The actual person the main character is based on, Yang Kyoungjong, got the most WTF life there is. He was a Korean civilian drafted by the Japanese to fight the Soviets in the Far East Theater; got captured by the Soviets, sent to a labor camp, and then press-ganged into the Soviet Army to fight the Germans; got captured by the Germans and press-ganged into the Wehrmacht to fight the Allies on D-Day; got captured by the Allies and sent to the U.S., where he lived until his death in 1992. It's almost as if the Universe decided to turn his life into a cosmic joke during WWII but left him no worse for wear at the end of it.
He was born on March 3, 1920 in Korea(Since Korea was colonized by Imperial Japan). On 1938, at the age of 18, he was in Japanese prison camp in Manchuria(Manchukuo) he was conscripted to the Kwantung Army of the Imperial Japanese Army. In 1939, he was sent to the Mongolian border to fought against the Soviets during the battle of Khalkhin Gol and then he was captured by the Soviets and he was sent to the Gulags in Siberia. When he was in the Gulags, he was conscripted in the Red Army and sent in Ukraine to fought against the Germans during the 3rd battle of Kharkov and he was captured by the Germans. He was conscripted in the German Wehrmacht or the Heer(Army) and sent to Normandy, Vichy France(German occupied France) to fight against the Americans during the Allied invasion of Normandy(as known as D-Day) then he was captured by the U.S. Paratroopers. He was in the military prison until in the end of the war. He lived in the Illinois, U.S.A until his death in 1992.
The reason this was so heartbreaking, for me at least, was the fact that Jun-Shik was so selfless. Throughout the movie, Kim acts out only in the face to help others, even Tatsuo who would have killed him. I think Tatsuo realizes how selfless Kim's actions were, and when the gravity of the situation comes together, he loses it. That is why I cry, at least.

User different perspective? This is my normal perspective, to be honest. Scenes like this are everything war brings us. Death, destruction, suffering, mental damage on the few "lucky" enough to survivors. I hope one day all of humanity will learn that killing those who stand in your way doesn't make the world better. i think one of the primary things that made this movie AMAZING is the fact that they capitalized on emotion. You wouldn't think they were acting because of how great it was. The movie also showed a lot of relationships full of love and happiness, and when you saw one of the people in that relationship die right infront of the other it breaks your heart because you could see so much beauty in them, and even some of the most insensitive people may cry. Sadly most people would prefer movies when it comes to ww2 movies like Saving Private Ryan or Hacksaw Bridge. The only Asian ww2 movie people know about is letters from Iwo Jima which is slightly another sad movie but My Way takes it to another level. I would of agreed until the ending. Movie was ruined for me nobody would ever do a naval bombardment after their troops have already landed on the beach nor would they throw in paratroopers on top of that. They just decided to throw history out the window for a ridiculous over the top ending.
If you have siblings, consider the sacrifice you would make for them and then watch Taegukgi: Brotherhood of war. It has the same actor Jang Dong-gun (JS Kim). Its probably the best war movie, even ahead of this film.
Oh.. my gosh i don't understand why people can't take this history seriously.. watch the whole movie before saying something.. First of all, Both of them aren't Japanese one is korean and one is Japanese. First, Korea was colonized by Japan in early 1900s and was forced to become Japanese soldiers. Then During the Russo Japanese War, Japanese soldiers lost once and captured by Russians, forced to fight for Russia's War against Germany. Then Russia lost to Germany in a battle then got captured by German soldiers and fought as being Nazis. Then those German soldiers who got captured fought Americans in Normandy. And yes, it is a true story. And at the end of the movie, the reason Korean guy is giving the Japanese guy the name chain is that U.S. was allied with Korea at the time and Japan was their enemy. Because the Korean guy did not want his Japanese friend to get killed by American soldiers, he's saying that Japanese guy is now gonna live with the Korean guy's name.
I watch this movie every so often and every single time the ending gets me. Some people will be ignorant and criticize something they've never seen. This is easily in my top 5 favorite movies ever, it's the only movie that's ever made me cry.
Yang Kyoungjong (March 3, 1920 - April 7, 1992). Conscripted by the Japanese, then the Russians, then the Germans, then settled in Illinois, America after the war. He literally fought across the globe from East to West.
The ending 😢 One of the best movies I ever watched! Hope more people around the world discover this masterpiece. This movie has a great meaning. It's a war movie but it's also about forgiveness and reconciliation.
I am just saying this movie was good, but what made this film was the ending. These two men hated each-other, one took the other's life away. But through obstacle after obstacle, they stand together. They said "we will run together", but that didn't come to be... in the physical realm. As a final safe, one gives his name to protect his friend. Then in the last scene, the Japanese man runs under his friend's name... They ran together *Man tears were shed*
The ending was like a punch to the gut for me - wasnt expecting that. The Korean guy giving his identity to his Japanese friend. That makes the opening scene even more poignant.
Japanese troops were captured while fighting Russians. Soviets send them as cannon fodder to the Germans. Germans capture Soviet troops and forced them to fight as they did with many other men from other countries(The two soldiers shot by the Americans in Saving Private Ryan were Czechs forced to fight). Japan had drafted Koreans from an occupied Korea to fight on their behalf, hence why one of the character was korean.
+Triple A when they capture him, they thought he was Korean but not Japanese, because his other friend gave him his name tag and told him that from now on he is a Korean, and says that if he told them he is Japanese, the Americans might kill him

