Very British Video. Expert in his garden (with shirt and tie on) with a random array of stuff on a table reading questions out of a notebook. Pauses occasionally to lob a ball for his dog. Loving every single one of these.

As much as the plague has been an awful thing, it has given us this.....😉 I don’t suppose that it can continue indefinitely but it’s been a pleasure to behold so far! 👍🏻👍🏻
As mentioned earlier “English Gentleman, wearing shirt and tie, sits in back garden and answers a plethora of questions, whilst occasionally reaching under the table to retrieve a well slobbered ball, in order to fling it up the garden for his dog....”! Absolutely priceless....🤪👍🏻👍🏻
    God save the Curator!

I was about to mention the exact same thing. This is everything great about Great Britain and why I admire them so much as a peoples! It saddens me, even breaks my heart, to know they're being genocided slowly and silently in their ancestral homelands with genocidal levels of displacement migration. When it comes to primary school enrollment they are down to 13% of the population. So it's feasible within our lifetime we will see the end of the English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish. If not our lifetime, then definitely our childrens lifetime, with nearly zero chance of them surviving to our grandchildrens lifetime. Suicidal altruism. I wonder if that's how Rome fell? Listening to weak men and women who wanted them to open their gates to the invaders, because the invaders pretended they weren't just there to loot the place, even though they're clearly not there to be Romans.

When my dad was in the Royal Navy they did an exercise with the dutch navy and back in port visited each others ships. The Dutchmen in the mess dad visited presented the Brits with a bottle of Dutch gin with hand written Dutch on it- he only found out years later that they have written any Dutchmen seeing the by now empty bottle was honour bound to replace it with a full one for the Brits.

Not even faint praise, it's merely a dry insult. "Dutch gin only tastes good when you're already drunk". Damning with faint praise is more subtle. "The Dutch have their own special take on gin, and I'm told that some people are even fond of it!"

As a young trooper from C Sqn, 4/7 RDG, I was attached to AW/MVEE (Armaments Wing / Military Vehicle Engineering Establishment) Kircudbright in Scotland for 2 years1975 to 1977.
One of our major projects was the live firing trials with Chieftain against Chobham Armour plates. They were rigs covered in steel containing the Chobham Armour, there were many varied configurations tested.
The firing was done remotely with the turrets unmanned, and normal sights were not used, we laid on with the Boresight for accuracy +/- 10cm at 200m.
We fired mainly APDS, but sometimes uprated to a higher than normal muzzle velocity and sometimes HESH rounds. Cannot of course comment on the results. As crews we fired more rounds in a week than the average crew fired in a whole year.
The armour didn’t arrive in service on the Challenger 1 for another 8 years in 1983.
As you can imagine security was tight. This was only one of many interesting projects undertaken at that time.

    • @dfxl6587
      @dfxl6587 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Alexander Challis. Sorry, don’t understand your point regarding the Conquerer? We were testing the Chobham armour not the gun.
There were rumours that years before there were during live firing trials with the Conqueror at Kircudbright where it was fired with the dummy Obturators fitted which blew back into the turret killing the crew. In my time the dummy Obturator was a complete plug stopping any chance of of loading a live round.
We had a few Conqueror hulks on the range park, the turret was huge to allow for the loading mechanism which used a brass cased round instead of the bag charges we used.

@John Smith - Eh? What? It's the THIN porcelain that's the GOOD stuff. The thinner the better. Looks fragile, but it's totally shockproof and unbreakable until the cat jumps up and proves otherwise. Thick porcelain is only good for toilet bowls.
People who put milk in a cup before the tea are beings of infinite evil and quite beyond the pale. Ghastly upstarts, they probably think it's necessary to raise one's little finger when drinking. Horrible. Wrong. Ugh. No. Bad. Stop it. Nasty. Like those Merkins who have teabags with strings on them that dangle over the side of the cup like tampons. Ridiculous. No wonder those colonist chappies ended up dumping all that tea in Boston Harbour. (Yes, Harbour, not Harbor.)
I can't afford proper thin porcelain, so I use a 2-pint enamelled tin mug instead. It's not only cat-proof - it bounces when you drop it - but a drink stays hot for half an hour. Good for dunking biscuits, too. (You can wade in to fish-out the soggy bits.)

