I've got the same critter. Came installed in a 1977 Bronco, with matching speakers of the day. It now is mounted under the bench in my shop. You know, I don't think I have ever played a cassette in it. The tuner, on the other hand, angers my wife because it will receive stations she has never heard before. "How is that possible..." she says. Well done!
I live in NW Indiana....so back in about 1978 I bought my first NEW KP500 at "In Sound Stereo" in St.John Indiana. It was 139.95$ brand new.Still have all the paper work and the booklet. So I owned this and installed this in about 5 vehicles that I owned late 70s.....up to 1989.In about 1983 I met a guy who had many flea market booths throughout our area.He had a KP for sale for 25 bucks ….but said the left channel was fried. As my other friend was an electronics wiz.....he showed me how to unsolder then re-install the finals in these. So I bought the unit from this guy …..talked him down to 15 bucks.....because the unit looked very clean. So I walked through there again weeks later and he had another KP and the 8 track version too.He sold me those both for 45 bucks. Both needed cleaned and had bad belts but finals were good.So I asked WHERE DO YOU GET THESE.He told me he has about 22 more units that most have bad channels....and worn belts......So me and a friend purchased every unit he had.....for a total of 26 cassetes and 3 more 8-track models. We met him in at his home in Lake Station and tested each and everyone then noted what the problems were. Then in Hammond,Indiana at this one electronics place where you could order anything...…..we bought out every belt and final amp they had and several tubes of heat sinc grease.....like about 338 bucks worth. So that summer I was still at my parents place and used their garage to repair every unit I had.I was selling these like hot cakes.Made great money and I still have 2 of these today. The 8 -track models are very rare I was told.
I had one coupled to a booster installed on my jeep. I remembered replacing one of the amplifier chips, Matsushita AN214Q which is obsolete now and quite expensive. It's an awesome car audio, the sound quality is great. It's a nice collection to have.
i've seen this deck in comp form and buddy back in 79 used to have three gm-120's,two eq's,40 watt for the tweets with pioneer 6by9's,and pioneer comp speakers, all packed under the dash of a 74 nova and rear window, thats where you get the best bass,or any big car trunk,he had this set up around early 80's there were more comp's but this is when i was12 years old,iam 52 now.and those were the good old day's for me.i really like the vintage pioneer car deck's.peace out.
I remember those back in the day. They were all the rage for the cars back then that rarely had FM or a tape deck. They were good sounding and elegant looking.
Wow! Blast from the past! I had this in my 1974 Dodge Dart back in 1978 or so. My buddy had one in his 1973 AMC wagon. Great tuner and good sounding tape player. Love it.
I had one of these in the glove box of my 74 FJ40 Landcruiser along with a matching Pioneer PA. It had one of the most stable and reliable cassette mechanisms ever made. It took a terrible beating on the washboard west desert roads. The FM sensitivity was also superb.
I have never had one in a car, but in the mid-1980's, my aunt's boyfriend gave me one of those. I hooked in up in my room and used it as a bedside stereo. I loved the radio dial glow. The tape player was rather good, too.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I always wanted one of these, but as a kid in the 70s, $200 was out of my price range (about $850 in today's $$$), especially when saving for college. While watching your video, one of the first things that came to mind was something that I did own... Jensen Triax car speakers. Interesting how you referred to them near the end of the video. Too bad the Jensens had a tendency to blow out the midrange & tweeters. I'd love to hear a Pioneer/Jensen setup today.
I just changed the busted lamps to LED's three months ago, that's during the lockdown here, kept the LEDs to a minimum illumination to preserve the warm look..
This Is The Best Looking ( Tuner Glows And Attractive ) and Sounds Great Ever In The History Of Automotive Sound System. Got Three Of These And One TP-900. One Of It Is Installed In Our 2015 Nissan Van. Can Bring Back Memories On The Road Playing ABBA, Airsupply, Scorpions Etc,,, Though This Was Installed In Our 1980 Toyota Corona ( Barned ) Until 2005. Great!!!
