Great design and I’d add two improvements: 1) No chemicals! The treated fence board and bitumen will deter our friends even if they are street-homeless and 2) to help them move in it’s a good idea to leave some old twigs, leave and straw near the entrance. Most hedgehogs like to personalise their homes X
Thank you so much for caring about our hedgehogs, every one should have one of these houses and they should also, if possible, cut a hole in their garden fence for these lovely creatures to be able to actually visit you.
Nice build. Two Novembers running I found a baby hedgehog when out walking the dog before I left the UK. I kept them in the conservatory in a dog crate as they were far too small to hibernate and fed them every day. Both must have been the largest, healthiest hedgehogs in the area when I released them in spring. We have hedgehogs here in Fuerteventura too which surpised me.
I’m gonna make one for my garden. I’ve already had two come in my garden so it would be nice to make them a little home for the winter. Thanks for uploading the vid. 👍👏
You are a STAR ! I have shared your video to friends, in the attempt to get them all making these, to protect our Hedgehogs. Mind you, for some reason, the sound effects of you sawing and nailing, going at fast pace, made me giggle.....Well done and thank you for showing us how to do this.
I enjoyed the video, Just one note of caution for anyone building a hedgehog home. Just pulled this from BRITISH HEDGEHOG PRESERVATION SOCIETY The wood can be treated with water based preservative only, on no account should the hedgehog house be creosoted or treated with non-water based preservatives as the fumes remain for a long time and can be very harmful. I have included a link for useful guidelines Hedgehog Homes www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk/leaflets/L5-Hedgehog-Homes.pdf
the whole point of a tunnel is to keep wind out. So build a box as bed room set tunnel on side and cut door way out of side .So they walk up and turn into the box. This makes box so much warmer and out of draft. I cut away banking set in box and lay plastic over box roof and shovel clay soil on top. Leaving only the tunnel entrance on show. Facing away from prevailing wind I then pant Alpine plants on top so no one knows its there. Hedgehogs will seek holes in bankings as easy home under roots. Straw is best with leaves for them to make own bed. Look up tunnel in mid winter see if tunnel is blocked off and you know they are there sleeping in safety. Gardeners friends they are too
Hi, this was nice! It´s time again to build homes for hedgehogs. One thing I would leave out is the painting. These creatures sees with their nose, so it´s important they can "see". On the other hand they don´t care about looks of the cottage, because their eyes are not so good. I´m going to try out your design. I´m using some unpainted leftover wood panel, that has been lying around in the attic for several years. Instead of plywood I will make a board of wood panel and saw it the shape you suggest. I hope you got some cute small inhabitants in your hedgehog cottage by now!
My brothers going to leave something in the entrance to see if it moves. He's going to try and take some pics of it coming and going too but not sure if he'll have any success!
+Rag 'n' Bone Brown it might be too late now, but you can leave an ink trap. Leave a tray of ink at the entrance and line the tunnel with paper. Wait to see if any footprints appear on the paper!
I carnt move them I have buried them in soil / well covered there dens over in soil so its fine 2 remove the hay / is it ok 2 have the 2 dens just 3 ft away from each other what I mean is the entrances r facing each other
all that work myself just got a heavy duty plastic box that the council give u 4 rubbish anyway turn it up side down cut out the entrance cover with soil stuff with hay straw dead leaves jobs a gooden

Great story thanks for sharing
We have 4 resident hogs that live in our garden and we spend many hours filming & watching them .. nice video
Nice design, lots of thought given to hedgehogs comfort and safety.
I have a regular hedgehog visitor to my garden and will definitely be having a go at making this little house. It looks great, thanks.
Brilliant. Get quite a few hedgehogs in our garden including a few young ones, so will definitely be making this one. Thanks
I have literally been following your design today.
Halfway done!
It's taking me a LOT more than 2 hours!
I'm gonna stick a discreet camera in mine :)

Thank you for saving these adorable creatures.

What a wonderful idea! Looks good too but the insulation plans were so thoughtful.

Soooo cute! Damn! You are such a good builder!
I'd recommend adding a little straw or maybe cedar chips to use as bedding/insulation.

+Mikael Lång yep it was inhabited for a while, there's a follow up video on my channel somewhere. Good luck with your build!
I love hedgedog so much
great idea i will try and make one of these....thank you.
Good stuff now the question will the hedgehog actually use it? Would you have to bait it to make sure they do go in?
