I'm cheering for zcam to succeed. If they can work out the bugs this will be a brilliant little cine cam at an almost affordable price. The mirrorless cameras are getting close with technology but the form factor can't handle the heat. This has the potential to be a system you could run with for years
Good job, Matti. And thanks for the shout-out! 🤓🙏 On an unrelated note, I like how you've configured the studio. It works really well as a pleasing backdrop to your talking head shot. Looks great!
I think the F6 is the best camera I've owned, love the form factor and build. It's a modular little tank. Works great in hot and cold weather. It has a ton of different flavors of Codecs for different levels of projects. I also love that I can nearly make it through a day long shoot with basically one NPF battery, granted my batteries are pretty new. The 10-bit is great, and the color science in general hasn't given me any issues in post. Really enjoy this camera.
do you have the full frame model? still like it a year later? was considering the e2 f6 full frame over the panasonic s1h/bs1h or the sony fx3. don't need mirrorless form factor, but the software/usability issues w/ zcam have me a little concerned
Good review! Just FYI, You can set a custom voltage warning that will stop recording and write the file if the battery gets too low. This is helpful for preventing data loss for sure and a good solution until zcam fixes the data loss issue or at least disables file splitting. Most of the npf you would use with the cam run the cam 2-3 hours easy...especially the larger ones...so those two factors combined I think make it a lot more suited for long form than you would think.
That red blotch happens when I film with my Fujis too. It goes away in Premiere when you change your sequence setting to "Maximum Bit Depth." It drove me crazy for months not knowing that.
Hi Matti! Great video! I just want to answer/clarify two problems you had: - If you lose power you lose the footage you were recording: Well, if you rip out the battery while the camera is recording… yes, but if you lose power because your battery is dying, No. Z-Cam automatically stop the recording when the battery goes under the set voltage limit and save your footage (I don’t know many cameras that do that). - App is not connecting to the camera: I expect that you already connected your phone to the camera’s Wi-Fi but you also need to turn off data (cellphone data) on your phone. Let me know if that fixes it for you!
Colour shift was already fixed in firmware. You need to enable airplane mode to use your phone as a monitor. Power loss isn’t really a thing since the camera stops recording when you are running low and closes the clip. You can also run dual power source for hot swap of batteries.
Loss of data with loss of power is so 1980s, but at least it has an ethernet port. This camera should always be hooked up to another computer for recording then. I'm getting one of those as soon as I leave the jungle. Thanks for the awesome video 🙏
Great video...This week was a great of announcements for us. Did you see our announcement with Z CAM?! Earlier this week alongside Z CAM we enabled 12-bit 5.8K Apple ProRes RAW over HDMI recording on the Ninja V HDR monitor-recorder in combination with the Flagship series Z CAM E2-F6, E2-F8 and E2-S6 large sensor cinema cameras, as well as 4K ProRes RAW recording from the Micro 4/3 E2, E2-M4 and E2 C models.
Speaking of Red they’re actually coming out with a camera called the Komodo that looks like it’s about the same size as the Z-Cam that shoots 6k and has a Canon RF mount but it’s only gonna have a super 35 sensor. Pricing is supposed to be around $5k-6k USD.
I agree w/ you about shooting RAW. Pro Res is wonderful, but as long as you nail exposure and WB you can get beautiful footage with h.625 with much smaller files.
Z CAM: I shoot 6K raw Canon: hold my beer Just happy to see technology trickle down from high end cinema cameras to budget cinema cameras and now to mirrorless cameras. film making has never been this accessible and at this pace by 2025 all new cameras will shoot raw and the competition will be for dynamic range. 👍👍👍

It's awesome to have this review from a youtuber you trust. I was looking and saving for a Zcam the past year, and you convinced me. My budget will decide between the 4/3, the S35 or Full Frame Sensor.
Does it overheat like the R5? Unlike the R5, this is designed to be used on a production. With all the connectors, mounting points, and everything. Can't imagine the R5 being used on production even though the spec sheet seems to suggest it would be.
as an avid Zcam user its great to see some more mainstream content coming out! ps the e2 m4 is a 4/3rds sensor but still 4k 120p great DR and its only 1500$:) pps I use the app with a cable and its rock solid and super low lag! ppps they have released some new firmware I believe or some sort of fix for the power loss file issue
I love my Zcam's I ended up purchasing (2) E2's and (1) E2S6. I highly recommend the cameras for all shooting scenarios. The only Pet peeve I have is the little screen. Heres to the Zcam E3 series ayyyy!
Despite the R5 being out, doesn’t entice me enough yet to switch to it. I shoot Sony and have invested myself in the lenses so for now with my a7iii and a7rii I can accomplish what I need for my TH-cam and client work. It’s awesome to see what the cameras are becoming and how much the mirrorless word is progressing. The R5 is a great step into the more “cinema” approach for mirrorless cameras. The Z cam looks great for what they are and provides a different approach to investing into more cinema cameras. For me not there yet, but who knows by the time I feel like I need to get into it, there might be more competition and options that’ll suit me best!
They have interchangeable lens mounts M4/3, PL, EF, and they're working on Sony mount now. All with the exception of the M4/3 support their electronic ND.
This video was more exciting to click on then the Canon R5 & R6 videos. I understand how the pro's all want R5, R6 and possibly Z6s and Z7s. But, I think the R, RP, Z6 & Z7 is more then enough fun. Just wish Nikon would get some Z lens out as I'm more excited about what can be done with lens these days.
It is definitely a superb image... but could you compare it against the BMPCC 6K and EOS R5? At 4000 USD (unbuilt) it is twice the cost of BM6K (1995 USD now, including Resolve Studio) and at par with EOS R5. Both of those cameras offer RAW, and slow motion.. (And more importantly, the R5 offers DPAF in all modes)... also the after sales service. Thanks for the review!
My take on cameras that don't use their own mount is they should all use the Z mount now, because once the right adapter exists they can take any and every lens. Great camera though, it seems!
Smartphone monitor on Zcam always works fine.. I have one zcam e2 I bought in 2019 and it can monitor by smortphone since the first day I bought it. Maybe you didnt configure it correctly. And congratulations.. its a good video, even I disagree about some points :)
You could always render out proxy files to edit with in Premiere Pro. Then when you want to render it, Premiere will use the real files. It's only one extra step, but it'll make the footage usable to edit with. I used to have to do this back in 2017 with 4k phone footage when all I had was a 2010 Dell desktop to edit with. Those were the times, lol.
You can also make your own preset in media encoder and then assign in Premiere to automatically convert any video that you drag into Premiere to encode your ProRes 720 proxy files. As it creates each proxy, premiere will automatically switch out for the proxy. Oh and another tip there when making that preset in media player, be sure to put a proxy background watermark on all your proxy files so you know when you are looking at a proxy versus the original.