Just a little heads up...the Olympics was originally supposed to be hosted by Japan...but because of the war, it didn't happen. After the war the Olympics committee didn't allow Germany or Japan to attend the 1948 Olympics. This was Korea's first official Olympics and arguably when Korea wasn't officially split but a one independent country.
This movie may not be the best in terms of historical accuracy, but man, I loved this movie so much I rewatched it multiple times. Such a great, GREAT emotional masterpiece. It teaches that even though your countries hate each other, you can still love each other.
Exactly. The inaccuracies were terrible, the rest of the movie was a work of art. It also brought about the German's Ostlegion/Foreign Legion where no Hollywood film ever dared to show! Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese, White Army Russian, Indians, Africans... imagine how many legendary stories like Yang's, happened throughout history that have yet to be told. The Germans had plenty of need for manpower and thus they took recruits from all over. The Beach Soccer/Football scene was amazing, and to think America was still segregated amongst its ranks at the time. History is priceless. I just wish they did a better job with the wardrobes, battles, time frames and military regulations.
When you realise you have always looked at one sides point of view and should check all the sides point of view to really know everyone's story. War is a larger scale of conflict that always evolves into something else greater or lesser.
Poor guys, they are first drafted into the Japanese army forced to fight the soviets in the Mongolian border. Then they are drafted into the red army fighting Germans. Then somehow join the German army fighting Americans on d-day.
@Eruult Chuluunbaatar It is called saving face, and it happens everywhere. East or west. Toxic masculinity and keyboard social justice in America. Honor killings in Turkey. Politics anywhere. Court systems anywhere.
At the end of the video, they are laughing and running together. but actually they didn't get along well when they first met. Japanese man was the grandson of the general, Korean was persecuted by him. Japanese man became officer of his own will, Korean man was forcibly drafted and under the Japanese man's troop. So when they were taken to Soviet prisoners, they fought until one side almost die. But the korean character's personality was so generous that it was hard for even koreans to understand(he lost his family and friends because of japan). So the film did not receive good reviews in terms of composition(and historical, military evidence). Whatever, the story of Asian who was taken to Normandy is very unique. After watching the movie, I cried. How ironic is it the two finally became friends and the Japanese wailed after losing Korean friend?
In the 1900s, Korea failed to modernize and Japan occupied Korea and made it a colony. Japan conscripted Koreans in its colonies into the Japanese army and fought in the war. Koreans who were conscripted into the Japanese army were forced to give their lives for Japan. It is a very sad story.
wow this is great acting and great special effects, and seemingly a great story line how come i never heard of this movie until now? i am gonna watch the whole thing asap^^
The same goes for me. One of the most touching and tear-inducing movies I have ever watched in my life. Two men who used to be rivals and enemies of one another in the end forgave each other and sacrificed for one another. The one who survived competed in honor of his friend who sacrificed his life for him to emerge unharmed from the war.
Hung Vu I completely agree. People tend to bitch about the historical accuracy but that isn't the point of this movie. The point is this wonderful tale of friendship with two former enemies coming and enduring together as friends. Really beautiful.
Agree. I don't accord attention to the accuracy of the movie, but rather on the fascinating life journey of these 2 men, how they ended up in a place thousands of miles away from their homeland, and how in the end, they overcame the bitter memory about their past to reconcile with one another, and the touching sacrifice one of them made on behalf of the other, and the other requited the sacrifice by competing in the Olympic in honor of his friend.
+John Harrison Best part about this movie is base on a true story. Of a Korean solider who got conscripted and fought. In Japanese, Soviet, and German armies. Before being saved and captured by the Americans.
what this scene (German army running away from bombing) tells is not only German soldiers are victims but is every person involved in ww2 is victim. They killed each other just because their commanders ordered
Blame their dumbass leaders who sit comfortably at their chair eating fancy food while civilians starve to death and soldiers killing each other meaninglessly
Actually they started as friends. Tatsuo began hating on koreans since his grandpa was killed by the korean freedom fighter. He just sees jun shik as the representation of it (the people who killed his grandpa).
Americans capturing the korean soldier on Normandy: Ok, buddy, we have good news and bad news! Korean soldier: Ok, tell me the bad news first. Americans: We are taking you prisoner and will ship you to a POW camp in the US. You will not fight for our army like you did for the Japanese, Soviets or Germans. Korean soldier: Ok... if these are the bad news, what are the good news? Americans: You will live through the war, be treated fairly according to the Geneva convention and will live peacefully in US for the rest of your life. Korean: Ok, deal! Americans: Damn, we really need to work on our "bad news" telling.
Maybe it's a kind of Mission Impossible. What we can do is just realize and try to accept that we are two differences of a kind. That's way we can live side by side peacefully, learn from Netherlands, Belgium, German, Louxembourg, France... many of a kind yet living in harmony side by side.
oh my gosh..... I loved every second of this amazing movie! Every time I watched this ending I cried. WHY DID JUN SHIK HAVE TO DIE!!!!???? ( If anybody is wondering, you can watch this here for free seamovie.net/watch/EdZADjGp-my-way.html )

