Engineers are working to fix the "outage" that is causing Microsoft users across the globe to experience "the blue screen of death", says technology journalist Chris Stokel-Walker.

No, this is just one bug in a patch that went out and didn't manifest itself til it was in the wild. Wouldn't have mattered if it was cloud-based or delivered on a USB key
Being a Luddite, I am still on Windows 7 with Zero Cloud services. I am having no problems at all!!

The danger of a monoculture of software.
On the other hand you have the inefficiency, clunkiness and higher price of a multiculture.
Sometimes, a particular application is critical for some aspect of service; providing security, maintaining some process flow, etc. Lot's of organisations are going to need that tool for that job and organisations will likely be running hundreds of task-specific tools across their organisation, for which there's no alternative, or the alternative will have the same risk. Occasionally a system has a bug, and occasionally it's a show stopper

Couple of years ago my island at very North of Scotland had both cables into it cut. One by fishing boat and one by submarine. We were cut off from world for 1 week. Little english govmt making everyone change to digital telephones which means more chances for being cut off from rest of world. At moment can plug in an analogue fon if there is a power cut. Ridiculous they can see the problems that r possible but still carry on down the road of computerising everything.
I recall that occurring.

I was once fired from my job for installing Linux rather than Microsoft Windows. LOL. This is PAYBACK! LOL.
Every job i've had since 2002 i've used Linux desktops. I would refuse a job if i had to use Windows

Ridiculous. I haven't used cash in about 10 year, maybe longer. Banks also had problems before IT became key to their infrastructure.

@@fdk7014 Microsoft didn’t push it to anyone, CrowdStrike did. CrowdStrike’s agent is not part of Windows it’s a standalone software. Correlation ≠ causation.
My husband's work was hit for a couple of hours.
In Russia you fall out of Windows, the rest of the world Windows falls by itself.
Its not Windows FFS. It is software running on Windows that was at fault - now fixed. The same thing could happen on a Linux platform.
7:00 Rolling back is not going to be just a "snap of the finger" as computer is bluescreening - it won't be able to obtain any updates, unless it is manually fixed as it is guided by CrowdStrike and endusers. Rolling back only prevents those still running machines that aren't yet obtained bad update to be saved from BSOD, others requires most probably IT support to do things. Long weekend with not lot a sleep I would guess to many on IT support.
It'll be interestingt to see when the Common Platform, The HM Court system, goes belly up - I do wonder if it will give details of all the Judges and their home addresses.

A little here in Denmark. Microsoft users of Windows 10, this was triggered by an update.
It's a worldwide thing slowly getting back to normal now.
We have done this to ourselves, we have no one to blame for our reliance on tech.
Now I wonder who was responsible for that and how will that country be held accountable and punished
Good luck - the courts only go after the poor.
It might be faulty Crowdstrike code but the bit corporates know that they should be testing updates small scale before deploying globally.
This happens far too often due to cost cutting.
Google change control and a little investment in test environments would go a long way to reducing this sort of issue

Crowd Strike are hardly "Muppets". They are the biggest IT security company in the United States with a value of 85 billion USD. As the guy at the beginning of the video said it's an update of the Falcon software that appears to have a problem with the code. That said, it will be interesting to see what happens to the value of the company's shares when this is sorted out .

These kind of things are bound to happen for a variety of reasons and yet it seems the IT infrastructure is not prepared for these problems. Quite ridiculous.
That’s because no business will pay for backup systems.
This is what happens when IT gets managed by bean counters rather than engineers. The whole world collapses because of one software "update" and a reliance on centralised / cloud infrastructure.

The internet has made everyone massively rich. If you want to go back to booking your holidays down at a travel agents or looking around 15 shops looking for what you want in a shop then please carry on. The rest of us can use the internet to make our lives easier and richer.

@@TW19567 Yes, but we are independent over the IT systems and cash cannot be banned or wiped from your pocket. Also they cannot controll you so much as they do with digital payments. I checked my bank history and its kinda scarry how much they know about your payments.

Usually, such updates are thoroughly tested to avoid widespread disruption like this.
Its back to yoghurt pots n string. Quils and ink, pigeons and scrolls. Horse n carriage , coal mining , chimney sweeping, man power agriculture, no tv in jails, no nfc payments, no griznegs

I wish journalists would start with the most obvious question. Will my computer work? Will it fix itself? Is it actually a hostile viral attack from China?

Just as well we didn't have a power outage. This would have been disastrous with a power outage combined with severe cold or a heat wave and no means to heat or cool nor running water in many parts.
A power outage in such conditions and no physical currency would add to the chaos.

There's never a straight answer to that type of question.🤔
This is why we advise IT people not to have automatic updates of critical systems before testing properly and why significant updates from providers like Crowdstrike shouldn't be pushed out so close to the weekend

Honestly my first instinct when I heard about this yesterday morning was to laugh hysterically - I feel sorry for everyone whose day was ruined of course but I've watched as random cafes go cashless, all the insurances, TV licence etc goes paperless and I keep thinking this is all just one mistake or hack away from disaster - my card isn't even contactless and I don't have a banking app on my phone - my debit card is a storage system/backup for if I don't have enough cash on me and that system has never gone wrong for me because I have a back-up either way for when the shop is cashless, cash only or the card machines crash - it's worth adding though that this could probably have been avoided if the update was tested properly before releasing it to the entire world and this kind of indicated to world threats that taking down our communication networks is very easy 😬

Windows was not the problem. The Crowdstrike package malfunctioned. The same type of thing could just as easily happen on Linux or MacOS.