My God. I bought one brand new. Still have it in the 70 fastback mustang. Didn't think I would ever see another one. The belt is the only thing I've ever replaced on it. The tuner is phenomenal. A few years after I added a sparkomatic amplifier to mine and WOW. It was a system for it's time! LoL. Still rocking Cool video. Thanks
I did in fact have one of these. They were a hell of a rig at the time. Wish I still had it. It got Robbed our of my truck. For chits and grins I priced one on Fleabay. HOLY CHIT. They wanted some serious money for the thing.
I had both the 8 track and cassette version. Hooked up to Cricket dome axials. I was the king at bonfire keg parties! I think I still have them both somewhere. I may dig them out and brush them off after recapping the SX-1250 I picked up at the dump, still working! You may get a panicked email from me asking for help. Great videos. I am just getting back into electronics, pretty rusty actually and watching your videos is like being back in school! Thanks.
I had that same radio in my 1971 GTO Judge,it was called the Pioneer Super Tuner. I lived near a 50 thousand watt FM transmitter in Haverhill Ma on 92.5 and wanted to pick up 92.3 WPRO FM in Providence RI. No radio that I bought could ever do this until I bought this one. The radio was $299.99 and the brand new GTO Judge was $3,300,I wish I had both of them now. The radio was bought @ U-DO-IT electronics in Needham MA
smartasset.com/investing/inflation-calculator#Ww242BRop7 Says that the equivalent of your 1971 GTO Judge today would be above $20,000 (did you buy it used or new?) and that this '71 $300 tuner/tape player would be $1860.00 now. No wonder Tony couldn't get ahold of it for ages! There are more famous inflation calculators on the web, but I couldn't remember their names, let alone URLs.
So xraytonyb, how do car audio amp makers get, say 100 Watts (50W or less actual watts) from a car battery? I know of the Maxim charge pump chips, but can't see them putting out much power, even with huge caps on the outputs. The point here is to trade off current for voltage, right?
a car battery can supply a load of amps plus the 100+ from your alternator. if you mean aftermarket amps, like 500W and even more. they have what is basically a very big DC-DC boost converter inside them. i have an alpine that runs on +/-20V. positive and negitive 20V from a single 12V rail. MOST class D car amps actually use a single supply on the inside. say +60V. most class AB's use a split rail
I have a few car stereos that I have pulled out of wreaked car's at the auto wreaking yard... One is the older Alpine CD tuners from a time when an Alpine unit couldn't be mistaken for another brand... Black face will those beautiful lime green buttons and back lighting... Another one that came out of a Mazda 929 from the 1980's... Cassette tuner and and the factory fitted two power amplifiers in the boot of the car... The real beauty of this Clarion system is that the cassette deck door is setup like a home Hifi deck.. It has a lot of features including a 5 band graphic equaliser with led's on the sliders.. Double din size... The two power amplifiers also by Clarion are a work of art on the inside.. There was one engineer in Clarion that I can safely say that he took his skills to the next level. I looked up the power ic's and they are rated at 25x2 for each amplifier... There's a few others which I won't go to much into the details but I have been planning to mount them in a polished timber case that can accommodate the unit, power supply, speakers and amplifiers if they needed them to drive the speakers like the Kenwood cassette tuner (krc950) that I purchased new in the 90's for $1200 Australian which only has 3 pre-out's. I'm hoping to end up with something similar to the old table top radios of yesteryear... Actually I just remembered that I also have a Pioneer cassette deck and the matching power amplifier of 70's vintage I think... Almost forgot that I have it somewhere... Hmmmm I have my work cut out for me...
I've got one of these.. I used it for my home tuner for a long time.. I already had an FM antenna (Radio Shack 12' directional) on a 40' mast. I hooked this up to that antenna and it was really a "SuperTuner". It still works, but I'm sure I need a belt. I just ran the output to the aux input of my receiver and had no problems. I remember this was a lot louder than my stock AM radio in my 67 Mustang. The speakers were two way pioneer 6 x 9s. The speakers must have been high sensitivity or efficiency.
Another thing I did to my set up that I had for years.Remember those 6x9" Mindblower Speakers.Well the amps are mounted to the magnets on the back. When the speakers go bad.....the amps can be removed and turn almost any stereo to a killer system. For years people always asked me how and why and where can I find these amps.
