Its over transphobes, I'v already depicted you as a dummy thicc cartoon lady played by Amy Sedaris, and myself as a suspciiously strong teenage girl with a short temper.
While I understand that having a cartoonishly evil transphobe can come off as silly, but honestly, I think it’s a hyperbolic depiction of real world transphobic actions that we see online and offline. They can get to the point of being cartoonishly deranged, though I don’t get why they gave her a dump truck, I’m stumped there lol.
Absolutely! Love that show Any episodes come to mind as a favourite? I remember that ep dealing with racebaiting (that visiting 'sensitivity officer' type who just caused conflicts where there weren't any before) being good at the topic, but not the best episode particularly
@@Truffs_Stuff Not related to that but this video is attracting a certain kind of clientele. One promoted also by you hearting the comments of some of that clientele. That could be a bit dangerous to the channel given modern TH-cam.
I am scratching my head at this shows implementation of Brooklyn. The idea that trans atheletes outclass cis women is obviously a huge point of debate, one they kind of shoot themselves in the foot over by showing Brooklyn outclassing all the girl characters and collecting the keys solo. They want to portray the trans rep positively, which is fine, but by putting them on such a pedastal they legitimised one of the villians biggest causes of concern.
That's a good point - I think it's a hangover from the frequent writing trope at the moment of 'the protagonist is perfect and has nothing to learn', particularly if they're of certain groups. You see it a lot with women in film/TV too. They want to have Brooklyn be perfect and amazing, but in this particular context that also backfires. Maybe going the route of having her be more a part of the team than the only one doing any work would have made the message that she's 'no different' to her teammates make a bit more sense.
I think that was more so to show how she was trying to take on everything alone. You can see that in the clip where they get the first key where Lunella open the lock with the key inside but Brooklyn grabs it. Or even earlier in the episode where Lunella offered to be the coach, but Brooklyn decided to do it herself. throughout the episode her friends are constantly trying to support there and be there for her but she won’t let them because she feels like this is something that she needs to do by herself. And even at the end of the episode, we don’t see the outcome of the volleyball game because it doesn’t matter what the outcome of the game is what matters is that Brooklyn will keep fighting and her friends will be there to support her and she can do what she loves.
That's the thing Male athletes at their peak always outclass female athletes at their peak The only cases of female athletes dominating male opponents are when the male was an elderly veteran with their best years behind them, or a beginner
@@Carlos-bz5oo No they haven't. In fact, there are plenty of cases where low ranking male athletes end-up rising to the very peak after transitioning and going against female athletes.
Again, Hollywood fails to understand that leading with "You're completely wrong and also a horrible person. Let me explain..." is no way to have these conversations.
For sure! I think it stems from a black-and-white mindset about right and wrong. It's like a small child's thinking: there are baddies and then there are goodies. Baddies just exist to cause evil, but you, the goodie in the story, are the only person with agency or complex thought. Any attempt to rationalise other opinions is shouted down as almost heretical. It's very hard to even chat casually with people like that.
it kinda feels like the coach was one of those characters an artist would use to make their point more clearer by making them all angry and crazy while their character is the more rational reasonable one.
I think that's exactly what Coach Greer was. It's a bit of a cowardly way out of engaging with a topic imo - if they were too afraid to do it honestly, they shouldn't have done it at all. I mean... I guess they kind of didn't, the MGADD team made the episode but Disney put it on hold 😅
@Truffs_Stuff it feels amateur for them to do that I get what your saying, it's an immature way of doing things instead of making both points clearer like in an essay you'd have a counterclaim, like yes, that opinion exists but here's my opinion on it.
literally "i drew myself as the chad and you as the soyjack" but because the people that made coach greer are woke they unintentionally make her look better than the protagonist.
There are many people defending this episode's heavy handedness with "It's a kid's show, kids don't get subtlety." Kids are smarter than they think, and the episode of The Proud Family you showed proves that there are show writers who agree. It's almost like some people care more about pushing an agenda over provoking meaningful discussion.
Being subtle sometimes works against your message. Real life transphobes like JK Rowling and Trump really are mentally stunted sociopaths, so why give them unnecessary depth?
Maybe they were just showing how ridiculous and awful transphobes are? Maybe they wanted people to see how fcking frustrating it is for us to spend every minute of every day justifying our existence to a shrieking pack of obtuse, hopelessly bigoted shtbags who was to erase us from existence? Oh but do forgive us for not "being subtle" as we scream for help that you centrists will never provide. So sorry 🙄
I think there were a lot of good points made, but the framing of Brookyln breaking the key as a "biological male" almost booting a "biological female" is strange. Brookyln is a child and Coach Greer is an adult. The sex of either party isn't relevant when its a grown adult vs a twelve year old, especially since the adult was the aggressor. Plus it was clear Brookyln had no intention of hitting her, only breaking the key in her hand. Again, good points were made, but I feel this was not one of them.
I was okay with most points but the whole "biological male" and "biological female" thing felt needlessly backwards, like we're going back to "your sex defines you" and really bioessentialist when the character is trans, feeling like "male socialization" talking points or "men are more violent and dangerous to women and this "biological" man exerting violence over "real" women" Honestly reads as a bit of a dog whistle, unintentional or not, which sucks cuz there are a lot of good points in the vid.
@lvvylwy961 I mean... trans women are biologically different from cis women, in sports thats a problem - you cant just wish that away, it has to be addressed As for the vid - Truffs is pointing out the valid issue of depicting Brooklyn as so violent when the stereotype that Trans Women are violent exists. Like she said, making ammo.
@@KotoCrash would you say that michael phelps should not have been allowed to compete as an olympic swimmer, because he has a higher lung capacity than the average man, which gave him an advantage? he got 28 medals, 23 of them gold. nobody thought it was unfair there.
I'm going to be clear. I don't really have an opinion over the "Trans people in sports" debate For starters I stopped identifying as a trans woman recently for personal manners and I have no interest in biology of sport or how adding a trans woman among cis women in sports would play out With all due respects I'm here to simply try to say that I have not really payer attention to the episode being about Trans people in sports and I thought it was more about how "Trans people have it way worse because people veiw us not as people but as statments" It could be a way into the episode. The episode could be that unsubtle and just plainly about trans people in sports But honestly as someone who identified as a trans woman I honestly felt personally touched way more then in any other kind of queer repersention before. It felt like my struggles of just not being able to live normally without being misrable on the inside were seen But I understand the criticism livid against the episode for the portrayal of the other side of the debate If the episode was rewritten more about how trans kids are treated in schools I think it could have continued with the overly cartoonish villain But what do you expect from Disney? Ain't no way their brave enough for this episode let alone one like my idea Nice video btw
"If the episode was rewritten more about how trans kids are treated in schools I think it could have continued with the overly cartoonish villain" That's the same thing I was thinking. It should have been an episode generically about transphobia, and it would have been fine. The problem is that the episode, due to the sport theme and also some of the things said in it, seems to actually be talking about the "trans people in sports" statement, and that's what really causing the issue.
I really wish we got to see more into Greer's perspective on why she's upset over Brooklyn being on the team, so the viewers can see the issue and how it affects Brooklyn. Like, how many people see trans people as dangerous, they could've shown Greer referring to Brooklyn as that, and Brooklyn being upset over it. It could've shown how when transphobes make accusations against trans people for things they don't do, it also affects trans children. And again, with Brooklyn's friends not doing much for the escape room, and Brooklyn slamming her hands on the floor, it doesn't help with the real life stereotypes trans women go through. It should've been ALL of them helping, but the door still not opening because Brooklyn also helped. And maybe one of Brooklyn's friends gets upset with how Greer hurt Brooklyn, and maybe they could slam their fists against the floor. And like you said, I think it's good to see both sides of the argument instead of being spoon fed an opinion. Many things about this episode should be "show don't tell." SHOW how Greer's arguments are hurtful instead of helpful, SHOW why she thinks that way, SHOW how Brooklyn's point of view affects the argument Greer has. Like maybe they could show Brooklyn being a good teammate and letting her friends score the shot in the hoop, instead of the stereotype of trans women being more capable than cis women that Greer has in her head. They could tackle the internalized misogyny Greer has with that argument too!
Nah. Transphobes are morons, and they don't care about the well-being of trans people beyond their ability to CONTROL said trans people. There is no "both sides"ing when they want us not to fcking exist.
To answer your question as to why Coach Greer didn't seem to take any issue with the nonbinary Tai being on the girls' team, it's very likely that Greer just didn't *register* Tai as anything but a cis girl since femme-presenting AFAB nonbinary people-such as myself-very often DO just get assumed to be cis women/girls. Like, it's still the *norm* for me to be misgendered by most of the people I've met in person even AFTER correcting them on my pronouns (I use they/them pronouns), etc. MULTIPLE times, both in verbal and written communication. That being said, I have no idea why Greer didn't automatically clock Tai as not being a cis girl unless she just never (over)heard them speak at all like she did Brooklyn because I *immediately* clocked Tai as having a not-cis-female VA from their *first syllable*-like, do you HEAR that kid and how deep and masculine their voice is compared to Brooklyn's?
Tai is more like a Tomboy than non-binary, and let's be real, the concept of non-binary is an Oxymoron because you can't be something else than male or female. if you want to be non-binary, you better wish for your next life to be jellyfish or something
@@samdawson-n1zAFAB just means Assigned Female At Birth. Being nonbinary has nothing to do with what you were born with, I think you're thinking of "intersex"
I was a little afraid to even look at what the drama about this show was about, but I love everything you've said. Actually balanced discussion that doesn't villainize one side or the other. Plus the editing style and humour was a lovely cherry on top :)
Aww thank you, I really appreciate it, and thanks for watching! There can be so much vitriol on this topic, and it's sometimes easier to viciously take one side or another as an absolute enemy (not to say I'm above politico tripe ofc) but nah
@Truffs_Stuff heck yeah man. I absolutely get caught up in it myself, but you balanced it well and reasonably! Watching some of your other stuff while I work now :)
The thing is though, one side are actively bigots? This isn't a both sides argument when one side is clearly wrong. Like people are only using "women's safety" as a facade to their bigotry. The minute we start drawing lines on who can and who can't compete in single sex games, we're inevitably going to discriminate people, drawing the guidelines closer and closer until cis women are affected too. And they ARE. Multiple times cis women have been targeted with this same invasive strategies, banned from playing, and put in danger from transphobes because we're all so worried about women getting "beat up by men in skirts". That's not what trans women are, and it acts like cis women, "real women", are inherently less capable and strong unless they have the male hormone. Which they do have, by the way, again this is coming down to "how much testosterone do you have in your body" before you can compete, regardless of your birth sex.
