ultimately condemn homosexuality for doctrinal reasons, they also preach Christ's message of love and kindness to others, and in recent times their leaders have taken especial care to clarify that this includes queer people. Yet in both churches, there are many who blatantly ignore the teachings of their "divinely inspired" leaders in order to defy Christ's teaching of unconditional love and perpetuate the hatred that lies in their own hearts, not in the religions that they claim to follow.
Even today, there are parents who will ostracise their queer children and even throw them out into the street in the name of righteousness, despite their religious leaders expressly exhorting them not to. It might be challenging for queer people to accept, given the many injustices they have experienced in association with religious institutions, but at this point the reality should be clear that it's not religions who hate and persecute them, but rather the ignorant and bigoted people who congregate within them, and who may often rise to positions of prominence where they can pervert the religion and make their hatred appear institutional when in fact it's merely personal or, at worst, communal. And while it might be comforting for some to villainise and anathematise religion for all the hurt that people have caused in its name, it isn't fair to all the people without hatred who take comfort and solace in religion for the spiritual guidance it provides them.
The only crime of religion itself is in attempting to provide answers and spiritual guidance that is attractive to people regardless of whether they have love or hatred in their hearts. For despite what people might be accustomed to believing, there is nothing inherent about religion that attracts the worst of humanity, which should be apparent given that the literal worst of humanity-the Nazis-where decidedly hostile to religion. The only element of religion that could genuinely be blamed for enticing the worst people into its ranks is the promise of power within an institutionalised structure, which is a facet of institutions in general rather than anything uniquely religious. Those who hate others will naturally seek a vehicle with which to express and perpetuate their hate, and will happily exploit a religious, political, or any other institution in order to do so. The problem isn't religion, the problem is hate, and you can find it virtually anywhere that you stop to look.

They think it's funny but when my dad saw us watching that show he got so mad and educated about it like how it's not good to watch that show and you shouldn't make fun of them and stuff. At that time I didn't think much but when in school I saw people making fun of gays like teasing some guys saying they're gay and stuff cuz the guy was wearing pink and one of the teacher even encouraged it. I told it to my dad and he came to school and complained about it. The teachers really didn't care about it much but I learnt what's right and wrong from pretty young age I am thankful for my dad for raising me good. I later got to know he has a friend who's gay and everyone made fun of him when he told about it but my dad didn't and he's still friends with him.

What a great video - thank you much for making it and sharing it with the world! I'm a 68-year-old gay guy in Texas. It was tough growing up, but my friends all remained with me when I came out - in our 30s - and I am supremely happy about that! I met a great guy 31 years ago, and we have lived together happily ever since. He is very patient with me and puts up with my occasional silliness. We were married (in Canada in 2004, and in the USA, too, since 2015). My family loves my husband, and I am thankful for their support of us! I am so blessed that I can't adequately describe it. I arrived at this video because of my love of BTS and its superb members, who have given the world many useful and compassionate messages, including their support of the LGBTQI community and underdog communities "Not Today" worldwide. I first found BTS in 2014 and have since read quite a bit about Korean culture, which I have thus far found generous and kind. It is a much more cohesive culture than America's. Thanks again for making this video! Borahae!💜

@Me Ry tbh I don't think it was anything to be offended about. A lot of gay relationships have someone that is more feminine or masculine than the other, and there are often tops and bottoms. She did acknowledge IF they had those roles, too. (People can switch roles obviously). As a gay person myself, I would just say try not to get offended by little things, especially when it's someone who's not trying to be offensive. I would go so far as to consider myself as the "woman" of a relationship with the person I'm talking to.

@@calypso7636 I think the real problem is heteronormativity. referring to someone as the “woman or man” of the relationship is very weird. I didn’t take offense to what she said (I’m lesbian) since there weren’t any bad intentions + she’s just older and curious, but we as a community should really break down the whole “there has to be someone to take both roles” stereotype in the community.

I’m only 6 minutes in and I’ve been tearing up from the start. Grandma OK is so sweet, the fact that she’s concerned that she might say something wrong is understandable but it shows how kind of a person she is. Thank you so much for this video.
I’m part of the LGBTQ+ community, and my grandma is 86. I haven’t told her (I’m only 21) but with every day I think about the fact that I’ll never know when will be my last chance.
Grandma OK reminds me a LOT of my grandma, in the way she says how handsome they are and would look younger if he lost the beard, but especially in the way that she tapped the hands of the second guy when commenting on his skin. My grandma is now legally blind and has been partially sighted my whole life, so she feels a lot with her hands, especially as she gets older and her arthritis and cancer gets worse.
I miss my grandma a lot, I spoke to her just yesterday and we talked about grief and missing people. I have a recording of a conversation I had with her, about her childhood growing up (in England) at the end of world war 2, and rationing etc. Even though I may not be able to listen to that recording for a long time in years to come, I take comfort in the fact that I have it, I have the option to listen to it, and so I’ll never forget her voice.
Even though Grandma OK is Korean and my grandma is British, they are so similar, even the softness of their voices when they speak such different languages.
I’m sorry that this seemed sad and morbid, it’s just the thought of family and acceptance that got me thinking.
Cherish your family and your loved ones everyone, because they love you so much 💜

This will of course change depending on the person. So just be sure you’re ready when the time comes, and prepare for whatever outcome may happen if you’re unsure. And remember you got this! ❤️

It will be a great source of comfort one day. My mom passed sort of unexpectedly (her health was already bad so it wasn’t a complete shock, but still) in 2014 and I saved every voicemail I had. I don’t listen to them often but there’s a small bit of peace in my heart knowing I can still hear her voice whenever I miss her.
I hope this isn’t too sad, I’m not wanting to be like that. Just wanting to say that recording is priceless , don’t get rid of it. ❤️

Japan is currently in a weird place where people are more or less accepting, but they can't legalize same sex marriages because "but constitution, we can't change it" excuse from goverment (there marriage is stated as unite between man and woman specifically).
As a playaround around that, some perfectures (I think quite a handful of them at this point, but I need to check) implemented partnership system that is accesible to same sex couples, and gives practically same rights as marriage, with the main difference being that it won't be effective in a perfecture where the system isn't implemented yet (unlike marriage).