I used to rebuild that mech in my sleep all day long for people. Folks played the hell out of those cassette players till the capstan bearing damn near fell out. The AN214Q ICs were kind of delicate by today's standards. We used to buy them in bulk. The tuner was what they later called the Super Tuner. This version 1 had no mono blend and while it sounded awesome in urban areas it was a bit dicey at best in the hills compared to the later iterations of the Super Tuner,. Also if you like software based test gear but like to build your own stuff check out GNU Radio Companion. If you haven't seen it yet you will absolutely drool when you see what you can do with it.
Hey, Since the FM channels are 200 khz bandwidth, changing the 3 pin 2 pole crystal filter to a smaller 280 khz or 180 khz provides adjacent channel rejection and more quiet with modern adjacent FM stations. Since there is no PLL in the KPX 600 or KP 500, I often retuned after the radio warms up. I first had one of these in a Chevelle in 1978. Oh yeah.
Oh man, that's so easy to work on. The only automotive radios I ever get sent to me for repair is combo 8 track, CB radio, AM/FM radios. Basically take that radio and stick a CB radio in it. Talk about a nightmare to work on. Circuit boards stacked 3 or 4 deep. Should make a nice little bench radio.
God blessings sir its a great modification it came to life again from 70's to present i still got one of this unit and i like to modified it like the way you did so i ask you a favor if you can send me the schematic diagram that you make and the schematic diagram of this unit and this IC AN214 where can i buy this thanxz stay safe God Bless!
Had the 8 track version of this unit.. It was known as the SUPER TUNER.. I had it paired up with a set of 6X9 MIND BLOWER speakers that had a 100 watt amp bolted to the bottom of each speaker.. They were loud enough to make your eats bleed..
Those are cute decks, I think most people like them because of the big round FM dial that lights up, That's why I've always liked them since the 70's, What was thinking was it would be cool to have one of those, With the Aux input but then on the back add one of those 12v amps boards they have on aliexpress/ebay/amazon , They'll put out 100W a channel, but even 20W at 8ohms would be nice, Build a box for it etc dress it up :) , Ok I can see you point as a little test radio, I would use it a small home stereo :)
Hi, I have my original Pioneer KP-250 car stereo and want to do a similar project as you did, great job. I got the plate with the colored wires. I need the connection diagram with color coded wires. Would you know where to find the diagram? Thanks
I had a TP-900 model, which is identical but had 8-Track. I sold it to get a KPX-600 (had separate, external amplifier options including a 30 W RMS/Ch amp (GM-120). I still have them. I modified the tape EQ section to be 70uS instead of 120uS, so it plays Chrome/Metal tapes. I also hacked in a DBX decoder (Concord HPQ-90) However, if you want to modify this KP-500 for 70uS playback, just change two resistors. Your vid is fuzzy, but I believe they are R7 and R8. They are in the feedback network on the tape head preamp ICs. Currently they are 12k. (In the KPX-600, they were actually 11k) Change them to 6.8k and your Chrome/Metal tapes will play flatter.
Great great great. Finaly i found someone technically enough doing aux input in kp500. I have one and i will try to follow your steps on this mod. First i will buy the needed components, wish me lucky and congratulation for the amazing vídeo.
that is a poor man's highend car stereo in our country during the 70's-80's-90's, almost all jeepneys pub were using it, and they're like disco mobile.
I had one of these radios and I loved it but returned it because it did not fit in my car. At night, it was so cool the way it lid up and the dial made it look that much cooler. I just bought a Kennwood car receiver and I hate because if does not have any dials other than the volume. I'm very tactile and these new digital car radios really suck. I wish I can build my own car receiver. It would look a lot like the KP-500.
I still have my KP-500 that I bought on July 3, 1978, with No Wires Ever Cut, stored in its original box and packing with all the paperwork and purchase receipt. The tape head is worn out because I mostly used that function, playing cassettes I recorded in my Teac A-170S, which I also still have in Its original box. I'm glad I had the sense to keep everything from the beginning! I STRONGLY dislike your permanent modifications. The equivalent could have been done with a little creativity that would not ruin the originality of the unit.
