- John of Gaunt was the richest man in England after his nephew, King Richard II. He had led a fascinating life, full of adventure, but on this day in 1399, he died at the age of 58. His passing would spark a chain of events that led to his son deposing his nephew, founding the Lancastrian dynasty of kings.
