Alice, the preludes at NPR was so breathtakingly beautiful to listen to thanks to your virtuoso. The stormy part of the composers between the calm of nature was rather subtle.
Yes, it is important to rethink the place of the listener and his relationship to the works during the concerts. We should be able to come to the concert as if we were adults with children's ears, music is often a story, and the idea of discovering the program when the pieces are performed is beautiful, there is room for surprise, the fact of being ready to listen, to follow pieces that we do not know. A program sets a rather rigid framework, we come with a preconceived idea of what we are going to hear, as well as with the attitude of a “learned” music listener, the restraint, the rituals, the search for the conformed idea of what the performance of such and such a work should be, all this creates a framework which finally distances us from the work, from the vitality, from the actuality, from the life. Concert music should make us laugh, cry, tremble, dream, and the idea of the surprise concert may allow us to reach, perhaps, a different state of listening, more active, more poetic, more individual. I like your questioning and your different points of view, both in your interpretations and in your vision of the transmission of this heritage. What ages is more the way we receive the music in concert, than the music itself, which for me is often timeless.
I am not an artist. I did love when Alice Sara says that she’s always challenging herself to finding new ways of performing and communicate the richness of classical music. I interpret this as trying to avoid performing any piece of music as yet another performance. I have watched dozens of times her Beethoven’s piano concerto No 1, particularly the fist 11 min
Or at least put your toe in the contrapuntal water by playing Caesar Franck's 'Prelude, Chorale, & Fugue'! (if ppl are not familiar with the work try Witold Maclcuzynski's Seraphim recording on TH-cam.)