@@misfits9294 The fact that bad faith actors exist doesn't mean the genuine arguments they hide behind go away. Sex is much more than a ratio of nmol/litre.
@@NewSonyWonderHappyMadisonFan Ahhh I dunno, Im honestly surprised they let it get made. I cant be upset they pulled something this poorly written, let alone one that makes such blunt argument on an ongoing debate
"Trans women are the same just like normal women, it's not taking advantage" > the whole episode have the said trans character doing everything, which pointing out that it is an advantage
Did you actually watch the episode? She only accomplishes her goal with the help and support of her fans, and it's ambiguous who won the game at the end
This is incorrect assumption of the episode. A lot of trans people feel like they have to do everything on their own as a result and Brooklyn feels like she needs to but that part causes it’s own damages and alone she would have failed It only with friends she succeeded
Tell us you're media illiterate WITHOUT telling us you're media illiterate. Brooklyn TOOK THE TASKS UPON HERSELF because she was being made to feel like she was a burden on her team. Oh but do go on about how being trans was an "advantage" in the rigged game created by a disgusting transphobe. I'm sure Map Walsh will he happy to see someone spreading his lies.
That's a very incorrect interpretation In the episode she literally states that she feels like a burden to the team. When someone feels like a burden they'll typically do more than they have to and overcorrect in order to get rid of that feeling You can see when they start breaking the system to escape that they start to work more as a team because the team assured her she's not a burden
"Incorrect Interpretation" Brooklyn literally collect ALL THE KEYS in the episode and none of the girls gets the key, That's what i'm talking about ADVANTAGE, Brooklyn DID EVERYTHING ALONE in the episode shut up, this is why people doesn't accept trans people
Disagreeing with this episode doesn't make you a misandrist terf who's afraid of men or a misogynist who thinks women are too weak to do anything. You can have a nuanced opinion; don't worry.
I'm glad to see a more critical take on the episode that isn't just people using it as an excuse to be transphobic. I'm also a big fan of the show and think they could've done this way better. Greer being a strawman is my biggest issue with the episode, although even if they wanted to go that route they could've made a point of saying Brooklyn is on HRT (she's physically not bigger than her teammates and has a small waist/breasts, so a claim like that wouldn't be unbelievable) and thus isn't physically much different from a cis girl. It's not a perfect solution, and teenagers on HRT is its own debate, but it would've given Greer less of a leg to stand on. Otherwise, if they wanted an episode highlighting a trans issue, they could've avoided the sports thing entirely and picked something else. This same season had a school dance episode where we learn Brooklyn is interested in finding a boyfriend, maybe the guy she liked puts her down because he didn't want to be seen with a trans girl. Or it could be about her being prevented from using a girl's bathroom/changing room because it gets out that she's AMAB, but using boys' facilities triggers her dysphoria and feels humiliating. Honestly the ideas are endless, but spotlighting her being a trans athlete was probably the worst option they could've went with. Like you said, it's only gonna give bigots more ammunition because there are real arguments to be made against her being in the volleyball team, and the episode addresses none of it. It's especially jarring because I'd at least expect Lunella the know-it-all to understand where Greer is coming from. (Honestly even that could've made for an interesting episode idea, Lunella being torn between her friendship with Brooklyn and the knowledge that Greer isn't exactly wrong either) In any case, it sucks that MGADD has so much incredible writing and animation to offer, but this episode is the one to get all the attention. Hair Today Gone Tomorrow worked a lot better because the only person Lunella was fighting was herself, and the episode never tried to claim it was wrong to like straight hair (it even made a point of showing how beautiful Casey's hair was!), only that it was wrong to hate your hair for its natural texture. I guess if I had to give Gatekeeper credit, I really liked the mixtape scene of them breaking out. The colors and animation were beautiful, once again Flying Bark graces us with some of the best visuals you'll ever see on a TV budget. I don't care for the episode as a whole, but I've rewatched the mixtape scene more times than I care to count. The worst thing about this episode being banned is that all the hard work that went into the animation is just sealed off in the vault to rot, so props to whoever leaked it. Hopefully it never becomes lost media.
I like your ideas. Having an episode tackling the topic of trans people and transphobia isnt bad. I think the cartoon could have done a good job, but they picked the wrong setting and now it seems like the villain actually wasnt wrong which would clearly not be very good from a superhero show in which the bad guys are supposed to be bad.
Message aside, there is a very noticeable plot hole that ruins the episode for me. The straw man coach already has the escape room key and knows how to use it, suggesting that she was going to sabotage the Squirrels all along. But why would she if she seemed to have no problem with them prior to learning that Brooklyn was trans? They spent so much time trying to beat us over the head with the message that they didn't think through a key plot point in the story!
I don’t really consider that a plot hole. The episode said she had found the key a while ago. It be nice if she revealed what her original plans for the key was but I wouldn’t consider it not telling us a plot hole. The key had multiple uses
I feel like some of your arguments definitely make sense, but it seems to me that you are only criticizing the way the show portrayed this issue because you don't agree with it. If you believed Brooklyn should be allowed to play, would you still be criticizing the villainizing of the coach with the fat ass? Also to me this seems barely exaggerated. Obviously real life transphobes aren't going to be supervillains but this is a superhero show after all. However, the coach's dialogue seems very similar to some things i have heard in real life from people. Some people really do just start freaking out it seems.
Yeah, its very clear she is biased and honestly its kinda gross of the OP. The fact that there are some actually heinous comments she is aware of and even had the gall to heart shows she cares more about views and clout than anything else. But yes its a show made by and for people who are minority (black American) and coincidentally those types also tend to support other marginalized groups for the obvious reason of solidarity. I think OP doth protest too much and she sees herself a bit in the coach.
People keep forgetting that people just like her exist irl especially people in power such as a teacher, police officer ect ect. Because it’s easier for them to get away with being blatantly transphobic. Same thing with the internet it’s harder for you to do something about it so they feel more confident to be more extreme. I can very much say this as a trans man myself lol. Edit remembered something that actually kinda does help my case here. So there was an lgbtq club at my school so my school wasn’t as blatant as this coach but they did lock the gender neutral bathrooms for months. Said it was because they were under repairs but again legit months and they fixed the other bathrooms within a week. Plus they didn’t unlock it until act went up and asked to which they gave us the key for it. Also a different gn bathroom had it’s lock broken for over 4 years cause it was broken when I first got into Highschool and it was still broken when I graduated.
There was this perspective, but also there was the fact that trans women do compete in women’s sport sometimes And statistically, they are not dominating the sport.
Trans women's involvement in women's sports is arguably the most polarizing/heated topic on anything LGBT, and from what I saw of the episode, it went in the most extremely caricaturized example possible. South Park did an episode featuring the same topic called "Board Girls." It's an episode that primarily focuses on calling out bad actors who rob both sides of a fair discussion in the matter. I think it handles the topic in more realistic and enlightening way.
That's just how they act like in general and that episode you mentioned is more of a commentary of toxic masculinity than anything the part of him paying sports has very little to do with the actual plot.
@@DanielJacobs-rz1zl It does make a legitimate point though. There are some trans athletes who only switched genders as a means to win in sports. Winning grants you prestige and money so if all a man had to do was say he's a woman and grow his hair out, then it's not much of a sacrifice. Even if the athlete was legitimately trans, they would still have a massive advantage if they trained all their lives and went through puberty properly.
Realistic? It uses a caricature of a trans person and implies that trans people are never actually the gender they identify as, they’re just using it as a way to have an advantage over women. Sometimes south park handles thinks fine but this was not one of those cases
What do you think about those who come from countries who have an average height of 5'8" competing against those who's country has an average 5'1"? I don't think people should be excluded from sports for being on average, physically bigger, but rather we should have people who are already about the same build compete against each other. We measure jockey's weight (I know it's because of the horses), I think we, in the name of "fairness" should have people who are similar in body build compete. I don't believe trans women should be left out of sports, I think they should play against people who are also their body type. I'm 5'9", my trans friend is 5'6", she has been taking estrogen for years, and I am bigger and stronger than her, I am a cis woman. I think trans people should not be left out of something completely, it is really gross in my opinion.
In some sports, that's exactly how it works by design - like MMA, Muay Thai and boxing. Sex differences aren't limited to size though. We have different lung capacities, react to hormones differently, have different skeletal structures, heart sizes, muscle growth nature and rate (even when on hormones for years), and more - all things that make the playing field radically uneven. Exceptions don't break the rule, but prove them. It isn't just one way either; although males are faster, stronger and more durable than females on the whole, sports that require more flexibility tend to favour women when it comes to mastery. This debate tends to focus on women though, because that's again an exception to a rule, and one than can be explained. The idea isn't to remove all competition between people unless they match exactly to a phenotype (like you say, what would be the point of that?), but to ensure women have a way of competing. If it's all essentially one category, women at the top of their game lose the chance to play professionally because of their inherent physique patterns - and that's something hard-won only fairly recently in human history.
If you establish allowing lightweight fighters against heavyweights at a mass scale, you're lack of understanding in rules *will* get someone killed. It's not about the couple matches where things are dandy, but the numerous unfair fights, and even potential deaths.
@@idontlikehavingnumbersinmynameif those trans women become so weak that they can be replacements for their actual woman counterparts then shit that would be alright.
@@Truffs_Stuff I'm sorry, this line of thinking is flawed. Firstly, what happens when cis women start getting targeted like they already are in these arguments? Everyone has a different level of testosterone and estrogen in their bodies, and this is already starting to be used against women who have always been, and had been born, women. If you are even suspected of being too strong, you have to undergo tests to measure your testosterone levels. We just saw this with the Olympics, where do we draw the line? How far do we want to go while invading people's privacy in the name of protecting women's "only fairly recently", "hard won" ability to compete in sports? Seriously, the minute we start excluding who is considered "woman enough" into these debates, the more harm we do to ALL women. Y'all don't seem to get that. This will and already IS affecting "standard" female bodies that comply with all you just listed which, by the way, is kind of ridiculous to follow when you think about just how much the human body varies from person to person regardless of sex. In trying to defend and protect women, you're just making the box of what IS a woman smaller and smaller to the point there is nothing to protect anymore. You're removing womanhood instead of defending it. History proves it. When people use the rhetoric of "defending a cause" but to do that they say we need to remove others from that space, it always ends up turning on more and more people until inevitably it reaches themselves. The leopards TOTALLY won't eat our faces, right? Like I need everyone to understand this is straight up a fascist's playbook right?