I do thank you for making GREAT episodes, most notable during these troubling times. I also appreciate your explaining things in depth as I had no idea what Chobham armor is. Now I want to bring up the major reason why American equipment was designed the way it was is that when the US adopted the M1903 Springfield rifle, Mauser took the US government to court and was awarded a royalty on the rifle and parts production. Since then, the US and its defense contractors did not necessarily design the best equipment, but they made sure to avoid all outside patents and copyrights.

    • @Davey-Boyd

If a WWII German tank broke down on the march this would happen. First, the tank pulls out of the column (if able) and puts out a standard 'broken down' marker behind the tank. This is so vehicles in column behind do not think this is a road halt and stop. The column just passes and leaves broken down tank. At this point the crew will be analyzing problem. If they cannot fix problem they sort out the tow cables ready for towing. Always last in a column 'serial' is a light car with a sergeant mechanic (sometimes called the Convoy Maintenance Sgt), and a motorcycle dispatch rider. The sergeant will advise and organise a tow if needed. Comms would be by the dispatch rider. First port of call when tow arrives would be to the units own maintenance section. (Note, if own serial in the column has passed, they wait until a break in the column, they never enter another units serial). At the units own maintenance section (usually but not always at battalion), the vehicle will be evaluated. If fixable then and there, or within a few days it stays with unit. If a longer or complex repair is needed the vehicle will be passed back to either Regiment or even Divisional repair facilities. Even sometimes back to factory for rebuild. Crew is supposed to stay with the vehicle wherever it goes (except factory), but later in the war tended to stay with own unit due to manpower shortages.
Tanks damaged in combat were slightly different. On the attack the Germans were very good (and quick) at recovering damaged vehicles. Where they end up was as above. On the defense, especially during a retreat, it was very difficult or even impossible to make recovery possible. Hence in the later war years the Germans lost many vehicles for minor reasons - lack of fuel, track damage etc as recovery was not possible.
Info comes from Panzer Tactics by Wolfgang Schneider. A great book by the way. (I have simplified it as I do not have the book near me at the moment).
      Davey

You should try rust modules on your tanks and other vehicles. They put a slight electrical charge ( that's supplied by the vehicle's charging system) to the metal that protects the steel. They are popular in North America especially on highway snowplows.

The Gerlich guns. HE versus AP performance balances. A problem seldom addressed in works on topic is excessive barrel wear. That's why Germany went to the "Cone Bore" instead of an all tapered bore, allowing areas of greatest barrel wear to be quickly swapped out for fresh.

As regard to preserving vehicles outside like a gate guard the best I can think is keep them clean where possible. Waxoyl areas that can't be seen and maybe sand and repaint the areas that are on show

Have you tried marine grade epoxy paints for coating tanks, as compared to varnishing them? You'd need to shot blast and prime the surfaces first, so perhaps not best where you have original paintwork, but it'd give you a very hard wearing finish for outdoor displays.
The paint companies should be able to provide a colour match as well - I assume you have the RAL codes or similar for the vehicles, or they should be able to work from samples.
We've used Jotun, Hempel and International paints before. They hold up well in a marine environment on mild steel, so should be applicable to armoured vehicles.

On High Velocity, etc. Another thing to take into account is the weapons in the pipe line. There was less need for new ammo for the US 75mm (M1897 derivative) when there was the 76.2 mm gun replacing it in short order. Also, the US used what they called HVAP (high velocity armor piercing) ammo, which had similar performance to sabot. HVAP was putting a hard, dense tungsten core inside a light aluminum case, which could be fired without any modifications to existing guns. Sabot is almost always used in a non-rifled barrel.
One other comment on high velocity. The Germans went for overkill on their later guns (75mm in the Panther) because they could get a flat trajectory out to a longer range. For the tanker, it means that you don't have to guess the range to the target, which makes your shots much more accurate.

The deciding factor on whether the tools issued with a military vehicle, at least in modern service, are painted or not, is how recently a full tool layout and inspection is conducted in garrison. In garrison. Paint is readily available in garrison. Not so much in combat

If Chobham is anything like the process we underwent with regards to our new carriers, then our "special relationship" with the USA, may of had a bigger impact.
I remember attending a brief around 98/99 and the navy were not impressed about the pressure they were under to use American equipment on the proposed carriers.
Politicians have stepped in to enforce purchases of equipment from USA and sharing of tech for decades.
