    Ah, the infamous FFXII...

During probably the lowest points of my life to date, at a time when I ended up living completely alone with a shitty low pay job, an empty fridge and nothing but a dusty PS2 to keep me company.. I unearthed my old copy of FFXII that I hadn't given much time up til then. With depression at an all time high and expectations at an all time low, I slipped that DVD into the console left this pains of this world and returned to magical realm of Evalice. Little did I know how amazing the adventure ahead of me would be, and how much they would change me. I sunk hundreds of hours into this game. It was my comfort, my escape, my friend, while I got back on my feet. I know that sounds pathetic and retarded, but this game really did help me through a hard time and for that reason it will always be amazing to me. It is a shame it doesn't get the credit it deserves!

Joe Bailey dude. i graduated as a nurse. i passed the licensure exams but i couldn't land a job because there so many nurses in my country. i decided to take some time off, like a year or so.. hahaha played the ton of this game. the very first game i 100% completed. in a way, just like you it this help me cope up through depression, disappointment and stresses. that was 8 years ago. FFXII is number 1 in my heart.

nah man that doesn't sound pathetic or retarded at all. Games are just like the movies, books, music and shows we watch. Except with games you take control and get really immersed. I'm glad games can have such a positive effect with people like yourself and so many others. Hope you're doing better these days man!

Troy Mayer Depends on the game. This one yes. I'm well aware of Square Enix's (well deserved) shaky reputation on porting games, but generally their Remasters have been solid as far as Playstation goes. Add to that this is an improved version of the much beloved International release that never made it to US shores and this was a preorder I felt was worth to $50 risk.

Played it when it originally came out, but I was a different gamer then and couldn't really get into the mechanics. Since then I've become addicted to character building in RPG's and creating optimal builds and "perfect" characters and holy shit this game is a dream for that kind of thing. If you're into character building and like getting your grind on every so often this game is for you.

Now I'm replaying and fully using the gambit system and am hooked!! Such an incredible game... made me crack open all of my Ivalice games all over again lol.

This was one of the best Final Fantasy games ever made - great story, amazing 'game' system. The dumbing down of the games by removing items, armor .. heck, even the need to heal your team .. is a terrible trend for the casual gamer market so people can mash buttons for a while then watch mini-movies.

Thats what people get wrong about FFXII , its not a story about vaan being a brat , its a story about war and political issues and the part that the main characters have in these events . It was even more super awesome because after I had my daughter I was able to play this one handed while I was breastfeeding; helping to keep me awake in those wee hours of the morning. After I have the gambits set up in those sweet spots all I had to do is just walk around with minor tweaks here and there.

All these remasters always seem like they are at the level of graphics "I remember" from playing the game. Will get the game and play it and think this game doesn't look any different. Then, for the games and systems I still have, I boot up the original game and realize the original games graphics were so much worse than my memory of them.

FFXII is fucking amazing, I enjoyed every moment of it and spent almost as much time with it as I did FF10. (In fact, probably the only reason I spent more time on FF10 is because of stuff like Catcher Chocobo and monster hunting.) the speed up feature is a godsend. feel like it should be an option in many JRPG's. the game, I believe, is a bit of an acquired taste at first - mostly because of the gambit and combat system - but if you can find yourself patient enough to experiment and learn, it definitely can become pretty damn fun. honorable mentions to the Job tree to choose your characters' class combinations and skills/abilities as you progress.

    • @Goremize
      @Goremize 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

No - People hated it for good reasons (I'm someone who loved it and have finished the game multiple times myself) But there were many reasons that turned people off the game, the main guy, Vaan, being boring and bland, the Gambit system existence, the general ease of the game (only made worse by the remastered version, the remastered version has made the game... so easy.. its like... so easy, there is not word for it but.. so stupidly easy now) I myself will probably only play the game at its hardest - the original version, because the job system just made the game too easy. However, for FF13 and up, this will not happen. People LOVED FFX and such, and below, and were vocal about it before remastered, very, FFXII has gotten the same people who loved the original out of the woodwork, but still has the same amount of hate as before - FFXIII doesn't have the fanbase as any game before, and FFXV even less

  • @markassassin91
    @markassassin91 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I actually liked the old skill tree they had in the 2006 version, mainly because I could activate whatever skills I wanted without class restrictions. Which to me was a way to give each character an ability I wanted to give them which made every character unique to the play style I gave them. I am willing to try this updated version out, but to me that's why I enjoyed this ff more than the rest.

Limited data plan. Can't download 50 GB for this title, or 100 GB for FFXV. People always complain how a developer is "losing money" because they don't make their game multi-platform. I think they are losing a LOT more sales with digital only games this size and all the people that cannot download file sizes like this due to slow and/or limited data internet connections. I work for a company that has 60 locations across 3 states. There are about 20 of those locations that no internet is available in those areas that would allow for this kind of gaming, and thus, all the people in those areas also would not be able to. Poor high speed internet availability is way more prevalent than most of you realize, in the U.S. of all places anyways.

