Saw this video 5 years ago and started running because of it. Still do it because it's so much fun. Thanks for all the great content throughout the years
I remember seeing this for the first time several years ago, and it motivated me to immediately go outside and run. Fast forward to today and I'm a x-c runner and have been for 3 years. I've qualified for sectionals twice but didn't go state. That's fine. There's next year. This video helped start my love for running and it's what I do for fun. But now I've come to a fork in my life and I must make a pretty big decision (at least a big decision for a 17yro). I must choose to either spend senior year with my closest friends, or become a foreign exchange student in Germany and go with the girl I like. I've never had to make this big a decision before, and I'm scared. I didn't know how I was going to choose, but you've helped remind me that there's a way. Running. I'm going for a long run. I justed wanted to thank you for reminding and motivating me again years later.
7months ago i left a comment, saying i went for a run. till this day i run every weekend bevause of it. thanks exurb2a for making me healthy, happier and more self confident
I started jogging daily with poor 1,2km covered, felt horribly, but yesterday on day 21 I already ran 5,5km which is just sort of a miracle for such unsporty person like me, so don't give up too soon, you can adapt in like two weeks and after that jogging does become an addiction. For me being a musician myself, jogging is the only bit of time when i'm not in my headphones and i'm left alone with my mind, my body and the sounds of the world outside and it's just marvelous. So give it a shot, you never know until you do :в

Same story, I was 18 and sedentary going into college, and 170 pounds and skinny fat at 6'. But I did a couch to 5k. I'm now about 6 months in, and running a 5k every day. I have cheekbones now, a jawline, and at 154lbs finally toned. My head works better, and despite the time commitment, I feel happier and I do better in school. 10/10 recommended
Haha, I'm 18 about the same weight, slightly shorter, and am doing couch right now xD you make me feel motivated. I just need to find a good and easy place to run and I'll hopefully start doing it regularly :D
Instead of music, when I run, I listen to long podcasts. Instead of short bursts of indeterminable running-to, it's like having someone talk you through the run
Bridget Hildebrand how do your brain focuses on podcasts when running when i run at the start of 10 mins is tiring but a few more minutes later i will be in the zone and i shut my eyes and *START RUNNING FASTER AND LONGER* that is why im able to finish a full marathon in 2 and a halfish hour not the best time but i guess i was at the top 100 in my marathon
Glonic so your saying that you cant run 5km in abt 20 mins?? My school best marathon runner can finish a 5km run in less than 15 mins his stamina is also better than me
Damn TH-cam even knows I stopped exercising. Fine I'll run tomorrow morning. It's just so annoying when family have to make snide comments or give back handed compliments. Wish I could just do my shit in peace
There is something special about running alone, as exurb said its like meditating with feet. You are alone with your thoughts enjoying the alone time and it feels great!