@@misfits9294 True. L take from the OP and not surprised she is Br*tish. I was one accused of being trans since I am to quote them "Frumpy looking with short hair" and only cause I had lumps on my chest did the person back off that I qualified for womanhood. And even if I am cis I am a trans friend who coincidentally I could probably snap in two. OP isn't even correct as trans women have been in sports for years (and shows how much she knows about hard won and fairly recently.) It only became an issue recently since grifters could latch onto it.
Being fr this time, I get the argument you’re trying to make but I can name all the “heccin valid” rep on like a finger. There is way more anti trans rep in media overall, I think something positive for once is better than absolutely nothing but negativity.
Great video. Showcasing both Proud Family and Moon Girl is a great example of how badly modern Disney has fallen. They used to handle topics with at least some nuance back in the day but they are just lazy and pandering now.
Thank you! It definitely feels like a replacement for writing skill now - across the board. If these messages came with good writing and forethought, we wouldn't be getting the accusations of 'woke' against anything even vaguely involving women/minority groups (because unfortunately they're often right).
Yes, they handle bigotry peacefully back in the day. Now in Modern Day it just matters of "i'm more Snarky and BadAss than you" attitude when they're dealing with bigotry
@@I_Dont_Believe_In_Salad Yeah, there IS a way to address bigotry in a way that isn't flat out controversy bait. It feels like all these modern writers want to do is bait controversy.
Honestly, if there isn't any advantage a certain biological sex gets in a game, I don't see the problem of a trans person being on the same gender teams What I _do_ see the problem as, is when people portray one side horribly! It's like a weirdly done An Inspector Calls (I love aic)
Ditto! In darts, pool (afaik, I've heard arguments about pool though), target shooting, etc, I don't think it matters at all. Even when it does, it doesn't necessitate or denote any hatred towards trans people to acknowledge that. It's a complex topic for sure, and especially when safety is the main concern of one party, going out and simplifying it to 'ew baddies' vs goodies is insulting to everyone's intelligence 😅
Or women are allowed to feel safe and welcome in their own sports and spaces? Why is it real women are the ones vilified for bot feeling comfortable with men in their spaces?
One thing I didn't see mentioned in the video is that the episode sort of proves the coach right in a way. Like when they're locked in the changing room only Brooklyn does anything to escape it, being shown as stronger, faster, smarter, and more agile, than the other biological girls on her team. I feel like it would've been better for their message to show everyone doing equal work to her to show that she's equal to the other biological woman on her team, but instead in an attempt to empower trans people they showed the trans woman as being better, and more capable, than the other biological woman.
Full stop, I think no matter the episode, The Gatekeeper is just shitty writing overall. Like, it needed a full rewrite, this is an issue with a lot of episodes like this, they try to portray the "special" character as actually being better than everyone, over showing a full story. To show that Brooklynn is JUST AS MUCH AS ONE OF THE GIRLS, they should've had a full teamwork focus vs empowering Brooklynn only. While I hope the episode does bring a ton of comfort to those it's meant for, for those who managed to find it, the episode full stop is just poorly written... which is just a general "PSA" type episodes problem. They're always over the top
In a way, they accidentally proved the stereotype they were trying to break. If they showed that Brooklynn wasn't better than her peers, but had to rely on her teammates just like anybody else would, it would basically show that she's one of the girls, instead of making her good at everything.
@@tempestvenator9809 Exactly. If we had seen stuff focusing on her together, not just the whole "She's doing it all her own" thing and then have it be rewarded. The whole thing foreshadowed earlier how she refused to let anyone do anything except her, could've been a good segueway into her teammates admitting that they DO sometimes feel uncomfortable, when she takes charge and it feels like they can't say anything to her without her getting upset at them. Make it be a duality issue. Because I've also struggled with my mental health and when my people called me out on my behavior, I wanted to get better. A duality of issues where Brooklynn due to her insecurities is tossing away her teammates and determined to do it on her own and thus, the real secret to beating the horrible coach's plan is to team up and later talk about their problems
It's quite disappointing that disney, with all there employees, wasent able to make a cohesivene story or adress these issues in the right way. I dont understand why disney has to pander all the time and cant make trans people just seem like regular people. Now as a trans man, i can speak on behalf of trans women, but i do feel like i have made an opinion on this topic. Making "transphobes" very ugly and look like villians will make the far right just hate trans people even more. I cannot understand how they thought that wouls help at all. Then on the topic of trans women in womens sports. Its extremely hard because every person is different. Yes, trans women have a biological advantage in sports, and i know how incredibly dysphoric that can make some trans women since thats the whole point of there being a disconnect between the mind and the body. Many trans women quit doing sports due to that fact while others i have met are comfortable being on male sports teams but at the same time if your on estrogen you could be putting yourself in danger. I have suggested before that there be separate teams for trans people but that would take a lot of budget and im not even sure if that many trans people who want to do sports professionally exist. What im thinking is that you could put trans women on womens teams just for training but when it comes to competing put trans women against other trans women! Also I would just like to add there are many other sports that are mixed gendered! For example cheerleading, which can have both males and females, and since it's a primarily women dominated sport it could also be quite gender affirming.
I agree on your "when it comes to competing put trans women against other trans women" but Real World seems to not figure that out yet and continue to make women uncomfortable around trans women to this day
It’s more on the people working on the show than Disney, since this episode is scraped but saved on the archives website for anyone to watch until it gets taken down
Far right people will hate us regardless if we make them look like the bad guys or not. I've seen countless trans people like yourself be nice, and or bend yourself over backwards just to appease them only to get spit on for some crumbs. They've been stripping our rights away while we sit and play nice. And you condensing the conversation with trans women in sports as just "Yes trans women have a biological advantage in sports" by using your authority as a trans guy, when it's a lot more complicated than a yes and no answer since human biology varies fucking sucks. Maybe I'm misinterpreting that latter statement but that's incredibly frustrating as a trans man myself, especially when you just make the claim that estrogen can be dangerous to trans women's bodies, what do you mean by that? Disney has never shown trans people so I have no damn clue wtf you're talking about with this pandering bs when it comes to trans rep. Don't give Disney credit for shit like Owl House because that's the only example of trans representation.
A social issue in a piece of media is being handled with all the subtlety of an anvil being dropped from a mid-flight airplane. And said media manages to make many people look bad, even the people it's trying to put into a positive light. I'm so shocked. Totally. Really.
A group of people being constantly victimized finally has a crumb of positive representation, which shows the frustration of living in a world where the rules are constantly rigged against them, but OH NO IT MIGHT MAKE THE TRANSPHOBES ANGY BETTER HIDE IT WHY CAN'T THE TRANSES BEHAVE AND STAY IN THE BOX WE'RE FORCING THEM INTO?!?!?! 🙄
"they're usually really good at doing rep to other topics so I'm surprised to see it done so poorly here" maybe that's why they decided not to release the episode??????
Supposedly she bought it at a garage sale or something, but the way the episode handles it makes no sense. Why would she already have the key and have a plan to sabotage the team when she had no issue with them prior to learning that Brooklyn was trans?
@@misfits9294 Example A. How disney pretends to care about LGBTQ+ but really just make scenes and characters easily cut or misread so they don't offend the countries that give them money
Honestly, I feel like there's a lot more to the issue this episode brings up than what can be tackled in a half hour episode. And let's be honest, I don't think anyone would want DISNEY of all companies to be the one to try it.
I do think that we should all be more open to debates and different opinions. Me and my mom have VERY different opinions, hers being far more controversial. But despite that one of her core values is that you need to be able to defend your beliefs. In this episode however (from what I have seen so far and what is included in this video) is that Coach Greer barely ever says her reasoning other then “ThIs Is A gIrLs LeAgUe”. If we only portray the other side as being wrong and unreasonable while ours only being right and reasonable we develop a fixed mindset that won’t let us accept or respect other people’s opinions
7:52 Hey, that's just like the father character in my story, not wanting his daughter to pursue a music career as he worries she'll be taken advantage of by sleazy pervs in the industry.
tho I loved "The gatekeeper", what you said is 100% true. Not to invalidate others' point of view. I love the episode as a haha-like silly antagonist, but not as an actual answer to the debate
I do agree that there's nuance to discussion over whether trans women should be competing in womens' sports teams but Greer isn't meant to be the opposing argument in that debate. She's not worried about fairness (which. Brooklyn is very young, we're not talking about pro-level teams, lots of school teams are co-ed, she should absolutely be allowed to compete in whatever team she wants), she's just transphobic. She clearly doesn't see Brooklyn as a girl. And your phrasing makes it seem like you agree. Brooklyn isn't a "biological male". She's AMAB but she's a girl and should be referred to as such. You phrase it like Brooklyn is a boy kicking a girl. She's a girl not kicking a grown adult. There's nothing unsafe about Brooklyn being on the team. She's a child and her team supports her. Nobody's feeling unsafe in this situation except Greer, who's being a total creep by stalking a child. She's hardly even a caricature which is really disturbing but it's true, I've met people who are very much like her. I don't know if you consider yourself pro-trans but as a nonbinary trans person, I don't think you should. This whole video is extremely critical of the child and very defensive of the transphobe. Hurtful language is used throughout. Maybe talk to some trans women and actually learn how to be an ally.
Imma keep it a buck, I disagree heavily and I feel this is a very apples to oranges comparison with using that particular Proud Family episode as an example. But you do you. Solid editing tho.
Well yea, it's typical of disney not to advertise shows with good representation of minorities very well if at all Amphibia only got popular through word of mouth too
@@Mae4Ever I have a younger cousin that watched the owl house n stuff Also plenty of adults talk about Bluey too, that doesn't mean no kids like Bluey It should also be taken into account that of course older voices are going to be more dominant online, I'd be pretty concerned if 10 year olds were making their own youtube videos since the minimum age to use this website and most social media is 13-16

