I was 4 when this song was released in 1994. This song was my absolute favorite from age 4 to 15 and is still in my top 5. When this song came out, I did not understand why they wrote the song or the tragedy they were singing about but I knew it was important. Even as a child, I knew there was pain in that song and it hit me hard. I think this song was the reason I never grew up thinking of war as a game or some fantasy where heros fight evil and innocents don't get hurt, especially as I came to understand the meaning behind it. This song opened my eyes to the hardships of life from an early age and I'm thankful for that. RIP Delores O'Riordan, thank you for being such a huge part of my life.

Zombie is considered a protest song against the Northern Ireland conflict. Dolores O'Riordan wrote the lyrics to the song during the band's 1993 tour of England in memory of two children (Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry) who were killed in an IRA bombing in Warrington on March 20, 1993. Essential passages refer to the Easter Rising of 1916 and its traumatic consequences.

Fun fact: Dolores' singing performance in this song is designed to emulate Keening, an old Gaelic mourning tradition... a sort of traditional simultaneous singing/wailing in grief over the departed at a Gaelic funeral.
Complete with emulation of the hiccuping noises someone ends up making after sobbing hard for a long time.
She is literally mourning and grieving all the innocent people caught in the crossfire of conflict... especially the children.

The song isn't from 2009. It predates TH-cam and the internet we know of today by a lot, it's from 1994 and one of the most well known anti-war songs globally.
It's almost weird how relevant this song is today, and specifically for Russia. Not just as an anti-war song itself, but even the title seems oddly relevant, but I especially find one part of the lyrics so damn relevant to the Russian population: "When the violence causes silence - We must be mistaken"
They're completely detached from all the suffering that they are causing, stay completely silent. This country will never not be a mafia state if no one is doing anything against it. No one can change this but them. All of this is exactly why Ukraine had the Euromaidan, why so many former Soviet Union states wanted to get away from their former masters in the Kreml. Silence is compliance.

The song captures the intensity, despair, anger and insanity of mindless fighting. Although much simpler (just voice and guitar), a rare song that tells a sad but real depiction of war is 'War is Hell' by Wes Makepiece.

I remember when this song came out in the 90s. Like you, I just listened to the song but really didn't pay all that much attention to the lyrics. It wasn't until I was an adult that I did. Now I kinda feel bad cause this song is just so much deeper than I realized. This is such a good song on so many levels; I have a much much greater appreciation for it. This was a tuff reaction to watch; I hate seeing you all torn-up like that but I'm glad you now realize just how much more meaningful this song is. Shortly after its release, this song helped put an end to the violence in Ireland and England for a time.

I am a 60-year-old American and I cannot tell you how moving that was to me. My heart goes out to you on every level. 💔
And if it helps any, I was the same way as you. I was very aware I mean of wars and that kind of stuff being a guy, but what I mean is when that song came out, it's not one of those where I went out and bought the album like I did with a lot of other bands.
I'm a musician and I love music. And for me, I instinctually pay a lot more attention to the music at first than the lyrics. And when I write music it's the same way.
So I remember hearing this song a lot on the radio and you would hear it you know out at a club or at a friend's house, and I remember loving the intensity of it. Of her voice. It was just great. I didn't even know the name of the song was Zombie. I just knew it is that "angry chick" song, laugh. But I loved it. I really loved it. I had no idea what the lyrics were about. And of course once you know, it just amplifies how emotionally powerful that song is. And I actually do know something about the conflict she's talking about. I am of Irish and Swedish heritage.
Finally, from just a music understanding point of view, what she's doing there with her voice when it breaks upwards? It's almost like a yodel if you know what that is. And a lot of singers use that to show emotion. But just not to that extent.
What she was using is a feature of Irish vocal music it also exists outside of music, and it is called keening. It's almost always associated with anguish or loss.
I know the absolute perfect song for you having heard this and seeing your reaction. And it's somebody I was hoping you had done some reactions to anyway, so it's Elvis Presley.
And this particular song is from his 1968 Comeback Special which was something that was filmed for a Christmas special on one of the network broadcasts. But he ends the thing with what was then considered a controversial song, written specifically for him by one of his songwriters as a tribute to Dr Martin Luther King, who had recently been assassinated, along with the general racial strife and chaos that was going on at that time in the late 1960s.
He was very deeply affected by the assassination and in this performance called "If I Can Dream", and it is the very final song in the concert, it is definitely the finale of the show, that's the tribute song and he gives it so much pain and emotion in it. A lot of people consider it to be one of the greatest performances of that era . And it's easy to find on TH-cam by searching for If I Can Dream 1968 Comeback Special, and make sure it's the one where he is in a white suit with a red tie and there is a huge Elvis sign behind him. I am positive that you will love it.
And while he doesn't do keening, he's definitely using those upward vocal breaks and it's not fake, he's just pouring his heart out and then he's exhausted at the end.
Apparently after that, he went backstage and cried for hours. But it's such a powerful and uplifting song, which is why I thought you would love to hear it. But it deals with similar topics in a way. But not war. Just over racial and ethnic division. And it is a masterful performance. And also, they wanted him to close with a Christmas song but he absolutely insisted on finishing this one with a social statement instead. It's such an amazing story and such an amazing moment in time.

This song was released in 1994 in Ireland. In an interview with Louder Sound, O'Riordian recalls:
It was extremely busy and we were working all the time around the clock,” she said. “That song came to me when I was in Limerick, and I wrote it initially on an acoustic guitar, late at night. I remember being in my flat, coming up with the chorus, which was catchy and anthemic. So I took it into rehearsals, and I picked up the electric guitar. Then I kicked in distortion on the chorus, and I said to Ferg [Fergal Lawler, drums]: ‘Maybe you could beat the drums pretty hard.’ Even though it was written on an acoustic, it became a bit of a rocker….It came organically because we were using our live instruments, we were plugging in a lot, and we started to mess around with feedback and distortion. When you’re on tour you start to mess around a bit more with the live side of things. There were a lot of bands around that were part of the grunge thing, and this wasn’t grunge, but the timing was good. We couldn’t have really fitted in with grunge, because we were just a different type of a band. We were Irish and from Limerick, and we had a lot of our own ideas. A lot of the grunge bands were very similar to each other.
