The Sixth Episode of the Death of the High Street - Scarborough
Another slightly different video today as I team up with @WendallExplores a fellow TH-camr taking a look at the current state of our country...check out his channel below

He got in touch and said he was heading to Scarborough to make a film and asked if I wanted to join. I've not done a collaboration video yet so I thought it would be fun and it really was.
I first took a look at Scarborough's crazy history before heading to the beach, meeting @WendallExplores and then heading into town.
I had heard lots of bad things about Scarborough and wanted to give a perspective of the place from a tourist visiting for the day. Luckily the weather was amazing and we got to see the town in its full glory. There were a lot of shut down shops, but due to the weather and the good feeling of the place as we were exploring, we both felt like this town is no way near as bad as a lot of seaside towns in the UK.

Great to meet up and film in Scarborough mate!
My home town still live here born n bred in Scarborough we have lost a lot of attractions and shops it does upset the locals and we have lost around 100 historical buildings since the 1950s which is a shame the last building we campaigned too save was the futurist a historical theatre but we lost the fight situated on the sea front not there now just an empty space we will always have the glorious views though they can never be taken away 😊
Scarborough is one of the nicest sea side towns, beautiful buildings, and the amazing beach! I'm glad you didn't put it in a bad light and looked at the good parts because Scarborough is really a great place!
It is i love its culture theatres etc music shops
It's a sh!thole, honestly.
Scarborough is a top seaside resort and a top town. Many(most?) seaside resorts are somewhat diminished as international travel became affordable in the 60s and seventies which diminished uk seaside holidays considerable and still not recovered. Also with this much of the lower classes apired to be middle class and wanted style and 'quality' away from burgers and kiss me quick hats. The faded glory and magnificent victoriana of the British empire was now seen as cheap, tacky, rough, common, boring and unpleasant. Mrs. Wiggins b and b was no longer good enough and now Le Chic Nouvau with chamomile tea bags and French hair shampoo to relax in the 'Mediterranean golden octopus bar lounge' was the place to be. This continues to this day and cocktails in florida beach or Barbados I'm sure is wonderful so many seaside towns are now more degraded or shut down (though some have been hugely improved and invested in, the old sh#t hole of Southend has considerably improved but more have not. With covid locking us away and finances downhill there is beggining a resurgence of British UK seasides and let us hope for more. Even the faded failure of some shut up seasides can be a incredibly chea😢p break from the city and bored stress of modern living in some ways back to a simpler time of greaseproof paper wrapped sandwitches and hot yummy chips in the wind and rain. British seaside cannot compare with Barbados nor should it. Full of beauty, charm and love let us fly the flag for England and St. George. God save the king.
As a person who has lived in Scarborough for the last 13 years I feel that you just touched the sides instead of digging deeper and connecting with locals. We have our problems, but we also have businesses that are trying to survive, local culture ( Stephen Joseph Thearte, the Spa, Open Air Theatre), art community (see North Yorks Art School) and so on. I think you need a new series about small towns trying to fight back, trying to redefine themselves despite local councils giving up on them, doing good things without support. If you ever want to revisit Scarborough please get in touch. There is so much more here than just the sea and the castle.
When I was a kid, holidaying with my family, we'd always go to see Ken Dodd when his show was on. I know one of the theatres we saw him in was the Futurist.

I think you guys should do "private coach tours" again ! We used to have lots of coach tours from Sheffield into those seaside areas... and it was small but cosy, especially over summer holidays or holidays etc. Or to even have like community centres, running them? And then organise it... and that was a great way to get kids out and about, and also coordinated as well....

@@wanderingturnip By what you have shown it still has allot to offer, I am going to see it myself , this is the only place in all your vidoes that seems very nice and attractive for holidays, may be people do not know or the new comers do not know , I never heard of this place before but what I see in the video is pretty amazing actually.... I'm in Australia and we have NOTHING like what the USA or the UK are going through! Truly shocking for you guys. (( PS* At 0:02 in the video it says 10 quid for 1 gram of gold!?? Current gold spot is 51 quid per gram. I'd presume they mean buying 24K gold for 10 quid a gram? If they do that's highway robbery. Cheers mate and subscribed from down under. The Grand hotel was notorious for being full of Afghan families a couple of years ago at the same time as British holidaymakers.
I remember the rooms being tiny and poky but communal areas remain impressive.
It's run by Britannia which is generally always bad news
We stayed there and had a small room but we loved it and it was clean and the grub was great and we went to Anne Brontes Grave😂