How would you know that unless you frequent in children circles...? Children see so many things on the internet its getting harder and harder each day to keep track of it, especially as cable TV dies and streaming takes over. Also Shifty is right, this show doesn't advertise its shows well- though to my knowledge it has gotten decent/ok ratings
Wendell and Wild movie they have trans character name Raul. In one scene Siobhan a friend of Raul who is estranged accidentally using his deadname. Siobhan action is wrong but it wasn't malicious infact she say "Sorry raul i've keep forgetting." They don't demonize her it reveal how once raul and siobhan are closed. There's also a scene where raul mother also have to deal with people intentionally misgender Raul, they show us people who is intentional and some who is unintentional
Well, tbh,I guess this a flaw that is need to be fixed by the team. I know this episode is done with good faith but I think the team should do some research just in case.
@@Truffs_Stuff So you're saying it's probably the worst episode of the series? Because honestly, that's the vibe I'm getting from both this video and what other people have to say about this episode compared to the rest of the show as a whole.
@@spencerpetunia8268absolutely, the other episodes (even Hair Today Gone Tomorrow, which is about social issues around black hair) are much more about the sci-fi quirkiness of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur as an IP. Even ones that are a bit more grounded in reality are much more fun than this!
Not really. Women’s sports are already underfunded and swept under the rug in most cases (unless there is “drama” involved) and there’s such a small margin of trans athletes that they wouldn’t be able to sustain themselves. Most people only watch male sports (don’t hit me with the “well I watch women’s sports!” because you might, but most sports fans do not), and the WNBA already gets a ton of shit for being sponsored while getting less views. Something needs to be done, but I don’t think it’s as simple as “putting mtf and ftm people in their own leagues”.
My problem with the episode is that they never really addressed why having Brooklyn on a team was a Good or Bad thing. Instead of tackling the question if a trans-person should participate a cis-gendered Sport (Especially if they were born with the Opposite sex), the episode instead continues to be nothing than a "Yes Man" to the audience. They'd much prefer to put a character on an untouched pedestal, and force down how progressive they are, rather of seeing both sides of the Couches and Brook's argument and find command ground or have a change of perspective of the subject matter.
Absolutely! My main criticism in this video isn't that I disagree with its message, more that it did itself and the topic a disservice by not handling it respectfully; as is, it feels like they have too little faith in their own opinions to actually explore what the opposing side is saying. They could have shown that Brooklyn is just like any other girl, and not a threat or an unfair advantage. Brooklyn seems like an interesting enough character too. She appears in other eps, but I'd like to see her written into a better main role than this, whether her being trans is the focus or not.
You're making it really obvious that you don't aren't trans and don't actually know anything about the issues or even biology of what being trans means, and if you're trying to hold any allyship with this video, you've failed miserably. We don't want to be seen as some special 3rd entity next to men and women, we want to be perceived as just another kind of women, because that is what we are. Men and women have differences in how their bodies work, but after a few years of hormonal therapy, a trans women's body is nowhere near as close to a man's body as it is to a cisgender woman's. And if anything, taking testosterone blockers and taking estrogen only makes trans women weaker, but that's just what I know of, there's no source for that. Also just saying "biological female" and "biological male" doesn't literally mean anything, what is not biological about trans women? We aren't mechanic, we're just as biological as cis women are. The episode isn't perfect, it is cartoonish and dumb with how it communicates, but that is literally because it's a show for children. If you made a big complicated argument about the debate of how trans women could overpower cis women in sports (which is unlikely to happen in a majority of cases but again that is just me), none of the kids who would be watching it would understand, even if they were queer themself. This literally was meant to be an episode about trans women, the only episode in the show, showing the kids watching that trans women are in fact women, even if different, and that they shouldn't be taking anyone's complaints for it, it was meant to give them a empowerment, yet you subject the trans character to the same prejudices as any other transphobe does.
You want to be seen as a type of woman but you are not allowed to dismiss the fact your body is boologically male and the issues that raises in sports. Saying theres no difference is just a lie that defies reality, no one will respect that take. While those that are under blockers and estrogen will be weaker than they would be otherwise, they still have far more testostorone than a cis woman will ever have - for comparison, take a look at the T levels of woman banned for doping. This is not to speak of frame, muscle mass, bone density, etc. Im sorry being trans can be tough, but thats not a pass to just do whatever you want
@@KotoCrash Did you even read what I wrote? "Biologically male" doesn't mean anything, what does that even prove? And the bit about trans women having more testosterone in their bodies just isn't true, you could have fact checked that with a single google search. Sure, if a trans woman just starts estrogen and is mostly still in a male body, that is unfair, but no one like that is going to be entering a women's sport competition. Also if it was true, how is that different from women who naturally have more testosterone? And don't say that they could use that maliciously to get an advantage because that just is not true, no human thinks like that and would go in the immense trouble of transitioning to do that. You're just being ignorant. You wouldn't care a bit about women's sports at all if it wasn't for trans women wanting to compete as well, and you just say things that you think are true but have no real substance.
@@robloxovejkanal9278 "Biologically male" has a very concrete and clear meaning. Trans women have biologically male bodies. Its why theyre trans women and not cis women. In most contexts you can argue that doesnt matter, but not here. Those differences give trans women an unfair advantage over cis women. Not just due to higher levels of testosterone than cis women will ever have (outside illegal doping) - but frame, muscle growth, lung capacity, bone density, etc. That can never be "fixed". Check Google Scholar if you dont believe me. A fact is a fact, whether I care about women's sports or not (And I do, I watch the WNBA every year).
I done btw. You can keep replying but its a waste of time if you cant even concede something as basic as "Trans womens bodies are different in ways to cis women bodies"
This woman: Literally beat a man to the point of being hospitalized and stalked a trans person People: Why Brooklyn kicked her and why she is antagonized Now replace the fact that a man would hit a female coach, that she would be hospitalized, and then he would stalk a trans boy for being assigned female Come on, show your sexism and patriarchy
She didn't - he slipped on one of those orange slices all the kids were eating Which as a side note is baffling, who just throws orange peel on the ground under their feet 😭
I don't think it was a smart idea for this episode to have the trans player on a volleyball team. A sport that has had many instants of trans players severely injuring their female opponents often times sending them to the hospital. In the Proud Family episode, Penny fully knew the risks when she wanted to join a boys sport. However those who have to face Brooklyn signed up to play against girls, not biological boys. The knowledge of risk is not equal in these cases. While both sports can cause injuries, there is certainly a difference when it comes to boys and girls sports (which the Proud episode emphasized). Injuries due to trans players has actually become so common that some players and even whole teams have forfeited matches just to avoid playing them. There may be some instances where trans players are on the same footing as others on their team, but there are just too many who aren't. If the concern is for the player's safety, then I would have to side on the evil coach on this one.
i kinda like this episode cuz i can at least see the attempt, and to me an attempt is better than never trying at all, and while i can agree that leaking isnt the most ideal solution i view it as like violence, sometimes, very rarely but sometimes, it is the only solution. im a girl that played baseball as a lil kid but for disabilitys and i wondered why i had to play with only the disabilitys and not the other normal kids, i loved baseball but after awhile i knew i may have not been the most ideal person they want in a team but yeah, ik Disabilitys doesnt get as bad as a rep as trans, but hey still, i am just sharing this to show i, at least to some level, understand this episodes attempt.
Tbh, this episode backfired Disney. And doesn't appeal or give any ideas to children with this episode. All of this convincing the public to "protecting trans kids" was a waste of energy and time to promote because "there's still more LGBT rights to be fought". And it doesn't relate to the Proud Family as well. If you had both teams mixed with male and female in a basketball game, it is likely boys will tackle the whole court than girls.
It depends on the sport, and girls also have to play more sports, many don't because it's a "man's thing", this affects them too, less experience and such.
It's funny to me how you focus all your energy on how Brooklyn being angry is bad and how Brooklyn collecting the keys on her own is bad, and how trans women are such a threat to cis women in sports, and not a single word about the monolugue where she's crying about being controled by the people around her for who she is. Plus you put shitty memes over it, completely disrespecting anything she was saying. I hope you never talked of yourself as an ally, because you are not that.
@@KotoCrash I'm not saying that. I'm saying that it's pathetic to act like you care about trans women when you fail to talk about the actual issues that they have, and instead focus on mostly unreal problems of how trans women will outclass cis women in sports. That scene said a lot in the episode, and she didn't give it a single honest word.
@@krystofsobotka3069 It isn't an unreal problem though is it? It's as concrete as you can get - scientific, you could say. And why are we talking about about trans women in sports instead of other trans issues? Maybe because this is a review of an episode that is wholly about that. An episode that states bluntly that trans people should be allowed in women's sport. In other words, it is the topic at hand my dude. Nothing else is really said either. She's sad she gets "shut out", but it all ties into that core message - "Greer doesn't think Brooklyn should be able to play, Brooklyn and the show thinks she should". In other words, "there are no female spaces or situations that trans people shouldn't also be able to occupy". Having the character cry about it doesn't make it any less debatable at best, outright wrong at worst.
@@KotoCrash If it's scientific, can you please show me the sources? Because from what I know and searched up, there is not a nearly significant enough difference to be an actual problem. And okay, the episode was not specifically about that, but it was an episode focused on a trans feminine character, so it should come with it that those things should also be discussed. It's sad for me to see that you see it this way, that you only see trans women as some parasytes that want to destroy women at their own competitions, but that is not true. There's only a very tiny amount of trans women that actually do profesional sports, nor you or I could name a single one, but that just shows how much this issue isn't about the games being fair, as it is about transphobia and excluding trans women purely out of fear of us being different.
@@krystofsobotka3069 I dont see them as beong parasites. But I do see them in womens sports as unfair. It could be 100 trans atheletes or it could be 1 and itd still be wrong. I hate to say it, but you are different from cis women. Doesnt mean youre not one, but you gotta accept that... yeah. There are differences, and in this context the differences cause problems. Sports isnt about any sociology or identity politics. Its purely about fair competition.
While I think your viewpoint is fair and valid I think it plays into the very concept that Moon Girl is trying to say. You brought up Proud Family as a example of it being done better but Proud Family’s issues are quite different from Moon Girls and obviously your own politics play into your opinion of this. Moon Girl believes that it didn’t matter what Brooklyn did. It doesn’t matter if the main villain was cartoonishly evil or more multi layered. The idea is still the same that there was never a version that would allow a trans girl into a woman’s sport regardless.
Ok, I just rewatched this episode and... it wasn't good as I originally thought. I'm just gonna say transphobia is a serious topic and shouldn't be use for comedic laughs. Unless you use it for morals and lessons, don't make an episode based off it. That can cause the show to lose all the charm it originally had. PB & GB, for example, really handled this topic in a better way (even if there's some jokes here and there). Thankfully Moon Girl didn't end up in the same lane as the painfully horrible Proud Family reboot as most of the other episodes were still enjoyable.
Besides Truff's suggestions to have the main character from the opposing side instead be Greer's daughter, and to portray her as someone who's genuinely concerned about her and her teammates' safety if they play against a trans girl for understandable reasons instead of being a one-note cariacture that's evil for the sake of being evil like Greer is in the episode we actually got? Probably to instead have the featured sport be something that involves much more physical contact and/or direct raw physical competition, such as basketball (girls'/women's basketball is (IN)FAMOUSLY as much of a contact sport as a technically "non-contact" sport can get), boxing, wrestling, water polo, swimming, or track/field, since the two most genuinely compelling and logical arguments against trans female athletes being allowed to compete against cis female athletes are the safety of cis female athletes if they now have to directly face off against trans female athletes who didn't start and/or consistently stay on effective dosages of HRT until well after they'd started male puberty and, of course, the fact that a trans girl/woman who doesn't start and/or consistently stay on effective dosages of HRT until well after she starts male puberty often DOES have a raw physical advantage over cis girls/women due to the simple fact that, like it or not, people assigned male at birth have evolved to have more brute strength, speed, lung capacity, etc. possible if they undergo a typical male puberty so they can better do stuff like fighting and hunting than have people assigned female at birth-this is literally why women's-only sports leagues are a thing in the first place, because generally people who were assigned female at birth are going to have their asses handed to them in sports that require more physical contact and direct physical competition by people who were assigned male at birth. Volleyball, from what I've seen of it, doesn't really depend that much on either physical contact or direct physical competition compared to, say, basketball because in volleyball both sides stay physically distant from each other and gameplay depends on being able to "catch" and hit back a ball that's hit over a tall net.
