    1:02 "wow terrible name"
Until you actually look into what it means and start to go: "Huh, that's actually quite clever".
Seriously, compare CRS-312-4C+8XG-RM to something like "UniFi FlexHD", "UniFi AP HD", "UniFi AP SHD" and "UniFi Switch 16 PoE Gen2" and you'd actually be surprised how much easier it is to see the ports it has without having to look into the entire specsheet...
For those wondering what I'm brabbling on about:
    - CRS: Cloud Router Switch
    - 3: series 3
    - 12: 12 wired interfaces
    - 4C+: 4 Combo 10G/SFP ports
    - 8XG: 8 5G/10G Ethernet ports
    - RM: RackMount

@Gus Erland the wires inside are actually thinner tho, mostly different quality ("purity") of copper.
The real difference between cat5e and cat6a for example is the better alien crosstalk, allowing the frequency to go up to 500MHz as opposed to 250MHz on Cat6 and and 100MHz on Cat5e

    • @FinlayDaG33k
      @FinlayDaG33k 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@Gus Erland Ah yes, I'm totally clueless.
That's why I am taking my network engineering exam next month? :^)
Let's grab the book shall we?
      - Operate at 500MHz instead of 250MHz of Cat5 or 100MHz of Cat5e
      - higher purity copper, resulting in less losses over distance
      - same AWG wires as cat6, ever so slightly thicker wires than cat5e (I guess you're right here)
      - tighter twists
      - a "plastic piece" in the middle to limit crosstalk
      - thicker insulation around each wire
There you have it, the both of us were right.
      Happy now?

That is a strong tape... the Cat5 ripped in half first...
I run all Cat6 standard for many years... I know this is 3 years ago... I had my house built 3 years ago and the company doing the low voltage was STILL doing Cat5e as standard (in 2019!) when I had been using Cat6 for about 5 years.... They made me pay an upgrade fee to change to Cat6 on my runs.... The guy was telling me, oh yeah, you dont need anything over CAT5e, and if you put in 6, thats all you'll need for the rest of your life... I said Cat5e has been around for 20 years, how could you still be using that!?!? And I said I will use all Cat6 and then some when Cat 7 and 8 and 9 and 14 and 18 come out! I had to explain that I am running all my cameras (18) and 4 AP's, and I have a complete server rack FULL of servers and network equipment and lots of other gear. And all my smart home setup... I had to show that I did indeed need CAT6 and dont tell me that BS about it being good for all i'll ever need... I"m NOT your typical customer and dont downsell me so you can pocket more money by getting CHEAP CAT5e... He had never pre-wired for anyone with AP's, let alone 4 of them, and PoE cams. I asked about running fiber lines where I wanted them and at first he was like "the ISP can do that" and I said, no, not the DMARC to the wire closet, I mean wire closet to Rack and to a few other places where I need 40gbps drops for my internal network. and he was like yeah, we dont do fiber... And they wouldnt let me run my own fiber and cable, I HAD to pay them :(.... I ran my fiber lines after closing...
This was a production builder in a very high end community... My next home, Wife and I are purchasing land and doing a 100% custom build the way we want it... shoot for net zero and then I get to run ALL my own cables and fiber before they begin drywall...

pro cabling tip, you dont need a screwdriver or anything to straighten them out
(this is gonna be crazy hard to explain in text, but here goes..)
    1) untwist them
    2) line them up in the right order
    3) firmly hold them together (while keeping them flat) at two different points ~1/2 an inch apart
    4) wiggle those 2 points back and forth on a 2 dimensional plane, the wires will straighten *much* more.
    5) snip off the un-straightened part

Also poverty shouldn’t be made fun of, it’s a serious situation that no one should go through. But hey, that’s just a goal of the world. Anyway, poverty can come from many things and not just making bad decisions. But hey, in your world everyone’s stupid if they’re poor. You may say how people who are poor are there because of bad decisions, bad education, etc.. But how are you the judge? What makes you special enough to allow you to judge people’s decisions and say if they were good or bad? What makes your conclusions valid? What I’m trying to say is treat people the way you want to be treated, because the comment that Peter made was generally not directed to you. I don’t fully support the comment, however your response is even worse.

An Asus XG-C100C user here. A while back an AQC107 firmware update, atlflashupdate_1.4.2_3.1.90.zip was available for download from Aquantia's site. So I used it (via Windows 10 1903) to update my XG-C100C's firmware from ver. 1.5.44 to ver. 3.1.90 in order to successfully remedy an infrequent and intermittent dropped network connection issue. I then repeated said update with equal success on another XG-C100C I had bought as a backup.
Shortly afterwards atlflashupdate_1.4.2_3.1.90.zip was removed from Aquantia's site. I sent them an e-mail asking why. Their response was noncommittal. (Note: I subsequently learned that Aquantia was in the process of being acquired by Marvell around this time. Hence there may have been some policy changes afoot.)
However, I soon found an alternate and reputable source for atlflashupdate_1.4.2_3.1.90.zip. Here it is:
    Solo10G Firmware 1.4.2_3.1.90
    www.sonnettech.com/support/kb/kb.php?cat=538&expand=_a13&action=b1063#b1063
All of the files and the readme in the above .zip are identical to those found in the one I previously downloaded from Aquantia's site.
    From said readme:
    "AtlFlashUpdate is a tool for updating firmware on AQC100, AQC108, AQC107, AQN100, AQN108, and AQN107"
Sonnet Solo10G PCIe Card | Sonnet
    www.sonnettech.com/product/solo10g-pcie-card.html
    One more thing:
If I had to buy another AQC107-based 10G Ethernet card I would definitely choose between the Aquantia AQtion 10G Pro NIC in the OP's link or the Sonnet Solo10G PCIe Card. Why? Because in addition to both units having a ventilated PCI plate, they also sport a spring-loaded heat sink which suggests the use of thermal paste as opposed to the thermal pad found under the stand-off-mounted heat sink on the Asus XG-C100C. Relevance? I recently upgraded Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon's stock kernel ver. 4.15.x to the 5.3.0-19 kernel that's part of Ubuntu 19.10 and discovered that it can read the AQC107's temperature sensor. It currently reads 59C even though the XG-C100C is only connected to a 1G Ethernet switch.
Fortunately the CM 690 II that I use has two vertically aligned 140mm side fans which I can ramp up next summer. Those who prefer PC cases equipped with vanity windows are unlikely to have that option.

