  • In this video I demonstrate a violin practice method to go from 3rd position to 4th or 5th position and then to 7th position by setting target notes, then shifting to them. Practice the shifting note front and back to perfect intonation.

This is what i wanted to learn in the last few weeks, seriously! I'm having troubles getting to a higher positions on the violin since im a self-learner. I don't watch TH-cam tutorials about the violin trying to "unlock it's mysteries by myself" and I've succeeded in many areas (as far as i can tell) such as: knowing that the 4th finger on A string is the same as open E string, i know it may sounds like a basic thing to say but it did motivated me to pursuit my attentions. Now i can do simple vibrato which by the way im very happy/proud of. I just want to say that i hope you read this comment because your a true teacher. Have a good day :)

Please help me on further clarification on this question:
I'm learning to play on 7th position. Difficult to cram the fingers together when playing in half-steps.
Do we need to release previous finger to make space for new finger for every new note?

your video is wesome! QUESTION: how do you go backward? like from 3rd to 2nd? from 2nd to 1st? from 4th to 2nd? etc. please reply here or tell me where I will find my answer.

Thank you! For shifting down, the same process applies, but obviously in reverse. Another good rule is "old finger to new position". So, whether going up or down, note the last finger before the shift. That finger should do the shift into the new position. As with all rules, sometimes you'll break this rule out of convenience. Practice shifts in both directions, even when the music only needs shifting in one direction. Eventually, for 2nd, 3rd and 4th, you will be able to target notes from anywhere as you'll have muscle memorized locations. It's also fun and useful to practice targeting certain locations on the fingerboard from a left hand down at your side, off the fingerboard. Knowing where D is on A in 3rd position, or corresponding notes in that location on adjacent strings, is a worthy goal.

@@ViolinTeacher I will try to do it but it is certainly difficult because I 'm just guessing how far back to go. It is easier form 4th to 1st but not in between. Do you know what I refer to? It will certainly be a big help if you can do a showing it step by step and then I can practice following you. Thank you for responding to my question. I will wait for your answer here.

@@blancaschmit4448 It is a step by step process without an easy shortcut. Familiarity and consistency will be your best friend in this case. I haven't been active on youtube for a couple years now, but I do still try to answer all comments. Whatever shifts you encounter in your music, practice those. There is not a blanket strategy beyond what we've discussed to tackle downward shifts. With time, you will remember where notes are because of doing it all the time. Meanwhile, become familiar with each position. 2nd position is out in mid air so it can be challenging. I have some 2nd position videos in a playlist. Good luck!