i feel like forcing people into radical groups feels cult-like anyway... idk why people insist you MUST be on a side. its so strange and it kind of discourages any nuanced thinking.
Take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt but but handling IRL issues in a cartoony fashion is what this show does sometimes. Back in season 1 Lunella made a hair monster just to get a lesson in black woman hair care, as well as a tech power couple was "needed" to teach people about gentrification.
That they do! I loved the hair episode, they did a much better job with that! I both hated my natural hair growing up (like Lunella I also got thoughtless sarky comments about my hair from other kids) and eventually learned how to love it kinda by force haha Black/black mixed girls go through this so often to this day tbh - it breaks my heart to see the cycle repeated, and I can only hope episodes like the MGADD hair one help others not to go through the insecurity I and my forebears did!
As ironic to call this episode the gatekeeper. I’m glad this episode didn’t go as unhinged as the proud reboot but I also agree on the proud football episode. It showed how yes girls can play sports, and there are times people are bigots, it felt real. Vs Karen DeVil is more petty an not all there. Another show that makes a good point is ned declassified when the teacher explains why you should accept you height tall or short. Our bodies grow at different rates. Cool to know we have the video to view what the public would think. Despite that probably put them in hot water.
i agree! there has to be some sort of way we can meet a halfway point... sports should be fair, and it would be unfair to put a afab person against a amab person when there is such a insane biological difference most of the time. there needs to be a way where sports can be safe for people but also inclusive. ppl gotta remmeber, just because trans rights matter doesnt mean you throw woman rights out the window! we should try and make it safe and fun for everyone....
I'm not familiar with this show but this vid probably got recommended to me because I'm trans myself however I would have to agree that it seems like the show could've handled the subject with more grace and understanding on both fronts. The entire cluster storm that is the subject of trans people in sports isn't as much of a debate as it's a moral panic of countless falsehoods, misunderstandings and animosity. At best many remain grossly misinformed or unguided and at worst there are bad faith arguments from people unwilling to listen, it's a shame then that this episode would take a stance that many see as legitimate and reduce it to a ridiculous caricature that won't be taken seriously instead of addressing it properly in order to actually dismantle harmful attitudes. While this appears to be a kid's show it would've been better for the episode to ignore the issue rather than tackle it haphazardly which will only cause further harm to the trans community (maybe just have the plot line be the coach for the other teaming wanting to cheat in order to win instead of having Brooklyn be trans as the problem). If the episode wanted to adress concerns about trans people in sports the other team's coach should've been far more grounded and for the episode to focus on some of the main things often brought up, the main being that Brooklyn is a "biological male". Although a common point brought up I doubt the episode would've had the time to fully disclose how open to interpretation such a term actually is since there's a lot it could be referring to: Are we talking about hormone levels? Are we talking about chromosomes? Are we talking about reproduction? Are we talking about brain development and associated behaviours? Some things are relevant within the context of sports and some aren't and of the things that are relevant it also overlaps with other aspects that affect everyone regardless if they're trans or cis such as socialization and nature vs nurture or genes themselves (which makes it so even cis people of the same gender aren't ever going to truly be "equal" to one another). Most often I'd assume people are concernced with puberty development in adolescent kids and teens but the sport players in the episode all seem to be very young (early teens perhaps) and Brooklyn herself looks to be having breast development which would indicate that she's actually on HRT where her dominant sex hormone is estrogen instead of testosterone so its unlikely that she's ever gone through male puberty (that is letting testosterone develop her instead of estrogen) or at the very least been through it to the point of making a significant difference. It's sad that the episode would show Brooklyn outperforming everyone in her team (and having her team mates not really contribute by the looks of it) since it buys into this idea that she's winning because she's AMAB (assigned male at birth) however there could be things about her that we don't know like if she's got good genes or even just having spent a lot of time training, why would a victory automatically mean she's got an advantage for being AMAB (especially when she seemingly isn't even going through male puberty)? There's no way this show could tackle all these different things in a single episode but some improvements that could've been done is having Brooklyn's team contribute more to the challenges they face (they're a team after all), have the antagonist coach question her views after Brooklyn would fail one of the coach's tasks she thought Brooklyn could handle for "being a boy" or something like it. It's not good to just call one side bad when so many people support it, what's needed is honest and good faith detailing of the intricacies at play in order to bring understanding and acceptance where it lacks, this episode just isn't it by the looks of things. It's disheartening how a lot of modern media use minorities as a shield against bad writing because it just makes people hate us, despite my lack of energy to engage with these matters I acknowledge the importance of really bringing to light the complex nature of life. I myself once held a lot of reservations about trans people as a result of my lack of knowledge, I only grew to understanding after realising I'm trans and taking genuine time to learn with an open mind because I had to. The vast majority of people won't ever have to learn and so I'm afraid that many sadly won't.
13:33 I mean, to be fair, the gentrification episode wasn't the best either - still vastly superior to this, but not by *that* much. I've never experienced the issue myself, so I can't speak firsthand on whether the issue itself was tackled well, but the villains kinda suffered the same issue as Coach Greer, in that they're just stereotypical 1-note baddies. Like... that's not how you tackle these issues, writers!
No such thing as a stupid question! 🙂 Most people are a bit in the dark about what hormones can or can't do until they take hormone therapies themselves. Estrogen won't cause super drastic outward changes (unlike what T does), but it can improve muscle function and loosen ligaments - not good for a hypermobile person 😅. T blockers also increase the presence of magnesium in the body, which can help muscle function too.
6:15 I mean... what's wrong with taking issue with "girl power"? I mean, granted, pooh-poohing it in *this* context is just downright silly, but just replace "girl" with "white", and... yeah, suddenly it's not so wholesome anymore, is it?
The difference is girls are discriminated against and used girl power to encourage younger girls to stand up for themselves in a sexist situation created by men or self hating women. White ppl didn't experience this. They were the ones in power. There's no reason for them to have white power be a thing.
The thicc coach is right too, i mean the trans girl is the strongest to the point to crack the floors out of rage. As if they actually want people to despise the message even more
@ boys hit puberty at 9 and by the time they hit ten they have passed there female counterparts in muscle, maturity, and growth so at 12 boys are far stronger then girls. So yes vary much when they are 12 and what’s worse is I believe boys stay in puberty longer then girls like girls end there’s at like 15-17 boys it’s 16-18.
This is why the show got canceled, but it's stupid because everything about the show was entertaining and good, the animation, the character designs, the voice acting, and the whole story, but Disney had to cancel it because it had trans and gay stuff in it? And again, it's honestly really stupid...🙄
well when you make a show with those characters in it, targeted to kids, your pretty much isolating half of the world and most of America for your audience. its likely that they just weren't making enough money, and blamed it on homophobes, racists, sexists, and transphobes to deflect like they do every time a movie or tv show of theirs fails. latest example, Acolyte.
3:56 question how come only the " trans " person looks more like girl over everyone else in their own " girls' team " and don't let me start on the big and buff male couch what happened with toxic musicality bad
Imagine if someone like Greer was the main protagonist on an animated sitcom released on Twitter, and they hate seeing rainbows everywhere specifically on beer cans and would just want normal beer
Honestly they picked the worst topic for this episode and seemed to be heavily biased by showcasing the villain as a wackjob when she kinda has a point for her concerns. Now in this scenario they are kids, so its a little bit more fine, I'd say. I (ftm) have played against boys at school, and particularly in team sports its not much of an issue. Still, trans women in sports is a debate in which this caricature of a person does kinda have a valid opinion. Doesnt help that the sport thats been picked hasnt exactly been the safest sport out there either. Like there are definitely sports where men and women are more on equal ground compared to other and i could assume maybe trans women dont have as much of an advantage there. And in this episode its athletic prowess and strength saved them which is exactly the issue with trans women in womens sports. Its fine to have brooklyn be athletic and stronger than other girls. Itd be no issue if the kids did get in a situation where strength is needed and brooklyn solves it. But because this is paired up with sports (in a competitive setting it seems), thats an issue. Honestly i think the idea of a looney transphobe isnt necessarily bad, but the scenario should be different. It feels a bit like when cartoons do this "murder is bad. If i do it im as bad as them" thing, while MC is deciding the fate of a mass murderer or after another character condemns the guy who kills said mass murderer, like their action was bad. Yeah the coach in this episode was definitely looney, but there is a part of her that has a point. This episode kinda makes it seem like everybody who is against trans women in womens sports hates trans women. And its not it. There are definitely insane people like that coach who absolutely oppose the existence of trans people but most people arent like that, and the majority want women to have their spaces based on sex. I feel like some people forget that biological sex matters and sports are based on this (with the exception of trans men who would obviously not compete with their birth sex unless they didnt go through hrt). We can respect trans women and their identity, but we also cant throw respect for women under the bus for them. Sometimes you gotta give up things to live the way you want. Like for many of us trans people thats our fertility. Some dont plan to have children (at least biological ones) at all and are fine with that, while for others that might be a tough decision. And some decide to go through with transitioning still because thats how they want to live. Same with athletes. I heard of some trans man who still competes with women but isnt on T, and its clear he made this decision to not lose what he loves (sports) and i 100% stand behind it, just like any trans man who may decide to give up on the womens division and go on T. There are probably trans women who also may not transition and remain in mens sport or give up on their career and live life as a woman (actually i know one person like that and she is happy about her decision). This is just the reality of being trans. Its tough and sometimes you gotta accept things as they are. Thats why i dont like how Brooklyn complains that the rules are so unfair and restrictive and as it seems us the viewers gotta feel like she has been wronged, when in reality, maybe she is in the wrong her PS: tbh before watching this i thought the episode would be about Tai, which tbh could have been interesting with how they might have interacted with a transphobic person, and i think if they were the focus we would actually side more with them
Really well put man, thank you for your thoughtful comment! I kinda felt for Brooklyn in this context too; she's 13, kids are impressionable, and in reality a lot of the narrative on this would be talking her into feeling even more upset than she already is by insisting gendered categories in sport are arbitrary, and therefore unnecessarily restrictive. I can imagine that especially at an age where all your emotions are big anyway, feeling like you've been wronged on basis of an already stressful trait you didn't choose (namely gender dysphoria) is going to weigh heavy on your psyche. Brooklyn must feel besieged on all sides, even if she's incorrect about her access to the girls' league being a right, rather than something to sincerely discuss and think about. Transitioning seems to put you in a tough spot in a lot of areas of your life (like the athlete you mention who gave up her sporting career), but I suppose that's part of what one weighs up when deciding whether to respond to their dysphoria that way or not. It's such an interesting topic, and it's always illuminating to hear from people like you with first-hand experiences that I (and many people talking about this) don't have. 🙂
This is such a controversial topic that doesn't have a right answer. Either way someone is going to be at a disadvantage or excluded. That's why this needs to be up for debate so that we can come up with our own conclusions based off facts and information rather than someone just saying it's right or wrong.
That "disadvantage" won't even change much, if you think the women will get absolutely wrecked just because of one bio make them that's completely wrong.
@@Truffs_Stufffrom what I’ve researched, when a transwoman goes on estrogen at least for two years, the muscle and fat decrease to one of an average cis woman. So on the side that argues for transwomen in sports, their estrogen and muscle mass would match. Of course, i only did an hour of research but thats what I found. Theres a way to portray this issue, and portray both sides as human.