I don’t live in England anymore but your channel reminds me of how beautiful parts on England really are, even if now there are towns facing real difficulties and hardships. Great effort to bring the plight of these places to light. Good luck, really enjoy your attitude and approach. Respect
Great video but the UK only came about in 1801 not during the Vikings or anything else before 1801. Just stick to England
@@123bwlch True, But British Unions have existed since at least 1600. The last major declaration of Union was of course 1801 which is the current "United Kingdom". I think Americans get confused over this too, They keep referring to us as United Kingdom when discussing the American Revolution, But this particular union didn't exist yet.. We were the Kingdom of Great Britain back then.

You should come to Glasgow and see Sauchiehall Street - gone from being the city's most famous road to being almost completely boarded up. It's amazing how much of the whole city is derelict, but Sauchiehall Street is on another level
Still a great place to visit from Peasolme park right down to the Spa. Never bored there and of course superb Fish and chips

Very underrated part of the coastline round there with Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby, Bempton cliffs etc.
I agree . Bridlington and Filey too , I must get myself back up there for a break before Christmas.

I had an acquaintance from Whitby. She sort of had an unhealthy relationship with wealth and prosperity, like it wasn't ambition that drove her, it was an internalized frantic fear of poverty. This sort of gave a sort of fatalism, like nothing else mattered but making the next dollar. She was a good drinking friend, but she was understandably very much a bitch. Poor gal. I hope she figured things out and didn't get deported back from US, she was sort of terrified of going back. Personally I'm thinking, there's no way Whitby is that bad lol

My dad was a Yorkshireman and he, my mum, and I, as a child, used to have our annual holiday here. Many fond memories. We always stayed on St Nicholas Cliff, where the Grand is, in what was then the Hotel St Nicholas, now the Travelodge, shown in your video, apart from one or two times when we stayed at a much smaller hotel a few doors down, the Stewart. It would have been nice if you'd checked out the super-posh Royal Hotel, on the corner there; my dad was too tight with his money to book us in there, ditto the Palm Court.
Anyway, glad to see the town's not doing too badly. Haven't been there since the nineties but you've tempted me to pay a visit.

Strange watching this, I went to school in Scarborough and lived there 1977- 84, and can remember a vibrant town centre and what many of the shops were. It is was it is and must the same as alot of towns. Scarborough people think it is much worse than it is, but like the guy said there's worse!

We have beento scarborough over the last couple of years. Love it. Shame you didn't highlight the Stephen Joseph Theatre which is a thriving centre for the arts. Amazing Art Deco design . Also found the Italian gardens, I think that is what they are called,discovered them recently, absolutely stunning!

Moved from London to Hornsea recently and what you said at the end about life feeling more worth living here; by the sea, is so spot on. It’s a feeling that underpins everything else in your day and lifts your mood.
My family used to go to Hornsea for the day in late 80s. We were living in Scotland but had a caravan at Easington at the time (10h+ journey with a touring caravan, overnight!!), and my parents would get us 4 kids and the dog rounded uo and into the car for the 1.5h drive up to Hornsea. We loved Hornsea. Beautiful beach and sea front. I hope it is doing as well as it can given the last decade.
Is the US airbase still there?
Lovely to hear your story. Coming from London, Hornsea feels about as idyllic living as I've experienced in the UK, and the people visiting I meet say it feels like the 1950's. I love that its filled with real community where what you put in, you get out. I half hope it gets the attention it deserves from new people like me moving in, and half hope it never changes. :) @@anniealexander9911
@@anniealexander9911: And for my family, my mom would use the family card as well.. and us kids would just use the 1 pound ticket and make our way into London, to do a weekly shop and to dine out in the local chinatown.. And that would be our holiday trip ! And that didn't cost an arm or a leg either. So.... Seaside trips would be via coach... and only if somebody locals would run them. Hays Travel used to run decent local trips. As well as coach drivers too. And this also kept B&Bs alive back then. Look at us now !!!! All gone Pete Tong !! Should everything or everybody be targetted by analytics? Should every company be on the internet, and actually destroy us ? Should we really have to live in a digital bubble and a digital existence ?!?!?!!..... No !....
Hornsea great for fossil hunting better than Dorset.
I went to Scarborough for the first time this summer. We liked it and the number of independent shops really stood out to us.
My wife and I have been going to Scarborough for years now and we love it we've been to most other seaside towns and we always go back to Scarborough you just can't beat it.