This might've been the most important video I've ever watched. I decided to try running after watching this video. My mom signed me up for track after seeing me run (I guess she ran track or something in highschool) and though I was initially against it, I tried it and here I am several years later. I've ran 2 years of track and am now starting my 2nd year of cross country, and I just saw this video pop up in my recommended again, and just wanted to thank Exurb1a for introducing me to running.
Me, after having watched every video on exurbia’s channel: damn, i’ve watched every video on his channel. I wish there was more. Me discovering exurb2a: HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
There are many inspirational videos on youtube, but this is the only only one that actually made me change my behavior. I'm running for about 4 weeks now, 2.5 times a week on average. I'm doing this just to get my head clear, so I don't push myself at all (that's okay, because muscle training is not my goal). It's been very beneficial for me, so thank you for sharing your thoughts on running.
Dunno, I had the same experience. About a year ago I ran every other day, getting a little further each time. After about a month, I could run for an hour. It was boring as fuck. ¯\(°_o)/¯
Running with music in the woods. How can it be so boring? It's the best time to think about stuff. Maybe you aren't doing anything serious in life lol.
Matthew Greer Those thoughts are like a wall. Everyday you run you are slowly climbing over the wall, and the harder and more consistently you run the faster you can get over the wall. Once you have finally gotten over that wall running will start to be fun and you will feel good.
@@Niphredyl Wow it's crazy I left that comment a year ago. Just yesterday I ran a 21 minute 5k, a year ago I was 60lbs heavier running 50 minute 5ks. The only reason I run is because I don't entirely enjoy running while running, but I crave running when I'm not. I love the improvement that comes along with it. It's just great to feel better because of the added health benefits. I'm obviously not any kind of speed demon but pushing my limits is great to experience. If you don't like running, don't run. At the end of the day do what makes you happy. Try other activities such as biking or swimming maybe.
It's definitely built into our genetics to run. I mean look at us. We're half legs. I genuinely think it is likely that proper exercise is not only important to "keep fit", but is actually crucial for proper development of the brain. Kids have this natural tendency to want to run around like mad whenever they get the chance. They're not being "hyper", they're being human. Yet slowly over time we drill it into them that they need to "sit still", "stop running" and "behave". By the time most people are adults they've had the desire to run well and truly knocked out of them. Then we wonder why there is an obesity problem. I my opinion, the very first thing primary school kids should do when they show up in the morning is whatever they want for the first 2 hours. Let them run around like mad in the play ground from 9 until 11. Let them get it all out of their system. After that, they'd probably me more likely to sit down and pay attention in class, rather than constantly wanting to know when break is so they can.. you know... run around.
Children are natural runners and they do just run. They have to be told to stop running. I'm not suggesting that the first thing kids should do in the morning is go for a 5 mile run. I'm suggesting that kids should have 2 hours of free time in the playground where most of them do run around. Proper conditioning is necessary to be able to pull off long distance running. However, most adults are exhausted by running for even 30 seconds. That is partly due to an increasing amount of inactivity as we move towards adulthood. We spend more and more time sitting.
Just thoughts really We are built for running. It's a basic mode of movement. If someone can't run slowly but constantly for at least 30minutes, our society has a problem. Everyone should have that kind of stamina, as it is necessary for survival in emergency situations. (Although it might not be enough)
I honestly don't know how I stumbled across this channel. However, over the past few days I have been listening on my headphones while working on the truck. I've been rather enterained and impressed. Fast forward, truck is done and I decided to go for a much needed run to clear my head. I open TH-cam and this is the first video I see. Funny thing right? Anyway, another great video. I hope anyone who sees this has an amazing day! Be kind to yourselves and to one another. Much love my friends!
+Zachary Runkle was that on purpose? I thought he just had the channel with the intention of starting it eventually. Vsauce has several of those. Don't get me wrong, that's hilarious if that was the joke, but I think you may be overanalyzing
Once you've been running for like 10 minutes you suddenly don't care about what other people think of you, because you realize that they don't actually care! When you see someone running do you pay them any mind? Probably not, maybe if they're quite attractive. And if they're overweight, I just feel like silently cheering them on as they're trying to do something about it. Win-win.
this video inspired me to start running for something other than the middle school pacer test. i have been running for the last 4 years, and i’m 16 years old. i’m going to run in the chicago marathon next time they have it. i never knew how much a simple hobby could change my life. it helps with stress, anxiety, and lets me think about everything for 30 minutes to an hour. you were right, it’s definitely a drug. thank you so much for this video, as it genuinely changed my life. edit: for other runners curious, my times are: 5k- 22 minutes 10k- 51 minutes 15k- 1:30:37 pretty decent id say
I spent my whole afternoon procrastinating, wondering if I should go for a run or not, until this randomly came up. I just came bk from my run and i feel great. Cheers mate and thanks for the inspiration!
Running is love, running is life! I‘m 19 years old and i used to work out a lot (u know, gym stuff) and at some point you realize how unhealthy this kind of sport can be (if you don‘t do any form of cardio). I started to run and first i hated it, just like you mentioned in the video.. i gave up and just recently started to run again, for around three or four months now. And i gotta admit that i absolutely love it! The freedom you feel while running as well as the fact, that all the stress and all those annoying and depressing thoughts of the day stop bothering you for some time, really helps me getting through those stressy days/weeks. I‘m still working out, but if i had to choose, i‘d definetly choose running over any other sport! For everyone who‘s having a stressfull life, start running! Everyone can find some time to go for a run, and believe me, while it is not just making you fitter and overall healthier, it also makes you a happier person! Greetings from Germany, fell in love with both of your channels. :-)
I'd love to run, but there's this fun thing called snow. it makes life hell, and is the equivalent of the sky shitting on you. And then having to walk in it for days or months.