I'm very shocked about this aswell. However, with Tai, someone identifying as neither a boy or a girl can still be feminine or masculine, and there isn't a nonbinary team for them to join anyhow.

wow you really dragged me along for 5 minutes before you revealed that you're a terf...........gotta put that in the opener baby i coulda been watching monster factory
she does't seem like a terf to me bro. she makes valid points, respects the characters pronouns, while also acknowledging the valid concerns that many people have over this topic. you realize alot of trans allies including trans people themselves hold this opinion? there is a difference in biology, and that effects the fairness of the game as well as if it can be dangerous for certain people. a amab persons body is majority of the time going to be way stronger than a afab persons, thats just a fact. we have these differences in sports so afabs can have a fair shot at playing a game w/ others with a similar build to them. does that mean that trans women are men? no. if a person says they use she/her pronouns and id as a girl they are one, but the fact still remains they have a biological difference that gives them an advantage that can be unfair to other people. if anything, isn't this mindset with shutting down anyone who has this opinion (ESCPECIALLY a woman who is expressing her opinion) come across extremely sexist? It just feels like another case of cis men telling women to shut up. We shouldn't fight. All of us just want to live. Not everyone wants to spread hate. But this "us vs them" mentality doesn't help anything. Refusing to listen to others doesn't help anything. Demonizing people who you do not understand doesn't help anything. It just creates more drama, more fights, and less understanding.
I thought the sports theming of the episode was coincidental. Without it, it's a -good- fine episode about how some people hide behind(and sometimes make up) rules(i.e. you must look, sound and act very feminine) to justify their transphobia, and remain transphobic even if a trans woman passes in every regard. Hence the focus on rules and how Brooke passes all of them. I didn't consider it as an episode about trans women in sport until recently.
Granted, they could've done more in that reading of the episode, i.e. instead of the girls not passing because Brooke was trans, they each couldn't pass because they completed the challenges "the wrong way". Then that could refer to how transphobes hurt cis women as well as trans women by making up rules or being sticklers
I imagine Tai isn’t an issue to coach Greer because she considers it a fad like punks goths and emos before, it’s popular so lots of people imitate it and will grow out of it. I think she is a girl btw. Entertaining as always love your stuff.
Episodes like these simply aren’t meant to promote discussion or let audiences see things from different points of view, they’re made to villainize and punish different perspectives no matter how worthy of consideration they may be on paper. It’s highly irresponsible and terrible to teach especially to children, and being a show aimed at children is precisely the reason you can’t be this irresponsible and strawmanny.
My problem isn't the cartoonish villain, because the majority of transphobes ARE cartoonishly vile and behave incredibly weird. My problem is that they made Brooklyn the perfect person ever, with the only "issue" being that she's trans. It feels Mary Sue esque. The only real struggle is just being trans. It doesn't even remotely touch on the other aspects of being trans, the struggles they face other than weird Karen energy bigotry. It feels so weird that the trans women's strength is the physical "manly" strength of just breaking things. I do wish it was more focused on the kids working together as a team and focused on bigotry being taught to the kids on the other team by the coach, showing how quickly it can get picked up and spread. If anyone were to land any kicks to the coach at the end, it probably should've been any of the cis kids either on Moon Girl's team or the opposing team, it would've been a good opportunity to showcase character growth for the side characters rather than leaving them as stagnant props for the plot.
I love cartoon as much as the next guy but their is a limit on how much it can shape the culture, when tolkien write "lord of the ring" he express his christine values in his book, I doubt that all his fan are religious.
9:08 You mean a straw woman. Yes, I know the usual phrase is strawman, but like... if Lindybeige can make a whole rant video about why actresses should be called actresses and not actors, shouldn't it be less proper to refer to women with phrases that actually use the word "man" (without the "wo" in front)?
The episode is very interesting due to how it's received by how one half believes that these type of shows cater to "mentally stagnant adults who need to be validated" and the other believe that stuff like this doesn't need to be subtle. I definitely know that some cartoons tackle (sensitive) topics and I know people like to use Static Shock (and possible classic Proud Family and Teen Titans) due to how it handles the topics it uses where the most famous are Sons of the Father (racism) and Jimmy (bullying). To me, it sounds like both sides would rather create a situation that'll create more ammo for each other for bad apples because they wanna feel correct on their stance.