I'm here for the pc version too, never played it. And no it isn't always the users fault ariel mansur... some places like rural areas have bad internet because they don't have the setups more built up areas have, that isn't any fault of the people living there. These downloads for me are a real pain, if I do buy this game I'll have to download it overnight which isn't that big a deal but I've had some that last near a day because of the size.
Btw pretty sure I've seen people say on steam the actual download is about 25gb.

8 and 12 are my favorites in the series. I like underdogs I guess. They are the standout entries mechanically - and in 8's case thematically as well. 9 is probably my favorite "standard" entry, followed very closely by 10 whose story is phenomenal.
For real, if you guys have been sleeping on those two darkhorses of the mainline series - they are absolute must plays all the way through. 8's story does some crazy things in the final acts especially - so play it even if the junction system is odd and easily gimmicked.

Definitely one of my favorites in the series, and arguably my favorite, although 9 and 10 will always hold special places in my heart. I believe of all the Final Fantasies this one has the most Marketable story next to 7 and 9. I would love to write and direct a Trilogy of films based on this story. And yes I found Vaan to be a good character because he was so normal. I mean other than his fashion sense, he was just a dreamer who got caught up in larger world politics and I liked the perspective of seeing the story through his eyes as a viewer would if they had been transported into the story. This allowed for every other character in the party to have worth and each of them have value in their own way simply because Vaan is the POV character and the story is not being driven by him. Each character around Vaan is special. Basch the broken knight seeking to redeem himself, Fran the exile, Balthier the pirate captain and rogue, Penelo is his orphan best friend and love interest, and Ashe the Princess in exile that drives the plot. It all works so well because Vaan is the POV who happens to stumble into the conflict.

FFXII was my first FF game that I played as a conscious individual (ie not a vague memory of someone's brother playing). I loved the characters and understood their motives. What really give me that spark of wonder were how fleshed out the world seemed. I always sat back in awe when the game threw in the "welcome mat" cinematic of a new area/region. I was always more into world building so this game was a special treat. Overall I was over the moon when they announced the remastered version, and im not one bit disappointed 👌👌👌

FFXII is a worthy experience just for the grinding alone. Best gameplay and side-quests in the series, it's super enjoyable to just hunt high prized monsters and loot. The story kinda sucks, the characters are boring, the music is not memorable.. But the gameplay is so fucking good. This game is like the recent Metal Gear Solid V, the story sucks, but the gameplay saves the final product in a glorious way.

Final Fantasy 12 is in my opinion the last true FF game. The MMOs were great but 13, the sequels and 15 were all, CLEARLY incomplete projects which focused to much on 1 aspect while ignoring another. You never got everything you expected from an FF game. 12 had the visuals, the cutscenes, the story, a TON of optional exploration, and an open endgame. every game since has sacrificed one of these foundation aspects due to over-budgeting and poor time management. The discovered an entire section of game missing when they explored 15's code. Left out because of poor planning. I think 12 will do well for rerelease but also invite stronger harsher critisism to Square's current works. Square, the company that said on record it would not want to remake 7 because that act would be an admission that the company was out of fresh ideas and desperate. Their words

Tidus was actually a great character for X. He was our point of contact for the world of Spira, as he was as clueless as we are in our first playthrough. We experience Spira for the first time with him. Story wise too: not only is he trying to cope with the fact that his world is gone, the fact that he's doing his own pilgrimage to meet his father and get some answers while tagging along with Yuna's pilgrimage to kill herself and save the world is fucking nuts. I love X.

Final Fantasy 12 was my first FF game I played. I actually enjoyed the story and everything about it except for the grinding. I thought the grinding in particular was a bit too much. I'd see myself having to level up almost 10 levels or more just so I could get past one boss and find myself having to grind again just to be able to kill enemies in a certain area. I very much liked being able to customize the characters "finishing moves" I guess you could call it and chaining them together was awesome. Other than that I really enjoyed it and I'll be picking up this copy for some nostalgia. I also never finished the game so it's another reason why I'll be picking it up.

I enjoyed FF12 in 2006 but struggled by the midway point (Silakwood) With the Zodiac Age though, ive put 60hours into it and am now at the final act hunting the hidden espers and finishing the elite marks off before i complete the final mission. I feel like they made it easier in the remastered by giving us access to ALL the gambits in the shop straight away, instead of unlocking as the game goes on. I was able to set up Penelo as a white mage healer, with Basch as my tank, Vaan as a mace user, Fran as a archer, ashe as a second healer and Baltheir as a spear user. With gambits set , the game really played itself. I grinded on in Lhusu Mines for ages on the bridge against skeletons and unlocked their boards with ease. Then just stayed on top of items and rarely died. Where as the original, i was dying all the damn time. Maybe because im older and wiser to Gambits, or maybe they made it easier.

FF7, 8, and 9 didnt have as much to know about the world but was really great when it came to exploration. FF12 probably is best at doing both although the license board system was complex. FF7 will be my all time favorite when it comes to the unique world setting though.