I've watched this video for the first time like 6 years ago, it helped me to finally get into shape, in the meanwhile I've learned more about excercise and about myself. I had periods where I couldn't run and felt like shit, found other stuff to do, recently I've finally been able to get back into running and I just wanna thank you for flipping a switch in my mind 6 years ago. If it wasn't for running and in turn you, I'd probably still be overweight. Oh and for ppl reading this, shoes are worth spending some more money on, starting on cheaper ones isn't a bad idea but if you find yourself liking running, get some aesic gells, they're the best.
This video is great and basically applies to hiking for me. On the weekends I try to go on 25-50km worth of hikes and through out the week I try to do 5-6km after work each day. My coworkers think I'm insane but I can't get enough of it. You're not kidding when you say it is the best high ever. I love it so much. My personal best for a hike is almost 60Km in a single day. It's an amazing feeling when you get to a peak and you can watch the sun set over the forest, it's breathtaking. The sheer beauty of it.
You made me start running, 5 days in and I'm doing better. Started off with 2.25km jog, did it in like 15 minutes(?) with two stops, on my 5th jog today i did 2.8km in like 20 minutes(?) with no stops. Thanks man, I've always wanted to start running and you've given me the motivation to do it!

because of this video i just went today for my first run. i really didn't think i could, but this just changed my mind and i wanted to try it. like you said i wanted to start slowly so i aimed at 3k. i just started running without any specific route and without watching the distance for a few songs (that's how i measure time), and finally got home exhausted but not dead just to realize i actually did 4k without pushing myself too hard. so just wanted to say thank you for making this vid and helping me discover running, and that i can do more then i think :)
This video canged my life. (story) i wached this video a year ago, but it never left my head. Jumping back to today, i had my first 5km run, i ran to a pond near my sisters house. First i made some coffe, ate some sandwiches and, was bored, really bored. My phone was out pof battery. So i went outside. I was kind of sad abaut my life. I stomped on bird-poo so i didnt want to wear shoes, so i told my brother i will go swimming. I said to myself to not stop running. I ran on some rocky floor and cut myself a few times, but didnt stop. When i finally got to the pond, my heart was beating and i felt like a boss. I have never felt so proud in my life. As i was swimming i truly felt happy, the consept of time disapeard, i only felt joy swimming. While i was in the water fish started biting my shaking feet. It was tickeling. My feet were shaking, but i ran back, i wanted to feel proud agin and i sure did. I ran back, it was the best feeling. When i got home i took a cold shower. I felt like a man. 5km for my 4th day as a 14yr old is a big acomplishment for me. Thanks for making this video.
I can reflect everything in this video. I was working 12 hours a day and was never so unfit, but since the quarantine I started running after I lost my job and I've lost weight, can run more than a couple of miles and feel so much better mentally. A word of caution though, I disagree with the trainers. After I started running 10k's I started to get shin splints and needed better support. But, everyone is different, if your in pain it might be worth looking into good trainers. They don't have to be expensive as long as they cushion your legs well enough.
After I saw this video in March I identically went on a run the next day. It felt pretty good although in reality I only ran 1.5k. Now if I'm going on a run I do a 8.5km loop near my house and it feels great. Personally I prefer cycling because it brings me places faster and further, takes less time and is loads of fun with friends but I still run twice or three times a week and I love it
I have an easy solution for you. Procrastinate even more. Make yourself late for everything, that way you'll have to run sometimes. It's called running late for a reason.
Hey I don’t know if you are gonna read this but when the pandemic started I had some panic attacks for the first time in my life and this video helped me. I started running and I haven’t stop. I love your videos. Thank you.
hmm. I'm lazy lil shit but I kinda like the sound of this. perhaps an alternative to drinking alone until my liver hurts then collapsing on my bathroom floor crying.