Studies have been made and proved that trans athletes don't outperform cis ones.
That's the thing
Male athletes at their peak always outclass female athletes at their peak
The only cases of female athletes dominating male opponents are when the male was an elderly veteran with their best years behind them, or a beginner

@natalimoina idk
it kinda feels like the coach was one of those characters an artist would use to make their point more clearer by making them all angry and crazy while their character is the more rational reasonable one.
Honestly even though I don’t think all the criticisms towards the episode is not valid.
Being subtle sometimes works against your message. Real life transphobes like JK Rowling and Trump really are mentally stunted sociopaths, so why give them unnecessary depth?
Except that's just how a lot of transphobic people are they had to reduce the worst because of it being a show for kids.
So sorry 🙄
@@DanielJacobs-rz1zl How many cartoons are depicting transphobes openly...?
I think there were a lot of good points made, but the framing of Brookyln breaking the key as a "biological male" almost booting a "biological female" is strange. Brookyln is a child and Coach Greer is an adult. The sex of either party isn't relevant when its a grown adult vs a twelve year old, especially since the adult was the aggressor. Plus it was clear Brookyln had no intention of hitting her, only breaking the key in her hand. Again, good points were made, but I feel this was not one of them.

I'm going to be clear. I don't really have an opinion over the "Trans people in sports" debate
For starters I stopped identifying as a trans woman recently for personal manners and I have no interest in biology of sport or how adding a trans woman among cis women in sports would play out
With all due respects I'm here to simply try to say that I have not really payer attention to the episode being about Trans people in sports and I thought it was more about how "Trans people have it way worse because people veiw us not as people but as statments"
It could be a way into the episode. The episode could be that unsubtle and just plainly about trans people in sports
But honestly as someone who identified as a trans woman I honestly felt personally touched way more then in any other kind of queer repersention before. It
felt like my struggles of just not being able to live normally without being misrable on the inside were seen
But I understand the criticism livid against the episode for the portrayal of the other side of the debate
If the episode was rewritten more about how trans kids are treated in schools I think it could have continued with the overly cartoonish villain
But what do you expect from Disney? Ain't no way their brave enough for this episode let alone one like my idea
Nice video btw
"If the episode was rewritten more about how trans kids are treated in schools I think it could have continued with the overly cartoonish villain"
That's the same thing I was thinking.
Real life transphobes are not complex people, they are just sociopaths who do ridiculously cartoonish things like Elon Musk