Many people don t see that the only thing that they see is the enemy and not a human
If you're a tough guy, make sure you have onions sitting near so you can blame your tears on something..
No matter how many times I watch the movie, I always cry at the ending...
This scene always gives me chills, especially the part where he is running
When you realise you have always looked at one sides point of view and should check all the sides point of view to really know everyone's story.
War is a larger scale of conflict that always evolves into something else greater or lesser.
Best bromance relationship in movie everrrr 😢😢😢😢
Poor guys, they are first drafted into the Japanese army forced to fight the soviets in the Mongolian border. Then they are drafted into the red army fighting Germans. Then somehow join the German army fighting Americans on d-day.
And it was based on a real person
+ITS Something in real life, he did survive and lived in the US until he died
+ITS Something It was inspired by the real person's story
hanrinch hahahahaha sounds like being an epic douchebags
amazing story really
Korea and Japanese can also be friends
The copy and paste guy
뭐
Agreed 😁
황현 agreed forget the past that the imperial japanese era now it a democracy japan
@Eruult Chuluunbaatar It is called saving face, and it happens everywhere. East or west. Toxic masculinity and keyboard social justice in America. Honor killings in Turkey. Politics anywhere. Court systems anywhere.
But not the Chinese huh?
First comes the chills, second comes the man tears.
this movie proves no matter how much you hate someone, one day he will be the one giving his life for you eventully
One of the greatest movie I ever watched..
I remember when my brothers and I first watched this, we all were acting like we were yawning at the end to hide our crying at the end. Fuck war 😭
How ironic is it the two finally became friends and the Japanese wailed after losing Korean friend?
tear drops starting to fall when tatsuo cried, and scream :(
War can turn your worst enemy into your best friend.
🇯🇵🤝🏻🇰🇷
LETS STOP HATE! 😔
Yeah
Now now
Yes say that to Korean people.
@@xinhaiii1911 Yes I don't object to that Okay….. but Only you can see who started the hate.
Really? Let's find out from the beginning of hatred and provocations…. who started it.
This scene really hit home. I have no shame saying I cried to this movie!
when tatsuo cried its so emotional..
The only movie that have ever made me cry..
Girls: Do boys even have emotions? He didn't cry at the Titanic!