Enjoyed the tour of Scarborough v much. My father was called up for National Service in 1945. After initial square-bashing, he was sent to Scarborough as he had been assigned to the Royal Signals who had taken over the Grand Hotel during the war. There was no heating. The building was so cold in winter you slept with all the layers of clothing you possessed! For all that he had an affection for the place. The Army soon warmed him up sending him to the Middle East.
That’s interesting. Your father must have been the same age as my father in law who was called up at the same time but he first went to a hotel that had been taken over in Whitby and then was sent to India. He had fond memories of both and made regular visits back to Whitby over the years,but sadly never made it back to India.

My mum moved from Lowestoft, to Scarborough because it's not a dead place...you should definitely check out the seaside town of Lowestoft...great video, really interesting! :)

Thanks for taking us UTUBErs along on your visit to Scarborough -- and for quoting one of my favorite John Masefield poems. I learned it in high school (USA) more than a half century ago, and could still say it along with you these many decades later. I had similar reactions to Ramsgate and Broadstairs when I lived there back then, and wonder what they are like now.
Thankfully Broadstairs has improved a lot in recent years, Ramsgate not so much especially the high street but the marina/seafront area is still nice
@@no_soy_rubio : Thanks for the update. I lived briefly in Ramsgate while researching Van Gogh's time there (in a very acceptable B&B overlooking the harbor), and walked along the seaside to Broadstairs to visit, inter alia, the Dickens House. Glad to learn that Broadstairs is improving!
I live in a seaside town that’s struggling (Bournemouth) it’s nice to see Scarborough is holding on with lots of independents, my town sold itself out and now it’s been hollowed as the big retailers left in droves
What seaside towns like this don't need is what's happening to Folkestone, it's priced out locals and focused on art and property development for the rich, forgetting about jobs and opportunities for locals.
I have fond memories of four months spent living in Scarborough in the very cold winter of 1977/78, a warm and welcoming town with lots to offer even in winter.
Been living in Scarborough for the last 8 years. Interesting history and love your drone shots makes me appreciate what i have on my doorstep.
I lived it Scarborough centre briefly in my 20s, in a massive old building. We would watch drunkards scrapping on a Friday night. It’s a pretty place, scenery wise. I love it when you do a relevant poem or verse at the end. Good stuff 👍🏼
I was a Butlins Redcoat at the Grand Hotel in the early 80s for a few years. So many fantastic memories of Scarborough ❤️

I moved from Grimsby and now live near Scarborough, or Scarbados as the locals call it.
I have a lot of love for the town, it's beautiful with some stunning architecture. Poor Cuthbert Broderick would be shocked to see his beautiful Grand hotel in such a state.
When you're hometown is Grimsby, Scarborough is utter paradise.
Please visit Grimsby, it was Europe's biggest fishing port but now a sorry state, then you can nip to Cleethorpes next door to view the beautiful Humber and eat fish and chips.
I enjoy your videos and a chance to look with you at towns I haven't visited. Another point about The Grand Hotel is was built in the shape of a V in homage to Queen Victoria

Great positive and fair assessment of Scarborough ,ive been dozens of times over the years and really like it ,as you said it has its issues what town dosent . but the positives outweigh the negatives, its a very interesting place , you mentioned the fishing well in the 1930s Tuna fish was regularly caught off Scarborough and not tiddlers either the record stands at 852 Ib and The British Tunny club was started in the town in 1933.
Whitby, just up the road, is a massive (and honestly now very likely over-saturated) tourist trap. It's interesting to speculate on why that should be when so many of these places in the north have gone into decline.
Genuinely hate that this has happened to Whitby tbh. I'm Whitby born and bred and it's impossible to live there now because of how expensive everything has become, and lack of housing due to every other property being turned into a holiday let.