I can remember when this car stereo came out I wanted one badly but when they was new they were $349 now and 2020 they go for anywhere from $500 to $800 bucks they are very expensive vintage stereo they were belted very well with exceptional tuners and amplifiers
Actually.. Here in Australia we have the Holden Commodore (it's badged as a Chevy in the US I think.. Don't quote me on that LoL) they have a double din unit which is kinda crappy but it's power amplifier is mounted on a separate PCB at the back of the unit and it's easy to remove it and connect. Super cheap 4 channel amplifier and the power ic's are upgradeable.. I am planning to high pass two channels for tweeters and Low pass the other two channels for an active two way bench speaker system... The completed setup should sound very swag... Just an idea if anyone wanted to recycle something that is going to be crushed and sent off to China to be melted into something else... Everybody is planting tree's but we need to save the amplifiers of the world.... And while you are at the auto wreaking yard you might as well grab a few SRS control modules because they are fitted with military grade capacitors.... Just have a look at EEVBLOG'S tare down of a Hyundai module. Awesome capacitor and the special cap holder which is designed to power the airbag system if other power was cut... Worth a look..
How did you come to the value of 2.2 microfarads, I suppose you don't know but you could boil that belt and shrink it back to its natural size for Tape Deck? Put it in a glass jug of hot water partially covered and stick it in the microwave for 15 minutes on full. And to help the wow and Flutter what's good on turntables as well put it in a bag of talcum powder shake it off then put it on. stops the belt sticking and gives it grip. You need to service the whole mechanism oil it up and grease it. looks nice? think you could still get it in a modern car where the touch screen is, I think it's the right width and get a smartphone below it to fill in just nicely. Not really 12 volts it's 14.5 volts on a car it's operating through the alternator would be producing around 14 volts
I agree he's been watching 12 volt. Untill I saw that little trick I'd never even heard of it-and I've been in the electronics hobby for 30+ years. Have yet to try it.....
The later KPH-500 fit perfectly in the OEM spot in my 1971 Datsun 510. That with a pair of GM20 amps, TS168s in the doors with extension rings and Kricket 6x9s in the rear deck made for a really nice setup.
Hello! Can you help me with my Equalizer Kenwood 4042? The subwofeer output there is no sound coming out! Only in the rear and front output. Whta it could be???
I have a KPX 600 pioneer cassette car stereo that needs work do u work on anyones? It's hard to find teck's to service them. I have the service manual also.
Hi tony. On 15:25 you make a mistake, you show the wrong wires on the pre-amp board. Instead showing the channel wires you show one channel and one ground, this mistake will burn some components like i do :( . That´s ok, i fixed and made the right connection here.
If those Minimus 7s are still about 8 ohms, then the amps put out 11W or a bit less at reasonable distortion levels. The TDA7577 can handle 1 ohm loads and has I2C to talk to computers, turn it off for use with this "Super Tuner".
Tony, I think you got the math wrong. It's 12V peak-to-peak, not center-to-peak. As such, my math says the maximum theoretical RMS sinewave is 4.24 volts (5.94 center-to-peak). (4.24V^2)/4 ohms = 4.49 watts. At 13V (what's shown on the datasheet), it would be a bit under 5.3 watt.
What they did is adding an offset to an AC signal (mV) to raise the voltage level to be able to pass a diode (without loss) with AC+DCoffset as (fluctuating) DC and to avoid the diode cut off one portion of the AC wave. That is why the signal is distorded without DC offset/bias because you hear only a portion (postive only) of the wave. The DC offset will be later on removed by a decoupling capacitor that blocks DC and then you get the original wave. I did similar with a CD4066 (Bilateral Switch) that is not designed to pass negative signals but by adding an offset it can do the job and after it remove the offset by using a decoupling capacitor. This not ideal because any noise in the DC can transfer into the audio signal. This solution is not recommended. I can understand why Pioneer did it this way (probably to save on costs to avoid extra audio chip) but it is a littlebit cheap for a brand like Pioneer. About the added 12V to the signal, I think it must be lower than that and must be protected by resistor. Now you pump the full 12 volts potentional into the audio signal, that is not a good idea. I think a simple voltage divider (with high resistor values) will do, 6 volts or something like that.
