So it must be a generational thing. The French we grew up watching on tv wore berets. And now that we think it is cool and want to wear them, the French eventually stopped wearing them so they won't be mistaken for tourists, i guess. 😅

My Singaporean friend got mistaken as French in a suburban area supermarket, near Disneyland Paris. Because they don't expect tourists to go grocery shopping there and just assume all customers are French, even (or especially) non whites.
The biggest compliment you can get from a French person is them speaking French to you without obvious contempt showing on their faces. The French are really nice if they think you understand French. Their face changing expression when they have to change language is on other level. Italians are the complete opposite, you speak a few words in Italian and don't order cappuccino after 11 or pasta Bolognese and they're impressed. Less so in touristy areas, but still.
Why should what the french think matter? They didnt think the african nations they colonized for their benefit mattered so I say they deserve to be stereotyped as they are built on a foundation of evil and self righteousness. Want me to care? They better show compassion
I speak French yet every time I go to a post office in Paris they tell me to speak proper French, they are only nice if you speak their dialect in the most clean way possible

Yeah I went to Europe last April and in the major cities most Europeans that I talked to speak a little English. Its when we went to smaller areas in Swiss and Austria where a lot of them just spoke German. And a lot of people were so disappointed that Parisians dont really dress up like in the movies or that Paris is like Manhattan but with older buildings and history😭