I lived in Scarborough until I was 8 and it made my day to see that Boyes is still open. Ive got some cotton reels with Boyes price tags on them still
I've lived in Scarborough for 10 years now and am still struck by how gorgeous the coast is either on a glorious sunny day or a dramatic stormy day. There is a great, friendly, chilled vibe here with lots to see and do. The castle promontory splits the coast into North and South bays. North bay is more tranquil with a lovely park and boating lake and South bay is the glitzy bustling side with the arcades etc. So you can have a silly fun time southside and walk round Marine Drive for a relaxing chill out northside. It's not as good as in it's heyday but there's still something for everyone.
The grand hotel is magnificent.
I grew up having summer holidays around the seaside Resorts like Scarborough, Blackpool, Skegness, morecambe,. Last time I holidayed in Scarborough was late 80s then twice as an army cadet mid 90s. Everytime I visited something else had closed. I still had many fantastic memories of Peasholm park island fairy tale walk, naval base and battle, railway out to the fairground and cable car back. The hyspaniola pirate ship at Mere park. The out door water park. Visited last year with my 12 year old son having told him all the stories. Water park closed, cable car, derelict, fairground gone, Mere closed unless fishing, peasholm island closed off and almost no dockyard buildings but heard from a local that the battle still happens during certain seasons. Railway was still there but wasn't running. I had told my son so many stories about the pirate ship and was so excited when I'd heard it was still doing tours around the harbour. Walked to the harbour to see a tiny "pirate ship" less than a quarter of the size of the one I remember. It wasn't running either.
My son laughed so hard at my obvious disappointment. When I got home and told my dad the ship was now tiny he went and got the photo album out. It was tiny when I went as a kid too. My dad laughed along with my son.

I thought that "Staycation" would revive the British tourism beyond London, but it didn't. It is sad to see such amazing buildings being on the waiting list to be simply forgotten.. I love your content. Thanks for all your hard work
the seafront in Scarborough is packed during the high season , its the rest of the town thats suffering , considering massive corporations moved in very close to the seafront. within 20minutes car drive , most of the shops not on the seafront have suffered the same effects as any Town .
As someone who's trying to start a business in Scarborough as I live here the landlords are super hard to deal with, that's why everything's empty. Shame as there's so much wasted potential for this town
The train fares are the real killer for me. There’s so many places I’d absolutely love to visit around the UK, but every time I check the fares I nope out immediately.
As an example here, 2x Advanced tickets (one out, one return) between London to Scarborough will cost me £118! I‘ve paid less to fly to Gran Canaria 1800 miles away, bags and transport to the airport included.
For those who have a car it might be worth it.

I remember as a child the beach being so full you could easily get lost on lt. Maybe I have rose tinted spectacles in Scarborough but to me it remains a magical place.

I'm from NE England and had a few day trips to Scarborough as a kid in the 90s and 00s. I always hated seaside towns when I was younger due to them feeling decayed and never really gave them another chance as an adult.
I enjoy walks along the Northumberland coastline, but I feel like I should have a few trips further south back to some of the places my parents took me when I was a kid.
This channel is great. You're a fantastic presenter. I hope you find a lot of success doing this.
me and my girlfriend who's from Croatia loved Scarborough when we went last week, although it was windy and a bit of sun she enjoyed the culture and adores the arcades as Coastal Croatia does not have such arcades.

This was amazing guys, big time fan of both your channel. Between the scope of content you both put out it really has opened my eyes. I moved from Blackpool twenty years ago for the very reason that shops were getting boarded up, theatres were being demolished and when i moved to Scarborough i thought i was moving to a middle class affluent town that would never see the same fate as my home town. Sadly in the last year we have seen so many changes here. Many of those closures you passed are real recent ones. The block that has just a one stop on on and over a dozen closed shops is one that has been in the planning stages for redevelopment since 2001, still nothing done. The Brunswick which lost its Debenhams has “plans” for a cinema, about the fifth failed one in the twenty years ive been here. The Council still hasn’t appointed a developer, work was scheduled to start by the end of this year but the few shops still operating inside haven’t a clue about it.
Superb history and its always lovely to see this beautiful place covered with fresh eyes. Sadly all the Council spend money on is tourism and thanks to the likes of your videos my eyes are open and the focus now is on how poorly locals are treated with their high street. 👍👍

@@no_soy_rubiothanks Matt, yeah i have to say that this dude, Wendall, Backpacking with Tim and Turdtowns are my main go to watches. If not for these guys id be happily oblivious to the horrendous state my home town is in. The irony is, they come here and do all the lovely touristy things there are to do as I have since moving here. It was their incredibly insightful videos that made me take a harsh look at my home town and see it for the joke our Council thinks the locals deserve. All the money is diverted singularly on tourism which is a theme in some of their videos.
Im taking a much closer look at the Councils in tourist resorts like this and checking what vested interests each Councillor has on the benefits to tourism or improving the town.
That being said, quite probably no better two people to cover my town than these two, i just wish they had got here earlier and saved me the trouble! Now i have an agenda to find out what each and every Councillor os up to, im not making friends along the way! 😂

If it wasn’t for your channels I would never have ventured into my town centre with my eyes open, i always happily skirt around it marvelling at how wonderfully kept the touristy areas are. Since watching your content and making the video ive done all my shopping on the high street. Its not easy finding what you want and you do end up paying a fair bit more but it is so rewarding.