I sign under everything you state here. Very well put, Sir. The "If you're extremely neurotic" part got me. By the way, I like running while listening to Fear Factory full blast. Happy juices inductor! And swimming has also become my thing. Not as exhaustive as running, the whole body is used until it gets dormant and the breathing in and the silence under water gets me some focus, mental clarity and bubbles sound. Wrinkles on the tip of my fingers help me to accept my age and prepare for the upcoming death. Very good for managing dyslexia as no bubbles sound above water and it's hard to breath under water.
So, I've been trying to go and actually run for months now, but with all the videos I watched I still couldn't find the motivation to do so cause I was always saying "this looks nice, I will start running tomorrow" and the next day I would say the same exact thing. But, idk after watching this simple video from you I managed to go outside and actually run in the park. It felt great even tho I could barely run short distances and then had to walk in order to rest to run again. I do hope I can keep it up and if not naturally, Ill watch this video every day to get the motivation. Thank you.
This vid inspired me to pick up running during lockdown, I'm now on my 120th day running in a row, and it's helped me greatly, finding my inner grit and love for running and life in general. Thank you.
I feel the same about running. I'm a computer science student and sometimes I feel like some execises are just impossible to solve or that some concepts are too difficult to grasp. But every time I run, I feel like I can tackle any problem and most of the time, I'm suddenly able to understand it. Running is one of the greatest things in life.
The best thing to do is just stop and give a firm NO. Most dogs aren't trying to attack you; they just get excited by fast-moving things. And even if they are trying to attack you, pretty much any dog is going to be able to outrun a human so continuing to run won't help either. BONUS: if you stay still long enough for the owner to catch up and leash them, you can give them judgey looks and/or comments thus ruining their walk (revenge!) As a person whose dog chases runners, sorry man. He really isn't trying to fuck you up, he just likes running and is excited that you like running too and kind of annoyed that I don't like running. I think he's trying to tell me something. Anyway, he's getting better but terriers are stubborn. Some breeds have a strong chasing instinct (and some owners have a strong stupidity instinct and let their chasey dogs off lead in busy areas).
Aw well, yeah I guess that's a concern. There aren't really a whole lot of stray dogs where I live, so I hadn't thought of that. Depends on your location, I suppose.
I really liked the part where you said running is good for getting good and creative ideas, .... until I realized you were making a video about running because that's the best you came up with while you were running. Still, good video, love your channel, keep it up fam.
I prefer cycling when I want to think. Here are my reasons: 1. I can get further. 2. Getting back after long ride feels easier compared to running. 3. I am faster than people on foot.
I don’t cycle or run recreationally but I do cycle 5-7 miles a day working in delivery, sometimes it can feel great but I recommend running or cycling alone in woods or fields rather than in cites or on roads.
Lewie Armstrong :/ yeah that sucks... I would prefer to cycle outside on an empty road anyday than use a treadmill... Yeah treadmill is the last resort now, back to the gym 😭
I wish I could run but I live in Dubai which was originally a desert and I wouldn‘t be able to run because of the heat as people have gotten heatstrokes in sport lessons before

i dont like to run. I like all of the benefits, but I hate the fact that after one hour or two I've only made 5/10k. so I got a bike instead. same feeling, but instead I actually feel like I did much more, by putting the same amount of efforts as someone that runs. I know it's psychological, but I like it better. great video.
im a year late but cycling is nothing like running physically speaking. they use very different muscles and have very different effects. its like doing curls instead of pullups because they both use arms

Once you have finally gotten over that wall running will start to be fun and you will feel good.

don't worry, just go for a run, and that'll work in contradictions
Not gonna lie, he had us in the first half
Download a running trainer app, don't do it without any knowledge of your limits.
.
Just thoughts really We are built for running. It's a basic mode of movement. If someone can't run slowly but constantly for at least 30minutes, our society has a problem. Everyone should have that kind of stamina, as it is necessary for survival in emergency situations. (Although it might not be enough)
Sean Martin Running app. Humans are maybe the best runners on Earth. 2 million years of running, all achieved somehow without apps.