Still crying in 2023...😢😢😢
this made me cry... this movie took to me through a roller coaster of emotions
It's a great movie and I really cried a river watching it! I love Jang Dong Gun!
Awesome film! That last seen really got to me. Niagara falls. :)
I get goosebumps watching this movie everytime
No, I’m not crying. I have a branch stuck in my eye and my heart.
wow this is great acting and great special effects, and seemingly a great story line how come i never heard of this movie until now? i am gonna watch the whole thing asap^^
I like how heavy caliber artillery missiles have the area of effect up to 1 meter in radius. Or in diameter? Ok, two feet blast radius.

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 really I cried a lot after watch this movie thanks for Ur info about this guy💚💛💚💙
This is the only movie I have ever cried to...
Agree. I don't accord attention to the accuracy of the movie, but rather on the fascinating life journey of these 2 men, how they ended up in a place thousands of miles away from their homeland, and how in the end, they overcame the bitter memory about their past to reconcile with one another, and the touching sacrifice one of them made on behalf of the other, and the other requited the sacrifice by competing in the Olympic in honor of his friend.
movie suggestion: Tae guk gi: Brotherhood of War
watch 71 into the fire
Man that soundtrack is beautiful, does anyone know where it's available?
Look up my way soundtrack

Here it is (soundtrack from running scene)
Best WWII movie I saw better than saving privite Ryan
Hey HD Orange I subbed to ur channel I actually like ur vids
+John Harrison
Best part about this movie is base on a true story. Of a Korean solider who got conscripted and fought. In Japanese, Soviet, and German armies. Before being saved and captured by the Americans.
This scene before Carentan
you have to try letters from iwo jima
but this movie is very inaccurate saving private Ryan has more realistic fighting
My favorite movie of all time!
what this scene (German army running away from bombing) tells is not only German soldiers are victims but is every person involved in ww2 is victim. They killed each other just because their commanders ordered
There are no evil soldiers just evil teachers/commander they just follow their order
Blame their dumbass leaders who sit comfortably at their chair eating fancy food while civilians starve to death and soldiers killing each other meaninglessly
True, smy-nim
No fear no pain
They were enemies at first, now they're inseperable comrades.
Actually they started as friends.
Tatsuo began hating on koreans since his grandpa was killed by the korean freedom fighter.
He just sees jun shik as the representation of it (the people who killed his grandpa).
I always cry when I see this scene...
This was actually a fantastic movie.
fuck me man gets me every time the japanese language and screaming makes it more powerfull fuck war man
It was Korean
cRownn Hm.
itsThatTime It was Japanese
Korean drama doesn’t make me cry but this does
That music really takes this to a new level
awwww, the Koreans wanted to achieve their goals but one of them died, I'm about to cry about this ;(
I first learned about the story of these men, visiting Utah beach i 2014. Amazing story!
Love your enemy’s as you love yourself
진짜 전쟁이 참혹하다는것을 뼈저리게 만드는 영화 같습니다

Like malaysia and indonesia.. Plss unite
Maybe it's a kind of Mission Impossible. What we can do is just realize and try to accept that we are two differences of a kind. That's way we can live side by side peacefully, learn from Netherlands, Belgium, German, Louxembourg, France... many of a kind yet living in harmony side by side.