The Grand Hotel wasn’t the first purpose built hotel, that honour goes to The Crown Hotel built in 1844, the Grand came 25 years later. The turrets as you called them are actually called cupolas, castles have turrets. I’ve worked at the Grand many times, the balcony seating in the ballroom was built in 1968. The biggest myth about the Grand is the V shape for Victoria, it’s built in a V due to the land on the cliff ( the hotel was originally called The Cliff Hotel until bankruptcy in 1864 caused it to be built for a knock down price of £43,000 and he renamed it The Grand Hotel ) being unstable to support a large building, the V shape helped spread the weight out and buttress up the cliff at the same time. The staircase originally had a glass dome over it and was very impressive. I enjoyed watching your video, it was well put together.

@@wanderingturnip In 1903 Queen Victoria’s daughter Princess Beatrice unveiled the statue of Queen Victoria which is in the grounds of the Town Hall. They had a luncheon at The Grand Hotel and this is probably where the V for Victoria came from, you could say a form of PR stunt. This luncheon was a lavish event and took place in the ballroom, their table was roughly where the stage stands today, the wall behind originally had six large mirrors on it.

I havent lived there since 20 odd years but of course go back to visit family. Having known it for so long you really become aware of the changes over time. There really are many fewer shops than before, each year something larger closes down - it uses to have a huge debenhams in the central shopping centre, and a huge and busy Thorntons cafe store - both victims of national struggling businesses. Now all there seems to be are bookies, pound stores and cheap clothing stores like Matalan or TKmax. We used to have 2 cinemas in town, in the 90s i think there were next to 8 nightclubs. There was the huge entertainment area at northbay with Marvels Theme Park, Kinderland and of course Atlantis waterpark. All removed replaced with weird flats. A big issue on the highstreet are charity shop concessions by government - its much cheaper for them to rent hence being so many flooding the streets of such towns.
But one thing it still has is its history, and its sprawling nature which gets me everytime, and some good surfing in Winter which I sometimes brave

@@PhilippaBeale get way too many subsidies in terms of rates etc. Places like Scarborough which are so seasonal need more support for businesses in the winter period, so they can survive and try help revive the high street. Look at somewhere such as York, awesome high streets full of independent traders - and i feel Scaborough with its natural beauty and old history can achieve something similar if supported.
@@nisnga147 I am sure it can. After all it was where Alan Ackbourne put on his wonderful plays, it was where the Sackville Wests had their summer home that became an art gallery. It is the place of my youth and I wish it well. My parents are up the road in RHB, under the sod of course. Unfortunately I am too old and lame to make the journey .
Went to Scarborough on holiday in 1976. I was 10. It was the summer of the heat wave and ladybirds and for a Scottish lad it was great.
The outside pool was open, we saw the model navy in the park and went out on a "rocket" boat that had my mum feeling very ill. Lots of wee shops and amusements, the castle and a trip to Bridlington to pick up a dachshund puppy that lived with us until he was 17.
It was probably a bit run down even then but everywhere was so it was normal and a lot of people still holidays at home. We weren't all taking package tours to Spain. What helped was that we could go everywhere by train and quite cheaply. Then Thatcher came in and fecked us all up.

All our sea side towns got hit hard with the package holidays in the 70s 80s I came from bognor regis and even my home town struggled once the manufacturing died mind you you still have butlins that has expanded over the years new hotels gone up over the last few years but the damage has been done thay all need a bit of money invested in them all 😊keep up the good work
I’ve just come across your channel and have watched most of the videos. I often look at abandoned and derelict buildings/houses and think about the history of them. Once upon a time these buildings were occupied and cherished.

One of my ideas is to provide a free window cleaning service to local business in return for promoting my service. A tagline i thought of was " local business supporting local business, supporting the community"
Maybe your viewers/subscribers might provide some feedback as to whether they would support. Would locals support a business that directly supports local business? Would they resent paying for a service that they know a lical business doesn't? It's been on my mind for a while but not yet pulled the trigger as it were. Keep doing what you're doing. All the best,