This is incorrect assumption of the episode. A lot of trans people feel like they have to do everything on their own as a result and Brooklyn feels like she needs to but that part causes it’s own damages and alone she would have failed
It only with friends she succeeded
Tell us you're media illiterate WITHOUT telling us you're media illiterate.

In the episode she literally states that she feels like a burden to the team. When someone feels like a burden they'll typically do more than they have to and overcorrect in order to get rid of that feeling
You can see when they start breaking the system to escape that they start to work more as a team because the team assured her she's not a burden
"Incorrect Interpretation"

(Honestly even that could've made for an interesting episode idea, Lunella being torn between her friendship with Brooklyn and the knowledge that Greer isn't exactly wrong either)
In any case, it sucks that MGADD has so much incredible writing and animation to offer, but this episode is the one to get all the attention.
They think men are just putting on wigs and signing up for the women's league for easy wins or whatever. Like the plot of Lady Ballers.
exactly!

Like I need everyone to understand this is straight up a fascist's playbook right?

men have better hand-eye coordination. Therefore women created their own team related to such sports.
Also as a final point I dont think this whole episode should have been in the show at all. The audience of this show is definitely way too young.

I find it funny how they made the trans athlete seemingly more athletic, and the best on the team, as if they aren't proving the opposing side's point

Also if it was true, how is that different from women who naturally have more testosterone? And don't say that they could use that maliciously to get an advantage because that just is not true, no human thinks like that and would go in the immense trouble of transitioning to do that.

@@krystofsobotka3069 It isn't an unreal problem though is it? It's as concrete as you can get - scientific, you could say.

@@KotoCrash If it's scientific, can you please show me the sources? Because from what I know and searched up, there is not a nearly significant enough difference to be an actual problem. There's only a very tiny amount of trans women that actually do profesional sports, nor you or I could name a single one, but that just shows how much this issue isn't about the games being fair, as it is about transphobia and excluding trans women purely out of fear of us being different.

I both hated my natural hair growing up (like Lunella I also got thoughtless sarky comments about my hair from other kids) and eventually learned how to love it kinda by force haha
Black/black mixed girls go through this so often to this day tbh - it breaks my heart to see the cycle repeated, and I can only hope episodes like the MGADD hair one help others not to go through the insecurity I and my forebears did!
Despite that probably put them in hot water.
maybe sports shouldnt be gendered at all and just have people based on how strong they are!!!!! Like classes of strongness or something idk!!
Boxing has weight classes.
i agree! there has to be some sort of way we can meet a halfway point... sports should be fair, and it would be unfair to put a afab person against a amab person when there is such a insane biological difference most of the time. there needs to be a way where sports can be safe for people but also inclusive. ppl gotta remmeber, just because trans rights matter doesnt mean you throw woman rights out the window! we should try and make it safe and fun for everyone....
Like... that's not how you tackle these issues, writers!
wait sorry if this is a stupid question but if a trans woman goes on aestrogen does it make her weaker
As if they actually want people to despise the message even more
I do believe that trans women have an advantage in sports. I mean we have evidence of that. I think they could have done a better job explaining this.
Not so much when they're like 12 though

Trans and gay? Glad it's canceled time to celebrate 🍾
No???? Disney is clearly Left-Wing Company so why would they cancel this show unless it make them less money?
The episode could've been cancelled instead cuz its mysognistic
well when you make a show with those characters in it, targeted to kids, your pretty much isolating half of the world and most of America for your audience. its likely that they just weren't making enough money, and blamed it on homophobes, racists, sexists, and transphobes to deflect like they do every time a movie or tv show of theirs fails. latest example, Acolyte.
Disney is left wing stop pretending as if that is not the case, this is poorly written.

Thats why i dont like how Brooklyn complains that the rules are so unfair and restrictive and as it seems us the viewers gotta feel like she has been wronged, when in reality, maybe she is in the wrong her
PS: tbh before watching this i thought the episode would be about Tai, which tbh could have been interesting with how they might have interacted with a transphobic person, and i think if they were the focus we would actually side more with them
Really well put man, thank you for your thoughtful comment!
Absolutely - nothing about this situation is easy.
5:43 Yeah, you know it's bad when even the freaking Gilbert & Sullivan antagonists are more 3-dimensional and closer to what you'd see on, say, _Arthur_ or _Hey Arnold!_ than this mindless Rick Dastardly drivel.
I'm very shocked about this aswell. However, with Tai, someone identifying as neither a boy or a girl can still be feminine or masculine, and there isn't a nonbinary team for them to join anyhow.
10:51 Okay, but like... isn't that build (outside of Pixar) more stereotypically associated with *black* women, though?
I think they're trying to make her like odelia you know Amity's mom the coach actions exactly what odelia you forgot how she tried to kill Luz and setting up the rest what's the emperor and saving her own skin trying manipulate The collector I'm pretty sure that what she's based on unreasonable person do some come all the dangers not carrying the consequences
When I was hunting for extra thirsty tweets about Coach Greer I found a handful of people remembering and thirsting over Odalia too haha
wow you really dragged me along for 5 minutes before you revealed that you're a terf...........gotta put that in the opener baby i coulda been watching monster factory
she does't seem like a terf to me bro. she makes valid points, respects the characters pronouns, while also acknowledging the valid concerns that many people have over this topic. you realize alot of trans allies including trans people themselves hold this opinion? there is a difference in biology, and that effects the fairness of the game as well as if it can be dangerous for certain people. a amab persons body is majority of the time going to be way stronger than a afab persons, thats just a fact. we have these differences in sports so afabs can have a fair shot at playing a game w/ others with a similar build to them. does that mean that trans women are men? no. if a person says they use she/her pronouns and id as a girl they are one, but the fact still remains they have a biological difference that gives them an advantage that can be unfair to other people.
if anything, isn't this mindset with shutting down anyone who has this opinion (ESCPECIALLY a woman who is expressing her opinion) come across extremely sexist?
She is trans, so what? She can play in any sport that she likes.
I imagine Tai isn’t an issue to coach Greer because she considers it a fad like punks goths and emos before, it’s popular so lots of people imitate it and will grow out of it.
I think she is a girl btw.
Entertaining as always love your stuff.
That sounds plausible! They (the writers) might also just not have had the time to do it all 🤔
Aw thank you, and thanks for watching!!
Tai is a girl yes, women tend to identify themselves as Non-Binary more than men (who ironically identify as trans women more)
Episodes like these simply aren’t meant to promote discussion or let audiences see things from different points of view, they’re made to villainize and punish different perspectives no matter how worthy of consideration they may be on paper.
It might not have been handle very well, but I'm glad that they are trying to show these aspect.
