In this Video I show you how to play in the third position on the Violin. I cover some basic exercises and go a little bit into shifting to the third position. I come back again. And this time I noticed that the sound your violin have is really sounding! It is loud and brilliant, even my speaker vibrates! I think it is the resonance, and this is what made sounds become tones and music.

Thank you for this video. It was super helpful, I have been struggling with playing in 3rd for the past few weeks, and weirdly, shifting isn't even the hard part right now, it's getting the notes right! Using the upper and lower strings for comparison hadn't even crossed my mind!
Feral Fae it is a practice which also works kind of for the other fingers. 3rd finger with lower string is a sixth and fourth finger with upper string is a third. Maybe you can use this as well, if you can hear those intervals! I use this method always, when I feel insecure with intonation. It‘ s quick and easy! 😏 Thank you for your comment👍👍

Thanks for the information and explanation. I actually started modern violin several years back, however did not go very far back then. I am more interested in baroque violin so I started lessons in baroque violin with my first teacher for baroque violin when I lived in Korea. I am now back in Canada and I am working on it by myself. I will start using 2nd position. Thank you.
2nd position is very much underrated! Good to practice that!

Simon, you are so funny right in the end! It was of course very helpful! I find it difficult coming back on a scale to know where/when to shift. Going up is much easier!
I use to practice scales one times up and downwards two times! That compensates for the higher difficulty downwards. But still.... you are right: downwards is much harder

Excellent! You know what? This works exactly the same on a mandolin, keeping the straight wrist.
I know, the mandolin is so similar to the violin. I once get one into my hands and I started playing the Ciaccona by J.S.Bach... it went ok :D

Should i learn the third position without learning the second position
Some violinists like fiddlerman and Ray Chen say you should rest your wrist because they have always been trying to teach by finding locations to find the position
Like put your thumb in the curvature of the violin next to the scroll and it is first position
Shift up with your wrist a bit and you are in 2nd position
Rest your wrist on the shoulder of the instrument and you are in 3rd
That is how they teach and i have no argument against any opinion as it is music and it sounds beautiful both ways
They teach by landmarks of your thumb or wrist
Ray Chen is a great player and what works for him just works. I can't argue against that. Also I myself use and also advise my students to use the wrist touching the body of the violin for 3rd position if necessary. It is not a "clean" way to play in the 3rd position though! Ideally the wrist should in the 3rd position already be in a position, which also works for higher positions. If the wrist is too flat, you get stuck higher up the fingerboard or have to change too much. But of course there are many factors to consider. The thumb position for example is also quite a delicate matter, since it is partly very personal where you hold it. But there are some good principles for the thumb to keep in mind, to play efficiently. Some great players do that intuitively.

He has very big hands unlike me (I am a beginner kid but I have been listening to classical music since the end of last year) he has also told me to never ever move my hand while I play if I am not shifting (I still did not take how to shift) as it will hindere when I learn vibrato because it will make it hard to develop every string alone if I move my hand

Thanks for the video, but I have one question. The other tutors say the wrist should touch the violin when playing third position and that’s is the right way, but for me i feel it is limiting my fingers , so are there 2 theories on that, or is it the only right way, not to touch it? Thanks
In my opinion touching the violin with the wrist in the third position will result in a strange wrist position. Using it as a guidance sometimes comes into handy. But it is actually technically "cleaner" if you don't touch the violin in the third position. I would never say never, but I will definitely say not touching the violin is the ideal way to learn third position!
Thanks Simon. How do you make the notes sound good on the third position?? They don't sound great for for me. Especially on the A string.
Go closer to the bridge with the bow. Upper registers on the A-String are hard to make sound good. Try closer to the bridge and experiment with bow speed and pressure!

Thank you! I'm a 45 yr. old trying to review beginner basics, learn the third position, and learn vibrato. Can you recommend any technique books for learning vibrato and 3rd position?
There are a lot of books, which introduce the 3rd position, but I am from Germany and not very fond of the English violin schools. But for vibrato... most school books try to evade that topic and leave it to the teacher to solve. I know some places, where you can get ideas from in written form. But to be honest, there is more dense information on TH-cam, than you would find in most of the books. I also have two quite in depth videos about vibrato. If you haven't seen them, here is one link: th-cam.com/video/BIUc-j1iNV4/w-d-xo.html I think the visual demonstration of the technique is in this case quite important!
Check out a booklet called Viva Vibrato. The exercises are fairly self explanatory for self-learners. Also check Violin Lab on TH-cam for Beth's vibrato course. It's only $29 for the stand alone course and I'm really enjoying it. The exercises are actually similar to the Viva Vibrato book, but with video example and played with lovely music. Good luck with your violin adventure.

I'm sorry, I'm a beginner self taught on how to learn violin, so I don't understand why we need to shift position. I understand when to shift for E string when there's a note above the E string on the music sheets, but I don't know how to tell when I should shift for G, D, and A string. Please help me master!!!
Thank's for your question! Usually we do shifts for musical reasons on the lower strings. For example to keep a melody on one string, rather than on two strings. Also the sound-color is different in higher positions on the lower strings, so that sometimes you just want a warmer sound on a higher note and play it on a lower string in higher position.

However, I don't really get about keeping the melody in one string, I get that the fourth finger sounds similar to the next open string, but is the notes that comes after the fourth finger also plays the same like the first and second finger for the higher string?
Yes, correct; the fifth position on the A string, for example, should be the same note as the first position of the e string, and so on. Provided, that the instrument is in tune, that is, of course :D
What about your violin (strings); did you notice a difference in tone/sound between similar notes on different strings? On mine, for example, the D string sounds a bit darker than the A string. The e string, and surprisingly the G string as well, are the ones with most clarity - to my ears, and on my violin. So, when I want to "jump into the foreground" playing a lead part of a melody, I prefer these strings - as far as I can, as beginner :D
But the tonal difference between strings depend on the violin and the strings, as far as I understand. To my mind, it's a nice exploration to find out what tonal palette one's own violin and strings do provide.

Sorry I didn't see your comment somehow. Yes the 1st and 2nd finger on the higher string in first position are the same notes than the 3rd and 4th finger on the lower string. So you can decide by difficulty or sound, which one you prefer in a certain situation. Hope that late answer helps

That is correct if you talk about tone color!
Each violin is very different. Good instruments should be kind of well balanced across the strings, but it is also true that you have a different sound on the different strings, to have more colors to your disposal.

It was very easy for me thank you. Just finding a perfect octave with the open string below. I'm still very much a beginner only having my violin for one month now. So far everything I have learned about playing my violin has come from previous musical experience of playing other instruments and TH-cam. Thanks to people like you Simon.
