    About the twisted pairs in the Ethernet cables: They work as what we call differential pairs. Before hitting the wires the signal gets split into a positive and a negative component. Along the run this signal is submitted to the interference sources that hit both wires in the pair equally. At the receiver the positive and negative halves of the signal are summed back to recompose the original waveform. As both (+) and (-) components received the same interference it gets canceled during the sum operation and you get your beautiful interference free signal back. But I think you already knew that :) Keep pushing this great content!

    Dave I‘ve just discovered your channel a month ago and binge watched the channel since. As a computer engineering student this is more entertainment than watching netflix at night. I wish I knew you a year ago as I did my Operating Systems class, which is very challenging and requires a lot of will and motivation at the Graz University of Technology(held by Prof Daniel Gruss, who you might know because of Meltdown&Spectre, Rowhammer and Plundervolt vulnerabilities). But it‘s never too late, you‘ve certainly given me a boost in motivation as I approach the end of my bachelors degree. Keep it up!

    Absolutely love this video, wish I found it earlier. My house is around 24K sq ft, 20 rooms and not pre-wired. I made a choice to use Multi mode fiber instead of copper, a decision I come to regret. Yea the initial investment was much cheaper considering the switches and routers however the cost of transceivers and the lack of PoE messed it all up. Anyone reading this with a big house. DO NOT DO ALL FIBER. Also pro tip for anyone who’s ISP provides an “agitate” fiber. Use a GPON to SFP module.

Your explanation is completely fine in the context and I'm not knocking it, just providing a little added context.

    For the record Cat5 (without the e) usually only contains two pairs of wires because that standard does not go beyond Fast Ethernet (100Mbit) Cat5e is OK for Gigabit, but was designed for Fast Ethernet with PoE over the other two pairs.

    Interestingly I set my own 10Gb networking at home earlier this year. I knew how to do most of the stuff but 1 thing that just was unforeseen was interesting, and all of this was just to connect directly from my main machine to the NAS box and nothing else. Turns out the 10Gb NIC needs a ton of cooling otherwise it would shut down, and that was not even when it was in use most of the time. And it was not even a faulty NIC!

    You're an amazing teacher.
    Just for clarification, with RJ45 SFP transceiver which are capable of max 30m runs, wouldn't high quality CAT-5e and CAT-6 be good enough for 10G? CAT-5e has been shown to be able to support 10G at around 40m distance and CAT-6 is rated for 10G at 55m.

    • @Masterrunescapeer
      @Masterrunescapeer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Note that needs to be good Cat5e cabling, and it also degrades over time. Got caught out by the degrading once, was some cabling I ran in 2005, degraded and couldn't handle 10Gbps on some runs once I tried upgrading, confused me as worked fine for others from the same original bundle. This was at about 30m, so probably close enough to edge.
      Swapped it with fiber with SFP ports at the ends, that should probably last longer than the house will ever stand, just upgrade equipment on both ends as/when needed (and went with OM4 as OM3 was ~$50 for a 50m run vs $60 for OM4, this was underground in piping that was made for Cat5e, so way more than enough space for fiber).

    I hope you connected the different buildings with fiber, because if you don't you have the risk that the electric potential is different from 2 building, for example when lightning hits one building it will fry all your network stuff. This is why at least here in Europe different buildings need to be connected with fiber to each other to meet the standard, because fiber doesn't transmit electrical power and so it doesn't damage all your network equipment if the potentials between buildings are too big.

    Very nice videos, just found your channel today and have been watching this series. I'm getting a upgrade to a 10G internet next week and need to run some new wires up to my office and figure out how I want to utilize it for my servers. I'm mostly experienced with normal ethernet so all this SFP+ stuff have been a lot ot take in these past few weeks.
    I'm not as lucky as you, we seem to have regular old CAT5 (not E) in all the cabling throughout the house, cable runs are done a bit adhoc and nothing is documented, and nothing is ducted. So I'm in for a few long weekends running new cabling to the critical places. I have not decided yet if it's worth the hassle to have actual 10G outside the server room and maybe my office. A router for 10G internet isn't trivial to find for reasonable price either.

    To all of you commenting about Microsoft paying well. Why didn't you buy their stock 20 years ago? I'm sure Dave made his money on stock. And good for him. Thanks for the great content Dave.

      If you got, say, $1,000 worth of MS stock in the early '90s (and you did the wise thing and held it) you are now sitting on $3m.

    FYI I have CAT8 cable (short distance though) to give it an extra umph for my fiber connection to the internet behind a failover WAN router. it actually was a notable difference between CAT6 and 7.

  • @johnterpack3940
    @johnterpack3940 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was just looking at Cat 8 cable the other day out of curiosity. It isn't hard to find. But since my network consists of a 6' strand of Cat 5 between the BGW-210 modem/router and my gaming rig it seemed a bit overkill.

    Hi Dave, great video as always. Quick question about your CalDigit dock: what sort and brand of thunderbolt cable are you using for it? I assume you need an active thunderbolt cable for a 2m connection. I’m finding the 50cm one that came with it a bit short.

    you could also replace everything for single mode optical fiber with a single fiber... or multimode with a single fiber !