For over a year tis game stood there on my wish list and I was reluctant to buy it. With a good discount, I finally got it for PC a few weeks ago and I was really amazed. I love the "star-wars" feel of the game, with different civilizations, advanced technologies set in a way older looking scenario and the desert/tropical landscapes. The cities and dungeons are pretty unique and very detailed (I guess it had a lot of influence on FF XIII?) and I think the graphics aged really well. It has a more realistic plot that somehow makes it unique in the series. It may become my favorite Final Fantasy game.

I'm playing this through for the first time right now on Switch, and I can understand why some people really do not like this one. This video critique is very fair I'd say. I'm enjoying it a great deal myself, and the story and characters are fantastic (Fran in particular) and it's well worth it despite the flaws. I do, however, think that the two biggest issues with the game are pretty valid:
    1) It does sort of feel like the lead up to FF 13's hallway simulator design. There is an insane amount of running down endless hallways and open spaces. There's just far too much of it. The Switch version at least allows you to toggle on 2x or 4x speed, which makes traversing these wide open, empty spaces much less tedious.
    2) The combat system is designed around programming your party members to automatically activate certain abilities at various thresholds. On paper this is nice, but in practice it sort of ends up with you setting up your perfect gambits to make your party members do exactly what you need, and then the combat can almost be put on auto pilot, taking a lot of the strategy out of it.
Granted, the 2x and 4x speed boost can make the auto pilot combat much faster, but the issue is that then the whole game can essentially be played on super speed with your AI largely doing everything they need to do at just the right moments with very little input for you. This all makes for a game that feels like it largely doesn't need you to even be there. To some this might be fine, it gives it more of an RTS feel perhaps, designing your team perfectly so that it synergizes well and can mostly control itself. If that sounds good to you then you may take no issue with it.
TLDR: I am greatly enjoying the game. The story and characters are fantastic. It does have a few very glaring flaws that hold it back from being truly perfect.

Well yeah, it would be kinda hard to control 3 party members everytime you run into a monster with this system..
And the gambits will not be prepared for anything, as you only have 10 commands available, and some bosses throw all sort of shit and desease on your way, so unless you have all remedy upgrades, you will need to put some input there or you'll die.
This game only removes that need to repeat itself like previous rpgs, instead of asking you to put commands every single fight, you'll just have to tell them what to do before the fight even begin. But you can always disable gambit and play the game without it just fine, at least with the character you're controlling.

I didnt play the original game but got it on switch and ive played through it 4x already. I dont find the story or characters particularly interesting, but they are good enough. Its the gameplay that is so good. It reminds me of the best parts of mmo’s, minus dealing with annoying people online. They clearly were inspired by the early mmo’s with the exploration of large areas and fun, quick combat with a bunch of different systems that all work great together. Totally different than the painfully slow battles of previous ff games. I could just keep playing through this damn game over and over.

XII was my first FF game and I loved it when I tried the demo. I was hesitant to buy the remaster when I learned about the job system but I fell in love with its combination. XV was wonderful however, XII is dear to my heart. I love it more now then I did in '06 and surprising to say that I still remember most of it while learning something new each time I play.

I remember that FFXII was the first game I bought near the time of release. My mom had given me $60 that year, and I rushed out and picked it up. It took a while to get used to the battle system, but once I did, I had a lot of fun with it.

This game, when I first played it on the PS2, was quickly elevated to one of my top five favourite games of all time. Been playing FF since the Nintendo Entertainment System and the enjoyment I received from just roaming with my party and never really having to do much besides watch is unparalleled in my gaming experiences. This game really proved that Final Fantasy can be about macro-decision making rather than micro-decision making. You configure the party as a whole for all aspects of combat: ability to survive, ability to quick dispatch foes and supporting abilities to heal and protect the party and where each of those gambits is kind of micro-management, they would reflect your decision making processes as a whole in any other Final Fantasy game. You spend less time inputting commands and waiting and more time letting the characters follow a combat doctrine.
No game before or since has left me as satisfied as this game when it comes to watching a great plan work out exactly as you expected it to. Beautiful graphics, gorgeous sound and watching the combat play out is always interesting. I purchased Zodiac Age for the PC (installing it now) and I know I'm about to lose 6 months of my life playing the hell out of it. If the systems in this game same weird to anyone, or it doesn't "sound like Final Fantasy" to you, play it and finish it. You'll thank me later. :D

It's important to note that the fastforward feature is something that's standard across a lot of re-released FF games. The more recent ports of 7 and 9 (and I assume 8 and 10, though I haven't played the ports) also have this.

The best Final Fantasy in the series, to me! I respect that others have differing opinions, but, this is my opinion. I’m playing through it right now for the first time on the PS4 & I love it, so much! Plus, the implemented 2x or 4x speed hack makes grinding a breeze. I hope that FF 16 will be set in Ivalice.