Win-win.

That one guy who liked my comment you are a legend, you just made my day:)

Personally I prefer cycling because it brings me places faster and further, takes less time and is loads of fun with friends but I still run twice or three times a week and I love it
Learn not to heel-strike while you run! We evolved to land on the balls of our feet when we run.
Once you start running ...
You can't stop without the past catching up with you
Its just the perfect time to recreate with detail those bad decisions.
I've been meaning to start running but I have an absurd procrastination problem.
That's why when you're outside one day and don't have anything to do, you just do it
I have an easy solution for you. Procrastinate even more. Make yourself late for everything, that way you'll have to run sometimes. It's called running late for a reason.
boggers I think you ascended the 9 realms
I shit I forgot to run because I was watching a video about running
@@boggers nah i am often late but i don't care enough to run
Thank you.
Any updates?
This vid inspired me to pick up running during lockdown, I'm now on my 120th day running in a row, and it's helped me greatly, finding my inner grit and love for running and life in general. Thank you.
Giant it better to go every second day so you dont get injured and also ice heard you can actually get fitter by doing that
I feel the same about running. I'm a computer science student and sometimes I feel like some execises are just impossible to solve or that some concepts are too difficult to grasp. But every time I run, I feel like I can tackle any problem and most of the time, I'm suddenly able to understand it. Running is one of the greatest things in life.
I love to take this to the next level, Mowing. I love to mow my lawn for fun, benefits exactly like this, but with added productivity!!!
I want to run at outside but fuckin dogs always chase me or attack me
LPT Don't run through dog park XD
The best thing to do is just stop and give a firm NO. Most dogs aren't trying to attack you; they just get excited by fast-moving things. And even if they are trying to attack you, pretty much any dog is going to be able to outrun a human so continuing to run won't help either.
BONUS: if you stay still long enough for the owner to catch up and leash them, you can give them judgey looks and/or comments thus ruining their walk (revenge!)
As a person whose dog chases runners, sorry man.
It's okay when dogs have owners, but what about stray dogs?
Aw well, yeah I guess that's a concern. There aren't really a whole lot of stray dogs where I live, so I hadn't thought of that. Depends on your location, I suppose.

This is me...I've been running for years now, and you've articulated exactly how I feel. Well done...fantastic video. Thanks
I couldn't force myself to go running for 2 months now, thank you, i want to go running, bye
Is this a new type of scripting language or are you speaking?
I really liked the part where you said running is good for getting good and creative ideas, .... until I realized you were making a video about running because that's the best you came up with while you were running.
Still, good video, love your channel, keep it up fam.
it's a pro tip
Welp, I was contemplating going on a run today. Now I kinda have to
this is one of the best videos Ive ever seen on running
I prefer cycling when I want to think. Here are my reasons:
1. I can get further.
2. Getting back after long ride feels easier compared to running.
3. I am faster than people on foot.
Aleksandar Delic you forgot number 4. You can yell beep beep at people walking
I don’t cycle or run recreationally but I do cycle 5-7 miles a day working in delivery, sometimes it can feel great but I recommend running or cycling alone in woods or fields rather than in cites or on roads.
Lewie Armstrong what if you live in an unsafe crowded city without parks or literally any open space?
Mira Maples I do live in a crowded city and that does make it hard yeah not much you can do but treadmill I guess

I watched this video two weeks ago and have run about 7 times since. Thank you so much for planting this in my brain, it’s really helping me
A local coach in the running groups here swears by a Run/walk/run/walk methodology for preventing injuries. 👌 This vid is awesome and you speak the truth about running🤘
“Meditating with your feet” I LOVE THAT! Running is lifeeee
i dont like to run.
You have to walk to run a 5k in a hour
@@PAINZDA They're both cardio. Which is the one that makes you feel good + all the other things described in this video.
its been 4 years ever since i saw this video and find myself coming back to this whenever i get derailed from life stuff and start running again
thanks exurb1a u da man, this video and haruki murakami's book about running inspired me to start