If this will helps, whean configurating the mikrotik switches and routers better use Winbox software, dont know what you use but i think simple using browser, configure RoMON that you can connect to device without any filter rules = saver things, you can also make many DHCP servers and VLAN rules for your servers to keep saver and separate devices from your normal devices like normal use laptops or phones, in ip>firewall>service ports change the ports you like beceose many of ppl like to try enter your cr using standard service ports and also if anyone can connect to your internet provider network and use scan in winbox, can see your device. In ip>firewall>nat you can make ports rules also in connections you will see all connections in and out to your network. Make in firewall filter rules flood protect rule for make your sarvers saver. In ip>dhcp server>leases you can easly make static adresses rules, also you can see there alerts.
PRO TIP - you can play music on your mikrotik switches and routers using scripting, you all can find in google serch. Think about that, flood rule starts to working, someone attacks your server, router starting the script to block that and also plays imperial march from star wars :D.
there are almost everything you can do with this router.
PRO TIP for ppl working in internet providers - if some company have many of radios from mikrotik and you dont know what radio you need to service, someone who can enter to this radio can play for you any music to locate the radio, we have many of SXT radios for clients and whean you reech the roof of building and see 6 radios .... that can helps
10gbps you can also reech using 2 x cat 5e cable, using any cables outside better use cables with gel inside, that will make water out from the inside of cable.

I'm building a new house, and just pulled 7000ft of Cat6 'E' (exceeds Cat6 spec but doesn't meet Cat6A spec). 144 runs to fill 3x 48 port patch panels and 3x 48 port gig switches (stack of Cisco 2960s). I'll pick up a 10 gig switch at some point, but there's plenty of bandwidth to go around for a while. There are 4 runs of Cat6 to each wall plate, and plenty of wall plates in each room, so I don't have to have a bunch of 8 port switches floating around the house.
It's a good idea to certify each run tho. I may have to borrow a fluke meter from work.

Glad to see 10 gig local networking catching up. I believe that it has not previously caught up because hard drives and internet connection connections has usually been slower than 10gig and therefor the benefit has not been that visible. With FTTH 1gig connections and ssd's getting faster, the need to upgrade the home networking is getting more prevalent.

There is more of a difference between CAT5e and CAT6 than the pair separator. Differences are as follows: CAT5e 24-26 AWG CAT6 is 22-24AWG. Twists per inch is greater in the CAT6 which provides better noise cancellation. CAT6 provides a higher SNR. CAT5e is upto 100 Mhz CAT6 is upto 500Mhz. CAT5e supports upto only 1000base-T where CAT6 supports upto 10GBase-T. Just some info for those that don't know... This may have been stated already... happy cabling .. cheers

@Linis Tech Tips - #protip, you can't see the actual difference (the one that makes a difference) by looking at the ends of a 5e and 6A cable.
The main difference between 5e and 6A cables isn't the plastic separator "cross" between the pairs - that is vendor specific and exists on plenty of 5e cables too, and has done so for many years.
The difference that enables the increased speed is the way the twisted pairs are twisted. It's necessary to twist the pairs differently to reduce crosstalk between pairs, because if one of the wires of a pair "meets" a wire from another pair repeatedly, it will increase crosstalk.
5e solves this by having the wire pairs be twisted differently, i.e. the brown pair could be twisted tightly/frequently, while the green pair could be much looser/infrequent. So the chances of random encounters between the same wires would be greatly reduced.
This has an unfortunate side effect, as the brown pair in the example becomes longer per feet of cable than the green pair. And this difference, over a longer cable run, can be enough to have data arrive at different times and thus makes it necessary to reduce the speed (frequency). As this difference grows over the length of the cable, it is also the explanation why you can run 10G on a short 5e cable run, but not on a long one.
6A solves the problem of wires "meeting" differently: By having each wire pair be twisted in a tightness/frequency that changes along the length of the cable. So now, the brown pair might be twisted very tightly at one point, and then later on in the same cable be twisted very loosely. And the wire pairs are then put in at an offset, so that they will always be twisted differently in a given section of the cable.
That way, the pairs don't "meet up" still, but the wire pairs end up pretty much the same length, which means the transmission time for each wire pair through a cable run will be very near identical, and thus, speed or frequency can be increased no matter the length (providing the cable is not longer than specifications), as opposed to 5e, where it'll work on shorter runs but fail at some indeterminable point a long the way.
So rather than looking at the end of the cable, to spot the difference you would open up some section, like 3 feet, of cable and look at the way the pairs are differently twisted. :)
