Sam Memmolo Installs Town Car, Crown Victoria And Grand Marquis Rear Conversion Kit

  • Watch mechanic and television host Sam Memmolo as he shows how to install a Strutmasters suspension conversion kit on the rear of a Mercury Grand Marquis. The same product fits Lincoln Town Cars and Ford Crown Victoria vehicles equipped with an air suspension system from the factory.
    Although the rear shocks tend to vary, this video applies for all Town Car, Grand Marquis and Crown Victoria vehicles from 1990 to 2011 models. PLEASE FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS provided with purchase of your Strutmasters conversion kit for the latest and best installation procedure.
    With more than four decades of experience working on vehicles, Sam Memmolo knows a few things about factory air suspension systems. He knows all of those systems have a 100% failure rate with age and mileage AND they rely on a series of electronic components to work properly.
    Like thousands of mechanics across the country, Sam Memmolo recommends converting the leaking rubber air springs (also called air bags) to the exclusive premium steel coil springs in the Strutmasters conversion kit. While you are back there, it is vital to install new shock absorbers for a quality ride. Sam knows that shocks provide the smooth ride and springs just support the weight of the vehicle.
    As you will see in the video, our products are designed to be simple to install, provide a great ride quality and save customers thousands of dollars versus OE replacement parts. We work on customer vehicles every day to design new products and to stay on top of the latest suspension challenges.
    Strutmasters founder Chip Lofton was the first to offer a fully assembled suspension conversion kit when the air suspension failed on his personal Lincoln in 1999. The company is still headquartered in North Carolina, where Lofton leads a team that strives to provide the best products and customer service in the industry. They use premium steel coil springs that are made exclusively for them in America. All of their conversion kits are assembled in small batches by experienced employees to ensure the highest quality.
    These electronically-controlled factory suspension systems are very complicated and expensive! A common failure happens when rubber in the system cracks and leaks air -- causing the onboard compressor to eventually fail. This results in an immediate loss of ride height and renders many vehicles undriveable. Older, high-mileage vehicles will generally require multiple repairs to keep the system working.
    Don't learn the hard way! Avoid multiple repairs that come with fixing the existing system (especially with cheap, imitation parts). Take it from veteran mechanic Sam Memmolo: Fix It Once, Fix It Right with the original -- Strutmasters!

    Now 8 months since converting my 2003 Lincoln Town car air suspension system to new rear coil springs and rear shocks from Strutmasters. Absolutely no regrets. Ride is just as good as the air bags. To get rid of the air suspension light I pulled out the dash on the drivers side so I could take out the plastic cover that is over the gauges. Then used double sided tape to add a some dark piece of plastic from a video game display case over the message that says air suspension. Worked great.

    Have had these on my 1990 Lincoln Towncar for two years. They saved my car from the junkyard. Prior airbags were very cracked. Easy to install took only 1.5 hrs. I honestly cannot tell too much a difference in handling, comfort, etc.

    A couple years ago, I changed my Air Springs (Bags) on my 1995 Town Car. Now it sounds like the compressor is about to go. Looking back, I should have installed these replacements. Great job on the video. I do not think this video was out when I did my Town Car.

      @@Strutmasters My comment above is 9 years old. Back then I added new air bags. I used the lincolnsonline.com website to figure out how to do it. I sold the car a year or so later. I also owned a 2003 Grand Marquis Ultimate with air suspension . The air compressor went bad on that one . I replaced the air compressor and one year later something else went bad. That is when I had my local independent mechanic add replacement springs. To anyone out there reading this , do not try to fix an older air suspension vehicle , just buy spring replacements. After having two air suspensions vehicles. I'll never buy another one ever. Both my Town Car and the Grand Marquis air suspension never had great rides with the air bags.

      Your timing is PERFECT!! I have a 1997 Town Car that's losing air overnight. I was thinking about replacing the air springs, BUT due to the age of the car, I think that getting the conversion kit is probably a better idea. I was afraid it'd ruin the car's fantastic ride, but, apparently, that's not the case.

    M Lincoln dealership does this for their customers. They use either arnott or strut master coil springs and new shocks. I used a local family auto shop. Completed this 2 days ago and really like the conversion. No regrets. Ride is about the same as air springs. Have a 2003 Lincoln Town Car. Saved a lot of money. $ 450 was the total cost. If you need air springs because you tow a boat then the air springs may be needed.

Or get the conversion system for 230 bucks, have someone slap them on the car for 80-120 bucks, turn of air suspension light, and sell it for a profit, or keep it for another 100,000 miles.

    • @Strutmasters
      @Strutmasters  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I don't think that the manufacturers see it as an issue. The air suspension is a great ride and every time it goes bad most people carry it to the dealership and spend several thousand dollars to get it fixed. This is a win win situation for them.

    • @chadmason8526
      @chadmason8526 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tigerfire75 Most often the problem is the air springs. You can check this. 1) When the car is at correct ride height turn off the air suspension switch. 2) Lift the car so that the rear wheals are off the ground. (not by the axle, it has to hang) 3) Spray soapy water on them and check for leaks/bubbles forming. Normally they crack at the bottom, they fold over themselves and you will not see this area unless the suspension is hanging freely. Pumps do not usually go bad except when you do not fix the leakage problem. It is the pump running all the time because of a leak that wears them out. If you fix the leak instead of ignoring it, chances are you will not have a pump problem.