I have a vintage car that I can put one of these in but it doesn't have AM so it won't work for me. I like listening to Sports on the radio hence the need for AM.
People like the sound quality of AN 214 ic amp., but this is out of stock on the market. They are selling this kind of car stereo for 180 US dollar, but it was so expensive for buying second hand car stereo like this.
I had one installed in my 1972 Vauxhaul Firenza with an Audiovox power amp with EQ. The Vauxhaul is long gone but I still have the KP500
I've got the same critter. Came installed in a 1977 Bronco, with matching speakers of the day. It now is mounted under the bench in my shop. a gorgeously designed unit. timeless

What everybody wants to see is that red FM light, then you’ll know it’s sounding like a dream. Best pioneer radios ever these kp500
People liked them because THEY SOUNDED CLEAN and fine. My ears would be happy with the same today.
Love it.

I bought one of these in 1978 and installed it in 1976 Audi Fox.
matched with some Jensen tri ax/co ax speakers back in the day...sure beat the lame factory radios
I was just given one of these and being able to have RCA inputs alone would be amazing

Holy,I had one of these new! I recall it was very powerful for the small amp it had. What a cool vid.
I got one connected to a clarion eq300 and some JBL speakers on a 1986 c10 shot bed it sounds better than any modern sound system great kp-500
And that 4 watts is why most ppl bought some kind of booster eq back in the day. Usually transformer coupled that did 30 w/ch.

These were very popular in my country Trinidad and Tobago!! They were often stolen from unattended vehicles and sold black market.
Yes there are..
So, have u got one for sale?
Have 3 of them to modify to USB like your channel bro keep up the good work

I always enjoy your video's. Good explanations of what is going on, I hope I can absorb some of the information. Thanks for posting.
I still have mine from 1979. I'm the second owner. Looking to get it fired back up again!
I think these radios had the best tuner ever, even better than Pioneers sx-1280/1250 as well as any Marantz , seriously it's that good
Hey, Since the FM channels are 200 khz bandwidth, changing the 3 pin 2 pole crystal filter to a smaller 280 khz or 180 khz provides adjacent channel rejection and more quiet with modern adjacent FM stations. Since there is no PLL in the KPX 600 or KP 500, I often retuned after the radio warms up.
I first had one of these in a Chevelle in 1978. Oh yeah.
watching this again...greetings from the Philippines
As if by magic the perfect music comes through
Oh man, that's so easy to work on.
I remember the Cobra AM FM CB cassette. Imagine having one of those serviced at today's rates.
Remember it well. The TP900.
It sounded great. AKA SUPERTUNER
Really nice unit and a great mod! Thanks for sharing. Interesting software.
hi I have 2 equalizers clarion 300 eqb the leds don't work I can send them to fix them thanks. Nice video clip
These were great car stereos. Alpine made a similar underdash of the same vintage that was its equal.
I think I remember that too.
Awesome vid man!.had a suprtuner II back in the day through a pair of Pioneer TSX9's was a great sounding rig!
Wonderfull video, I had 2 pf those on different editions, i'm putting on it a Bluetooth receiver ando a new set of speakers
I had one going into Pioneer mind blower speakers.
Thank you sir for providing us a schematic diagram to us. Godbless
3 or 4 watts is fine with good speakers. i.e. High efficiency speakers.
Great great great. Finaly i found someone technically enough doing aux input in kp500. I have one and i will try to follow your steps on this mod. First i will buy the needed components, wish me lucky and congratulation for the amazing vídeo.
I make contact from e-mail
Ow . i damage my kp 500. 😢
I owned this kind of car sterio way back 1990's
Oh man, I had 1 of those in my 1980 Chevrolet El Camino SS,KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK MAN.
that is a poor man's highend car stereo in our country during the 70's-80's-90's, almost all jeepneys pub were using it, and they're like disco mobile.
