35 years ago I worked on an offshore oil platform in the Santa Barbara Channel in Southern California. The platform was located about 6 miles offshore in +- 200 feet of water and loaded with many different varieties of fish from top to bottom in the water column. During certain times of the year different types of surface fish would congregate around the platform, and would inhale corn, peas, beans, pieces of hot dogs, salmon eggs, pretty much anything you can think of...

I worked off shore on a crew boat about 15 years ago in the gulf of mexico. I agree 100%. My first hitch out I did not bring a fishing rod and I was catching huge fish with a nylon rope and a bent nail I sharpened and put a barb on. Captain was laughing at me but I was keeping bringing in some big grouper and snapper all day.

Corn is an ancient (at least 80s) Carp Fishing Method, You fire extra corn out there with a pocketed sling shot as an attractant.

Really appreciate a fisherman like you trying new stuff, especially cheap stuff. In freshwater I add a lot of salt to the corn so it won't go bad for next trip and maybe puts more scent in the water. Looking forward to spring when I can use my homemade pork trailers cut thin for Mepps Spinners. Maybe soak some in koolaid for color varieties. Please keep putting out some cheap alternative bait advice to counter the crazy price inflation going on.

Canned corn gives off a milky liquid that I believe gets the fish to bite. We used to poke holes in a can of creamed corn and let it sink to the bottom to concentrate fish, and fish near the submerged can. Basically like chumming.

Uncle Josh use to carry a line of jarred salmon eggs. Not sure anymore. But in a spawn bag setup they would surely give off a ton of scent. You wouldn’t impale each individual egg. Just get some netting and add 4-5 eggs and wrap up into a little ball. They make tiny floats you can add to the bag to help them float just off the bottom. How we fished salmon and trout up in Michigan. Maybe add just a smidge of a piece of fish bites to each bag to see if it helps.
