  • A nice Pioneer TX-7500 tuner to go with the SA-7500 that was restored in a previous video. We go through the testing and alignment process after restoring the power supply. We have to get a little creative with the Stereo alignment because my test equipment is different than the equipment used in the service manual. This one was a lot of fun to do!

Good video but somewhat hard to watch with the camera waving about all the time.

I just purchased an HP 8656B for attempting tuner alignments.. I can't afford a Sencore SG-165 for the MPX signal generator. What's a cheaper alternative that will work?

I have have both the TX-9500 and the TX-7500. The 7500 is my favorite sounding. It is more light and airy with great fidelity. The tuning wheel is a bit sloppier though. I have compared it to two TX-9500s and it beats them both IMO.

I'm going to be brutally honest... I can't understand the whole "upgrade to LED". Many of these lamps have been working since 1975/6 when they were originally installed in Japan. That's over 45/7 years many have been service, the same exact bulb. Many people say, "...well, they run cooler". OK, so what? They've been working as intended all of these years. Most people who complain that the heat ruined the socket(s) probably don't understand someone else probably installed an incorrect lamp at one time or another, and it produced too much heat. But hacking up a circuit card just to install "better" LED's is not something I'm ever going to do.

If it were not for the 20k plus views I would delete this video. It’s jumping so much I could not finish it.

This video gives an insight into what doing an alignment of an old tuner might be like and what kind of equipment might be necessary for those of us who have never done so. Kudos for that. I certainly learned something from it. Thank you for producing the video.
    However...
According to the condition assessment at the beginning of the video, "out of the box", the FM tuner worked but the AM tuner didn't (as we find out starting at 2:45). The fine tuning/alignment of the FM tuner was interesting to be sure, but the FM functionality worked before the case came off. Again, the AM functionality did not work, and yet the AM alignment (which begins at 34:26) seemed an afterthought. So much so that there wasn't even a demonstration at the end that the AM tuning problem was resolved! The function knob at the very brief final condition assessment doesn't leave the FM setting!
The first part of the AM procedure at 600 kHz showed no problem with the unit (we see adjustment of T2 but not the >external< bar antenna); the remaining AM procedure at 1400 kHz also showed no problem with the unit (37:59 "so far nothing has been out at all). So I am a little perplexed, and a bit disappointed to be frank. 38:50 minutes of watching without apparent resolution of the root problem. Does the AM section work or not? What was done to rectify the problem? Was some faulty component replaced that we don't see? Strange and a bit anticlimactic.
Loads of potential here but the conclusion is missing.

Have a commercial Free Jazz station in my area so FM is my thing + have 20 FM Tuners. Have both TX 7500 and TX 9500 MKII and both perform pretty damn equal except 9500 has better range, on a good day can pick-up 91X which is about 200 miles away with signal strength of 4. This is the best sound, to my ears, even better than most of my 400 CD's and not a LP Fan too much distortion.

Before I even saw this video,I made the mistake of spraying my Onkyo TX-4500 tuner condenser with contact cleaner and my stereo went wacky, no reception. Then made another mistake by fiddling with those little dials you did, Oh boy. Stereo worked great before but was real dirty inside being 30 years old. I don't want to toss this but I have no Idea how much something like this would cost to repair. I do Have a shop close by and fretting this will cost me more than receiver is worth. I did inherit a Pioneer SX-1800 tho that needs bulbs.

I was SO enjoying this video until you came to the frozen tuning slug and antenna slug. You cut away from both of them and you didn't tell us how you got them "unstuck". I've broken a few ferrite slugs and I was SO anxious to see how you do this....but....

Hi. I'm owner of a Pioneer SX636 that isn´t tunning anything on FM section. Changed the two old fet's 3sk45, two transistors 2sc717 and 2sc461, ic's ha1137, ha1156 and ha1201 all brand new old stock, a few eletrolytic caps , the ceramic ones only in the tunning and mixer stage. Measured the voltages on the decoder and multiplexer ic's, they aren't quite correct, there's one voltage missing on pin 8 from ha1156, change the 2sc945 that is connected in that pin, but nothing. I almost without option now. Would suggest me what could do, what I'm missing.

My jaw drops at your equipment. That Tektronix 2465BDM alone is a beast. I used to use it daily in my job. It has a lot of features that I'm not sure I could do without after using one for so long. Just the Delta T and Delta V features make it worth it. I would often set those at the required cal setting and adjust the pots until the levels matched the dotted lines. Easy-peasy.

Hi, picked up a Tx 7800. Worked well for a while and now the stations aren't locking any longer, lights are all burnt out now. What's the proper way to connect an FM antenna properly? Would appreciate.
    - I picked up some Deoxit and vast improvement on both, but still some stations around the middle not coming locking. If I flip FM 'Muting Mode' toggle to mono on the tuner, the station (99.5) comes in. Flip it back and the channel is noisy again.

xraytonyb; needless to assume the criticism you must have endured with respect to your videography style after you finished this video. you may consider bringing in someone to stabilize the camera, rather than you wearing 2 different hats at the same time. I had to rest my eyes for an hour after just washing your video for 10 minutes, its a shame because you display some useful knowledge about this subject.

I wish I can contact "xraytonyb " to restore my pioneer TX9100 and SA91000. I was fortunate enough to grow up enjoying both these units along with KLH 5's. Though my present units are not my original units, these present units does need restoring.

The framerate got messed up on this video when I produced it. Just got the new software and I'm still learning it. A couple of the videos turned out like this. I looked it up and I guess this is a known problem with youtube. I got it straightened out now. Sorry, it made me dizzy watching it also!

Very helpful video. Thanks for this man, looks much easier than I was thinking this would be. Would a digital fm stereo transmitter/modular with an MP3 connected playing a 1Khz test tone, who's antenna is wired directly into the 300ohm transformer be sufficient to use as a signal generator? And the last question is, will a 25Mhz oscilloscope be enough for this alignment, since you are looking at the output of the tuner in Khz?

    • @xraytonyb
      @xraytonyb  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well, that's kind of a complicated question! In order to properly test and align a tuner like this, you will need an RF signal generator that is capable of both AM and FM modulation. To align the MPX circuit for stereo, you will also need a multiplex generator. As for the scope, the 25MHz will work for the IF and MPX alignments. If you want to look at the actual carrier frequencies, FM goes up to 108MHz and your scope won't be able to properly display that. The 1KHz tone is actually a modulated signal that is riding on the IF frequency of 455KHz for AM and 10.7 MHz for FM. I show this on some of my other videos, like the SX-1050, SX-450 and Kenwood KR7400. Again, you will need an RF signal generator. An MP3 player and RF modulator won't work, as it can't generate the IF/RF/MPX carrier frequencies. Hope this helps.

Tony, maybe he is talking about one of these: www.amazon.com/Doosl-Universal-Wireless-Transmitter-Adapter/dp/B018QN4INM/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1512506875&sr=8-8&keywords=fm+transmitter+for+carI used one to sorta-align a Toshiba 735 and it worked pretty well. I could plug it into my laptop and pump different signals out each channel. It doesn't broadcast very far so moving closer or further away worked to change the signal strength. I could also set it to broadcast anywhere on the band. I am curious on your thoughts. I really enjoy your videos!