What volts of the tuner supply. I test my stereo the is only 9v and the switch is 5volts only... It is normal?
GREAT VID how hard is it to replace a loudness button? thx,,i have a extra switch
This was a great deck.
I had one.
This video was awesome! thanks for sharing.
I still have my KP-500 that I bought on July 3, 1978, with No Wires Ever Cut,
stored in its original box and packing with all the paperwork and purchase receipt.
The tape head is worn out because I mostly used that function,
playing cassettes I recorded in my Teac A-170S, which I also still have in Its original box.
I'm glad I had the sense to keep everything from the beginning!
I STRONGLY dislike your permanent modifications.
The equivalent could have been done with a little creativity that would not ruin the originality of the unit.
Not too hard to fix......just take your time.and know how to solder
In the 70's mine was 24 watts 12 per side then add amps 10 band or better u have something sweet and u can do the same
I can remember when this car stereo came out I wanted one badly but when they was new they were $349 now and 2020 they go for anywhere from $500 to $800 bucks they are very expensive vintage stereo they were belted very well with exceptional tuners and amplifiers
YES I HAVE MY POLYESTER SHIRT ON WITH WITH PLATFORM SHOES
Hey John, you have been watching 12 Volt.
Very helpfull the subject of belt. It has passed from 108mm to 114mm diameter, thanks :(
This was a great video and a VG idea.So I subbed. Thanks for the info sir...!!!
Typical car voltage is closer to 13.8 VDC so maybe the claimed wattage is accurate after all ? Love the videos :)
Most older car stereos only put out a couple of watts on an 8 ohm load. They only had 12V to work with.
And how many volts do we have to work with now?
Hello! Can you help me with my Equalizer Kenwood 4042?
The subwofeer output there is no sound coming out! Only in the rear and front output.
Whta it could be???
How did you put mp3 connect at the back of this stereo?I got one KA-500 but i need to use mp3 instead of cassette.
Can i buy your Pioneer KP500 ? please
I have a KPX 600 pioneer cassette car stereo that needs work do u work on anyones? It's hard to find teck's to service them. I have the service manual also.
Hello just checking in with you
Hi tony. On 15:25 you make a mistake, you show the wrong wires on the pre-amp board. Instead showing the channel wires you show one channel and one ground, this mistake will burn some components like i do :( . That´s ok, i fixed and made the right connection here.
FREEBIRD !!!
Yep, period correct, recorded in 1973 by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
27:51 TDA7850, STPA003, TDA7577 can do about 22W into 4 ohm from 12V rail
If those Minimus 7s are still about 8 ohms, then the amps put out 11W or a bit less at reasonable distortion levels. The TDA7577 can handle 1 ohm loads and has I2C to talk to computers, turn it off for use with this "Super Tuner".
the TDA7577 is pretty neat as at 1 Ohm mono it can do over 70W. same with the 7580 and STPA series, 2 ohm can pull 42-44W x4. not bad
You are absolutely correct. As this is a single rail power supply, your calculations are correct. My mistake! Thanks for the catch!
What about a CD changer
repair tutorial please.
That is only 15 watts 7.5 per channel we must be a modefied the audio for the best sound.
I have a vintage car that I can put one of these in but it doesn't have AM so it won't work for me. I like listening to Sports on the radio hence the need for AM.
saan ba ang shop nenyo anong Lugar sa maynila
I have a question sir ...where can I buy that model ...
Pm me
People like the sound quality of AN 214 ic amp., but this is out of stock on the market. They are selling this kind of car stereo for 180 US dollar, but it was so expensive for buying second hand car stereo like this.
Had one new!
Can I get my kp500 done
What year is that stereo unit.
Early 70's
Late 70s early 80s
god pm po ser gumagawa po ba kayo nang kp car stereo
When you said you were going to play some 70's stuff, I was kind of looking forward to hearing the Sex Pistols.
I'd rather forget them.
I like to had
magkano po yan
H much
So that’s why car stereos are all 3.8 wats 12 V 4 ohms an ahh haa moment
